This is one of ABBA's most underrated masterpieces. Listen carefully to the parts when Björn starts to sing the bridge. There are several instrumental layers including Benny's wild piano playing as the ongoing foundation. Who does that anymore? Fantastic!
This was one of ABBA's disco/dance tracks along with Voulez-Vous, Gimme Gimme Gimme and Dancing Queen. They also had some funky pop songs on the Voulez-Vous album. Just so upbeat and exuberant!
You are Under Attack, Dereck! The world will love ABBA for all eternity, as we did in the 1970's/80's. Dismissed by many at the time as embarassing, kitch, continental Euro pop, even they now realise how clever they were at song writing and performing.
This has become one of my favorites. I especially love the extended live performance at Wembley stadium (1979) with the slow intro. A lot of energy. They were on fire.
This a disco/pop song as its finest...very good nice song, happy night life night out from my beautiful city Stockholm. Love this song, love this video...it gives such good vibes...perfect party song that stands the test of time. But you cant expect anything less from ABBA..
3:51-4:20 I think a lot of people, who doesn´t live in the Northern hemisphere, watch the end of this video and doesn´t realize that night looks like this in the summers here.
@@michaeltempsch5282 But: the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, is at 55° South. While ALL of e.g. Sweden is *beyond* 55° North! So not really comparable for the inhabited parts of both hemispheres.
Saturday Night Fever was huge in the late70s & this track plus vast majority of dance tracks on Voulez-Vous album are very BeeGees esque, ABBA unquestionably tapped into that source of popular dance/disco music that was huge during that time period. Summer Night City wasn't from any ABBA album but I think its on Voulez-Vous reissue cd as bonus track But it was on ABBA's Greatest Hits volume2 in late 1979, the very first album I ever bought aged 8years old.
Naturally beautiful women with great vocals, no need for stripping and posing . Their natural talent spoke for itself. Never to be replicated ever again. A talent too great to imitate
If you love this one, then you'll adore, 'Gimme Gimme Gimme (A Man After Midnight)', and, 'Does Your Mother Know.' This is part of their disco sound, having been released in the late 70's. Done in their own inimitable style, of course. I wouldn't call it full-on disco, but it's their interpretation of a more disco-y sound. The synths are subtle but there. The video was pretty standard fayre for the time. Dancing and having a good time is what popular music was all about for the bright, young things at the time.
There's a longer version, not released at the time, that also has a music video. There are scenes of them driving around in a Chevy truck. It's amazing to think about how good their videos are when they had tiny budgets to work with. That may be why so many of the videos to their dance tracks were shot in the same Disco in Stockholm.
This is ABBA and not any levelless rapper. I bet they wouldn't have used words like f...ing. As all can hear, they sing "love making in the park" so why use the f-word in the sentence before that? Makes no sense.
Summer Night City was Abba's kind of attempt at a more disco/dance type of feel in line with the time of it's release. Is it disco? Not really, but it was their unique version of it. There is a longer intro to the song BTW.
Abba's attempt of Disco songs apart from Dancing Queen also included Lay all your love on me as well as On & On & On, if I recall were the only songs that were released as 12" singles specifically for the club scenes in the US.
They had trouble with the mastering of this song, there are many versions that they did, but it never came out like they wanted, so they released this version and the longer version....
the last shot is the early morning of Stockholm in the 80s. fun part if you go there today and visit the same place 4 in the morning during the summer you will get the same empty shot.
As I mentioned in a previous comment, there is a longer version with an extra intro: - th-cam.com/video/TuZEVL61uFI/w-d-xo.html There are two other songs with a longer (and better) version than the music video edits: - Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) [full version]: th-cam.com/video/ZL93BV9uTAM/w-d-xo.html - Eagle [full version]: th-cam.com/video/ikUAAI9QIg8/w-d-xo.html
By the way next year in Sweden is to celebrate the 50 years of ABBA... With “Waterloo” in 1974. It was the 19th edition of the melodifestivalen contest, hosted at the Brighton Dome in the UK... And will be hosted in Stockholm City next years... Welcom to Sweden gays and girls... AND HAVE A GRATE PARTYYYYYYY - 2024.... I KNOW IAM ALL OVER YOU TUBE... BUT IAM THE HAPPYEST GUY ON THE PLANET RIGHT KNOW.... AND JUST WANT TO CELIBRATE ABBA... WITH....LOVE LOVE LOVE.....
The song is even better with the full intro that was released when the anniversary version of the album came out : th-cam.com/video/zunSolWvuJ8/w-d-xo.html The intro really adds a touch that was missing to the song ! Now I cannot listen to the song without the intro. If you have a spare time, just listen to it ! 😉
I got the single ahead of release and I loved how danceable this one was - after all, it was the disco era😉 Thank you, Dereck, you should get Swedish citizenship for everything you do for us😘❤🇸🇪
I love the fact that you take the time to listen and react to music that today's kids don't listen to. And for that I applaud you. For also having an appreciation for the classics. Hats off to you 🤘
ABBA were never happy with Summer Night City. It was mixed and mixed and mixed multiple times but they were never completely satisfied with the end result. I prefer the live versions from 1979 and 1981. Worked quite well live. There’s also a full length audio version with a totally different intro. Quite dramatic with strings and vocals before slamming into rest of the song as heard here.
Love, love, love it. The longer version is interesting but not as good (IMO). Though Ive always felt the recording sounded muffled. And if I remember correctly Michael B Tretow said the same. This was the only release in 1978 with a B side from a German LP in 1975
As it was said before, Benny and Bjorn were unhappy with how this song came out, they re-used the melody in the chorus, for the chorus in The Visitors (I’d recommend that song for a review but there is no official video for it.) Summer Night City was ABBA’s final number one in Sweden, it peaked at No’5 in U.K, and advance orders were so high that it got awarded a Silver disc on the day it was released. The live version is great if you want to review that from 1979, as is live version of Gimme Gimme Gimme which I would review instead of the promo video. Keep up good work. Ps I’ve sent you a message on messenger but I don’t know if you accept messages???
This is a new piece of information for me. You are right the melody on the chorus is similar to the one on The Visitors one of my favorite songs. Thanks so much for sharing that piece of information.
Benny and Bjorn reused melodies quite a bit, I’m sure Gimme Gimme Gimme pops up in One Night In Bangkok too!! And their unreleased I Am An A was reused in I Know Him So Well, they just so clever
Yeh a bit odd, think that in Sweden they preferred to wait till the album was issued, also I think that some songs were not issued as singles in Sweden, that’s why Gimme Gimme Gimme charted at a low 16, as it was bought in Sweden on import. the Hep Stars had more Number 1 hits than ABBA in Sweden. Though The Day Before You Came did peak at 3, in U.K. it was only 32
Being this is one of my favorite ABBA songs I'm going to have to correct you with the feel of the song.... That would be a very '70s feel... A very disco 70s feel... Especially since it came out in 1978.... Sorry Dereck lol, I love everything you do but sometimes I have to step in hahaha
Hey Dereck! What is your opinion about this two songs from ABBA? Happy Hawaii and Love Land. (Old songs, but I love the lyrics. Well, and the music too!)
I don't know if many people realise, that Agnetha was not happy with this song. She didn't feel it worthy to be released as a single. She made a comment that is did not have the real 🅰🅱🅱🅰 sound.
Two facts about this song: This music video is a attual night out of the members and the director, Lasse Hallström. And the ABBA members hates this song.
This is one of ABBA's most underrated masterpieces. Listen carefully to the parts when Björn starts to sing the bridge. There are several instrumental layers including Benny's wild piano playing as the ongoing foundation. Who does that anymore? Fantastic!

Josue-Joshua Cordova me too! This song doesn’t get reacted to enough. Sexy ABBA... All a bit tipsy... Love the live version from Wembley!
The live at wembley arena by Abba is one of there best love the song the agnetha wrote I'm still alive
Benny and Bjorn master song writers 👍🏻👍🏻 as all the brilliant bands have 👍🏻 the girls vocals compliment each other’s perfectly .

I love your addiction for Abba! Please go on ;-)
Yes at 4.15 you see CAFE OPERA ,Famous "Night Club"..
My number-one all-time favorite ABBA song.
Mine too.
Love making in the dark .
More complexity and more melody in one song than other bands in one album
The live version of this song in Wembley Arena 1979 is superb!
Pure disco bliss. Better days.

Not merely northern hemisphere - high latitudes. Ie far north in the northern hemisphere and far south in the southern.

Prbably ABBA’s most dope song.
The Live at Wembly version is killer, It Rocks !
Absolutely, great "hit the floor" tune...ABBA, killed it yet again!!! Thank you for sharing so much of the Swede Four!!!
My favourite ABBA track. The bass line on this is *hot*... 🖤

heard that one, and a few others, "live" at the abba voyage concert in london. it was awesome and soo intense.
Again, it's not just pop, as much as it is! But it's actually a well-written song by the two guys from ABBA (and sung by two very talented girls)
Such a cool video. Such a vibe
This song ABBA should be remember for more then Dancing Queen
1978 no album. Kids dpying and being born = life .. summer night city. + I am the city at there 70.s . 💕💕ABBA.

Another one right up there with their best stuff. The video remind's me of my "Clubbin Days" in Manchester, that now seem like a lifetime ago.

I love the way you love ABBA the way I do. Great videos. Greetings from Germany.
Top 5 in the UK on its release yet it was considered a flop at the time. Amazing really.
And yes... it was fucking in the moonlight ....! X
Check out the live version from their Australian tour!
Bjorn had to deny, on more than one occasion, that the fade - out lyrics and the end are not ''F**king in the moonlight''!
But it sure sounds like it.
Haha! 🖤
