it's crazy how this one song can capture such a wide range of emotions from this uneasiness and creepiness to extreme sadness to happiness and nostalgia. It's the definition of bittersweet.
I picked up this 8-bit looking game on the Xbox my family gave me. I started playing it. My kids, all getting older now, stopped and watched. They had all played through it before but never really talked about it. As I played through, they would witness my progress and cheer me on as I met new landmarks. I finished it one day, and they laughed with me. I can say Undertale is something I got to experience with my kids as if we were the same age. Weird, I know, but a special connection to my kids I will always cherish.
Ik the game has been out for like 5 years now, and ik the fanbase can be considered cringy at times, but man. There’s nothing quite like undertale, especially this masterpiece of music.
This game saved me from s*icide, let me try to shorten the story. About five years ago I was in foster care due to reasons I wouldn’t like to discuss, and I just kept on moving to different places because not many people were a fan of me due to my excessive talking. I lost most of my things whenever I moved, but there was something I always kept with me: my Nintendo switch. One day I found out about undertale and I saved up for a gift card to buy it. I was depressed due to the death of my dad recently and was thinking about self harm. Once I bought undertale I started playing it, and everything cheered me up, from the music to the characters. I loved this part because everyone’s happy and such a happy song was playing. It toughtme many things that I probably wouldn’t have learned if it weren’t here. Now today I have been adopted by someone who really loves me and I just wanna say thank you to Toby and anyone else who helped make this
I'm so grateful you're still here with us buddy, even in your tough times, a game filled you with determination, to go on. I hope you are doing well know. While my situation is very minuscule compared to yours, I was very sad the past few months, something happened recently which made me cry several times a day, but then this through this game, I smiled, I laughed, I gave happy tears
This is my comfort song. I've loved it even before I knew what undertale was. It makes me feel indescribable things. Love, peace, happiness, sadness, missing someone i never knew. It all just makes me FEEL something. That's why i love Toby's music. It makes me feel. From "Undertale" making me feel sadness and love to "Death by Glamour" making me feel peppy and upbeat. This one makes me feel the most. It's probably my favorite song of all time next to "Undertale" and "Reunited". I love Undertale. I love the characters, i love the plot, i love the gameplay, but most of all, i love the music. Thank you toby. Undertale has truly changed my life.

My friend loves undertale, i remember when he was sad, he would play this at my house when we where hanging out, 4 years of a friendship torn apart by his mum, it’s like he’s still here.
You gotta love how Undertale still remains to be relevant whether it’s through memes, or simply through the passion people still have for it. Still one of the games that changed so many people’s perspectives for video games.
never played undertale once. this song still has something special about it. just a nostalgic feeling over all. it tells you everything will be okay. but in a sad way that has you still reminiscing of past times. everything is okay, but not as good as they were back then. you did it. you beat the antagonist, or solved the huge catastrophic problem. everything went as according to plan and turned out the best it possibly could have. why do you feel that there is something missing? everything is alright. but.. no, it isn't. for some reason. what could possibly be wrong?! as I'm typing this, I realize that the song gives off such an intense nostalgic feeling, it represents a certain type of ptsd, that of which rather than hoping the past never happened, you wish that you could go back to before the more recent past happened, the event that caused your ptsd, because before that was when everything was perfect. rather than being the polar opposite of nostalgia, it's an extreme case of it. like when you run the bathtub water and you accidentally nudge the hot water tap and the water becomes so hot that it almost feels cold to the touch.
Toby had tuned the notes in this song a bit lower for the extra nostalgic feel. That means the notes you hear are familiar, yet unknown. Sweet, yet tragic.
Fun fact: The reason this may sound nostalgic (despite being a recently made song that people have “grown up with”) is because this samples from Super Nintendo games! Thus, the instruments sound recognizable despite being somewhat foreign all the same. This adds to a feeling of strange calmness yet sadness within the piece, as the instruments feel compressed yet once again distinctly recognizable. The games in question this samples from are Earthbound (Piano, and three separate instruments used as bass lines) and Chrono Trigger (Pan flute and strings in the later half of the song), which are two games well known for good music and both being major inspirations to our dear Toby Fox.
@@arush.27 There's only one song in Undertale that samples from Super Mario and that is the Absolutely Overfamiliar Shrine on the PS4 version of Undertale. The game of origin doesn't matter as much as the crisp, compressed sound does.
It’s the same as songs like Bloodpop and Memory, they feel familiar yet unfamiliar both at once. They all give me feelings of nostalgia and other indescribable feelings
ONG THO He really knew how to bring the story and it's characters to life, to give them meaning through a screen. Through a story, and on top of that your right the soundtrack and ost is just flawless, just masterpieces left and right
Most people don't realize how good the composition itself of this song is. I love how there are two different melodies played simultaneously accompanied by that haunting bassline and it all just captures this feeling of bittersweetness and nostalgia so well. It also has this slightly detuned feel that almost makes it a bit uneasy. Now I'm a rock guy who hasn't even played Undertale, this is not my music style at all but you can't deny the brillance of this track, it's crazy one man made this entire masterpiece for a whole another project.

same- i never even played undertale either. it makes me think of every fictional universe ive thrown myself into, and realizing ill never be able to really go there
This reminds me of when your in the menu screen of a game, but you have to do something, in the backround slowly listening to the music progress into a actual song and not just menu screen music
Am I the only one who would hug Asgore as well? I know he did some bad things, but... let's be honest, if it wasn't for Asriel's death, none of the Fallen Humans's deaths would've happened.
Mike Sky I don't know why so many people love Toriel, either. She was the smart one... and she bailed on Asgore when he needed her most, leaving him to kind of fumble around in the dark. To go save other children who fell down. Only to... not save any of them.
ZhangJao It's a shame they broke up though, if you think about it this is all Chara's fault, he hated life itself and made Asgore really sick then after he died he made Asriel die too. that's what started the war
some people are crying from nostalgia. some people are crying because of lore. some people may also be crying because of both. however, we can all agree that this song is beyond beautiful.
I associate this song with summer, with pleasant memories... This music cannot be described in words... This is sadness, fear, fun and calm... The most beautiful music
I don't know, this reminds me of sadness when I think of it. Of what was of something and now is nothing.. Sounds like the end of the world and all the good things and bad things that's happened. I wise man once said, “Our sweetest songs are those that tell of saddest thought.”. So if this is sweet to you then it must be sweet to others. Just reminds me of sad and past memories. Put this to 0.75 and you will get what I mean....
I really don't know why this game has stuck with me unlike anything else. I don't know if it's the humor, the characters, the music, the memorable boss fights, the story, or maybe it's all of the above. It's not the perfect game, it has some flaws. The game really didn't need wild encounters, it could've worked without them. But somehow, after all this time, I still just want to go back. I still want to see it all. I want to see all my friends again, have funny interactions with them, I just want to be apart of the world once more
I believe the encounters make it easier to bait the absent-minded player into playing it like a normal RPG. I liked the characters, music and gameplay the most
@@gabrote42 exactlyyyy, more opportunities to become a mindless killer, and it makes each encounter extremely important in order to get the true pacifist ending
I feel you exactly bro, but I think the encounters definitely add to the story as the other guy said, but the vibe of the story and it’s characters make me feel nostalgic and want to come back. Listening to the ost especially brings back this feeling, this song most of all

No matter how I feel like my old Undertale phase was cringey, it showed me that sometimes its just good to appreciate media, but not go overboard. Undertale really taught me a lot, even if I only watched playthroughs for years before finally beating it myself years after it's release.
This song reminds me of a never ending loop of life and gives me so much nostalgia. It gives me a chance to calm down and thing about my past and my childhood.
The moment the root snaked across the screen and grabbed everyone, all I could do was utter a soft, "Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu...," realizing that everything was fucked beyond all reason.
It feels like thinking about the good moments of your life, your friends, your family, the people you love, but now you’re dying, it’s all over, but it has been good.
This game released close to a year after my dad passed away. I can't listen to this song without thinking of him and breaking into tears. This game holds a special place in my heart. When he passed away, I had fallen down but once I got to high school, I made some awesome new friends to help me get back up.
This is a really beautiful story nothing more emotional and deep when a song reminds u of a special someone this song fitted rlly well with that sad part of ur life even the title of fallen down I’m so glad u made mates and risen up. ❤️❤️❤️
On the 29th of last month at 8:30AM my mom passed away and all I could think of was this song when remembering everything I experienced as a little kid all the way up to now with her and the rest of my family. This isn't just because this seems just like one of those kind of songs where you remember all the good and hard times. Its because Toriel a character that you meet very early on in the game reminds me a lot of my own mom with how thoughtful, funny, and tough she was. That being said, this song hits me way harder now than it did 5 years ago when I originally played and beat the game. I so badly wish she was still here because its really hard breaking out of old habits I've been so used to doing for so long everyday like walking by the living room she was always in to say hi, giving a her a big hug before leaving for work or other times when I wasn't busy, sharing funny videos with her or cool things I did like something I did in a game or a finished drawings, and chatting with her when I wasn't super busy with work for advice on things that were troubling me or even just for fun, but at the same time I'm glad she's free now of all the pain her illnesses had caused her. She used to fight it relentlessly until her very last breath. Home maybe a lot different without her here anymore especially during the holidays, but the memories of all the holidays celebrated together, conversations had, accomplishments shared, and shows/movies watched together will forever remain the same. Going forward, new memories can be created in that same now very quite living room to add on to the previous memories and make it feel like the same old home, sweet home both the family and I are used to. I'm sure she would have wanted that.
to me this song feels like the realization of the fact that all of the happiness and joy you may have now will come to an end eventually. and then you just sit, mentally going through all the happy memories, realizing that it’s just not here anymore. but at the same time it feels like hope and desire to build up even more stories to remember...
this is the game that is perfect. Singleplayer games are my go-to since the feeling of being alone without a human friend in the game is an unexplaniable feeling of eerieness and slight joy and uncomfort. I love this game and it's other major fangames.
Once you enter the Undertale world, you'll never want to go back.

never played undertale once. this song still has something special about it. just a nostalgic feeling over all. it tells you everything will be okay. but in a sad way that has you still reminiscing of past times. everything is okay, but not as good as they were back then. you did it. you beat the antagonist, or solved the huge catastrophic problem. everything went as according to plan and turned out the best it possibly could have. why do you feel that there is something missing? everything is alright. but.. no, it isn't. for some reason. what could possibly be wrong?! as I'm typing this, I realize that the song gives off such an intense nostalgic feeling, it represents a certain type of ptsd, that of which rather than hoping the past never happened, you wish that you could go back to before the more recent past happened, the event that caused your ptsd, because before that was when everything was perfect. rather than being the polar opposite of nostalgia, it's an extreme case of it. like when you run the bathtub water and you accidentally nudge the hot water tap and the water becomes so hot that it almost feels cold to the touch.
please play it
You need to complete the game, I think you'll love it :)
ok fine but don't be surprised when I overanalyse the entire game and try to be overly philosophical and dramatic about it

“What does nostalgia feel like?”
“Go listen to Fallen Down from a game called Undertale, that’ll make you feel it.”
@Hi. yess
@Hi. the word for that is Anemoia,
Anemoia: nostalgia for a time you've never known
or once upon a time maybe
Sweden is part of it too
Home too
Fun fact: The reason this may sound nostalgic (despite being a recently made song that people have “grown up with”) is because this samples from Super Nintendo games!
Yep! Toby Fox used a plugin called sound font on FL that basically emulates the sounds of different game instruments!
@@sgamerxbox360 Yeah! In fact, the original Fallen Down was composed as part of an Earthbound Soundfont album, called “I Miss You”.
But i never played super mario so why do i fell nostalgic?
@@arush.27 There's only one song in Undertale that samples from Super Mario and that is the Absolutely Overfamiliar Shrine on the PS4 version of Undertale. The game of origin doesn't matter as much as the crisp, compressed sound does.
It’s the same as songs like Bloodpop and Memory, they feel familiar yet unfamiliar both at once. They all give me feelings of nostalgia and other indescribable feelings

Am I the only one who would hug Asgore as well? I know he did some bad things, but... let's be honest, if it wasn't for Asriel's death, none of the Fallen Humans's deaths would've happened.
He's my favorite character
+Mike Sky Mine as well. Very identifiable.
ZhangJao
I don't know why people hate him
Mike Sky I don't know why so many people love Toriel, either. She was the smart one... and she bailed on Asgore when he needed her most, leaving him to kind of fumble around in the dark. To go save other children who fell down. Only to... not save any of them.
ZhangJao
It's a shame they broke up though, if you think about it this is all Chara's fault, he hated life itself and made Asgore really sick then after he died he made Asriel die too. that's what started the war
