NEW! 5.11 Skyweight Survival Chest Pack Detailed Review. The BEST chest pack I have used yet!

  • I would be honored with your subscription. This is a feature packed piece of gear! There are so many uses for a chest pack, which allows you quicker and easier access to gear than having to take off a backpack in order to get to your kit. I made a mistake in the video, the one I am using is actually the utility pack and the smaller corrosion is the survival pack.
The Utility Chest Pack is one of 5.11 tactical's new skyweight series items that are less tactical looking than their others lines, while still retaining some key tactical features. This series has surprising modularity, that you may not realize by looking at it.
This pack has a back pocket that includes "hot tabs" that can be pulled for quick access. This is specifically designed for CCW or concealed carry. It also has the ability to be added to a load bearing or regular belt to store gear in multiple positions, not only as a chest rig. It does all this without looking "tactical" as well! This makes it a great choice for EDC, or every day carry.
I would recommend this pack for any outdoor activity such as fly fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, and even EDC! I particularly like the front pocket for quick access to my phone while on the trail for pictures. The loops on the bottom of the pack are designed for a tourniquet, and can also be used for a bear spray container. With so many pockets and bungee straps of various sizes, there are infinite ways for you to configure this pack to your needs!
There are two issues that I have with the pack, which is otherwise excellent! First, the straps are much harder to adjust than other chest packs I have had. That said, once they are adjusted they are much more secure than those other packs. Second, the straps rub against the side of my neck, which other chest packs have not. This could be how I have them adjusted as well as my body dimensions, however if I am only wearing a t-shirt this leaves a sore on my neck after a few miles.
One other consideration between the Survival Pack and Utility Pack in the skyweight series is that the survival pack extends farther out from the chest. If you need to get prone, or shoulder a firearm such as a rifle or shotgun, the bulk of the survival pack may impede those activities. For those situations I would recommend the utility pack.
Thank you all for your support, have fun out there, and Semper Paratus!

One note - this is the utility pack. Survival pack is the thinner one with MOLLE on the front.

@@CoastieOutdoors No problem. Really cool content. I recently bought the 2 banger and I am loving it. So was looking for other 5.11 products. I did have a great day! Wishing you the same!

Fantastic review! I like that 5.11 came out with a less tactical looking option

Great review! Thanks. The interior organization looks great. But, I’ll save my money for v2. The top strap buckles need to be detachable like the side buckles so it can be easily converted to fanny pack use or removed while wearing a backpack! They should also include (or at least sell as an accessory) a proper slightly padded waist belt to convert it into a fanny pack. It’s shown with the belt from the Skyweight backpack, but that thing is enormous and overkill for a fanny pack, AND not available separately (really 5.11??). It should be a strap that attaches to the side buckles so it’s small and could fit in the pack itself.
Also, it would be great if the front pocket had a cell phone camera window like the Vertx SOCP (but better designed than that one). That flimsy stretchy thing seems useless for anything substantial and things would easily fall out if you bend over. What’s your experience using it for your phone? Does it stay in if you run, jog, bend over?
It’s almost there and better than a lot of offerings, but misses the mark by too much to make it a compelling product. It’s like 5.11 rushed it to market without really thinking it through and testing it.

Its hard to adjust on the move. The quick connect is awful! Its hard to unclip and clip back togetheron the go and are flimsy. It looks like it can break easy standard clips are better. I wanted to use it running. However you have to keep it so tight that it doesn't flop up and down, also makes it uncomfortable and very restricted. As a CCW its ok. I don't recommend it for running.

Have you ran this all day yet? I’m curious on the comfort of this kit. All of my bags and slings usually get uncomfortable on the 3rd to 4th hour of use because of the straps. Amazing and well detailed video btw 🔥🔥

Hi PickledOtaku, thank you for the great question and support! I have hiked all day in this, and ran about 3 miles at a time. There are good and bad things about the straps. The good is that they stay snug and tight more than any other pack I have used. The padding at the back is comfortable as well. The bad is that, at least for me, the upper straps that go over my shoulder dig into my neck a little too much for comfort if I am running with a crew neck shirt on. If I have a collar or mock neck this is not a problem. I hope that helps and thank you again for the support!

Albeit, a review, it would be good to see how you pack it out (i.e. a logout). Also, did you mention how you came across it? Sent by company? or "scouring" the internet? Either way, cool stuff! I'm new to chest rigs' but just got one as I found myself *not reaching for my binocular, or radio, etc because of having to unload the backpack, etc.

Too bad the belt won't slip through if you have pouches, a holster, whatever attached to it. Such a bad oversight.
