I'm so happy to have the pleasure of my friend Mark Murphy for over 60 years and the memories are so beautiful. Since he was from my hometown, I first heard him at the Casablanca Jazz Club in 1953 where he and the owners sister sang Billy Eckstein/Sarah Vaughn duets before, during and after the intermissions. Then he was attending S.U. and since he was born to sing, he continued mesmerizing us with his VOICE and acting talent.
Lucky I have six LP's and all 51 CD's (including the entire Piano Jazz above which he gifted me) that I treasure and listen almost every day at home and in car.

Absolutely beautiful. Whenever I need a lift I play this. Mark Murphy was a true genius as a jazz vocalist. An example of a true artist who never received his just deserts. May his music live forever..

Sadly, Mark passed away on Oct. 22, 2015. I took a few voice lessons with him many years ago when he lived in San Francisco. Around 1998 the building where he lived in S.F. was "condo-ized." Mark then "retired" to an actors' retirement home in N.J. P.S., the website info above is no longer current. RIP Mark.

I got to hear Johnny Frigo a lot, because both of us lived in Chicago for many years. On at least two occasions, I heard him say that Detour Ahead was all his, words and music. When he wrote it, he was a member of the Soft Winds, a trio that included Lou Carter and Herb Ellis. It was a coop band, formed when they left Jimmy Dorsey's band, and their agreement was that any songs any of them wrote would be published by the three of them.
This is a lovely performance by one of my very favorite singers.

This is such a great little trio thing! I wish they would release the rest of this the Piano Jazz program. It's probably in the hands of the Japanese record co. that released this as a bonus track. Mark mentions something Herbie Hancock did with Shirley Horn on this tune. I think he must have meant Dianne Reeves and it's worth hearing if you haven't.

mark sometimes forgot that less is not always more...and while it doesnt evoke arrogance....it asks way to much of the listener...though many unfortunately gave in..so to speak....unquestioning..which was the real issue...becoming exactly that obstinate see never no evil...defender....which i believe murphy needed.....no matter how many people were turned off by it...
