    I had the opportunity to play with Mr. Mark Murphy in a concert in 2000.
    Despite i had all the best toughts on him , I realized then he was a true giant of jazz , a fantastic musician even much more than you could expect !!! A great loss for a Jazz world

    I discovered the music of Mark Murphy while listening to a rebroadcast of Jazz Trumpeter Orbert Davis interviewing Kurt Elling on his podcast. He asked Kurt to request a song of someone else's that had inspired him. Kurt's reply was Mark Murphy singing "I Know You From Somewhere" from the Till Bonner collaboration. I felt ashamed that I had no idea who Mr. Murphy was. Ironically, I discovered what I would consider some of the most amazing music I have ever heard in my life the very day that Mark Murphy transitioned.....
    Better late than never.

    Oh man. The places that you go, Mr. Elling. Such control, the colour of your voice, molto bene. The depth of your feeling is so well expressed by your musicianship. You are way ahead of your time. Thank you. Melissa

    Thanks for the beautiful tribute, Kurt....sheer perfection -- song choices and execution.
    I am reminded of the afternoon I happened upon Mark's set at the Chicago Jazz Festival in the late '90s. He was performing on one of the side stages and I couldn't believe an artist of his caliber was not headlining on the main Petrillo Band Shell stage. I, along with everyone else, was blown away by his magic. I had been an MM fan for several years but had never seen him perform live.
    Then the universe blessed me yet another cool experience: I got to meet both of you at a then northside hotspot whose name escapes me at the moment. I remember the place was quite elegant with a large dining room (white linen table cloths -- the whole nine) on one side and a more intimate setting on the other side which consisted of a bar and a few tables and where Mark happenend to be gigging. I was seated at the bar along with my buddy, singer Charlotte Foster whom you know quite well. You walked in and we all just hung out for a minute with me in total joy and delight at my good fortune to be in the company of my two favorite artists!

    Nice Job Kurt! Note, that I met Mark at Vartan's Jazz in Denver. He had stopped in and was looking to have his "AMC Pacer Car" fixed (Not Kidding) and was going Cross Country (Brave as well). He had dropped in for a meal and Bob Dorough was performing. We talked about the lyrics he had written for the Metheny Classic "Its Just Talk". He was a blast, fun, funny and just having a great time. He reminded me of my Uncle a former Broadway Actor and we just hit it off. He signed a Menu and I proudly display it in my music room. Just bought the Kerovac LP but "Song for the Geese" is a True Gem and my favorite. Thanks again I saw you in Vail several years ago. Bob, Denver, Co

    Sorry, but the title of the second tune ("time to say goodbye") is wrong. The original tune is "A remark you made" written by Joe Zawinul (from Weather Report's LP "Heavy Weather", 1977) a timeless masterpiece of the Jazz Fusion era. Great cover (as usual) by KE.

    • @gottohavesoul
      @gottohavesoul 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Technically, yes, but Kurt gave proper credit to the original music on Man In The Air - he just chose to rename it based on his vocalese version of Wayne Shorter's solo for whatever reason.

    • @johnkim9670
      @johnkim9670 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's Correct!!

    • @bigjimsjazz
      @bigjimsjazz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gottohavesoul Close. Most of what Wayne plays is actually his interpretation of the melody that Zawinul wrote for him and Jaco to play on "A remark You Made". Believe it or not but I heard it from his own mouth in a concert I was on many tears ago in LA with The Zawinul Syndicate and Dave Valentine for a charity whose name I have long forgotten. It doesn't really matter, both Weather reports version (On the "heavy Weather" album) and Kurt's reworking and lyrics are wonderful, in my opinion.

    I like Kurt, of course, always perfect. Maybe too much... but this version of "I'll Close My Eyes" shows clearly the big gap btw the pupil and the master. Kurt is one of the greatest singers of his age, but Mark was absolutely the first and only... and mark's sister was sarah Vaughan. Nothing more to add.
