Etsy is no more for handmade. Mostly claimed its handmade by its dropship from China manufacturer

Contrado and Spoonflower for print designers. Spoonflower you can buy fabric/wallpaper/etc. Contrado is like if Spoonflower and Society 6 had a baby. You can sell products with your print on it similar to Society 6 and you can buy your own printed fabric for yourself, they just don't currently have a marketplace for others to buy your printed fabric by the yard.

Etsy has pretty much been destroyed by china made sellers. If you're new to etsy, and even if you aren't, it's s tough nut to crack. Artfire closed. The rest of these are so small you're lucky to get one sale every few months. That's why everyone wants a new place to sell. There are no longer any great options. As for your own website, it's almost impossible to get people there. I had one for years and sold one or two pieces a year and those were friends of mine. It floats out in space and never sees the light of day.

Sorry to hear about your experience, Piper! We have a number of members in HQ who have started & grown their shops recently (within the last 2 years even) on both Etsy and other website platforms. Everyone's businesses and problems are unique, so there is hope! :) - L

Agreed, Etsy is oversaturated. Have you considered doing craft fairs or farmer's markets? I'm looking into it myself. It might be a good place to start and get your business exposed, even if it's locally. That's my goal, just to start selling to locals.

    • @pipercasey7962

@@annamiljevic8632 Where I am we don't have farmers markets with anything other than vegetables and homemade honey. The craft shows are very expensive and you have to buy a business license in that town to operate on the river. It gets extremely hot and humid. You have to be outside from 8 am until they close at 11:00 p.m. If you leave early you can't come back. It's a 3 day event. VERY expensive. Everything else is church "fairs" and not worth being in.They're looking for very cheap items and rarely buy.

@@pipercasey7962 I guess if you want to sell homemade items. You would have to have your own website and so on many other websites! Because “modern” “people” want cheap crappy pre-manufactured items!!
They’re not willing to pay western prices in their own country!!
They want everything quickly manufactured in China!!

@@Tizzitco I'm sorry. I meant that the other platforms are too small, not etsy. I sell o.k. on etsy. Not as great as I would like but the other platforms aren't worth it, in my opinion, other than amazon.

As to markets and craft fairs try and think positively as a negative attitude to things will only kill your oompf for being a success. I started out with craft fairs and as like finding your Prince you have to kiss a lot of crappy frogs before you find one that works. I then had a shop of my own. Keep a positive attitude and just think that even if the market is rubbish you can use it for networking, gathering leads by talking to other stallholders to find out about other markets and also get an email list See what items are selling…. Basically market research. Give out business cards with all your online presence's so they know where to connect to you. And please don’t just sit behind your stalls with a scowl on even if it is crap, look like you are enjoying yourself, paint that smile on your face and make sure you have a bottle of wine, takeout or chocs waiting for you at home for afterwards to commiserate with. There is nothing more offputting than seeing stallholders fed up not interacting so be happy and draw those people in ask them what sort of things like what are they into, make them feel special and it will be easier to get their E-Mail addy for keeping in touch then email them after the fair to thank them for dropping by your stall, a blanket email is great for this. Then you can update them to where you will be next. Grab commissions if you do them. In any instance even if the fair is a bust hopefully you would have opened a few doors. Oh and if you do stalls I would definitely forget the little school ones unless you sell a lot of pocket money items that would appeal that is unless it’s a school with a lot of Jacinda’s, Humphrey’s and doubled barrelled names then quirky and niche items are brilliant. Always be prepared to diversify. 😂 As to the bigger events they are usually expensive for a reason and 3 days is long but the amount of money you should make from them will be worth while in the end, for selling, market research and getting contacts/networking . As they say you get what you pay for. They are usually well organised and have a great footfall. I made sewn items and also had a fabric selection that people could choose from to buy for their stash. It was great for getting commissions on the day as they could pick their own fabric, pay for the item in full or get a deposit. You can do anything so just go for it.

I thoroughly enjoyed your video and look forward to return to watch others! There is so many I never heard of before. I look forward to anything further you have to say about any of them and since you mentioned some previous videos addressing certain areas I look forward to watch them too! do you also share in a video how it is that you came to know about these and maybe some of your own online experiences?

I would say be careful with Pattern because if Etsy for some reason suspends your shop permanently then your Pattern site would probably go as well. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket as they say.

Curious if you have any insight on this one? Loving all the videos very informational. Thanks!
