I’d love to have the talent to pick up a guitar and decide, hey, I’ll play a few tunes JUST LIKE THE ICONIC ARTIST. I don’t have that talent, but appreciate it when I see it. Thanks, Michael!!

Dickey Betts is, I believe, somewhat under appreciated in Allman Brothers lore. Without him we’d never have the great
instrumentals nor would we have their biggest hits, all of which were composed and/or sung by Dickey Betts. Duane’s
talent and fire were legendary and that lofty position in the pantheon of great guitarists is more than well deserved.
But without Dickey, there is really no Allman Brothers Band or “sound.” In the words of Hall Of Fame ball player Reggie
Jackson, Dickey was, “the straw that stirred the drink.” He brought the jazzier influence and those incredible guitar
harmonies to the band. No Dickey Betts, no Allman Brothers Band. But that’s just me ...

Good point sir...Dickie brought major hexatonic too...from playing in bluegrass string bands when he was a little kid (pluckin with his close kin)
Incredible player n not often loved by the all man fans...haven’t read any books about the subject but it appears dickie fell out of favor with Greg n gang :(

@@GuitarlosCarlos Both. Saw the original band August, 1971, on Boston Common and already had the first two albums. Then when Live At Fillmore East came out,
we all knew we had to see the band play live. They spent time in Boston before the first album was released and often could be seen hanging around at the Sunday
Free Concerts and jams on Cambridge Common. I didn’t see them there but several friends did. I was just getting into slide guitar and seeing Duane play live was
Both inspirational and educational. What a show, never to be forgotten. I saw every incarnation of ABB over the years but, as they say, the original was still the
greatest. Ten years later I had the honor and privilege of meeting and jamming with Dickey, Butch Trucks, Dan and Frankie Toler, and was mesmerized seeing Gregg
playing guitar and taking requests at my friend’s house. Now, THAT was a night (and very early morning) to remember. True story, as I live and breathe. GUITARLOS
CARLOS, you da man! Guitar Of The Day introduced you to the GOTD community and the world. Keep a-pickin’ and a-grinnin’, my friend.

While this is really nice, I have the real-deal story from 1977, when I was interviewing "The Dixie Dregs Band" at Stony Brook University before a show outside at the student union, if I recall correctly. But anyway, the Allman Brothers Band's road manager, Twiggs Lyndon was managing the up & coming Dixie Dregs Band, and he had just checked my credentials and allowed me to do the interview of the band. After telling Twiggs how HUGE a fan I was of the Allman Brothers, and especially of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, he immediately invited myself and my friend and photographer, Bob Towler, to go inside his equipment box van and we entered a secret compartment. The three of us were inside a hidden compartment with shag rugs on the floor, walls, and ceiling! Twiggs turned on a stereo system and we passed the smoke around! After just a few minutes, Twiggs tells me to reach down under the bench seat next to me, and pull out a black coffin-case guitar case! And he hurries me up and tells me to open it! So I did! And what was staring me in the face,,, was,,, DUANE ALLMANS 1959 CHERRY SUNBURST LES PAUL!!! YEPPP!!! HE SORT OF EGGS ME ON TO TAKE IT OUT OF THE CASE!!! I was scared to death of damaging it,, but he insists I pick it up and play it!!! And so, I finally did. And I played it for at least 15 or more minutes and gingerly slipped it back into the coffin case!!! My proof of this story has always been that Twiggs, who was given the Les Paul, was given one condition by Greg Allman, that NOBODY WAS TO PLAY ON THE ORIGINAL FRETS, and so Twiggs removed all of the frets. And he used some of those frets to spell "DUANE'S NAME" on the back of the guitar body!!! That guitar was taken back into the Allman family soon after Twiggs Lyndon was killed in a sky diving accident sadly. I'll NEVER forget that wonderful experience that Twiggs Lyndon so graciously extended out to me!!! By the way,,, Twiggs picture is on the back jacket of the album cover of the, "LIVE AT THE FILLMORE EAST" album, you'll see it!!! R.I.P. TWIGGS~!~

His “red guitar,” which I saw him play later on with Warren Haynes in the band, was a cherry red, dot neck Gibson
ES 335 from the early ‘60s. That’s my take on it. I have never seen any photo or reference to a red Les Paul. He did
play that SG, though I don’t know whose guitar it was. He and Duane switched off playing it with Duane often using it
for slide. But this is a damned cool guitar and Lemmo is doing Dickey great justice on it.

The original is a 1957 Goldtop that Dicky himself stripped and refinished. “It had been really worn down by all the use and I just decided to make it how I wanted it,” Betts explained. “Some people think it’s nuts to do something like this to such a valuable guitar, but it’s a working tool for me.”

Whenever I see that red-orange I think of tomato soup. Then I think of grilled cheese sammiches.

Nice. Favorite band but never saw Dickey play a Red Guitar of any brand before. Not even Warren. . I've seen him even use a PRS at the Woodstock show but never a red guitar. Only one is Derrick Trucks with his Red SG. ? But, ok.

You can google Dickey Betts red guitar, if you want.

The Allman Brothers were one of, of not THE best live improvising band of the 70’s, (alongside the Dead of course)...nobody could play for so long, play such complex lines and harmonize so well with each other, all while improvising the whole time, just like Duane and Dickey did. Just imagine the sheer potential the band could of achieved, if not for the tragic death of Duane, and soon following after that, Berry Oakleys’, a phenomenal bassist. Not saying that I don’t like the Post-Duane stuff, I just feel like they could have done so many more amazing, out of this world stuff if he stuck around with us a little longer.

Can't go wrong with The Allman Brothers or a nice Les Paul. I love my LP even though it's only an Epiphone. Killer playing.
