- Dickey Betts of the Allman Brothers plays two songs, joined on the second tune by Stray Cat Brian Setzer (playing a signature Pete Townshend Schecter), in a performance filmed in Passaic, New Jersey 11-20-84 and later broadcast on late night TV. Also in the band is pianist and Allman Brothers vet Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones, Sea Level), and bassist Kenny Aaronson (HSAS, Bob Dylan, Billy Idol, Joan Jett, Rick Derringer). BetaGems are culled from an archive of over 1000 beta video tapes recorded from 1983 into the 1990s. Most feature live music performances broadcast on television in San Diego CA, though there are also rarely seen commercials, comedy clips, and other material that doesn't seem to be anywhere else on TH-cam or online. Most of the tapes were recorded on a Sony SL-HFT7 Super Beta Theater Hi-Fi Stereo - the same model was refurbished and is being used for these digital transfers and uploads.
In rare occasions where a BetaGems clip does appear elsewhere, we're only uploading if our own beta master is better quality or contains material not seen previously. Much footage comes from public television and public access broadcasts that the taper, who worked for a local cable TV production company in the 1980s, monitored nightly for several years. David Craft, When they were playing "Mellissa" it seems to me that I heard Twin Harmony notes, when he played his Gibson he was only using single notes, (it was not the piano or keyboard) so was there another guitar in the background???? just asking for a friend

1974 .Oklahoma concert went in a 1966 chevrolet SS 396ci ready for the quarter mile .stoned .in military uniform .Gregg and Dicky. Guy driving the SS 396 earned the purple heart .we paid at the office .

You could listen to 100 guitar solos blindfolded and you would no trouble picking out which one was him.
Betts was drunk and violent so Greg Allman had to dismiss him from the band. Jaimoe couldn't even be in the same room with him.
The magic of the Allman Brothers didn’t rest with any single player; Duane and Dickey challenged each other and continually raised their playing. Butch, Barry, and Jaimoe were probably the greatest rhythm section in rock in roll. Greg’s key board work wasn’t incredible but his emotive vocals overshadowed those inadequacies. It was a group of greats, a sum more than the parts.
Lots of great bands fall apart bc ego takes over and one member thinks they’re the sole reason behind the greatness.

Ironically, earlier in this show he had to back up David Gilmore for the song "Murder" off of About Face. He had a bit of an issue during the bass solo...there is only one Pino Palladino I guess.

@@BloomingdaleTN Not any better than Kenny. I have been a giant Derringer fan since I saw them embarrass Aerosmith in 76 and saw those guys pretty much dust anyone they backed up . Major influence on my guitar playing. Stories Brother Louie ,live is a bass lesson too
Michael Shrieve (Santana) on the drums - bringing it. His drum solo from Soul Sacrifice in the Woodstock movie is pure fire - he was only 19 years old at the time.

Blew me away...a one of a kind talent.

Dickey had the best moustache in rock history.
Betts makes his playing look effortless. His sounds is clean, complex and layered. He appreciates his band and they he. He's a serious musical force.
I could certainly see it on his face after the piano solo! His sliding is beyond incredible! Super smooth!! Still my favorites are One Way Out, Hoochie Koochie Man, live at the Fillmore. Done Somebody Wrong

Brian Setzer has been such a guitar master from the start of his career. What he really did was completely reinvigorate roots playing in a way that just blew doors and yet he never got the accolades of people like Stevie Ray Vaughn and he truly was as deserving or more. He just played tasty and mean and sophisticated rockabilly, country, jazz, and every style in between with utter mastery.
Agreed. The thing is that I don't think rockabilly is taken very seriously by many people. Its mostly about having a great time. So, Setzer may be an artist but he kinda of chose a genre that just doesn't have a lot of credibilly, if you know what I mean. I feel the same way actually about EVH. I lot of people just kind of dismiss him due to the band being essentially just a party band that didn't really give you much to contemplate. But both EVH and Brian are all time greats. Guitarists, at least, know it.

I always thought Brian was retro style in the 80's.
The 50's style, with pure rock n role.
Never listened to Stray Cats back then but always saw them on MTV.
Everytime i see the guy he's rippin on guitar.

Thank you for this gem. I love how Setzer comes out feeding off the energy of Betts. That's what it is like to play on stage when the band is hot. Note how Dickey uses vibrato on his playing hand throughout to get the piercing sustain, his tone is near perfect. Just a bit of distortion with a nice clean breakthrough on the lead, that's the tone I have modeled for my lead playing and in guitar amps I design and build. He helped revolutionize lead guitar playing and just watching his fingers move on the fretboard is entrancing. To me, not just because he and Duane influenced me the most and others I know, they are one of the pioneers of the country rock genre, the real stuff not the fluff.
Yeah you hit the nail on the head....totally agree...Setzer is digging Dickey and the energy playin off each other. On another note is why I always loved Toys playin and the tone he had with his thumb...nothin like it!
Rare time with Brian Setzer not playing a Gretsch guitar. He chicken picks the Hell out of a Telecaster instead, and reminds all that he's one of the All-Time Greats of Guitar since his early twenties. He's Danny Gatton Good at the end of this video, after the great Jessica take by Dickie and his band (with Chuck Leavell tearing up the keys).
One hundred years from now, music professors will still be trying to disseminate what is happening here. My God, what guitar greatness!

That was awesome. Two guitarist I have a high regard for (as a guitarist). Dicky can play with anyone, and it's more of a crossover for him to do Rockabilly. He does a great job just blending in the Jam and his runs are wonderfully locked in. Brian is right in his element here (trust me, it wouldn't be the same Brian playing In Memory of Elizabeth Reed. But when it comes to boogie, Brian is top notch in his craft, and I'm talking the world over. That Massapequa boy can Rock it!. Thank You for posting, and Thank You Brian and Dicky for laying down some of the best guitar chops in the Biz! Tremendous. Stay well all.

What a gem! Never saw this video before. Saw the Allman Bros 3X in the late 70's and in 2004 and have I always had the upmost respect for Brian Setzer as a GREAT guitarist. Most people who remember the Stray Cats from the 1980's have no idea what a great guitarist he is.
Bassist Kenny Aaronson is fantastic right from the start, he kicks off this game for Dickey and the rest of the band!

I believe the bass player is Jon Paris who was in Johnny Winter's band for years. Johnny was on that bill that night. I was there.

I don't disbelieve you were at the show though I see no proof & hey that's OK it's not what matters here. Kenny was & remains a killer Bass player & his movements are consistent with how he plays. The guy has played with so many top level players & he is in that same caliber. Watch this little clip with him from his early days. Same movements & that killer Bass work. Sorry to disagree here but I do think this is Kenny not Jon. Looking at photos of Jon this really does look more like Kenny than Jon. Even if one of us is wrong this is one fine Bass player & performance. Good stuff, all around. Super clean and smooth performance of Jessica. For some of the younger folks, Jessica was a huge hit for the Allman Brothers long, long, before "Top Gear" was even thought about.
Interesting to see this duo. Not surprising, just unexpected. The audience is so calm. If I was there, I'd be climbing over everything to be as close as I could possibly be. I saw Dickey Betts about 8 years ago and didn't have to climb over anything, just had to be there early. It was just beautiful to see a legend 10 feet away and watch him display his masterful control of his craft as I have been blessed to have seen many others of our time.
I admire that you said blessed that is exactly what it is I have seen Dickey 11 times 9 with the Allman Brothers and twice with Great Southern and I too feel blessed as I did with all the great ones of my generation that I had the pleasure to see live.

I'm getting the impression that we're both about the same age and as time goes on, especially this year with this whole pandemic madness how many unbelievable musicians that we have lost! And something that may be ridiculous to some other people is that I have had the pleasure of seeing the Allman Brothers more than a dozen times I seen DICKY live with his own band GREAT SOUTHERN and what KILLED me was when that month's ROLLING STONE magazine came out - they had some chick comedian on the cover instead of Gregg! Couldn't figure that out since the man knew that he was dying and he toured until he COULDN'T STAND! So you know what a SHAME ON THEM that is BUT - I think we're so LUCKY to have had so many beautiful musicians to go and see and cherish! I remember being at the Ritz in NYC with my beer literally sitting on the stage while Greg played his B3 ( opening for BB King and then of course playing with B.B. as well in the second set!!! ) I remember like yesterday and I can't even imagine I lucky me and my old lady were to have that opportunity along with so many others! Can you imagine that I was standing 5 FEET AWAY and Gregg had a bowl of lemons cut up sitting on the top of his rig. MAYBE his voice was blown or just hoarse? I don't know but he sounded phenomenal and I feel so blessed to have had the opportunity to see all these great players - being a Guitarist myself! We're just lucky and I feel sorry for these kids today!

I grew up in Massapequa the same time as Brian. All the great music was all around then. I am sure he was thrilled to be on stage with Dickey Betts, a true legend. Stetzer is amazing too. Long Island was a great place to be raised back then.

I believe Dickey's upbringing had him play music like that before he found Rock, Blues, and jazz. He brought Country picking roots to the Brothers. He is an extraordinary Musician!
