    Thank you for this! As a 25+ year rheumatoid arthritis patient, this helps so many others see what we go though. At my point of diagnosis (1993) the norm was a future of gnarled, knotted hands. Love watching your videos - thanks! I am not a medic myself but a patient with multiple medical conditions, including Addison's Disease and Systemic Lupus Erythematosis, both of which are uncommon in themselves but I think having both is really quite rare! I also have coeliac disease and asthma! All of this has left me interested in medicine and I like to understand how my body works! I'm looking forward to this injections video as I have joint injections for my lupus to help the pain and swelling but also have an emergency injection kit for my Addsion's and have been trained to self inject (although I haven't thankfully had to do so yet since diagnosis three years ago!). PS I think Rheumatology is a great specialism :)

    • @ViolinMD
      @ViolinMD  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Jennifer - thank you for sharing! I'm sure at this point you are a specialist in your conditions and have a VERY good idea what rheumatologists do. Interesting to hear about the Addison's kit, i'm so glad to hear you have one for emergencies!

I'm so thankful to all the wonderful doctors and the science which make things like this possible for people like me. I can understand why you look forward to being able to follow up on patients. Even little things like a joint injection every now and then can make such a big positive impact on people's quality of life!

    A doctor once told me that I should not google symptoms and my illnes I should trust him because he knows whats to do.
    I strongly disagree with that explanation, I'm the patient and I have to deal with the sickness and I have to make an informed descision on what medication I take and I need to endure the side effects. I agree that you should not google your symptons and go to the doctor and DEMAND and treatment for what you have googled. The doctors job is to give you a diagnose and then you can inform yourself and check what the next steps are.
    So when my research shows that treatment A and B can work and the doctors offers C, then he needs a good explanation. So far my research always matched with the doctors recommendation.

    • @stuartarnold9444
      @stuartarnold9444 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My least favourite part of my consultations was having my knee aspirated, especially when multiple attempts were needed to extract the fluid (the worst was eight attempts). I didn't find it painful, just very uncomfortable, and the reduction in pain due to the swelling was immediate (helped by the steroid injection). Surprisingly I found that my doctor was better at aspirating my knee than my consultant at the hospital.
      Now that I am on biologic injections my knee has stabilised and I've not needed any more large needles stabbed in to my knee for over a year.

    This is honestly probably one of my favorite videos I’ve watched. I have psoriatic arthritis and I was diagnosed at the age of 11-12. I can honestly say that you get used to living with it and some days are worse than others and not all medications work, you have to go through so many before you find what works. I actually went into remission for a year and then it flared up all over again, and I dont remember what it’s like to not be in pain. But I have gained a high pain tolerance from it so I am able to do a lot of things others can’t that have arthritis like I do. Thank you for the video ☺️

I was 9 years old at the time and my lupus was really out of control.

    I see a Rheumatology Professor and have Ankylosing Spondylitis - well that’s the best fit for my symptoms, given i also have psoriasis and so there could be some psoriatic arthritis in there... anyhow it took nearly 8 years of deterioration and multiple specialists ruling out other back/spine issues to get to AS, and onto some special medications that are helping (which is partly the way of confirming the diagnosis).
    as for Google - that has led me to some fantastic support groups as there aren’t any specific ones in my area, and sharing of information between patients in these groups helps find ideas for coping with the effects and discussing with other people who understand what you’re going through.

    Can you please do a video on PANDAS/PANS disease, please! I was recently diagnosed and it has taken over my life, no more school, no more going out, no more hanging with friends. It is an autoimmune disease. I would love it if you could do a video explaining it to spread awareness since it is rare. I would love to learn more about it and the scientific terms about what is going on in my body. Thanks!

    As a medical student, I've come to find myself thinking of the melody you use at 0:39 (and in other vlogs) to remind myself that all this hard work now will best prepare me to become a good doctor with hopefully the same passion as you! Keep up the great vlogs (and keep using the tune!) :)

    I have diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis which especially flares up when it gets cold out. Even if I'm indoors, my body knows and my joints become stiff. For a few years now, I discovered golden milk (turmeric milk) which actually helps with inflammation. As long as I keep on top of it (just like taking meds), my symptoms don't flare up.

    Sorry for the ramble, but in healthcare there are some conditions that can fall through the cracks as no one wants to take ownership - I don’t how you find that, but in the UK it happens. I have Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome pretty severely. I was diagnosed by a specialist but there are only two EDS clinics in the whole of the UK with huge demand on them, they tend to diagnosis and discharge back to local hospital care.
    Except for many there is none. I’ve seen many rheumatologist in my life and they lose interest when it’s not rheumatoid-arthritis. The connective tissue specialist rheumatologist at my local hospital wrote to my GP saying that he had ‘no interest in managing Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome’. So I now muddle along by myself, unable to walk and in horrendous pain just trying to manage my own symptoms. I say thank goodness for google as I’m treating myself so that helps guide me what’s bad and what isn’t!

    I'm a rheumatology nightmare. Rheum, osteo, Sjogrens, and fibro. Plus Hashis & PCOS for my endo to handle. My body is trying to kill me. I have had amazing rheums and horrible ones. I'm on the horrible side right now, but looking for a better one. If you're a rheum seeing this, please always remember that your patients live with tremendous amount of pain every moment of every day. Yes, the pain is totally normal, but please don't forget that we need to feel heard and that constant pain is exhausting. Also, if we tell you the pain isn't bad today, only a 5 or 6, remember that our thresholds are high, and we're at a level that most people can't get out of bed at. I broke my ankle and called the pain a 4. It was nothing compared to my '8' days where I'm lying in bed in so much pain that I'm incapable of even crying.
    Just because we work full time and manage our households doesn't mean that we're fully functional.

    And it's a wonder that Hugh Laurie didn't end up with permanent Vocal Fry after playing House for so many Series ⚛️

    Loved this video! As someone with many autoimmune diseases (including psoriatic arthritis, behcets and sjogrens) it was fascinating to see rheumatology stuff from a doctors perspective! Also, just wondering (if you know) do rheumatogist’s in Canada use ultrasounds to assess arthritis severity/activity? Doctors in the UK seem to vary a lot so I’d love another opinion

    I love Dr. House because he is absolutely brilliant and does everything in his power to help his patients get well without sugarcoating everything (I hate it when doctors do that). As for his poor bedside manner, I think he gets frustrated because his average IQ colleagues don't understand half of what he does, so, they come running to him for everything, even when he's in the doghouse, so to speak.
