The thing is, no one is prepared to listen to any theory when even merely theatened with withdrawal.

I certainly see that, although that is quite a big generalisation. Withdrawal can be a concern for some and unfortunately it tends to simply keep them drinking which causes far more problems in the long run. The key thing is to make a start, and begin to address the emotional side of things. If you need to make a tapering plan or speak to your GP about giving yourself a soft landing on the physical side of things, then that is still progress.

Does this apply to other addictions ?

Many of the principles apply to all addictions, but I think the power of the process is in the connection and empathy that comes from working with someone who has suffered and then transcended the suffering. With the greatest respect, I don't think I would have a lot of credibility with Heroin or Crystal meth, for example as I wasn't addicted to those and don't really know how that feels. I think finding someone you can identify with, and that you feel can help you, is such a big part of this journey.
