At age 40, Rich Roll (@richroll) made the decision to overhaul the sedentary throes of overweight middle age. Named one of the “25 Fittest Men in the World” by Men’s Fitness and the “Guru of Reinvention” by Outside magazine, Rich shares his inspirational story of addiction, redemption, and athletic prowess in his bestselling memoir, Finding Ultra, and in the cookbooks/lifestyle guides The Plantpower Way and The Plantpower Way: Italia, which he co-authored with his wife Julie Piatt.
Rich is a graduate of Stanford University (where he was a member of their dynastic, multiple-NCAA-championship men’s swimming program) and Cornell Law School. He has been featured on CNN and on the cover of Outside and has been profiled in The New York Times, Forbes, ESPN, and many other prominent media outlets.

Now aged 93,and never looked back. In perfect health, no medication.

I am 23 months sober rn--can't wait for 2 years on 20 May! Thanks for the video--I stopped at 27 years old
So proud of you I’m 28 years old and I’m trying to do the same thing man
That’s amazing. We’re stoked for you!
2 years 2 months now 💪

I’m 37 and struggle with addiction. I’ve been abusing substances since I was 15. I don’t know how to become sober. I feel happy for those who were able to achieve it.
2 days…ashamed of my relapse but I am looking forward to getting back to it.
You are not alone.
Keep going, don’t you dare give up! 💪
You can get there again
Man I've been struggling the past decade with alcoholism. I'm sure sobriety will result in many positives in my life, but the thought of permanently removing it and my ego believing I can tame alcohol, has led me to desperately wanting sobriety, but constantly relapsing. I'm on sobriety attempt #999999 and I hope I can maintain it because there's so much I want to do and accomplish which alcohol is preventing.
I am here seeking information and wisdom. My son who is 31 has had a tough year. He had been trying to get a specific job for about four years. He had been part time/ seasonal. He finally was hired with excellent pay and benefits, just as his drinking hit critical mass. He promptly lost the job and I guess it has been six months and he has been through the wringer. He recently was hospitalized for acute alcohol withdrawal with the full spectrum of symptoms including hallucinations. He says he is too scared to risk it again but I don’t think fear is the best motivator. When he was in a 30 day rehab I was shown how much alcohol is pervasive in our life I was gathering some T-shirts for him and had a hard time finding any that weren’t emblazoned with a beer logo. My thoughts are that you need to rebuild your life without alcohol being an ever present factor. Focus on learning to have fun without a buzz. Good luck.
I completely agree. Trying to quit once and for all. I bless you please let's get sober
You got this brother. DON’T quit quitting! I have many failed attempts myself. You get to accomplish as those dreams and goals! 💪🏾
You can do this! Changed my life….I think a huge thing besides rock bottom for me was exercise. Healthy body healthy mind. Good luck!
I'm hearing you. You only have to quit for 1second at a time.
Week 1 of sobering from alcohol and drugs 🎉 finally taking up my life head on with no alcohol especially I knew I had a problem from the beginning when I wasn’t using it for fun more so to cope with my past and my current life.

I can go to the bar or dope house to try to impress unimpressive people, or go to NA, AA or healthy places where I dont need to impress very impressive people. Recovery for life.
Today is my 3rd day free of alcohol. The Bible says "do not despise the day of small beginnings." It's a start!
Good job Brian!!
I fortunately never been addicted to alcohol but I hated drinking and the way it made me feel… I was only drinking due to strong peer pressure… I have made the decision on New Year to stop completely drinking. I lost my best friend over this choice as she only socialise with drinking and I realised that I could not deal with her while sober…Being Sober really changed my life for the better and happier… good luck to you all and stay strong…
Alcohol is garbage. You did the right thing.
Alcoholics can't stand people like yo who day they hate how it made you feel. You don't get that for people with trauma it makes them feel better. Sick of reading this type of comment, nothing personal just sick if hearing it. Thankfully I am sober. But with my level of trauma it's hard. You're lucky you don't even know how lucky you are
I’m a year late to this video. But I finally made the decision yesterday to surrender and admit that I’m powerless over alcohol. The lonely and desperate feeling is soooo accurate. And cycling back and forth between drinking and not drinking is so obnoxious: because I’d get a few days, weeks, and even months but the disease would trick me into thinking I’m better or I can a few but it always goes back to benders and feeling miserable 24/7. But going into 2024 I’m so hungry or thirsty to abstain from alcohol. I know it’s gonna be a lifestyle change from now on which is sad to me now, but I’ll thank myself later the deeper I get in my path of sobriety. Also I’m currently 26 going on 27.
23 and going to 24 this upcoming March. 2 days sober. I just recently relapsed.

I work day and nights, drinking 30 years or a bit more, starting to get the mother of all hangovers, I think it's that time in life to give it up no fun in it anymore I want to be sober ,sound like I'm bitching but I know it's time might be hard to do but got to get wide

Everything he said is my exact experience at 41 minus the DUI and losing my job. So many days I missed worked due to being hung over. Letting my family down daily. Feeling like hell on a daily all trying to medicate my childhood trauma and any other depressing events along the way. I ruined my son’s birthday with my Alcoholism and woke up the next morning with blood in my mouth. This is the day April 30th I said I’m done. I cried and cried thinking of all the disappointment I have caused myself and my family and my friends. Zero recollection of what and said and did the night before. Too many nights waking up in the care of other peoples homes, cars etc. my rock bottom happened and I didn’t stop drinking. I thought to myself I’ll just manage it. Black out after black out I didn’t manage anything. Woke up after a mild event in my historic patterns and said today is the day. I will not drink anything ever again. I can’t control it and I’m not happy and everyone has had to hold so much space for me and tolerate my behavior and even try to minimize it to comfort me. Im only 8 days sober and I know this will be a journey. I’m just so thankful and looking forward to the new person I always wanted to be ❤
Keep going. It’s hard at first but gets easier. Just keep going. You gon be good. I’m 400 days sober this Wednesday. It’s so hard till it gets easier

Courage, resilience and higher power 👊🏼♥️🙏🏼
I am 5 months alcohol free today and have no plans to ever drink again. I spent most of my 30's in a spiral of depression and drinking to cope with it. I thought I could hide the drinking and boy was I wrong - got to the point where family and friends couldn't stand to be around me. I am going to be 40 next month and am so happy I made the decision to cut booze from my life for good. My relationships for the most part have started to heal, I feel like I have so much more control of my life and my entire mentality about alcohol has changed to the point where it almost grosses me out to look at it. If you are struggling please know you have the power within you to get better - it is tough at first of course and involves a drastic lifestyle change but once you want it - and want it for yourself and not just others - you will eventually find yourself wondering how you ever even lived like that. Trust me when I say I thought I was hopeless - I wasn't and you are not either.
Love Rich Roll! Such an inspiration ❤

What do you do if your Mrs loves to drink!
No one has prepared me for how hard this is would be. I’m on day 5 right now and really struggling. Luckily I wasn’t an alcoholic for too long so the physical withdrawals aren’t bad, however I feel so depressed and worthless and I know alcohol will make me feel better but I also know it’s only a quick fix. Today especially hit me hard as all my friends who I haven’t saw in a while are going on a big night out (perfect timing😅) and I told them I can’t go when deep down I really want to. I know I can go and not drink but it’s too early on and I don’t trust myself not just accepting a drink as none of my friends know how serious I’m being about this. It’s killing me. Please tell me it gets easier
Went from Alcohol to Weed. Thank God! Quit drinking two weeks ago.

How did you stay sober that long? The withdrawals have gotten easy but the after part is the hardest now. Keep returning back
Believe that you can win over this, because you can! You are so much more than that drink or fix. Have faith and remember that your higher power, that Creative Intelligence, whoever or whatever it may be to you, loves you very much and knows what you're made of! Give em hell and give yourself grace. 1 day at a time.

I never had a problem with alcohol. Caffeine is more addictive to me. Everyone is different.
Yeah but coffee doesn't destroy lives lol
Except for slave labour who pick it
@@jamesbyrne9312 It doesn’t fuck people up as hard as alcohol but I do believe that it’s a net negative
I totally agree. I’m trying to let go of caffeine (mainly coffee) and it has such a grip on me. Anything you feel like you can’t go without ends up controlling you. And that’s a place of imprisonment, not freedom.
@@erindavies3613 You're absolutely right. I'm struggling with caffeine myself, specifically energy drinks. I tried quitting for a few weeks, but relapsed. I swear I will beat this. I have given up alcohol since New Year's Eve, I will give up caffeine. Baby steps.
Misleading video title.
Should be called "another tedious anecdote about drinking from a sober ex-drinker."
I think Rich is great and I don't want to sound like an a** but he's very fortunate to have parents that are, apparently, well off and understand this disease. The majority of us are left to fight this on our own. Rehab costs are ridiculous. Being an addict in the United States is basically a death sentence unless you have money.
The Rooms of NA & AA ARE FREE START THERE.
Rich was a business lawyer for a top business law firm in LA.
He could have afforded anything he wanted to.
Nah, its a death sentence unless you let go of old ideas. Then, no matter what your fanancial status is, theres a strong fighting chance for an awesome remainder of your life. Addiction doesn't discriminate, and neither does AA/NA.
@@Shammy_V I get it but you can't detox at an AA/NA meeting. There are steps that need to happen before you can just jump into a meeting. The process is bullsh*t and everyone is told that rehab is the answer. Rehab needs to die. That's just a money juggernaut for pricks that don't really care. There are some counselors that are absolutely amazing but they're sucked into this fkn system. It only benefits the rich a$$holes that run the rehabs.

Who Cares about Rich Roll's opinions and comments??? I read his book, I read it cover to cover and thought it sucked. I went and I ran and ran and ran and got lost in Hawaii and then ran. Believe me, It sucked.
I saw a podcast in which Roll invited Goggin's to chat about working out, running, and diet. At that time Roll was Vegan and he was trying to get Goggins to commit verbally to a vegan or veggie life style. Goggin's is Goggin's and he's like " I eat everyone man, fish, beef, lamb, chicken you need all that when you do what I do"! Roll was visibly not cool with that answer. But when you look at where Roll is and where Goggin's is, it self explanatory.
In this video, I don't think Roll is committed to sobriety. His head, cheeks and neck are as red as the sun and he doesn't look confident. Just my opinion.
