    I've recently been messing around with the TAL Sampler to try and emulate Amiga samples. A lot of the Amiga mods (music files) back in the day used 8 bit 8 KHz samples which is lo-fi even by the TAL sampler standards. I ended up putting a sound through a bit crusher and bouncing it out as a sample. I loaded it into TAL sampler and it works just fine. I found the S1000 was the brightest and used no FX for the most genuine crunchy sound. Brings back some memories!
    I imagine you could get EMU or Fairlight type sounds the same way.

      Amiga Paula chip is as barebone as it gets concerning sample playback. As you say 8 bit samples with a sampling rate of 28 khz max, 4 voices hard panned by default (2 on the left, and 2 on the right) and a 6 bit volume "effect" per channel giving only 64 amplitude increments (so using software programming you could have the equivalent of 14 bit audio but it was not used in practice for games because it would slow down the CPU massively). There is basically absolutely NO form of filtering, interpolation or antialiasing. I guess you can use "sample and hold" in TAL Sampler to emulate that. There was only a low pass filter ouside of the sound chip applied on everything with a cutoff frequency between 4 and 5 khz. I HATED it as it made the sound all muddy and I always disabled it.

    Thanks so much for this tutorial. I was just fiddling around with the resampling controls and I'm really fascinated by the character you can dial in with the sample-rate reduction and DAC settings. I've never owned a vintage sampler so I'm coming at this with no hands-on experience with any of these old instruments, but I'm reading up on the Emulator II and the Akai S1000. Really cool stuff. 😎

    Awesome, been looking forward to this video for a long time! Keep up the great work!
    Also, haven't actually watched it yet so this may be a redundant question (apologies if so!), but have you considered using something like SampleRobot to ease the process a bit?

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know what SampleRobot is and what it can do. Not for me. I'm old school. I'll do it all manually to have total control. I don't do extensive multi-sampling either. Note-for note sampling is not the way to get any sort of 80s feel into the sample libraries I'm going for. That's why most modern sample libraries sound so boring and stale, they use way too much multi-sampling. I should know as I worked for some of them in the past. ;-)

    Now if this sampler would only automatically map the samples when you drop in multiple files e.g. by file name or by determining the root note automatically. That would save so much time. Many other samplers do this. But they don’t sound so good as the TAL Sampler.

    Hi Esben, thanks for a great video. A simple question not addressed in the manual. you have your settings in the drop down menu and not only on the browser to the left - how do I make my TAL sampler do that? For now, I don't have any preset options in the dropdown menu which makes it a bit of a hassle :)

  • @orthoooo

    Kinda confused by your vibrato setup. It seems like how you did it would have the mod wheel just speed up the LFO1 rate and use the amount set by the matrix slot above. When i did it I would usually have the MW destination be the slot amount knob for the LFO to tune slot. Anyway, it sounded like it worked right so maybe I should try your method.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've tried many ways to get a good vibrato going, that suits my taste. I find this is the best way for me.

    • @orthoooo
      @orthoooo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@EspenKraft I just tried your way of doing the vibrato and it is cool, if untraditional! I see now that setting the LFO1 rate at zero will make it add no modulation when the MW is down.

    I've been sampling for a long time. If you only sample octaves, your sound will inherit the sound of the software used with it's pitch variance features, Especially with an analog synth you'll lose the natural harmonics and tone of the sound. When sampling, it's best to at least sample every 3rd key. For looping the files in bulk, use Zero X seamless looper if you can still find it. It will find the closest looping point in each file reducing the size and load times of the patches tremendously. Edit: And also I've found Steinberg Halion 6 to be the only sampler software that will exactly reproduce the sound of what I sampled. I don't know if their holding back proprietaries on their VST Tech but I've compared the sound engines on everything and Halion was the only one to produce that exactness.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ideally you'd only want to sample ONE note in my opinion, to really get the artifacts going. That's how I sample the sounds I use in my own music. I want to hear the grit, aliasing and crunch from the sampler, when the pitch slows down.

    • @RogerBrenon
      @RogerBrenon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@EspenKraft Well, everybody has a full 100% right to their own opinion, but all your "artifacts, grit and aliasing" will be completely different from the original. Not a bad thing because it can still sound good, but the same as the original hardware? No my friend.

    • @EspenKraft
      @EspenKraft  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You don't use old samplers to get a perfect sample of what you're sampling. You create a new sound, with a new signature, taken from what you're sampling yes, but added texture, grit and character. That's it. It's called creation.
