Net Carbs... This is how addicts negotiate themselves back to their addiction! Thanks Doc. I always appreciate your Videos. This is one of your better ones!
Out of curiosity I tried Aldi’s so-called keto bread again after over a year since my last try. It’s mostly a modified wheat starch that supposedly isn’t digestible. Almost no “net carbs” per slice, supposedly. I’m a type 1 diabetic on a CGM, and a single slice of toasted “keto” bread raised my blood glucose over 20 mg/dl. It’s fairly expensive bread, it doesn’t taste very good, and the low “net carbohydrates” content isn’t true for me.
He’s right! Took at least a year and 9 months to really be fat adapted and have it dialed in. Lost over 100lbs on keto. Now, I don’t put on weight…even when I over eat or relapse on some carbohydrates (which is rare, but happens here and there).
This is such good advice! After going carnivore & finally feeding myself enough food everyday I realized how food-centric people’s lives are! I feel I am now eating to live, not living to eat. I have more free time & more joy for life. My friends say they “feel bad for me” that I can only eat meat & that they feel stressed when going out to eat with me now. Idk why! I dont talk about my food, I just order several burger patties or a ribeye or some fish & get on with my meal. My inflammation is down, my chronic pain is down, & I WANT to get out & go fishing, hiking etc. But my friends are still overweight & still have fatigue & they want every get together to be planned around food, not activities! I’m sure we’ll figure it out, but we’re currently in an annoying phase that is honestly a bit boring for me because there is SO much more to do than eat!!
I am 102 days carnivore and love this way of eating I have no cravings now and struggled with them my entire life I am 57 “everything in moderation” never worked for me, now I fully understand why. I did the advisor training course with Prof Tim Noakes and I loved your talk, it really explained a lot and you didn’t “sugar coat it” it’s a carb/ sugar addiction for those of us that can’t stop at one small piece or bite, thanks Doc. ❤
@runemartinguldberg9056 yes they are very helpful in first phase but it definitely needs to come to an end eventually to facilitate body fat burning AFTER getting fat adapted
@@msbeecee1 EXACTLY right. You're going to have a very hard time losing fat/weight if you're shoving fats down your throat which is why I do NOT believe at ALL in keto until after you're at an ideal body weight. I've been doing Atkins (as far as the fat/protein/carb % is) and it works. Lost 40 lbs this year.
Well when I did keto was all of that fat dairy fat to be specific and I found out I kind of knew intuitively while doing keto that the dairy wasn't good but I found out later when I took it out I was so much better for it. It was that and the fat bombs and the replacement food like keto pizza or keto cheese calzones keto brownies you name it. Today I do carnivore and I keep it simple and I do not indulge in desert of any kind. If I need a snack it'll be a pork rind
Your channel had the very first videos that I came across when I started my journey to cure my fatty liver. Carb Addiction. I'll never forget that term. I have now lost 35 kilos, cured my fatty liver, sleep apnea and a host of medical issues. It is literally life changing! My weight has plateaued for a year and a half. I am still "pleasantly plump" as my Father would say. 😅 Can't seem to lose more. But I have beat my carb addiction thanks to you! 3 years "clean" 😂 Thank you Dr. Cywes! This video was a boost I needed regarding adding too much extra fat. Thanks as always!
I'm not sure how much 35 kilos is, but you're story sounds similar to mine. This video reassured that I dont need the added fat. Just concentrate on fatty meat. Hopefully this will break my two year stall. Best wishes to u💞
I agree entirely with you. I don't count my carbs because counting is a sure fire way for me to fail. I have been doing low carb now for over 2 years and 135lbs down I know instinctively what is not good to eat I only eat food that I make myself from real food. When I started I bought keto bombs etc and ended up giving them away. I go by my blood work, my weight and how good I feel. When I started my Hba1c was 12 it was repeated earlier this month and it was 5.5. I have never worried about being in ketosis I am more concerned about how healthy I feel and how much more efficient my body is. The question I get asked a lot is when will I go back to 'normal' eating as though low carb has a beginning middle and end and people are shocked when I tell them this is normal for me. As a society here in the UK we accept that normal diet is processed and snacks are standard that is why 60% of the population is overweight or obese. You just need to look around and you will see it for yourself. My worry is there are a lot of overweight children now especially since the lockdowns a future disaster looms.
Couldn’t agree more, very well said. A sensible and practical approach based upon understanding your body and how it feels and reacts.this is exactly where I am following a 3 year journey 😊
Amazing well done Enid, I too am in the UK and started transitioning on the 1st Aug, terrible 60 years addiction to carbs, especially cakes, biscuits and chocolate etc, I have lost almost a stone and lowered my diabetes but when me and my hubby have been out on occasion for several hours we have ended up getting a sandwich or eaten a meal in a pub or cafe 😩 which is not at all advisable, it is a struggle but we will continue and hope to eventually break free from carbs completely 🙏🏻
snacking and keto sweets were my downfall the first time i did keto. the sweets even though they were not made with sugar kept me in the state of always craving sweets. i am now 16 days in to a ketovore way of life and i noticed just a few days ago this time i am not craving sweets or snacks
This was absolutely the best! I got so much opposing information from the online keto community. Found “replacement” recipes for my favorite foods, checked my ketones religiously, for two months. Got into therapeutic ketosis and lost weight FAST (scary fast). Recently steadily going up. Found Dr Westman and you and Keto with Casey. All say to stay “religiously” with real food. REVELATION. This video was my aha moment! Thank you so much.
9 months into keto and now 4 weeks carnivore. Good tips.... Each and every one of them. The key is..... Mental adaptation..... Not food adaptation. Change your wsy of thinking or be prepared to fail!!!!!!!!!
Definitely I have to watch this one again and again! Loads of new bits of info - two years to become fat adapted on average... and developing the arrogance to look with disgust at carbs ... clear, concise delivery, thank you for this.
The phrase “dining in”😂 is an eye opener! This is really great information and I’ve had numerous a-ha insights. I have no desire to count anything. With keto, I don’t have to. Like you said - it’s either yes or no.
I don’t have children but I can’t imagine a more challenging role than to raise them on a healthy diet. But I must say, it sounds like you both are doing an amazing job amid all of the obstacles! 🙏
Great video, doc! I've been following a keto lifestyle since 2018 (down 100 pounds). It's not always easy to stick with it, but your words of wisdom sure do help. Thank you!!
This was a very timely segment for me personally. Thank you so much. You do a great job of refocusing me. Your really helping me understand addiction and the importance of understanding addiction. Some day I'll share my story with the viewers of this channel, but for now it's still being written. Just know that even the little things you say can have a huge impact on people taking up this battle.
Yes you did clarify with me that my health depends on a life change from carb addiction.. not a "diet" not a gimmick, not a quick fix but a journey. Thank you for teaching me to respect my amazing liver and all I never knew it does for me.
Very practical information. I can honestly say that once or twice a year I can drink a few beers and then just stop and not have another beer for another year or so. Started keto and evolved to carnivore 16 months ago. Lost over 100 lbs and still losing.
Thank you for your video. I am a 61 year old female who lived on high carb low fat diet for 40+ years. I exercise and I am very lean. The reason I am checking into keto is that I am extremely reactive hypoglycemic and therefore have to eat every 3 hours. Like a hummingbird that lives on glucose. A view months ago I started to limit my carbs and added more fats in my diet. I think I am slowly starting to fat adapt and I am surprised how much fat I can actually eat without gaining any weight!! All these years I have deprived myself of this and caused a lot of physical pain and anxiety. I still eat some cabs right before I exercise, that seems to work for me. I will continue to experiment with this new way eating.
Thanks for the support and reality check. I've been up and down in my weight for years, keto/not keto/binging carbs/slamming the door again, etc. Watching your videos has been very helpful and though in recovery from drug addiction for over 30 years, I never really understood that I was also addicted to carbs. Now, I'm realizing that I'm just as powerless over them as I was over my drug of choice. It has to be black and white for me. That's just how I'm wired. Hard to do in a household/relationship that doesn't support that idea but I love the tough love you lay out here - that's really what I need. Bless you!
Yes, you have me think; I have been “Keto-Aware” for 4-5 years, but since I randomly discovered you and your videos a few days ago, I am rethinking all this. Information is the key…well done!
yes - excellent video! we are going into year 3 of carnivore. with some lapses, but acquiring the arrogance for sure (we cruise a lot). always appreciate your strategies and clear explanations!
I boil my butter until it is little brown and freeze, then break into small pcs and eat them instead of meal sometimes. So good! I usually have it before bed to sleep better. And I make very nice cream cheese bake for birthdays🎉cream cheese, yogurt, eggs, erythritol, sometimes berries in. So good!
Thank you, the tough talk at the beginning was spot on! We just couldn’t make much progress thinking eat until stuffed, add butter….which is not appropriate advice for this 65 year old couple!
I gained weight when I went on the carnivore diet. It took time for me to realize that I was putting on weight around my waist because I was eating way too much meat once I eliminated vegetables, yogurt, and nuts. I added back about 1/3 cup of frozen kale and broccoli (mostly kale) total with my first meal and about a cup of raw romaine lettuce with my second meal. The added volume of vegetables helped me reduce the amount of meat. I expect to eat a certain volume of food to feel full after eating a meal. Adding a small amount of vegetables to my meals has helped me reduce the number of calories that I consume.
I was on a university reunion this weekend. We ate a lot of fish and steak and had cupious amounts of red wine 😂😂🤪. I'm back at home, on OMAD today and will be back to my LCHF programme again, going forward. So WTF, I have not suddenly lost everything I have achieved over the past four years. And we had a great time!
That is my MO as well. I love travelling and when I'm abroad, I will sample the local food. I try not to overdo it but will break quite a few rules along the way. Yes, I gain a couple of kilos usually, but once I'm back home, I revert to the ketogenic diet and I'm back to my usual weight within a week or 10 days at most. I noticed that most of what I gain is water and a few extra quick trips to the bathroom do the trick. In 15 months I've managed to lose 23% of my body weight, so it's working for me, even with the planned hiccoughs. Today, I managed to complete my first 24-hour fast and I was amazed at how easy it was. I could easily have gone further, in fact.
Doc, Thanks for recommending that people measure ketones! One of my disagreements with Dr. Eric Westman who I respect greatly is when he tells patients that they don't need to measure ketones. Having ketone data reduces the chances for making mistaken assumptions.
It depends on your genes. Some love them, while others find them inedible. After identifying the compound, Dutch scientists bred them in the 90s to be less bitter.
Thank you! Your physiological approach instead of an epidemiology aproach is what apeals to me. ( I now completely ingnore the barage of associated studies that are thrown into the health sphere). Great episode! ...everyone of your episodes has at least one jem of information. Excited for upcoming episode on excercise, your interview with your mentor Tim Noakes last year might of gave me a clue.
It would be appreciated if you could present a total list of foods acceptable for all three meals in a day. These I would choose from when shopping and use when meal planning. For instance, for breakfast-- eggs, ham, full fat no sugar yogurt or cottage cheese, and an avocodo with drink being milk. Lunch: Brussel sprouts, broccoli, broiled or grilled chicken meat, salad with olive oil and vinegar made with kale , bell pepper, nuts, tomatoes, romaine lettuce and cheese, Supper - grilled or broiled Salmon, shredded cole slaw with cabbage and beets, carrots or sweet potato, lima beans with berries for desert.
Thank you, for your time in helping us understand how our habits affect our health. I have been a sugar & carb addict for years and now working at turning things around. I wish I lived in FL so I could call and make an appointment! I have a few questions about ketosis and not losing weight. I struggle to keep every pound I have and have been this way all my life.
Hi Doc, been awhile for my commenting, avid support and prior patient! Love you content always and get new tips always, with your help almost 2 years ago, I have dropped the 25-30 lbs and have been keeping them off, so thank you! My only issue is I have about 5 or 6 lbs left and I seem to be struggling to get them off. Somewhat disappointed. But hanging in as the alternative is not acceptable. Been mostly carnivore (ketovore). Thank you,
newer to carnivore, a lot of the carnivore influencers promote the high fat carnivore...I have a lot of fat to lose and always wondered about eating higher fat when I have mine to lose...this was helpful...
I’ve always loved your approach to how you give advice! Makes so much sense! I found you 3 years ago, and I continue to follow you weekly, to keep myself educated and accountable! I’m 60 y/o and am in the best all around health, then ever before! Thanks you x a million! ❤
Yep may people overthink the low carb lifestyle. It is not that complicated, and it really does come down to being more conscientious of what you are putting into your mouth and how that impacts blood glucose and insulin production. If you can get to stability without the huge swings caused by sugar and bad carbs, you will stabilize insulin and then be on your journey to becoming fat adaptive which in my opinion is the goal.
So much truth in this video!👏👏👏. Listen to your body and not your feelings! It will tell you what you need. Finally a doctor who is preaching a way of life and not a diet 🙌. I’m at this stage where I’m not tempted by sugar anymore and it’s true that it takes a couple of years to get there but how liberating it is to finally reach this point 🌟. Thank you for sharing this information ❤
Thanks dr. Cywes. As usual you go straight to the point and I do appreciate it very much. However.... I've been living a keto life now for 5 years and don't miss anything but one thing, pizza. So I've given myself premission to eat pizza twice a year and and enjoy it immensly. The blood numbers are OK after 12 hours and so I don't feel guilty at all. I know I'm a carb addict, but I think I can keep doing this forever 😃
@@robertcywes2966 I get it. But there's a subject nobody seems to tackle in the keto zone, and that is taste and cultural belonging. I'm Italian, my mother was an excellent cook and she taught me all she knew. I grew up feeling the pleasure of eating a well cooked meal and of sharing it with family and friends. Because of Type 2 diabetes and the will to stop swallong pills I changed my ways... and yet twice a year I need to feel the same huge pleasure of eating a great pizza and not feeling guilty abiut it.
Amazing video ! Thank you so much, im 3 years on keto and still learning, still have visceral fat, after listening your videos planing to go more towards carnivore direction slowly, thank you for educating us how, this is the most important ! 🙏🏼
"How the HELL can u kill Bambi, you bastard?!" I laughed out loud! Yes, we need an attitude adjustment, but let's not become as arrogant as those condescending vegetarians lol!
I adore what you are talking about and am a new subscriber and also I rang that "LITTLE BELL" your message does resonate with me as I have been curing myself with type2 diabetes since March 2021 A1c 6.3 and now A1c 5.5 I really went cold turkey to avoid drugs!!!!!! I love to follow your site as it has been keeping myself on track and honestly I have to say your information is amazing and every time I get a new video I receive & learn something new. THANK YOU THANK YOU
Really appreciating these videos, binging them all from you Dr , so much common sense and some classic sayings.. Love the"dining in"!!. ... I am not overweight but have UC (oxalate issues). and found your video on ulcerative colitis the best ever. Thank you..
Love your presentation Have a comment on relapse. It is not an impulse but rather planned once a month. I am 85 and I already have successes with my change of life style. Bloodwork results, BP, weight loss ( not huge but I am pleased) In order to live differently till the end of my life, I feel I need some relaxed rule once in a while. Meet a friend for lunch and order something that might be off, dessert. I did order keylime tartlet once but couldn't eat it, too sweet.🙀
Dr Cywes. Another good video, questions put forward were answered with method and conclusion, as for the cake argument with your wife, I have been there and done that regularly over the contents of my child’s lunchbox.
I followed you and Dr Berry for over 2 years and never got into ketosis. Fasting insulin 4.1, HgA1c 4.9, no weight loss. Thank goodness I found Dr Bosworth. Using chronometer, measuring morning BG and BK for accountability and self study and I began improving.
Oh my goodness gracious sake's alive! Dr. Rob, thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for this video. Do you know, I DO think that this is probably your best video on carb addiction. LOL ;) In any case, I lost count of the number of times I was pounding my desk with my fist while watching this and saying, "RIGHT?????!!!!" I have experienced 99% of what you shared in this video. I've lost weight while cutting carbs (drastically cutting carbs, folks, not just shunning potato chips...), I've lost progress in that life goal because I've given in to stuff I used to think tasted GREAT (namely salty chips, alcohol, and... salty chips and alcohol...) I KNOW what helps and yet there are still too many times when I give in to what I was USED to before I knew what HELPED. Thank you for slapping me upside the head today. I NEEDED that! I appreciate your videos and your honesty and your drive to help all of us who have been so conned by big food and big pharma and big whatevers who need us to supply their need. You know, in the last year or so, I've realized that some people in my life need ME to supply THEM with certain things so that THEY feel better. And I have quit doing that for them so that MY well-being is preserved. Well, there are some companies in our lives who do the same kind of thing... and for some reason, this video has connected these dots for me. Those people = those companies. And those companies - and their products - can go down the same dark hole that those people are in in my brain. OUT. Out of my life, out of my wallet, out of my stomach, out of my desires. Again, thank you. I appreciate your straight talk to us carb-addicted folks. God bless.
“Dining in! Eating what’s inside you.” Brilliant!!!

My biggest keto mistakes early on… “getting my fats in” when I wasn’t hungry … bullet proof coffee … keto bombs
That fat was very beneficial to train your body burning fat and not carbs.

I love your videos and advice that help me work toward a healthy lifestyle and kick my addiction to Carbohydrates!
Please do more of these videos
Thanks for the support and reality check. I've been up and down in my weight for years, keto/not keto/binging carbs/slamming the door again, etc. Watching your videos has been very helpful and though in recovery from drug addiction for over 30 years, I never really understood that I was also addicted to carbs. Now, I'm realizing that I'm just as powerless over them as I was over my drug of choice. It has to be black and white for me. That's just how I'm wired. Hard to do in a household/relationship that doesn't support that idea but I love the tough love you lay out here - that's really what I need. Bless you!
Great format. Love listening and reinforcement. Reduced total calories by listening about Rottweiler attitude. Thanks Dr.!
Yes, you have me think; I have been “Keto-Aware” for 4-5 years, but since I randomly discovered you and your videos a few days ago, I am rethinking all this. Information is the key…well done!
Excellent! I am looking forward to your talks on Exercise and Gut Health. Soon I hope!
So many differing opinions on those topics!
yes - excellent video! we are going into year 3 of carnivore. with some lapses, but acquiring the arrogance for sure (we cruise a lot). always appreciate your strategies and clear explanations!
So good!
Can't wait for the exercise video.
Amen Dr Cywes
2 years after a lifetime of carb addiction
So good! Thank you.
Excellent Q & A. Thanks.
So many hard simple truths. bravo, and thank you.
Hi Dr Cywes !!! So proud to say you are my doctor ❤
😊
Me too
I was on a university reunion this weekend.
I’m loving this so far. Thanks. Yes or no… i can overeat on brussel sprouts with butter and bacon bits
I think only you know that answer
It depends on your genes. Some love them, while others find them inedible. After identifying the compound, Dutch scientists bred them in the 90s to be less bitter.
Really like this guys point of view.
❤ THANK YOU DR. CYWES ❤❤❤ TO MOTIVATED ME AND BE STRONG FROM SUGAR ADDICTION 😊
I needed to hear this. Thank you!
Thank you,
"Once you look like The Olsen Twins!!!!"😂😂😂❤
newer to carnivore, a lot of the carnivore influencers promote the high fat carnivore...I have a lot of fat to lose and always wondered about eating higher fat when I have mine to lose...this was helpful...
This was so great. Thank you Dr. Cywes. You’ve helped me so much.
I’m new to your work, I love it, thanks for being there!
I’ve always loved your approach to how you give advice! Makes so much sense! I found you 3 years ago, and I continue to follow you weekly, to keep myself educated and accountable! I’m 60 y/o and am in the best all around health, then ever before! Thanks you x a million! ❤
Lot of woowoo out there concerning gut microbiom. Love to hear what a gastroenterologist has to say.
Coming soon. Challenges the convention
Excellent points. Thank you for many clarifications
Great tips. Needed to hear a lot of it. Thank you.
I watch all your videos because I believe what you say.… And you’re so likable! 👏
Thank you very much for your insightful content!
Insulin resistance and resolve fatty liver and pancreas via life in Ketosis
So much truth in this video!👏👏👏. Listen to your body and not your feelings! It will tell you what you need. Finally a doctor who is preaching a way of life and not a diet 🙌. I’m at this stage where I’m not tempted by sugar anymore and it’s true that it takes a couple of years to get there but how liberating it is to finally reach this point 🌟. Thank you for sharing this information ❤
Dr Cywes
So appreciate all of your
Contributions
Simply.. Thanks!
Thanks dr.
If that was beer and u were an alcoholic....
Dr. Cywes you have given me a lot think about and answered some questions I’ve had and cleared up some confusion. Thank you.
I love this man!
Amazing video ! Thank you so much, im 3 years on keto and still learning, still have visceral fat, after listening your videos planing to go more towards carnivore direction slowly, thank you for educating us how, this is the most important ! 🙏🏼
This was brilliant thank you
Thank you, Dr. Cywes🩵
"How the HELL can u kill Bambi, you bastard?!" I laughed out loud! Yes, we need an attitude adjustment, but let's not become as arrogant as those condescending vegetarians lol!
I love your common sense approach, thank you so much. I’ve lost 60 lbs, but I do track, or I will eat too much.
Thank you for your focus on lifestyle emotional support for lifetime changes. The struggle is real and your CHESS discussion is important.
THANK YOU THANK YOU
Glad it resonates
Really appreciating these videos, binging them all from you Dr , so much common sense and some classic sayings..
Love the"dining in"!!. ...
I am not overweight but have UC (oxalate issues). and found your video on ulcerative colitis the best ever.
Thank you..
You are a true blessing! Thank you so much for all you do. Although I wish I had found all of this many years ago, but I am truly grateful for you.
This was fabulous! Thank you!
Love your presentation
Have a comment on relapse. It is not an impulse but rather planned once a month. I am 85 and I already have successes with my change of life style. Bloodwork results, BP, weight loss ( not huge but I am pleased)
In order to live differently till the end of my life, I feel I need some relaxed rule once in a while. Meet a friend for lunch and order something that might be off, dessert. I did order keylime tartlet once but couldn't eat it, too sweet.🙀
Thank you, Dr. for making us think. That is mostly what we need. Every video of yours I’ve watched…makes me think.
Dr Cywes. Another good video, questions put forward were answered with method and conclusion, as for the cake argument with your wife, I have been there and done that regularly over the contents of my child’s lunchbox.
Thanks for your commitment. I love your way of dispensing common sense
You say you followed them. Just listening to them won't get you into ketosis but not eating carbs will. You were still eating carbs

Thank
You for all your great information!!
Thank you for this video!
God bless.
This was just what I needed to get back on track. ❤
Thank you so much for clarity and sanity
fabulous!
