I would have thought the entry models from Dacia would fill your spec pretty well.
For commuting though, in the uk, 50kph would be more than enough for most city dwellers. Chances are they won't break 40 except on school holidays.
As for small uncomplicated cars, I still miss my Smart Roadster. Had a few gadgets like heated seats and air con but not too complex. It was a hoot to drive too as I could feel like I was ragging the car around and not have to destroy the speed limit to do so.

Well, as an automotive journalist I can say only one thing about this: that car exists, but it seems like everybody forgot about it.
It's a Suzuki Swift in its last generation and basically has everything you're talking about. I know 994 kg is not 800, but it's really not that bad. It has new 1,2l DualJet engine (naturally aspirated, 3 pistons and hella lot of compression ratio and 40 percent thermal efficiency), really small and lightweight mild-hybrid drivetrain (some 0,036 kWh under the driver's seat) and basically you can run on the highwayish 130 km/h for around 4,6 l/100 km with 5spd manual (precise as hell, reminds me of the first skoda fabia). Not exceeding 115 km/h you can easily get to 3,8 or so. And it has all the bells and whistles and finally even also some sound insulation that Suzuki apparently hated so much last few years. Handles very well (indeed), doing proper moose test around the track, it was very close to fabulous last gen Honda Civic. Oil filter the same as Peugeot 106 and it's making 98-99 g CO2 in combined WLTP. Testing it last week, i was stunned. Finally something different! So if you can, get your hands on one and try it! You'll be smiling ear to ear... as I was. :D
But that being said, it's a pity that Suzuki is apparently the only one doing this kind of stuff for the European market. And last but not least, i really really appreciate your work. A++ stuff, really!

I'd say the main issue here - as usually - is not the car maker or the government but the market and what "it" (i.e. the average human being) wants. And the reason we are lightyears off some form of green, sustainable personal transport system is because the average person does not care for one, does not want one and most of the time does not even know all the issue their current car causes. As a matter of fact, considering that the vast majority of humans theses days live in cities, the vast majority probably does not need to own a car and could instead use car sharing.

I think the biggest and most important lesson to learn from Elon Musk, is that you shouldn't describe someone at the head of a company as a genius at anything.
Sure, maybe Christian is an engineering genius. But what is far more likely is that he hires people who are really good at their job (engineering) and really good thinking outside of conventions.
Maybe everything in the Koenigsegg TFG from idea, to design, to engineering prototypes, to final product was 100% done by Christian. Maybe he simply asked his engineers "we have this Freevalve system, how small could we make an engine if we want it to make 600 hp?" and his engineers did everything else. We don't know.
But I, for one, don't want to see him go down the Elon Musk route of spewing absolute nonsense to his fanboys with no one willing to correct him on it. E.g.
      > Due to the nature of Cybertruck, which is made of bright metal with mostly straight edges, any dimensional variation shows up like a sore thumb.
      > All parts for this vehicle, whether internal or from suppliers, need to be designed and built to sub 10 micron accuracy.
      > That means all part dimensions need to be to the third decimal place in millimeters and tolerances need be specified in single digit microns. If LEGO and soda cans, which are very low cost, can do this, so can we.
      > Precision predicates perfectionism.

(Full disclosure: I'm related to Christian by marriage.) One of the big differences is humility. Christian is a brilliant engineer, and he's in this for the challenge of making rolling works of mechanical art. He always has been. He is not known to play politics, be self-aggrandizing, or in any way egotistical. I think those qualities ate unlikely to change. A few years ago when I was in Ängelholm, he had a group of schoolchildren visit the factory for a visit. Christian patiently explained everything in terms they could understand, even getting down on the floor with them. I can't imagine that from Elon. Yes because the goal was to achieve a specific performance goal. If that goal was shifted towards making a vehicle as economically efficient as possible we'd have better versions of the econoboxes of the 90s. We aren't actually willing to give up anything for the environment but it feels good to pretend we care when we buy into the latest environmental trend.

@@stevenwilliams1805 If you really think about it, a lot of the trends we see in regular cars are really just trends that consumers wanted. Much of the "right to repair" stuff is a consequence of the fact that most people prefer to have a new car every few years for various reasons. People who run their cars to the ground like you or I are quite rare in the grand scheme of things... to be honest I'm not entirely sure this is a consequence of giving things up for the environment. I'd say that environmental damage is a consequence of rampant consumerism and a mindset that encourages disposable items.
In a perfect world, cars would have been passed down like houses, and the vast majority of cars on the road would be retrofitted with newer tech like seatbelts, ABS, TCS, and so on. The Japanese found out the hard way in the 90s that most people don't buy new and those that do weren't buying their cars, in America mainly, this saw them pivot from the 90s simple cars to add more "features" as that's how you sell to American car owners and now this has over taken the whole market. The type of person that buys new buys it for it being "better" than older cars so "features" became the way of doing this. Plus Features justified higher prices as cars became cheaper to build. The car he describes isn't profitable as you are competing for the type of customer who would buy a 10-20 year old car and doesn't want to buy new. This may change in 10 years when the last of the 90s cars become unaffordable and collectable but at least until then they likely won't sell

This kind of concept is kinda why I ended up buying a shitty hyundai accent last time I went car shopping. Very few bells and whistles, just four doors and 50mpg. The downside is that because it's meant to be a cheap car, the engineering and materials are cheap. The steering rack is about as robust as a paper bag and it broke going over a pothole at 25mph. They only seem to make these kinds of no-frills cars for cheap people with cheap expectations, so the standards are bottom-of-the-barrel. I think a lot of people want to be able to buck this trend, but what options do they have? There's very little middle-ground. It's either disposable or gargantuan.

So 99% of the time we need a simple little car for work - but when we buy a car we think about the 1% of other times. Therefore 150PS is not enough, two seats it's not enough, 130 Vmax is not enough, 450 liter space is not enough.

Instead of a metal rod attached to the door lock, companies will opt to save a fraction of a penny with a bit of wiring and a switch. Something also tells me you haven't gone through the headache of replacing a window motor or regulator... These are things I never have to deal with on my daily. Plus learning to actually drive without relying on ABS or traction control forces you to have proper pedal control, which makes a better driver. fewer systems to fail generally means less failures. If people want such features, I say let them have those things, but the options for newer vehicles for people like me that don't want those features are zero.

ABS is one of those things you THINK makes you a better driver until you have a sudden emergency and your monkey brain has no time to think "pedal control" and you just slam the brakes and just keep sliding. Ask me how I know, I drove without ABS for years and nearly shit myself when someone suddenly pulled in front of me and the wheels just locked up.
Easy to talk when you have time to think, when you don't you'll wish you had ABS, it has saved me from a very bad situation with a heavy truck on a road with a fuel spill downhill.

#1 reason (at least in the US) I think we don't have smaller cars is - insurance and licensing.
Small simple car for going to/from work, and a larger nicer one for road trips. Makes sense - except you have to pay for both insurance and licensing 24/7 for all of these vehicles even though a person can only drive one at a time. So we trade higher fuel costs (which is fairly cheap compared to Europe) for one large vehicle for a lower overall TCO. Reform licensing and insurance billing, and that could change.

Right, my response to his confusion on the popularity of crossovers is safety, both in terms of federal requirements and the preference of car buyers to sit higher and feel less liable to die in a collision. The safety of making cars bulkier is kind of dumb, but the auto makes tried to fight it and American consumers at large didn't care.

Your argument for the Aygo has always been my argument for the Fiat Panda, same deal, simple, easy doesn't go wrong, everything is cheap, cost nothing to run, couldn't be easier to work on. Its also my argument for still using a 26 year old Transit van as my work vehicle, its simple, it doesn't go wrong, if it does, its easy and usually inexpensive to repair. Its not the fastest, its not as economical on deisel as a modern van but so far including some repairs and the price of the vehicle it has still cost me basically nothing by comparison to its modern equivalent and I guarantee you it'll outlive them as well. Its a simple, a little unrefined and unashamedly analogue work vehicle. And I guarantee you no 2024 model Transit can will still be firing on the button and doing solid days of work in 2050. Virtually every heavy industry uses electric drive with a diesel generator, and every time the subject of passenger car efficiency comes up it's shocking that road cars have never adopted the same drivetrain.

Heavy industry typically go diesel-electric for the huge benefit of full torque starting at 0 RPM and great level of control over the power delivery. Really heavy things take an enormous amount of energy input just to begin moving. A diesel or petrol engine would have to be geared down a lot in order to keep the engine RPM in the ideal operating range for optimal torque which adds to the mechanical complexity, cost, weight, and general maintenance.
In passenger vehicles, diesel-electric or petrol-electric drivetrains could be used while removing the need for a transmission/transaxle. Why this isn't done, I'm not sure. It would not surprise me if the primary factor is the much higher cost of a generator, electric motor(s), and all of the electronics to run them properly. Could also just be that automotive manufacturers are just sticking to what they know. Could also be they don't want to impact their hybrid or EV models.

Much of train efficiencies come from both the lower rolling resistance of steel wheels on steel rails and the lower air resistance the train faces on a per-weight unit basis (Freight trucks would have to be drafting each other to get the latter advantage). This lets freight trains get efficiencies on the order of 300-500 mile-tons per gallon of diesel (basically 300-500 miles for each ton the train weighs on 1 gallon of diesel). My understanding is that for on road diesel trucks, this is usually less than 100 mile-tons per gallon of diesel, but I haven't found anything specific. Also, keep in mind that efficiency doesn't actually include regenerative braking that EVs have; most modern trains don't use it yet.
As a comparison, my 2016 Honda fit has a max curb weight of 2630lbs, or 1.3 tons, and a best fuel efficiency of 50 MPH when I've driven it on solely moving interstates, giving my car only 38.5 mile-tons per gallon of gasoline. Trains simply have the advantage in efficiency on anything on the roads any way you look at it. Converting all on-road vehicles to diesel-electric or gas-electric series hybrids won't cut it at all, especially since the drivetrain will likely further more energy losses in the motion->electricity->motion conversion, at least for highway driving. There may be an advantage with city driving with this drivetrain if it includes regenerative braking systems. But almost all car hybrids today are parallel hybrids which include a mechanism to send the engine power more directly to the wheels without going through the electric conversions.
For diesel-electric ships, I can't help with you there. Most trucks do not drive on water, last I checked, making a direct comparison trickier. :)

A good point I'm glad this video mentioned is that even though these cars are larger, they dont really offer any more interior space. A lot of it comes down to MPG and safety regulations. Larger cars are allowed to have lower MPG, but also a lot of the safety features people want (like side airbags) require lots of space in the parts of cars that used to be purely structural.
