Old Camera Challenge - NIKON D5200! (POV Streetphotography)

  • Can an old camera like a Nikon d5200 still make decent shots today? Of course it can! In this video I take my old Nikon, the first camera I've ever bought, out on the streets for some good ol' street photography. POV style.
    The Nikon d5200 is an eight year old, aps/c camera with 24 megapixels and I haven't used it for quite some time. I have to say, the images surprise me! And you?
    What's the oldest camera you own? Do you still use it sometimes?

    8 Years is not such a long period, but in technology the development is so fast.... Four weeks ago, I made the same challenge and took out my 10 years old Pentax K-7 and I was surprised about the quality.

      @NielsdeKemp  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Indeed, you could argue that an 8 year old camera isn’t even an ‘old’ camera.. But everything is changing so fast in tech!

    • @frutt5k
      @frutt5k ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Compare that 11 year old K-7 and compare it with a 14 year old Nikon (for example a D90) and you will be surprised again....

    Nice. I bought this camera way back 2013. I was really interested in photography. As a beginner, I watched and read almost everything about photography back then. I enjoyed snapping pictures everytime I see of interests. 2017, I stopped because I needed to focus on building my skills on transitioning to IT industry. When I saw this video about this camera, it excites me to get back with photography. Great content

    Thanks for showing off your corner of the world! Beautiful city. Nice photos. My oldest camera I'm shooting with is my 2001 Olympus e-20. It's just fun to go back to the basics sometimes and stop relying on crazy dynamic range or high MP to get me out of trouble ;)

      @@leoclements8017 it's pretty good for my amateur-hour self to be honest. I've also been looking at the 16-80. It seems perfect for me, but it's expensive though. Loved the review and the city tour!. I currently use a D5200 but when I get nostalgic I go out with some of my film cameras. In those occasions, I use a Yashica MAT124G, a Zeiss Ikonta 524/2 or my father’s Ihagee Exa type 4 (first 35 mm I ever used). My oldest cameras would probably be : Target Brownie SIX-16 made in the late 1940s (film format discontinued 35-40 years ago), a 1954 8 mm cine-camera Paillard-Bolex B8 and a Graflex Crown Graphic from the early 1950s. I mostly used the Crown Graphic to shoot landscape and it’s a great camera but being mostly stuck in the city, i must admit it’s a bit too cumbersome and conspicuous to be great street photography gear 😉

My D5200 is the first camera that my Mom bought me when i started out to learn photography during my early days in college and yes she has a designated photographer for every family trip 😁. This camera has been with me from around 2014 until now and i even brought it to work as well. I've tried several cameras including the mirrorless Fuji camera. This video made me want to fire up the camera again.

    Hey, I have a question - when you switch to the LIVE feed mode that shows you the image on the screen.. I wanted to use that to make a video... When it's set to AUTO on the lens behind the main buttons with two options Auto and Manual.. Whets its set on Auto every 5 seconds there's a sound of something coming from the inside, like its running some sensors or something or moving something inside.. its never heard on the normal mode, without the live preview.. and its gone when you switch that button to manual. so to record a video you need to switch to manual to not hear it every 5 seconds.. do you have something like that too?

    very nice video for this camera model . actually I bought it new in 2014 with a 18-55mm basic lens kit and havent really used that much . the thing is if I sell my new-looking camera with the lens I wont even get half of its price for what i got it for. I bought 50mm lens some years ago too but right now I am thinking to keep the body and maybe get a lense upgrade to say 85mm 1.8g . as I am interested in fashion street style shots .
    should I go for that or it wont be worth it ? considering this is crop sensor (not full frame ) camera so wouldnt 85 appear to be 50mm ? if yes then how can I achieve 85mm results then ?
    would really appreciate your help :D thanks a bunch

    I own a 600D from Canon. I think that it's roughly from the same time period as the Nikon showed in the video.
    I must admit that the focus issues are the biggest problem of those cheaper older bodies. They're absolutely notorious of not being able to just nail it when you need it.

    I bought this camera way back 2015 and still use it with kit and 50mm f1.8g lens. If I want to sell and upgrade my camera lets say with hybrid photo and video capability, and budget around $600-700.
    What camera you suggest Neils?

      Video quality is pretty decent for a camera from that year… bear in mind the 60fps is interlaced, so you only have 30fps in real frames.. The first video’s on my channel are all filmed with this camera!

      Yep 5200 is one of the best. And d3300 for photos still grate too.
      (Both with kit lens even 18-105 it will be terrible in many situations).
      But if you have $350-400 try to find something smaller and faster like hybryd focusing or something like 5d2, 6d, d600, or even 7R - 7S.
      !All in all lens and light - huge prioritiy

    I have this camera. I got it used. I want to make a TH-cam channel. I'm not sure if it works. I have 5 different lenses. Some say VR on them. Is that like virtual reality or something? I'm an old fart and am baffled brother. Do you have a beginners how to it I reset all the settings. My lens are Af-s Nikkor 55-200 (on the camera), Af Nikkor 50mm, Nikkor 135mm Japan, Nikon lens series e 100mm 1 : 2.8, Promaster 62mm.
    I'm disabled and want to make a channel about my life. Maybe a review channel. And a channel about some elderly folks that aren't being treated right. I want their voices to be heard. Nice to meet you all. Jesse
