Great video as always. As a 62 year old climber I liked seeing you climbing up that dead fir with your climbing line nice snug backing up your flip line. I mean you demonstrated it isn’t a big deal, or a time suck and just might save a down elevator situation. The older i get the more I look to tip the odds in my favor. The best training for saw work aloft is saw work on the ground. You'll have a huge advantage over many a starting climber. I was a faller first as well. It

You might not have killed the old battery. You may have just drained it too low to talk to the charger. Give it a jump start from a another fully charged battery for 15 seconds and then give the old battery a try.
Initially I was against the battery saws because I dislike the govt and industry forcing the consumer market into expensive battery power options that require constantly replacing those several hundred dollar batteries. However, the two pros I see with those saws are (1) no warm up needed, and (2) they are ready to cut with a push button instead of a pull cord, which eliminates tree oscillation at the top where it gets very wobbly when yanking on a saw.
If it’s like other lithium batteries, it’s not really dead, but so low the charger thinks it is. If you hook it up to another battery for a few seconds, it will probably charge enough to let the battery charger see it again. I’ve “fixed” 20v dewalt batteries by giving them 12v from a ATV battery for 15 seconds or so. Just need to figure out which terminals in the battery are positive and negative from a good battery (some are marked).
I agree. This is a common problem with various batteries and auto chargers. They think they are smart but aren't really. Just good at getting you to buy more batteries. Do a short session of manual recharge to get the voltage up. Hopefully it isn't like Makita batteries. If they shut down on overheat more than something like 4 times - the circuitry permanently kills the battery pack. Per AVE.
yes, ive done the same thing with tool batteries. its like jump starting a car. you only need to connect it to another battery for 5 seconds or so, then quick put it in the charger. use a multimeter to figure out the polarity and use some small gauge wire that can reach the terminals and youre good to go
As an audio nerd I can appreciate the effort you put into getting good audio in all of your videos. I know filming from different people and cameras and even the drone and then syncing it all up isn't exactly easy but it makes the whole video experience so much more enjoyable. Excellent work with all the video and audio components of all your work. It's easy to take for granted when something is done really well and people don't particularly notice but just wanted you to know I noticed it. Also maybe one day do a little behind the scenes of some of your video/audio setup and techniques for people like me. Keep up the good work.
Isn't August using mostly video and audio straight from his GoPro's? Seems to me that is one way to keep video making manageable. When I use my phone I am more likely to want to use my DJI wireless mic setup. But the mic on the GoPro works better and thoughts of using a wireless mic disappear. If I ever need to start using my wireless mic more, I'll probably ditch the GoPro for the DJI action camera. Then I'll still have sync'd audio/video. I think. I'm just learning.
@@boomupengineering It doesn't sound like straight GoPro audio but if it is from the GP it certainly has a microphone attached to it. I'm not sure how their comm systems works but it's possible they are recording a feed from those helmet mics. The audio seems very detailed and with a close proximity sound. The drones don't record any audio at all so no matter how you are recording your voice and ambient audio you still have to sync it up with the drone footage. Luckily loud noises like saws firing up and the physical motion give a good reference point for lining up audio with video. There would be a dozen ways to record audio but keeping it simple and small would be a prime concern in an environment like this. Audio is not an easy thing to get right but it's very important.

I was once a mover and now I'm a tree guy. Interesting how you connected the two. They both give you those daunting days where you feel overwhelmed, but you take it peice by peice and eventually the job gets done.
I love the little spaces that we work in sometimes, the other day i was working in an alleyway between a dirty old fence and the back wall of a chines restaurant, this was next to a very busy intersection in the middle of town , i could see all this activity going bye that didn't even know i was there , i was quite happy with my little hemlock climb . With tree work no matter where you are your still in the middle of the woods 👍.
Enjoyed your vid. One thing that is puzzling to me is how homeowners watch and wait so long to get rid of their dead trees. Seems this house lived under a whole bunch of them. You sort them out and deal with them pretty nicely.
Another web gem your positive attitude is what the crew feeds off of and keeps them around I’m sure that’s taken years and years. I’m always trying to remain calm and in a positive place in my mind while working. Gods gave me this day to make someone’s problem our crew’s opportunity to shine.
Looks like a good fell to me. Another option would be to lay out some material on each side of the septic tank to bridge over it. Some mats on tires can help prevent damage as well.

Thank You August and Crew! With me being old AND rusty, one thing I appreciate about battery saws is the instant on/off. Starting a gas saw takes planning when you're trying to stay on top of a hard leaning spar, hanging on with only a couple beat up knees and tugging a rope while throwing a saw the other direction. I am truly grateful for every chance I get that proves to myself I can still do it! Great vid!
Years ago I believe you said something to the affect," A good rule of thumb is if you can drop it don't climb it. I live by these simple words. And most people understand that no is a complete sentence . Thanks for the video.

Batteries - maybe huskie can repair the battery you ran dead-dead? I've had a little luck getting drill batt's going again by jumping them to a good battery...gives them enough juice they start taking a charge again. You're a good man August - enjoy your videos and really respect your work!

Enjoyed the video. In the talk up front you mentioned "vibes". The feelings you get doing what you do. I know exactly what you are saying. I love climbing. I love figuring out a tree situation.....developing a plan in my head. A plan I know probably will change as I get mounted up and my perspective changes. If you take care of yourself, as you are doing, I see no reason you can't be climibig many more years and feeling the vibes. I'm kinda slow....don't do difficult limb walks.....don't take too many chances (try to make every move well thought out)....staying as safe as possible in the tree climbing environment. I love tall trees with shorter limbs (no big spreading oaks for me.) Give me a tall evergreen or poplar or cottonwood....I'll figure a way to rig them down if necessary (although bombing is easier and fun). I do metabolic workouts three times per week. Try to eat healthy. And.....I'm a lucky guy. Praise to the Lord. Let's keep it going, August.
Seeing you guys standing at the top of those thin tall trunks reminds me of the Button Boy ceremony the British Navy used to have every year where the new recruits climbed a huge ship’s mast and one stood on the button at the very top. For all the climbing junkies it’s a sight to see.
I climbed one or 2 today that I shouldn’t have honestly but I am still here. I’m learning what is and isn’t good for me personally & we all have a different comfort zone. Sometimes I see you in dead trees and I say hell no but then I find myself in the same situations. We all have to realize what is safe for some may not be safe for others.
I used to get hay delivered from a truck. I learned a technique where you place a bale of hay strategically about 10 feet way and then toss the remaining hay bales onto the far edge of that “fulcrum” bale. The tossed bale will strike the fulcrum and cartwheel end over end down the barn close to where you stack it.

Ive notice over the years that I have got a lot better with my cuts in the air cause i once started on the ground before I started climbing. Great video August!
Good going bro! ❤Our survival depends on our ability to say "No.". My guess is that the sound and vibration coming back at me each time a spike hits the stem tells me a lot about the safety and stability of the stem at that point but it can't tell me much about the stability of the stem further up nor how it'll react to the torque and vibration of me felling it. I jump back and forth between battery and petrol - they both great in different situations!
@@AugustHunickethe canopies had a few long branches pushing it mid fall. But it hit good...*the log bounce was the iffy* part. Stem snapped 😅 I always worry about log bouces and obstructing canopies. I think they can be overlooked. But still...your felling is always super precise! As usual and... Nobody died so......🎉😂
its soo cool to see multiple climbers rocking the monkey beaver setup. its so uniformed and professional. lucky guys to be in your operation. Where i came up, everyone hates being there, and its just a job. i was never even taught tree identification. just how to get up the tree and take the limbs off encroaching on power lines. no passion, no love, no growth, no learning.
Now it could just be the sort of person you are = adaptable to anything for an extended time! *OR* isn't it amazing how you've done this work for so long, no signs of burnout and *LAUGH HARDER, LONGER, MORE OFTEN than when you began this career* ! I found a really good deal on an Stihl MSA200, with an extra battery and charger…these battery saws can be expensive. It’s a great saw for limbing and for my son to get some experience, before getting into gas saws.
I used to have some acreage in Maple valley Washington.... I had property that had alder fur cedar hemlock spruce cottonwood dogwood Willow wild cherry and cascara. Vine maple and something that looks like vine Maple but it was hazelnut. The leaves are different and other things are different. Part of it was gravely and other places swampy.... This logger stopped by and showed me what wild cranberries look like.... You gota hunt for about a half hour just to find 1 cranberry.... That's right I said one..,.. he said what you look for is a long small diameter curved snakey looking piece of straw...... And right on the very end of it is one cranberry smaller than a pea. They are very tough-skinned... You bite down real hard and all of a sudden this real tart strong-tasting cranberry juice fills your mouth with amazing cranberry flavor.
I forgot to mention , I have done some dangerous trees myself I have been climbing since 1994 and getting to the point that I am about to call it quits
Any small business owner will learn over time that saying "NO" will keep you out of trouble & reduce worry & BS in your life

Great points. Audio has always been my weakness, yet some guys like August seem to get it done well without much apparent effort.

I climbed one or 2 today that I shouldn’t have honestly but I am still here. I’m learning what is and isn’t good for me personally & we all have a different comfort zone. Sometimes I see you in dead trees and I say hell no but then I find myself in the same situations. We all have to realize what is safe for some may not be safe for others.

I used to get hay delivered from a truck. I learned a technique where you place a bale of hay strategically about 10 feet way and then toss the remaining hay bales onto the far edge of that “fulcrum” bale. The tossed bale will strike the fulcrum and cartwheel end over end down the barn close to where you stack it.

My guess is that the sound and vibration coming back at me each time a spike hits the stem tells me a lot about the safety and stability of the stem at that point but it can't tell me much about the stability of the stem further up nor how it'll react to the torque and vibration of me felling it.
I jump back and forth between battery and petrol - they both great in different situations!
The battery may not be dead. Give it a wee charge from another battery ( I used paper clips ) and it may be enough for the charger to sense it.

@@AugustHunickethe canopies had a few long branches pushing it mid fall. But it hit good...*the log bounce was the iffy* part. Stem snapped 😅
I always worry about log bouces and obstructing canopies. I think they can be overlooked.
But still...your felling is always super precise! As usual and...

Try hooking another batterie in parallel for a sec so the charger can read it.
its soo cool to see multiple climbers rocking the monkey beaver setup. its so uniformed and professional. lucky guys to be in your operation. Where i came up, everyone hates being there, and its just a job. i was never even taught tree identification. just how to get up the tree and take the limbs off encroaching on power lines. no passion, no love, no growth, no learning.

I found a really good deal on an Stihl MSA200, with an extra battery and charger…these battery saws can be expensive. It’s a great saw for limbing and for my son to get some experience, before getting into gas saws.

Had a 55 foot pine coming up from the roots on a very windy day. Was going to take it down myself, decided to call the pro's.
Man, I admire you. That pine is so full of borer beetle holes. Scare the crap out of me.
I used to have some acreage in Maple valley Washington.... I had property that had alder fur cedar hemlock spruce cottonwood dogwood Willow wild cherry and cascara. Vine maple and something that looks like vine Maple but it was hazelnut. The leaves are different and other things are different. Part of it was gravely and other places swampy.... This logger stopped by and showed me what wild cranberries look like.... You gota hunt for about a half hour just to find 1 cranberry.... That's right I said one..,.. he said what you look for is a long small diameter curved snakey looking piece of straw...... And right on the very end of it is one cranberry smaller than a pea. They are very tough-skinned... You bite down real hard and all of a sudden this real tart strong-tasting cranberry juice fills your mouth with amazing cranberry flavor.
