if i know i need to do something at a specific time, I immediately save it to my phone and my phone tells me when I have to do something or I WILL forget it. Especially as I get older. That's my pro tip on forgetting stuff. Or write it on a note someplace where I look every day like the coffee mugs or the fridge door or the dash of my car. i have literally left myself a post it saying get gas, because i dont look at the fuel gouge but i'll look at a bright pink note.

My mom had great success with raspberries, radishes, and carrots in WA before we first moved to TX. Every year she made jams and jellies from just 2 rows of raspberries. Extras from your harvests are pretty easy to can! Veggies like green beans and asparagus, you just blanch them, then fill your mason jar. Lots of simple recipes for canning. Ball will most likely have the best resources for recipes. You can also sell what your family can't consume to restock for your next season. Permits might not be required if you're not producing a certain amount to sell. Local government offices (Ag office) should have that info or point you in the right direction.

I use to work for the USDA Farm Service Agency, and one thing we would recommend to new homesteaders is to look into the local agricultural colleges and their extension programs. The one in my state that was super popular was Clemson Extension (SC) and they would do a ton of workshops and whatnot to talk about soil health, science of food, equipment details, etc. Even though I am not a farmer/gardener, I found a lot of the workshops fascinating and considered taking a few just so I could learn more about the farmers I was serving in my community. Not all the workshops were for homestead level, but there were a bunch that was and even a few of my clients would just email the local extension agent for general questions. Just something to consider :)

You did great! Not in your area, however for tips and tricks on seed starting, seed saving and such, Homestead Heart is a great resource. Also for preserving the harvest she is amazing. She walks you thru step by step. Another great gardener and COOK is Whippoorrwill Holler. I have been canning for 35 years and I find some of the younger canners can go "rouge" and I don't think you want that for yourself or your child. Friendly tip, when watering seeds, use mist instead of the shower feature on hose. Ask me how I know this? LOLOL Hollis and Nancy have great videos. They do from seed to harvest on items. You say you don't know what you are doing, but your garden last year was beautiful, and I learned how to build a worm bin from the 2 of YOU!!!! You guys are doing GREAT!

Can’t wait to follow this journey!! I’m also an out of sight out of mind type of person. Just remember how these seeds propagate in the “wild.” Usually when we soak the seeds or stratify or chit them, we’re simulating a season. And Mother Nature is not perfect. The seeds fall off the plants and sit on the ground getting soaked and dried out multiple times. They’re very resilient and I’m sure you’re going to be swimming in plants!

I have been gardening for a very long time and I have never had great luck growing onions! I have tried a number of methods. Then I just gave up but I'm going to try again this spring. We use onions a lot and I would love to get a good harvest.
    Love this content!

The Beginner’s Garden! Jill has a TH-cam channel by the same name but I listen to her podcasts. She is down to earth and goes through everything: garden planning (she also has a course) seed selection, raised beds, in ground planting, soil amendments, even sometimes recipe suggestions and preservation

Another favorite of mine is Mark over at Self Sufficient Me. He's down in Australia, so he can plant things we can't, but I've still learned so much from his videos. They feel like an uncle joking around while teaching you stuff. 🥰

I'm excited to see how they grow. I think it's cool that we get to learn along with you guys on gardening and home projects. Zack you do a great job in front of camera. It's perfectly imperfect and that's what's so endearing & relatable about you and Kristi. 💕

With the sticks, you can staple the packet to your sticks also. that is what my gramps did.

I’m going through the same journey, a lot of learning and patience with yourself. We are looking for a home with acreage, so in the meantime, I’m researching permaculture, food that grows in my zone and practicing by doing a simple raised bed garden temporarily. From the words of Jess at Roots and Refuge Farm, turn your waiting room into your classroom! Try looking at Joel Salatin for permaculture design/regenerative agriculture along with Justin Rhodes, awesome ideas that are a whole new level of homesteading! Can’t wait to see the beautiful garden this summer!
