So helpful. I have been a garden dabbler for years. I forget sometimes to provide that initial liquid boost. The very best results I have had however is when using home made leaf based compost. Amazing garden production that year.

I dont have my own compost so I bought some bags of it, What should I look for in bagged compost? The one I have is wood products, composted rice hulls, composted green waste, composted chicken manure. I am growing in pots. and apparently the organic all purpose planting mix I used is fir bark, forest products and chicken manure. this is my 3rd year trying to garden and have increased the number of fabric bags I am growing in. I watch all your videos. I am getting there. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge
So I video on it. There is no rule to on how fully the composted is actually broken down. SO anything can be compost. I typically say, buy the bag you like, inspect it and research it. Even call and ask the company. Once you find when that is good stuff. Stick with it. When in doubt mushroom compost is pretty good. Thank you so much for these last two videos! I was planning on buying a TON of bagged potting mix for my new container garden this weekend. You’ve saved my family so much money. In fact, the price of organic container mix has been the only thing holding me back from really building the garden I want to have. Again, thank you.
Even the organic label is a bit of farce because soil bags arent regulated. Good luck. Always Great informative content Gary , God bless you for teaching millions of people to grow their own food , especially during these hard times . Have a wonderful weekend With your Wonderful wife . Mrs Josette Tharp Montgomery County , Texas 🙏🏻
I was listening to the soil scientist "gardening in Canada" and she she had a LONG explanation of why grocery store tomatoes taste as bad as they do. It boils down to too much nitrogen the farmers use (to increase the crop production) -- and the excess nitrogen causes the protein (amino acids) in tomatoes to be too high thus they have a "watered-down taste" and thats why home grown are sweeter and have a far better tomato taste. So more is not better if you quality not quantity. She confirms your "low and slow" is the BEST way to fertilize your garden.
Low and slow is key. And her description of why is on point. Yesterday I sunk four 20 gallon black nursery pots with a hole cut in the bottom, planted your tomato varieties, Homestead, Rutgers, Marglobe, Cherry Orange! I think next year I'll do a row of peppers. Used TWO of the cheapest bag of soil at Home Depot, "Kellog", 3 cu. ft. each. It was a lot of shredded hardwood though so I mixed in a bit of coco coir and organic granular. I probably could've bought a bag of peat and extended the soil to like 6 sunken containers, but I didn't have either the peat nor the containers, they seem really rare in my area to be honest, or the nurseries are very hush-hush about selling them. I also did varying levels of depth for the sunken containers, like scaling upwards so the ones in the back get more sun but it shouldn't matter much, but adds some kinda cool design. I wonder if plants raised up with survive the frost better because the air is warmer. Many experiments going on. I want to get some Vermisterra but your coupon code is missing, as soon as I see it I might order some!

Nope. Nothing on a bag has to be proven nor is regulated. I just read about it again. Now granted some companies might be able to tell you what's in it and all that. I feel like smaller mushroom companies or compost companies can give you more information.
"Go crazy with the cheese whiz!" hahaha! That was awesome! But your approach is the best approach. What is the adage - this is not a sprint? Building good soil just takes a little time - and strategy. But it doesn't have to cost a fortune. Thank you!

Thank you Gary. All this information has helped me be a better gardener. I followed this advise when I set up/revitalized my 20x 4 x 22 deep beds and pots this year. The peppers are doing great, the sweet potatoes are happy with the added Phosphorus amendments, the blackberries are great as well as the strawberry tower. My summer gardening is coming to end about June first. It's been great so far. I live in Florida zone 9. As I don't use our native soil for anything... as it is really beach sand, I have learned how to build soil with mixes of top soil, peat moss and compost plus amendments as you have taught. If there is one thing that I have learned from you this year is the importance of adding Organic /compost to the garden. I had to buy bagged compost this year and mix it in, but next year, I will have my own. My next year starts August first. We have two growing seasons here in Florida. So melons first, then tomatoes in Sept. onions , cold crops in Nov. etc. So here are four things that I have learned from you. 1. Plan ahead. Know your planting times and temp/frost dates. Best advise you gave to start. Print out local US Climate data for your area. Weather Spark is also good place to start. 2. Setting up Grow lights/ trays. Timing your seeds to your weather. 3. Pest and Disease control. What works what doesn't work. When to spray/ how to spray test. 4. Soil building and making. The mixes and importance of compost/ organics in soil.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks to you I understand the soil better and how to avoid problems. Even if you live up north in zone 7 some of your ideas work here and some work even if you don't have the same problems I have in Zone 9. I live in a high pest/disease pressure zone. The native sand is high alkaline low organic soil. So more compost and organic material in the beds the better... it prevents problems. Yeah about okra, ... it's a common mistake in Florida to grow. Why? I asked the farmer at the local farm co-op. One big problem... Root-knot nematode magnet. They thrive and come far and wide to okra. He even told me he puts a small okra patch near his garden to attract them away from his raised beds. I didn't know that, so yeah, I planted okra a few years ago in my raised beds. It caused problems. I had to take out the soil the next season and add boil water to it one wheel barrel full at a time. It worked. After using a king kooker and 3 propane tank refills. Also planning cover crops like Florida Brown Mustard this year. You can buy the seed cheap at the farm store. Root knot nematodes don't like it, and they don't like the compost of it either.

Good morning Gary , once again , We had to drive a good 45 minutes to another Home depot in order to buy . Black Kow manure as our local was sold out , we bought 20 bags to help amend our Dirt/soil plus to mix with bags of kellogg raised bed / potting mix - I used it last year , alot cheaper then the Green bag stuff and does amazing with mixing with like you are teaching us , plus peatmoss , extra perlite , worm castings and 13-13-13 - My husband tilled a 2nd plot last weekend , that we had put cardboard down on back in November 2021 , plus a tarp , Wow what a difference , We are planting Sweet corn in a 14 ft x 20 ft plot , To freeze , give to family & friends in our Neiborhood . I'm starting a raised flower bed this week to create a pollinator area in my yard. Do I use this same method for flowers? I do have access to compost and double ground mulch as well through my city biosphere. I plan to use both of those resources. I used your methods growing my "pandemic veggie garden" and it did well. Hopefully I can get back to a veggie garden one day but for now flowers it is!
They same method works. I am glad you got veggies. BTW tuck in some pepper plants in your flower garden and scatter some radish seeds through out. You can make an edible landscape. Good luck. Hi Gary, I just bought alfalfa pellets. Will add a handful when I plant dahlias. Is it OK to use it in the rest of my garden? If I recall, you used it in the fall for over wintering your garden. Great video, thank you.
I use it all over. Mostly in the fall as they need to breakdown but you can use them now. I built a new raised bed this spring I even made my own soil I usually just buy the soil by the Bag and I know what you mean about all the advertising on gardening products Its crazy

I think my confusion is reading that Tomatoes and Peppers do well in slightly acidic soil, but adding garden lime to add calcium raises the PH so how do we know if our soil is correct - should we buy a soil PH tester? Thanks - just learning....
Long-time subscriber here... I think he would say that he's just adding a small amount at the time of planting select crops to rule out calcium deficiency. He usually mentions this regarding tomatoes because of blossom end-rot, of which calcium deficiency is said to be among the possible causes. You wouldn't want to go crazy with the lime all over the garden, or amend an entire bed every year, and especially not for crops that prefer acidity. And if your soil mix is 1/3 peat moss, or you amend with some at time of planting, that will probably tend to buffer for slight acidity as well. And just good, healthy, organically enriched soil, in general, probably tends to "self-buffer" towards a neutral PH. So, you'd probably have to really overdo it with the lime to bump it alkaline too high and for any length of time. He also mentioned that he does it more for *containers*. That's probably because they tend to leech nutrients faster, you have to water them a bit more often, there isn't quite the bio-diversity of larger volumes of soil, etc., so deficiencies are more of a concern.
I agree with Genji. And slightly more acidic.... I always say what does that mean. Tomatoes and peppers can manage 5.5 to 7 pH. So closer to 6 might be optimal but often not visible to you and I. Dont buy a pH tester. The just arent reliable. Send soil out for a soil test if you are curious. However, when amending beds and adding compost, etc, you will soon create a fine pH for everything. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks to you both - I'm subscribed to your channel Gary and CaliKim's as well. I got the big galvanized metal containers for my first try this year for peppers and tomatoes - we'll see how it goes. It's all a learning process~
You can use a 10-10-10 but that is like 2-3x more than the NPK I show. So go about 1/2 the amount. Last year I watched your video explaining container gardening by cutting out the bottom of a container and digging a whole to set it in. It was so nice to harvest the fruits not laying on the soil as I have a small space. Thank you for making all the videos that help us grow. This year I am growing in 18 gallon storage totes. My question is about how often to fertilize the veggies? I used Dr Earth for vegetables a month ago when I planted the seedlings and they are growing well. I started seeing a little yellowing on the leaves of the tomatoes and squash so used some Epson salt per a video you made. I also use worm tea. How often do you suggest I need to add supplements to the soil?
So glad to make them and very glad to help. I am glad it worked. So Dr. Earth works but its nothing special and way to expensive IMO. Once you do ES 1x that is enough. I would give them some basic water soluble fertilizer like any brand fish emulsion. Water solubles can fee used every 2-3 weeks depending on plant size and how the beds were prepped. Use that (FE) primarily if you see yellowing. I know u have said but I'm 7/16 dumb is garden lime good for potting soil seed starts in cups do u worry about calcium for starts I noticed the blue stuff doesnt have calcium if my eyes arent decieving me.
I dont worry about that for seed starts. MG has it in different products but you dont need a lot of calcium. Gary should we add boiling water to the peat before mixing? I mixed my own about 2-3 weeks ago for tomatoes and peppers in containers. I have fungus gnats now. Was it likely in one of my ingredients? In the soil of the transplants I bought? Happened after planting?
Not for outdoor use. Only when using peat indoors. They can occur outdoors but Nature eventually takes care of them. Gary I used peat moss for the top few inches of my raised beds. It doesn't seem like it staying wet. Plants have not shown stress but something doesn't seem right about water penetration. What should I do?
Peat can be hydrophobic. Once wet it is wonderful but if it is just peat on the surface, it will struggle. As the sun dries it too fast. If you mix it with stuff that is best. I would work it into the soil and soak it. That should help. Good luck. Awsome video Gary!! I got a great deal on fish fertilizer and a product called moorbloom at the end of the year sales. Like 5.00 a gallon. The numbers on fish are 5-1-1 the bloom is 0-10-10 so by tweaking the mixes I can get some interesting npk mixes or just stay low and balanced. Have you ever done this? It would be cool to hear about these type of tweak mixes. Have a great day!!
I am actually experimenting with Moorbloom on peppers. But I didnt get that deal. Thats great. If you do full fish and 1/2 bloom that is like a 5-5-5. I would try that on non leafy greens. Interesting idea. SO here is the thing.... You buy a 3-4-4 fertilizer and toss it around the garden. When it lands (and many people think this) that it lands as a 3-4-4. It doesnt you scatter it and you get well below 1-1-1 were it lands. The point is slow and steady NPK so the plant roots can find. Compost gives us that plus all the wonderful organic matter for roots to grow in. Organic fertilizer lacks the later. Yeah OMRI is specific for like peat moss or maybe perlite or a specific fertilizer. OMRI is saying it meets standards of A B or C. But when stuff is blended and put in a bag, it can be anything. Because its not regulated you can put words on it like organic, or natural, etc.
I think it is worth using. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
Thank you. This is what I am doing right now. I have compost, peat, blood and bone, organic granular fertlizer, some Azomite, a microrhyzza stuff. I have Neptune's Harvest liquid. What is your opinion on using perlite, vermiculite, sand and clay in Raised Beds? Green sand. What the hell is green sand?
I don't have any topsoil. Just peat and compost. What ratio do u recommend for that? I live on a sand bar in the Pacific Ocean. Ocean Shores WA. I should have gotten some topsoil.
Greens said is just minerals and such. You really dont need it for clay soils. I would not use perlite or vermiculite in the raised beds. Just not needed. The other stuff you have still break up your soil. Compost year after year too. If it seems like it needs more, you can use sand but dont over think it. You have good stuff. So good compost is great. Depending on what it is like 50-75% compost/25-50% peat. Unless you made the compost, it is often of blend of organic matter, earth and wood which means you got topsoil and such mixed in. If in doubt fill the beds a couple different ways. What i do as well. Except i don't even use compost i just mixed the Bone meal in the ground and yes over time i see the result after 2-3 years the soil is loose and fluffy. I just ordered Perlite frist time extra specialty for my plants ground and pots. Yes i am not going to lie i do buy cheap soil the cheapest i go $ 5. Why spent on expensive soil if i am going to add all the amenities always. To top after i mixed the soil with Bone meal i sprinkle a bite on and top as well covered with Mulch( i live in the desert state) lots of Mulch. Like my Basil i never add anything i just water it every 2-3 days that is it and it thrives. My plants does just fine 😁. If i go of what everyone's recommend I'll be BROKE in no time LOL. My parents never used anything to grow our food just urine for fertilizer that was it. They never purchased anything. We had loaded of vegetables every year. They don't even pruned not that i remember as a teenager. This was back in the 80s and 90s.

Don't use cardboard or paper products in the garden I worked in pulp and paper Mills and they're loaded with chemicals organic gardeners use these at times which I think is disingenuous

AMEN
Thanks for mentioning that turning your soil will not wreck your soil. Been turning mine for years. Homemade soil is the way to go.
Well, it's not good to do it yearly, once or twice, and then if you take care of it, it shouldn't need tilled.
Yep. The shovel turn is very different than a tiller pulverizing.

Good luck.

Yea Kellog was a lot of wood years back when I checked it out. Keep experimenting. That is they way to find out. I just put the code in.
You are just a blessing. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I appreciate it so much.

Thanks for the organic tip I didn't realize the soil was not tested
Thank you!
Slow and steady with building soil for sure

That is so good to hear. Ever try okra down there? They love the heat. Nice on making your own compost too. You seem to have it down now. Good luck.

In the fall I get 100% composted cow manure from Lowes for $1.78 for a 1 CF bag, when I put my garden beds to rest for the winter.
That is the best way to do it for manures

Good morning Gary , once again ,
We had to drive a good 45 minutes to another Home depot in order to buy .
Black Kow manure as our local was sold out , we bought 20 bags to help amend our Dirt/soil plus to mix with bags of kellogg raised bed / potting mix - I used it last year , alot cheaper then the Green bag stuff and does amazing with mixing with like you are teaching us , plus peatmoss , extra perlite , worm castings and 13-13-13 -
My husband tilled a 2nd plot last weekend , that we had put cardboard down on back in November 2021 , plus a tarp , Wow what a difference ,
We are planting Sweet corn in a 14 ft x 20 ft plot ,
To freeze , give to family & friends in our Neiborhood .
As 4 corn are $5.98 already husked in the grocery stores around here ,
What happen to 10 ears for $1.00 ????
My beans are doing great , already have ripe sweet cherry tomatoes & lots of Roma, ( amish paste , Tachi & San Marzino's but still green for now )
I cant wait for my different varieties of slicer tomatoes to get big & ripe , Im so looking forward to a wounderful Tomatoe Sandwich , ( sliced tomatoes with Mayo , yum yum and finally i get to taste different varieties , WHAT A BLESSING , THANK YOU for teaching me how to start our own transplants !!!!!
I owe it all to you Sir 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thank you so much

Fish Emulsion used every 10days.

It really is just peat, wood, earth and fertilizer. No matter how they try to jazz it up.

I think my confusion is reading that Tomatoes and Peppers do well in slightly acidic soil, but adding garden lime to add calcium raises the PH so how do we know if our soil is
correct - should we buy a soil PH tester?
@@genjiharvester1876 Thanks - this makes perfect sense, especially for containers 🙂
However, when amending beds and adding compost, etc, you will soon create a fine pH for everything.

will I put too much fertilizer? Is it a thing to be concerned about?
If you don’t have organic granular fertilizer is it okay to use something like 10-10-10
You can use a 10-10-10 but that is like 2-3x more than the NPK I show.

I dont think so. A lot of times the nursery planting material has a lot of wood chips in it. So I think this is pretty close.

If you have alot of compost... can you mix it 50/50 with the peat? Or do i still need aome topsoil too?
No 50 50 works. As long as the compost is fully broken down and done.

Did u wet the peat first? I believe that is a must. Not sure now that plants are in how to remedy. Good luck

Compost is under 1-1-1? I always wondered. I thought compost would have more
SO here is the thing....

Does OMRI listed mean anything? Like does it support that the product is organic?
Yeah OMRI is specific for like peat moss or maybe perlite or a specific fertilizer. OMRI is saying it meets standards of A B or C. But when stuff is blended and put in a bag, it can be anything. Because its not regulated you can put words on it like organic, or natural, etc.
What is your opinion of mushroom manure in containers?
I think it is worth using.

I follow your recipe every year for my containers but I also add 1/3 Perlite. Do you still use Perlite for your containers?
I do for starting mixes at the farm but not too often in containers any more. If your mix is working dont change it but you could go to 1/4 pelite and not notice much of a difference.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN The mulch looks just like your bed that has the 3 tomato plants in it, one in each corner.
Question how do I know if the bag of compost is aged?
Well only be knowing the product. But it should smell sweet and earthy. And be a nice deep brown fluffy material. But you dont really know till you try it and see how the product does

What do you do with leaf mold
It's just compost made with all or mostly leaves. Just use it like compost.

Hey Gary..if I don’t have my own compost, can I use bagged composted manure?
You can but I always say you have to check it out for quality. They all vary greatly.

Gary: I see your tomatoes are in. What are your night time temps there? Our temps are still in the 30s at night.
I bit early upper 40's but more so 50's now. So I should be good. Early peppers are a bit beat up but they should recover.

Is there anything wrong with just adding worms instead of worm castings? great videos
It is concentrated casting which I love for containers. But adding worms works. I like to use some in the planting hole and I leave the rest for worms and soil life.

Great method and you are right about all the stuff recommend and how it can cause you to go broke.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN subscribed for many years now already, love your very informative videos. Keep up the good work
Well I did love watching your channel until you said, "billions of year's"!!! So sorry but the bible says God created the Heavens and the Earth only about 7,000 years ago and I can't continue to watch anyone who is against Him or His Words, God Bless you and your beautiful garden ❤️🙏😇
Bye Karen. I can't imagine living in 2022 and believing the earth is only 7000 years old. You've been played.
Well thats a bit off stretch to use my words that way. But the earth is older than 7000 years so I guess would would disagree on things. I still wish you luck in your garden. Cheers

Don't use cardboard or paper products in the garden I worked in pulp and paper Mills and they're loaded with chemicals organic gardeners use these at times which I think is disingenuous

Tilling is a lot of hard work for mediocre results. No-till is the wave.
