    Tip: take those labels off the trees and give each tree a number with a stake (more permanent). Keep the labels in a binder with their corresponding number to keep track. You will need it in the future. It helps a lot when tracking information. Also, a great ground cover is purple creeping thyme. You can get seeds. All the best to you.

    Our land used to be farm land, so there were just a few small trees there, put in by the builder. My husband planted some oak and other trees with the help of our kids 25 + years ago. We took pictures of them by one of the main tree every year for a long time. This tree is now HUGE and provides shade over our bedroom! My husband also digs up the volunteer trees, pots them, and offers to plant them in our neighbors'/friends' homes. It's so much fun to watch our baby trees grow in their yards!!

      Same! I so badly wish we could do a honey crisp but I don’t think it would do well here, I’m not really sure. We already have 4 huge trees on our property, a pretty small backyard but a quite large front/side yard for town) and a 5th tree we had to have cut down last year bc it was dying. I’ve asked and asked my SO if we could at least do a small garden in the back because we already have flower beds out, but he doesn’t want to “deal” with it. Like, apparently I start projects and never finish most of them🤷🏻‍♀️ I won’t say if he’s right, but we do have a whole room with half finished furniture, projects, paintings, etc. 😅

    Put cardboard boxes down before you mulch. You can cut them around the trees and that's the best way to keep the weeds and grass out.

    In the fall spray your trees with dormant oil to keep the fruit flies down and in the spring spray with sulfur to keep the mildew down. An old guy down my street told me a bit of advice that I thought was nuts but it works, in the spring before the fruit trees flower, roll up a newspaper and whack the bark around the base a few times, it causes the trees to think they are under attack and the will produce more fruit.

  • @jackattack4321
    @jackattack4321 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Just a heads up about apples.... most aren't self pollinating. So make sure that you have compatible apple trees to pollinate your honeycrisp otherwise you will have very few /no fruit. While they are delicious apples, they can be a tricky variety to deal with. Apples can get some pretty awful diseases that need managing and monitoring. Good luck with the little orchard.
    From your friendly neighborhood apple breeder

  • @TalieofWaterdeep
    @TalieofWaterdeep 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    For the ground cover in the orchard, when in Mallorca I saw the orchards had wildflowers under the trees. I guess it helps with attracting pollinators. You can get perennial wild flowers as hydroseed

    Kristi, I don’t get on here much anymore but I’m PRAYING you see this. I posted here a few times last year when I lost my daughter at 4 months pregnant. I received support and was so grateful. After a year of being told I have problems conceiving, I AM PREGNANT. 😭😭😭😭 This is my miracle, my rainbow baby, and I just wanted you/the people who gave me such support to know because following your journey of motherhood has truly inspired me and changed my life. I’ve been watching you for 6-7 years and I wanna thank you for helping me really become the person, and soon to be mother, that I am. I’ve had terrible experiences over the last several years with mental health and you have quite literally walked me through my journey. Seeing you come out strong has changed my life. 💗

    It’s like a more relaxed realistic(to my life at least) version of Garden Answer! Absolutely loving the videos on this channel! Seriously obsessed! Oh how we have missed you Kristi! I know you needed time. I’m so glad you have been sharing your journey with us. My son just turned 13😳btw I swear it happened over night! Anyways the first year of his life was beyond tough for me, thank god I had my moms help. I too had severe post partum. Like I’ve never seen anybody other then you have it as bad as I did. It’s truly something you can’t fathom going through until you do. It felt like it would never end and I would never sleep or feel normal ever again. It was terrifying and so unbearable. Anyways, I knew eventually you would feel better, but I would have never told you that in the worst of it. Nobody wants to hear that shit in the worst moments nor does it help. I’m so happy to see you doing better and using your platform to be open and honest about it and bring more awareness to it, and letting people know it’s normal and YOU CAN GET THROUGH IT. So many things we don’t talk about and we would all be better off if we did! Anyways rant over! I’m obsessed with these videos of your house and property and such! Definitely loving them and can’t get enough. Also your sons voice is the sweetest most precious thing ever. Motherhood looks amazing on you! Sending lots of love from Idaho girl!

    I have two apple trees that we planted the year we moved in, then two years ago had to remove a dying ash tree in my front yard, so I used that as an excuse to plant a crab apple tree meant for cooking and eating, and also planted two plums and a pear tree as well. We also have currant and cherry bushes, and five separate garden beds (A big veggie bed, a bed for herbs and lettuce, one for raspberries, one for strawberries, and a three sisters bed with popcorn pole beans and pumpkins). Last year I also put in a wild flower bed, and this year I am redoing one of my landscaping beds with rose bushes and lavender and other perennial herbs. And we also have 3 chickens in our side yard. Our yard isn't enormous, about a third of an acre, and we fit this stuff in by using food bearing plants for all of the landscaping.
    I don't know if you like to plant tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant anywhere on your property, but make sure that you plant the black walnut really far away from where you would like to grow those veggies. Black walnut roots produce a chemical called juglone that poisons the soil against anything in the nightshade family.

    About your apple tree that was fallen over. There is an interesting seasonal documentary about Yew Gardens and the trees they have- a large tree there was uprooted by a storm and that ended up saving it. Something about soil compaction around the roots being bad for the tree, but the lifting of the soil ended up being good for it. Trees are really amazing plants. Your orchard is really spectacular! Such a dream!

    We have a frost peach and a hardy red nectarine, also in PNW. Both suffer with peach leaf curl but the nectarine has been most effected. Copper fungicide and a regular organic spraying schedule can help to keep it in check. Planting oregano around the base can keep the spore numbers down over our wet winters as well, but it's invasive when grown wild so keep that in mind. Good luck! We're considering pulling our nectarine and buying a new tree now that we've learned how to treat the curl.

    I built my chicken coop in urban dallas and I’m so proud of it. I wish I could live in a rural area. I’d have bees too.

      A tree will put out water suckers if it gets over-pruned, so you might want to just trim a few at a time.

    I love these videos! So, if you can, please make more! I totally understand why you guys took a break from this channel. You had much more important things to take care of and get through.
    I hope your orchard thrives and I can't wait to see updates on, not only these trees, but also on your entire property!
    Thank you so much for providing all of the videos you do on both channels! I really appreciate you and all of your hard work!!

    I grew up around orchards. My parents are from the Wenatchee Valley area and my grandparents used to have different orchards from Leavenworth down to Wenatchee & up in the Methow Valley where my grandma grew up. No matter what the Season, the orchards were one of my favorite places to be. On that note, yes apples prefer a leader branch, peaches and apricots are healthier without a leader. They need to have what’s called a wide crotch, meaning trim the branches that are growing straight up & keep the ones growing out. I like the way you described it as a bowl. Your apples should do just fine although you might want to invest in a smudge pot to protect them from any late Spring freeze that can kill off new growth, or early Autumn freeze that will destroy your crop before it’s ready for harvest. I’m excited to see how your orchard grows. I hope your little one enjoys his orchard as much as I did when I was a kid. 🌱🍏🍑🍒🍐🌳

    You guys should look into the Cosmic Crisp apple, since you're in Washington. They are our family's favorite apple. I think they're crossed with the Honeycrisp and Enterprise varieties. They're literally perfect.

    Pine straw at the base of the trees keeps the moisture in. You could do a circle of pine straw at the bottom and then mulch everywhere you walk.. hope that makes sense. Looks amazing!!!!

    What a blessing to get some fruit trees in there to enjoy. I used to love just going in the back yard to grab an apple or pear. I do think some are too close together though perhaps. The Honey Crisp should be 10' apart if dwarf, 20' if they aren't. Do take time to look up planting distance before they take root in case you need to move them further apart. You want them to get all the sun and nutrients they need to fill up with fruit in a few years. I'm so jealous and hope one day to have fruit trees again.

    No worries about being away from the channel. Life happens. I'm happy you are having such a great time on your property! My partner and I also live in Western WA and we have tiny property now. We're working up to pretty much what you're doing. I mean. Goals. I love watching you just going for it! Thank you for being so open and real about what is and isn't working. ❤️

    When your kiddo said "mommy" and then " eww" just cracked me up. I swear your kiddo reminds me of my oldest lol. I always had to be on my toes with him and as hard as it was...it was also a blast and Iooking back I wouldn't change a thing...except maybe giving myself a few extra hours of sleep
