Interesting. Looks really great. The only difference that is discernible without being a nerd about it is that green cast in the Rockinons. In Resolve, I suppose a simple -1 in green (then scaling back to 1/2 or a quarter to taste perhaps -1/4 yellow) for printer lights would really help this to be a closer match.
Thanks for checking out the video! Yeah this is with zero color matching in post. So I think with minimal effort like you mentioned you could get them very very close.
For the difference in price vs. quality, Rokinon wins hands down. If an ASC were to secretly use Rokinon’s on a major studio feature, no one would tell the difference. It really boils down to how you light a scene and not which of these brands is best. Great time to be alive as a filmmaker.
Thanks for watching. I’d love to see a Hollywood film or even a large indie do that like you said - shoot on some cheaper lenses but don’t hold back on the lighting or the color grade, and then see if people really notice anything. Would be a really cool experiment to try. I remember watching the BTS of Crank 2 with Jason Statham and they were using these tiny Sony Handycams for a lot of the action stuff and when I watched the movie I never questioned it. Looked great. Only knew from watching the BTS. They had run them through a legit color process though.
True! Tho I have had some vintage lenses break without dropping - likely from old age. Focus gears, etc. and had an issue with a Fujinon Cabrio zoom as well that just needed to be serviced.
@@FilmJams I had a Rokinon 85 "fall apart" internally, but turns out a friend of mine who was a wedding guest mentioned to me they saw my 2nd videographer drop it earlier that night. He never owned up to it either. But yeah vintage lenses, you never know the drop history on those haha
Surprising results, The Rokinon hold up darn good. Its often gentle differences in the looks of a lease that can have a huge impact on the Image. The cookes are still Legendary!
Yes for sure! The subtleties do make a difference. The skin tones on the Cooke’s and the flares were the biggest differences I noticed. They are sharper too but not a huge difference there. And indeed the Cooke‘s are legendary!
I was surprised also about how well the rokinon hold up ! I even like the rokinon better lot of the time ! Lot of rainbow effect with the flare on the Cooke which I didn't expect. There is a green tint to the Rokinon (or that was the lighing :p). For the 50mm, he wasn't sitting at the same place (or was leaning differently. back light got moved..), so yea the Cooke was better lit with an hair light... I think you can see in latter shot that it was pointed toward the camera and not toward his back.
Marc Olivier Chouinard thanks for watching! Yes the Rokinon does have that green tint to the skin tones a bit more. We were doing the lens flare tests with each lens and you’re right the Leko flare light got a slight adjustment as we were filming. But the goal of that light was to flare the lens not necessarily a hair light - but I agree would have been better if it was in same position.
Own these little Roki CineDS lenses, and always pleased with their performance, given the price. Of course, S4s are lovely, but they bring a lot of mojo (?) / flavor (?) to the image. What I was really impressed with in your comparison is the limited breathing in the Rokinons. This is often where inexpensive stuff falls apart. Are they a bit "flat?" Yes. So are the Xeens. I feel the same way about the CP. series lenses. Great review, thank you!!!
Thanks for watching Eric! Yes hard to beat the Rokinons for the price. I still have them in my kit and they still work great for a lot of projects. I agree the CP and Xeens are a bit flat. Have you tried the Canon CN-E? To me, they pop a bit more and are quite affordable on the used market now.
The only think I like more about the cook is them flares. Those lil rainbow thingies are cool, but not 10x times the price cool enough. Rokinon can shoot with a larger depth of field, on larger sensors, while being significantly lighter and smaller.
Hey! Thanks for checking out the video. I hear that. The Cooke flares are one of my favorite things about them too. The skin tones are also hard to beat. But yeah you can definitely still make great images with lenses costing way less. The Cooke are nice but I think like one other commenter put it they’re only a few percent better. And unless you want that specific look and have the budget, the Rokinon can get you where you’re going for a lot cheaper.
You can definitely use Rokinon lenses on the 6K. My favorites are the 50mm and 85mm. I’d suggest watching the video in 4K on a large monitor to see how they perform against the Cooke’s to make your own conclusions if they’re sharp enough for you, but a lot of filmmakers use them.
Once again the Rokinon lenses, which so many love to hate, hold up pretty well. The Cooke separate colors better and are brighter, easily more robust construction. I presume they are more consistently matched within a set than the Rokinons, too. However, those cheap Rokinons are pretty great for the dirt low price. I would like to see the Rokinons compared to other low cost cine lenses, like the DZOfilm Vespids, Meike FF cine, and Dulens lenses. We are so fortunate to have affordable options.
Thanks for watching Dave! Completely agree. Great time to be filmmakers. I think the vespids vs Rokes would make a great test. I’ll put it in our queue!
Hi David : you could also mention 3D get's a lot deeper with the Cooke 35mm... you see a lot more of the set in OOF areas either in the front & in the background. The Rokinon just washes & eats everything, even the talent face. So if you pay a 1 million set and that your $350 Rokinon eats it for breakfast, not allowing people to see it in the background, or recognizing who's face is behind or what's the expression of the talent, you're happy... Hope you get the idea. The Cooke 50 mm is just as bad as the Rokinon in that department... but shows so much more def... big surprises here & there.

Yes! I’m not sure if they come in Fuji FX mount so double check that. If not, you can get a EF to FX mount adapter and then they will work with that for sure. And remember no autofocus with these cinema lenses :) good luck!
I remember color grading Rokinon cine lens footage and those shadows on the face are nasty, they are green when you start fooling around and it makes the image look pretty bad unless you absolutely nail the lighting exposure in camera.
Yeah Komodo has an RF mount, and Rokinons even come in RF mount as well, so could be a great native option. You could also adapt the EF ones with RF to EF adapter. Rokinons are not the best lenses ever made, but they are solid, and definitely affordable and great for starting out!
No breathing tests? Looking at the bokeh tests where you rack focus, this is where the Cookes seem to pull away from the Rokinon and show their value. The Cookes don't breathe much at all.
Yeah the bokeh test also doubled as our breathing test. I agree this is one spot the cooke’s have an advantage. I also like the skin tone colors a bit more on the Cookes. Thanks for watching!

I’m sure you could make some great images with that combo. If you like the way the lenses look here in the video, you can expect to get similar results. Hope that helps!
I dunno... the Rokinons are 'nice' but for me, just too sharp and digital. I know it's almost cliché at this point but Cooke S4s really do take off that digital edge, just a softer tone but still with some punch. Just my favorite all around lenses.
Thanks for watching Ronin! I agree. The Cooke just has that special look....the Cooke Looke! Hard to beat. Every time we shoot on them...someone always says, "can't explain why, but there's something cinematic about those lenses"....:D
@@FilmJams Right!? I can't even explain it. There's just a certain look to them. I got a super old Cooke Varotal and even that looks amazing, like anamorphic without the stretch. There's just 'magic sauce' in that glass.
@@ronineditor9920 oooh I’ve heard the Varitols are nice! Yeah exactly haha. I wish I could buy more Cooke but so expensive! The Panchro Full frames look amazing.
I noticed that you have the Cooke S4 set in your equipment list.... i bet the deposit on that rental is pretty hefty :) Were "ALL" of the Harry Potter movies done with the Cookes ??? I really like the looks but was curious how much of the "look" that i like came from the lens vs what was done in the color grading process.
Haha yes! We collect gold doubloons upfront! Or if you have Production Insurance will avoid that. Prisoner of Azkaban, Halfblood Prince, Goblet of Fire, Deathly Hallows 1 & 2 all on Cooke S4. Some have Angenieux Optimo zooms as additional lenses. Plus they’re all shot on film which has a huge impact on the look too. And they had one of the best color houses grading it...so yeah all-around dream team setup! Sorcerer’s Stone was Panavision Primo lenses.
People think rokies are not good. But there really good lenses not even for the price...there just good lenses period. People think the more expensive lens equals better nope. Not anymore. Technology has advanced so much that a $300 cine lense is better than a vintage lense with tons CA. 😉
Thanks for watching! I agree. It's a great time to be a filmmaker. So many options of great lenses...Not sure a great time to be a rental house tho lol
Thought it was definitely interesting how fairly similar the lenses were considering the price. I noticed the Rokinons had more or a yellow or green tint to them, but they definitely out performed the Cookes when it came to Bokeh
Yeah I was surprised how similar they were too. I still prefer the look of the Cooke overall, but you can get pretty darn close for a lot less! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for the video! It's really interesting to see that the Rokinon hold well against the Cooke S4| I really like the overall look of the Rokinon lenses, but I can't digest the magenta tint in the shadows and the build quality...I'm waiting for my 24mm T1.5 to break completely before I'll replace it (probably in a couple of years ahahah!). It's better to buy some solid vintage lenses for the long run...I'm loving the Contax Zeiss and Leica R lenses :)
Thanks for watching! Yes I was surprised how well the Rokinon held up too. I agree the vintage lenses are a really good way to go. I’m trying to find a few of the Leica R lenses myself like you mentioned. They are such great lenses for the money. Love the Leica look!
@@FilmJams I hear it's not much change image-wise, but not sure! There's a different lens coating, as well as more iris blades. Using them I've found they do have magenta, but only when flaring. Build quality is quite nice, very rugged, was running around in the woods with them.
@@divisionoflabor3070 nice I like that they keep improving their lenses. Some companies just release one version and don’t update. Rokinon seems to always be trying at least.
A: Rokinon B: Cooke Why: The skin tones in A have more greenish tint in the deep dark areas which I typically associate with Rokinon Glass, but I could be wrong as the Cooke looks to have a lot of green CA on the edge of it's bokeh balls, which is not what I typically think of as an attribute of Cooke glass.
Bill you got it! Good eye. The greenish tint is for sure on the Rokinon. I was a little surprised about the Cooke as well with the CA, but it does improve stopping down a bit.
Interesting! I think they definitely hold up in some tests. But a lot is personal preference. The crazy thing I thought is how close they are considering the huge price difference.
@@FilmJams For me it wasn't even close. The budget lens looked sharper and had virtually zero lens flare. The Cooke had too much lens flare and the lightbulbs in the background had purple fringing which the Rokinon didn't have. Also the skin tone was warmer with the Rokinon which is more cinematic and color accurate.
First test. I say lens A is the Cooke... And I'm wrong. Haha. Ah the out of focus test is where the difference is clear. That Rokinon out of focus face looks nasty. Great tests! Thank you.
Thanks for playing! Yes A is actually Rokinon haha! I agree the bokeh on the Cooke is very nice. Appreciate you watching and stopping by the channel :D
Super cool video! Damn I like the Rokinon! Just bought the Samyang 12mmf2 for my astrophoto stuff. Love their brand! Any other kind of nice budget lenses besides Rokinon/Samyang? Shooting with an A6400, having the Sigma 16mmf2 and the kit lense. But a cine lense is a must for cinema stuff you'd say? I'm mostly shooting golden hour and late city nights like 80s music videos. That's my plan! Sigma should be fine but if cine lenses would make that little extra I'd love to hear! Oh yeah, this is def a sub ;) (ps, actually loved the lense and picture from The Clapper. Haven't found that info yet. But my fav ones are David Lynch stuff like Mulholland Drive and ofc Drive
80’s music videos! That’s awesome. Big fan of 80’s cinema myself! Thanks for the sub. Really appreciate it. As far as cinema lenses some are definitely worth it. If you’re shooting on the A6400, and want some interesting cinema lenses try the Sirui anamorphic 50mm. It’s a really fun lens if you’re looking for that cinematic look. You could also go for some canon CN-E primes, or vintage canon FD which cost a bit more and need EF adapter for Sony but really nice lenses as well. We have a video comparing the CN-E to the Rokinons too. You could also go with Leica R lenses, but again you’d have to adapt them to EF mount. Also Really nice. Anyway, good luck!
@@FilmJams Hey broski ofc! I know the struggle of building up a youtubechannel but good info gets def a sub! Love your personality btw everything is really nice! Thank you So much for such a fast reply and good info thanks a bunch! The Sirui looks dope, fairly ok price - gonna check if the Roki cine ones are good too, feels a lil cheaper. So they would be better in handling lense flares, lights and just make it look more "cinematic" (dunno why) but it would be cool to u nderstand! My Sigma 16mmf1.4 is really sharp, looks dope and amazing in low light. But would a cine lens make it like 50 or more 100% more "music video" cinematic feel and look? All the best!!!
Thanks again! Really appreciate that. It is a struggle haha! I think if you go for a cinema lens it’s not necessarily a huge change in the look - they tend to be a bit sharper and have better mechanics for pulling focus. Older vintage lenses like Leica R will flare really nicely more than most modern cinema lenses. Now Anamorphic lenses will have a bigger difference in the look. You get the vertical bokeh, the compression, etc. I think if you want a more cinematic feel, go for the Anamorphic! And lighting. Invest in good lighting. People like the LED tubes lights like Quasars for music videos and also I like using directional lights to flare the lens. Like a Source Four Leko.
I'm sorry but how much do you hate your ac? When you're on a paid job, reliability matters alot, not just for you but for literally anyone else on set.
With the 50mm, I thought the Rokinon looked like garbage. The flattening/compression of the face made the talent look like a tombstone as where the Cooke had way more dimensionality to them. Also, the Rokinons always have a cast of piss color on them.
Thanks for watching! Always interesting to see the side-by-sides and what people take away from it - that’s why we like doing these tests. Sounds like you won’t be filming on Rokinons any time soon!
Rent the 35 mm Cooke. The 35 mm Cooke has 3D, the Rokinon is very poor here. Buy the 50 mm Rokinon (if def is not a priority). Or just forget about the Rokinon darkness, go for a better cine mode 50 mm vintage, like a Topcor, a lens with absolute neutrality & superior light gradation. Well, then it gets complicated : it's a 58 mm 1.8, workable at T3 !... or get the king, the Topcor 58 mm 1.4 for some work at T2. Or the now famous re edition of that 70's lens, the Voigtländer Nokton 58mm f/1,4 SL II-S.
You’ve eyes are broken. You are blind because of the Name and staggering price of the Cooke opposed to its performance. The differences can be matched in resolve. I would never hire you for a production purely off of what you said
@@JitDawgBruhDang This comment is retarded. Like, okay, maybe if you also are the colorist on your show and YOU are personally okay with color correcting each and every shot before doing the actual color grading (because unlike proper cine lenses the rokinons are not consistent between lenses so it's not as easy as matching one shot), but guess what? Your colorist probably won't and it'll be another case where you can't just swallow your pride and rent like the rest of us for the sake of the workflow of your crew.
@@zebius4157 The rokinons color and characteristics (even on the cheaper ones) are similar. You don’t need to match every single shot after swapping lense. I’ve used Cooke’s owned Xeens, cheap rokinons, anamorphic and brands usually match between their lines and focal lengths. I’ve been in the game for 4 years. I know what I’m talking about. You don’t… The value isn’t there, and you based your argument on matching when $300 lenses cover that
Thanks for watching! The Cooke’s don’t have super crazy flares but they do have a nice flare in the sun - which isn’t in this test unfortunately- but yeah for the money Rokinon drives a hard bargain!
@@alejandrocampollo I can understand that. Like I said when I have the choice I normally choose the Altas Orion’s. The Cooke’s are a bit smaller though which I like, and they are much sharper. But the Orion’s just look cinematic straight out of the box. Did you see our video where we compared the Atlas to the Cooke’s? Here’s a link: th-cam.com/video/Zyxui7iCtpU/w-d-xo.html
Sorry you felt that way! I love comparing different lenses to see how they perform. Also when a client asks why they’re paying more for a $20,000 lens versus a $300 lens I can give specific notes on the differences. I can understand it might not be helpful to everyone, but we did have a ton of people who messaged us and said it was helpful. We try to make a variety of content for different groups. Maybe we’ll grab you on the next one! 😆🤘
what logic? A Toyota is far better in many ways than an F car. i enjoyed the video If we are looking at lens glass, coatings and image only, then each test is interesting. For sure an expert can tell an Arri prime lens image from a cheap lens in many images difficult to light etc. But for the average Joe lost in a story on a 2K TV or home DVD or netflix stream....a low priced lens will do the job. Proper lighting and a smart edit in post will improve many image issues. AS FOR BUILD QUALITY - IN A CINE LENS OR REHOUSED STILL LENS - The price goes up by $1000 or more. on a budget and not quite sure? For learning, and experimenting i would get cheap primes and zooms and see what works best .. then replace with better quality lenses once you determine what you REALLY NEED IN LENSES.

I dunno... the Rokinons are 'nice' but for me, just too sharp and digital.
I can’t believe how similar the rokinons look to the Cooke. Excited for the atlas video next week!
Yeah pretty interesting seeing them side-by-side. Oh yesss the Atlas video is gonna be a good one! I can feel it. 😆🎥💥
@@FilmJams Loading up Sorceror's Stone to watch right now and then next will be Prisoner of Azkaban.... it's gonna be a Harry Potter weekend !!!!!
KP media nice! That actually sounds like a great idea. I may have to do the same! 😆🤘 enjoy!
Compare a cooke lens vs a cheap cctv 25mm
Is that the $25 one? That would make an interesting video. 😆
It's really interesting to see that the Rokinon hold well against the Cooke S4|
I really like the overall look of the Rokinon lenses, but I can't digest the magenta tint in the shadows and the build quality...I'm waiting for my 24mm T1.5 to break completely before I'll replace it (probably in a couple of years ahahah!).
Cine DSX just came out, metal housing, weather sealed, new coating
@@divisionoflabor3070 yeah will like to try those out to see how much better they are.
A: Rokinon
B: Cooke
Why: The skin tones in A have more greenish tint in the deep dark areas which I typically associate with Rokinon Glass, but I could be wrong as the Cooke looks to have a lot of green CA on the edge of it's bokeh balls, which is not what I typically think of as an attribute of Cooke glass.
This is some good deductive reasoning! I'll post the answer tomorrow! :D
Bill you got it! Good eye. The greenish tint is for sure on the Rokinon. I was a little surprised about the Cooke as well with the CA, but it does improve stopping down a bit.
Is it just me or was the Rokinon lens waaaaay better quality in every test?
Interesting! I think they definitely hold up in some tests. But a lot is personal preference. The crazy thing I thought is how close they are considering the huge price difference.
@@FilmJams For me it wasn't even close. The budget lens looked sharper and had virtually zero lens flare. The Cooke had too much lens flare and the lightbulbs in the background had purple fringing which the Rokinon didn't have. Also the skin tone was warmer with the Rokinon which is more cinematic and color accurate.
The lens flare on the Cooke lens was very apparent in the panning test.
Hey one man’s trash is another man’s treasure haha! No but if you like the Cooke’s better then you can save yourself a whole lotta cash!
See I love those flares. But if you don’t like flares I can see that.
Sorry for those of you who got Cooked. I'm rockin the Rokies!
Haha! Nice!
Cooke is creamy while rokinon makes skin look weird green also roll off isnt great.
The Cooke Look is hard to beat! Thanks for watching!
Longevity and plastic build are weak arguments to justify $20,000. Buy three of each rokinon lens for backup, problem solved 👊🏽
If you like the Roke that's not a bad way to go! Thanks for watching! :D
Sounds like you won’t be filming on Rokinons any time soon!
more rokinon videos! push back against snobs
Haha! Sounds good! We’ll keep em coming 😆🤘🎥
@@FilmJams Thanks! Maybe try the Cine DSX. Has a new design
@@FilmJams There's also the Dzofilm and Meike you could compare them to
Yes! These would make good vids!
Cooke's cooke's cooke's 🔥🔥🔥
Ohhh yeahhhh! Such great glass.
I’m question if one of my kidneys might be worth $20k to get a cinema lens. Any suggestions on how I can get the most for a kidney? 😝
Keep your Kidneys but sell the Spleen. Spleens are hot this season!
Should comp[are meike to Cooke
Much better construction then rokinon and similar price
Would love to! I’m hoping they could send us one for review.
Thanks for watching and commenting Vivian!
Cooke lens is far better than rokinon.. rokinon lens isnt catching the accurate skin tone and Cooke lens is catching the accurate skin tone..
Yes definitely. That’s one of the major differences. Those Cooke skin tones are just very nice. Thanks for watching!
You’ve eyes are broken. You are blind because of the Name and staggering price of the Cooke opposed to its performance. The differences can be matched in resolve. I would never hire you for a production purely off of what you said
@@JitDawgBruhDang #FACTS ^^^^^
You don’t… The value isn’t there, and you based your argument on matching when $300 lenses cover that
Ya the Rokinons were great, but the flares on the Cooke was disappointing
Thanks for watching! The Cooke’s don’t have super crazy flares but they do have a nice flare in the sun - which isn’t in this test unfortunately- but yeah for the money Rokinon drives a hard bargain!
jesus would never get the cooke..
I see the orion lenses they look so amazing, I think I would only invest that much money on those,
What didn’t you like about the Cooke ? We have both and most projects I prefer the Orion’s. But the Cooke’s look great too for certain projects.
@@FilmJams the price compared to the difference idk,
I love the look of orions, i think i would invest that much on orions but not on cook
@@FilmJams yes! i watched, it thank you for making these tests!
love that atlas isn't as sharp it gives a lot of good texture I feel
@@alejandrocampollo you’re welcome! Glad they’re helpful 😆👍 yes the softer look of Atlas does have a nice cinematic feel.
This is crazy
Right?! Thanks for watching !
Nice. Since we’re bored, let’s compare a Ferrari to a Toyota Camry while we’re at it. C’mon man, love the channel but this comparison was pointless.
what logic? A Toyota is far better in many ways than an F car. i enjoyed the video
If we are looking at lens glass, coatings and image only, then each test is interesting.
Well said! Thanks for stopping by the channel!
