    I’d definitely use the atlas on my next project but that rainbow flare on the cookes is incredible

    Heard you're doing a DZO Pictor comparison :) Just bought the set recently, excited to get them and see how they stack up against the competition. Looking forward to the new vid!

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! We already shot it! 😆 It will be coming out next Friday (10/2/20)! We compared the DZO to the Angenieux Optimo 16-42mm and the Sigma 18-35mm. I think it’s going to be pretty interesting to see them side-by-side. The DZO was really impressive for the price. I think they’re going to be very popular lenses. Let us know how you like yours when you get them!

    Love it. My personal preference would be towards the Cookes set but I’d like to see more examples of the Atlas in play.

      Thanks! A Cooke man after my own heart! That’s a good way to go and probably the more versatile of the two. We’ve got more Atlas videos on our playlist here: th-cam.com/play/PLMX4BQsnjAt8h2xd8MhcJkkSq6tXTkf5L.html

    The Atlas lenses are designed to be 'characterful' (i.e. compromised) at T2 and T2.8 so a more useful comparison with any spherical would be at T4 and up. All anamorphics except the Arri/Zeiss Masters will behave like this.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can see what you mean, but we did this test as we plan to shoot a film at T2 so we needed to see how they performed at that T-stop. If you’re interested in seeing the Atlas compared at T4 we do have a video comparing them at T4 to the Vazen anamorphics. Here’s a link to that: th-cam.com/video/b1ADGFDtc_A/w-d-xo.html

  • @bobansky
    @bobansky 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey guys, I wish you you did a test on t 4 or t5 to see how Atlas behaves. I read that they are a bit soft wide open(as we can see here), but super sharp around t4??

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We have done a few other videos at T2.8 / T4 split which is my favorite spot to film them at tho I have been shooting them wide open more lately. I wouldn’t say they’re super sharp at T4 but they do sharpen up a bit. Check out this video we shot at T2.8 / T4 with them - th-cam.com/video/CSbi-AMRM8g/w-d-xo.html

    Interesting comparison. Booth set of lenses are amazing and it’s always about the look you want to use with lenses like that. Atlas are super cinematic because they’re anamorphic but the cooks are super sharp and and still have a cinematic feel to it, I mean they’re cooks for a reason 👌🏻

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Sean! I agree. It’s a tough choice. Both very cinematic. If you want to commit to the blue flares I think the Atlas, but if you’re going for a cleaner look, the Cooke’s are probably my choice. But everything shot on the Atlas looks so good!

    Love these kind of tests, but... why not test the Atlas against the Cooke 32 Anamorphic? I saw very interesting differences in the details when testing out these lenses. Wish I would’ve documented. Thanks for doing this, in any case.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Travis! Yeah we happened to have these two sets of lenses in house and wanted to see how they compared. But I definitely would like to do a test of the Cooke Anamorphics and the Atlas. Planning that for a future episode!

    I couldn't see perspective or compression of 100mm with anamorphic maybe because Cooks are showing thiner faces ?

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm yeah not sure. It looks a bit more compressed but maybe not as much as the 65mm Atlas to the 32mm Cooke. I notice it most on the Breathing test as the subject becomes much more separated when we focus on the background.

    I would agree with Deakins when it comes to anamorphic. The artist in me loves anamorphic, but 98% of viewers I have found dislike the flares and distortions. It distracts them from the story often. We must never let our brush get in the way of the story, for it truly is what our viewers care about. Us creatives are in the 2% regarding camera and lens choice. As of 2022, the trend is anamorphic, which lends me even more to use my S4's. *I want to emphasize again that I love vintage glass and anamorphic. Very much so. But something is to be said about simplicity.

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Z! Thanks for the comment. Very true. Flares can be distracting if not done purposefully. For feature films I tend towards spherical, but when I’m doing music videos or short films I like to experiment more with lenses that can flare and have more distortion. The S4’s are a classic and will never go out of style. Enjoy them. And thanks for stopping by the channel!

    I came back to watch this one more time ............. after concluding my Harry Potter dvd weekend, i noticed that the colorists saturated their final "look" a fair amount on the clothing, so it was really hard to get an opinion on the Cooke S4's just from watching the Harry Potter movies that the Cookes were used on.... I did notice that ALL of the Potters, including the one shot on Panavision Primo looked like "another world" versus looking like it was shot on a regular camera and lens that the average youtuber would have, which was due in large part to the "dream team" doing the color work, no doubt !

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nice! How was the Harry Potter session? Yeah I can see that! All the fancy set design, lighting and coloring does put them in a whole other level! Us mere mortals can only dream! 😆

      I like to shoot both these lenses at T/2 that’s why we tested them there. But I can see how a T2.8 or T4 test would be useful as well. 😀👍

      Film Jams f2 is not used much within anamorphic cinema but it would have been great to see the comparison starting at f2.8-f4, appreciate the wide open test anyways but these anamorphic lenses usually starting singing at 2.8:)

    • @FilmJams
      @FilmJams  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hans Peter Schepp right on! Yes I typically do shoot the Orion’s at 2.8/4 split but I wanted to see how they performed wide open for this test. If you want to see how they perform with 2.8/4 split, we did this video with them shot at those settings: th-cam.com/video/CSbi-AMRM8g/w-d-xo.html

      @@hanspeterschepp Cooke S4 - Winner with 1000000% margin. Also, any spherical lens will win over any anamorphic lens in terms of sharpness, contrast picture quality. Nowadays anamorphic lens is pointless at all (except really artistic aim of using it) , flares, some other anamorphic effect, etc easy to replicate with modern editing software. I don't understand modern isteria about anamorphic. Actually, that flares is negative artefact of anamorphic lenses and all DP tried to avoid these flares in past, now ppl try to replicate it again .... so strange...

    • @hanspeterschepp
      @hanspeterschepp 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nicke.3536 sure thing, to me anamorphic lenses have their own uniqueness but I agree flaring is not something you would like to see to much especially since our eye doesn’t perceive this naturally either, but the characteristics of anamorphic is being less perfect bending everything does make it interesting in a way, also to get close to our field of view of the human eye.
