    Thank you for the test! But I wonder 1) how about breathing when changing focus, 2) how are the flares? 3) how do they behave when closed at T16, for example?

    Thanks for this comparison! I'm nowhere near the point of springing for Canon lenses at this point, but it sure helps me to see that the Rokinon holds its own, especially for the more gritty industrial work that I'm doing.

    Thanks for the comparison, however we know that the big difference between a good and expensive lens and a cheap one is in the breath, in fact especially on the 35mm the Rokinon is a 35mm with infinity focus, but at the minimum focus distance it becomes a 40 / 45mm, changes angle of view as focus distance changes
    For greater precision there are also no tests for backlight flare
    In any case, Rokinon lenses are a good compromise between quality and cost, as well as using vintage lenses such as nikon ai-s or Leica R, Minolta MD etc ..

    My thought process was ..... get the Rokinon kit, if one breaks that means it's probably been used more than the other lenses and it's time to upgrade to a sturdier build. It's a great way to figure out your shooting style and the clients expectations with respect to that style.

      Good idea. The Rokinon's definitely let you practice prime lens shooting with wide apertures, without having to break the bank. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

    Suprised the Rokinon 85mm has no color refraction (Or very little) the Canon you see a ton of Color Refraction in the Bokeh on it. I would chose the Rokinon in 85mm over the Canon personally based on this, but I'm sure there's better focus pulling, and aperture adjustments on the Canon lens.

      @@DeafDirector If you have a minute can I get your opinion? Do you think it would be smarter to get a set of 4 Rokinon Cine Primes or just one Canon RF lens (probably the 50 1.2L) ? Are the RF's really that much better to justify the price difference? I have a C70 and a R5, my business is both photo and video but these days the majority is video. I've been saving for some RF lenses but I already have most of the equivalent L series EF lenses for photography so I'm thinking it may be smarter to get a cine lens. . . unless the RF's are really that much better?

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@davinphelps1863 That's a tough call. I think it really depends on where you see using the lens for, because they have such vastly different personalities. The benefit of the RF is that it is a fantastic lens, that can utilize the autofocus of both the C70 and R5, which could be really important if you don't have a focus puller. I also think from a long term investment, it is obvious that Canon is all in on the RF mounts, and now you're seeing other companies (like the RED Komodo) adopt it, so that means any RF lenses you get will probably still be in your bag for over a decade or so. Speaking of long term investment, the Canon AF systems will only continue to improve with future cameras, so the RF 50 will be future proof, and still work great on new Canon cameras coming out years from now.
      The Rokinon lenses are great if you are shooting stuff that you feel requires a creamier, softer feel. They have a very distinct visual personality. Just remember, they are manual focus, and not nearly as physically robust as the RF.
      I really like using my Rokinon's on certain projects, but they are much more specialized and less versatile than my Canon glass. For instance, I never use my Rokinon's on photo shoots (only video), but the RF you could use for both.
      It's a tough choice, because they are so different. Good luck on the decision and have a great day!

    Hi, great video! One question, I can only find the Rokinon 14mm lens with T3.1, not T1.5. Is the T1.5 a typo at 2:54 in the video?

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Arkayn, Gaming, it is totally a typo, I missed that one before I published, so sorry. The 14mm does have a "non-cine" version that is missing the grooved rings that comes in at 2.8. This is actually the 14 I use, because the lens is so wide I often find that focus is not a problem (so I don't need the focus rings anyway) and I like getting that extra half stop of light. I'll put a link to it at the bottom of this reply, in case you want to look into it. Thanks so much for the comment. bhpho.to/3iqh0PE

    Thanks for your very informative video. What I see is 1) the Rokinon has onion rings in the boke. 2) The Rokinon has better corner sharpness. 3) the Rokinon has less chromatic aberrations. 4) The canon has the edge on cleaner contrast. As far as I am concerned it's a no brainer, the Rokinon is the winner regardless of price. SO!!!!.... save the money and put it into more equipment or an upgrade in camera.

  • @davidp158
    @davidp158 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    As you demonstrate in this video, the cheap Rokinon lenses hold up better than most people would have you believe. I agree with other commenters that the test should include focus breathing and flaring, but also understand that not everyone does rack focusing, nor shoot without a matte box to combat flares. One hallmark of the more expensive cine lenses is durability and consistency of color and contrast. Rokinons deviate in color and contrast, and their plastic build won't stand the test of time if abused.
    Lenses to cinematographers are much like microphones are to recording engineers. They all have inherent characteristics that are subjective, yet can be employed for creative effect.
    As someone who works on many low budget projects that don't have a budget to rent "proper" cinema lenses, I invested in a full set of Rokinon lenses. To date, no one has every complained, much less noticed, that I'm not using Cooke or Zeiss or....insert name of expensive glass. Sure, I'd love to work with better lenses, but until then the Rokinons have served me well. That said, I am saving up for a set of DZOfilm Vespid primes, as they are a more durable build, and have a character I prefer over the Rokinons.
    We live in a great time to invest in affordable filmmaking gear. Life is pretty dang good.

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have to admit, even though they are not as robust or technically perfect as some of the other cinema lenses I get to shoot with, I often find myself loving the character that my Rokinon's bring to a shot. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!

    Video lens review in a non video environment. Focal breathing is far far more important on the cine lens than microscopical pixel peeping of the lens. Ghosting and flare control even more important. Nothing is covered what’s important for a filmmaker.

    Hello Bryan, I really enjoyed your channel. looking forward to more videos. So if you are just an amateur photographer then good way to start is to buy Rokinon. I am Looking to invest in a camera iI have always used Sony and confused between Sony FX6 vs canon C200. Any advise will be appreciated.

    • @DeafDirector
      @DeafDirector  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Sohail, welcome to the Channel and great to hear from you! I would say that the Rokinon lenses should really be considered more for video work than for photography, just because they are fully manual focus, which is great for video, but you might want autofocus on a photo lens. As far as choosing between a Sony FX6 or a c200, if you are a long time Sony user then you would probably be better off with the FX6. The camera and specs are more up to speed with the rest of the industry (the c200 is a little old at this point) and since you have a background in Sony you may be more comfortable with the system you already know. If you really love Canon, I would consider researching the Canon C70, it has better updated specs than the C200 and it costs almost the same as the FX6. Thanks for the comment and good luck!

      Hey Bernardo, unfortunately, because I most commonly use with EF, RF and PL mount cameras it has not made financial sense for me to invest in any MFT lenses. I wonder why there are so many comments saying this video ist great? 1. All “cinema” T1.5 primes under 10 grand are rehoused photolenses. That’s a fact. (XEENs = Samyang, CN-E = L Series, Sigma Cine = Art Series) The Canons are starting to show their age as they are just the L Series Primes in a stupidly big housing (by todays standard). The PL mount is another selling argument. Canon ignored the mass of customers asking for a proper Cinema Mount (NO, EF is not a proper Cinema Mount, especially those without a tightening ring) 2. Pixelpeeping seems to be a photographer thing to do. When we preped shoots at panavision I’ve never seen a DP pixel peep. What matters is the feel, color reproduction (although can be corrected in post) and breathing characteristics. 3. The comparison is just pointless. A better one would have been XEENs vs CN-Es or Rokinon vs Canon L series. The optics comparison is just comparing photolenses, NOT cinema lenses.

It’s like comparing a $4k Neumann U87 to a $300 MXL mic. With that much of a leap it’s obvious that there’s gonna be an insane difference. You get what you pay for. With that price gap.

It's a qualified comparison, which means that it's not relative to "within lenses" but to actual dirt. I'm not a native English speaker, so I'd have a justification, you don't.
