    Absolute perfection. Finally, someone who understands that you can't compare two completely separate images with separate lenses and call it a "Test". You're footage was great, and the presentation was fantastic. Not too much commentary, and what was there was actually meaningful. YOU HAVE MY SUB good sir!!!

    I prefer the Xeen's color. Other than that, the difference seems pretty negligible. Let's sell a Xeen shell/case that fits over the Rokinon so you look cool without spending the $. LOL.

    • @snazzy

      Also, I love that Rokinon lens. It's my main squeeze.

    • @PiDsPagePrototypes

      +Snazzy Labs The Xeen IS a shell over the Rokinon glass, with a different focus mechanism and slightly different coatings.
      And yeah, I love the Rokinon/Samyang 24mm too.

      Mac Ruiz - it was according to the press & publicity releases - Same Glass, better coatings with less flaring, and a 'Cine' housing that give less Focus Breathing.
      Regardless, they're pretty good products at their price range.

      I don't think he white balanced each time he switched the lens which is probably why the Rokinon looked bluer.

  • @MSTechCentral

    This was extremely fascinating. I had Xeen as Lens A because of the first clip, but when you pulled focus with the fire I was expecting a way bigger difference in bokeh. Interesting. Thanks for the video!

      same. bokeh was pretty much identical

      with the fire look at the focus breathing

    • @njrivetelite
      @njrivetelite 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes this.. this is what I noticed as well.. if you owned the rokinon you'd have to mark off on your focus wheel to minimize breathing..

    • @codyjones3720
      @codyjones3720 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With the lens wide open and the internal glass being the same, save the coatings, you won't seen any difference in the bokeh unless stopped down.

  • @DrShaym
    @DrShaym 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

    The Xeen looks better, but by such a slim margin that it doesn't justify such a huge difference in price. You could buy a four-lens Rokinon bundle for less than the price of that one Xeen, and I think getting those different focal lengths would be a better way to spend your money.

  • @DiegoMarqz
    @DiegoMarqz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +72

    1 thing that is CRUCIAL for a cine lens: FOCUS BREATHE: on the fire take you can clearly see the rokinon changing the focus range with racking, the image gets bigger...the XEEN the image keeps STILL, frozen, only defocusing, this is the major goal for a cine lens IMO.
    If possible, do more rack focus shots so we can see this effect better.

    • @vaesibility
      @vaesibility 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree, but breathing is also an aesthetic choice for cine lenses IMO. I'd prefer lenses that has slightly more breathing if I were to shoot an action film because the racking gives sort of a cool effect! :)

    • @brandongold
      @brandongold 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly! He was using a pair of 24mm lenses, so the focus breathe wasn't that much actually. If he tried with some 85mm or even longer lens, the difference would be HUGE. A still photo lens would be simply unusable in some cases in that focus lenth.

    • @likebliss
      @likebliss 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they both had some breathing tho

    • @spete7
      @spete7 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is probably the biggest differences aside from the slight differences in IQ and colour rendering that sets the Xeens apart from the rokinon lenses. The rokinons are essentially just stills lenses with focus gears and a click less aperture ring.

    • @theCFXchannel
      @theCFXchannel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Canon CN-E lenses (that are double the price of the Xeen’s) DO have focus breathing though. So it’s not really a price thing and just comes down to personal taste

  • @chungdha
    @chungdha ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Xeen is better, the out of focus area is very noticeable difference as the Samyang or Rokinon is more fuzzy blurred which doesn't looks that nice and Xeen blurred more naturally.

    Xeen is definitely the way to go if you are an indie filmmaker. Much cheaper than a Cooke S4, but truly holds up to it. I enjoyed this test. It really showcased how much of an organic, more natural, look you can get out of Xeen versus the Rokinon. I plan on getting a set of Xeen, now.

    Excellent video. I own several of the Rokinon Cine DS lenses and find them to be exceptional for the money. For someone getting their feet wet with cine lenses, they're a great way to get used to working in T-stops and pulling focus. I love the way you presented these. Thanks!

  • @alexshdvideo
    @alexshdvideo 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Xeen looked better to me on virtually every shot, though half the time I was judging by the color rendition. With out a doubt, short term or if you have to ask what is the difference for the money get the Rokinon. If you making big money on bigger projects then get the Xeen. When I used a Panaflex we used $20,000 to $50,000 for each lens.. (had to rent them even on a big project that I was a small part of) but that was a $180,000,000 film for instance. So it's all relative. But the 2 Rokinons I have at home are pretty darned good for about what a used Nikon/Canon old MF cost on Ebay, and so much easier to use on DSLR or modern digital cine than a Nikon/Canon AF lens.

      @oscarbirkhellenes9724 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ive used a kit of 4 different Rokinon cine lenses for a few years. I only have 2 of them left. They break pretty quickly, so if youre looking for a lens that lasts a lifetime, I would look elsewhere.

    • @thedp
      @thedp 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ya and the worst part is no replacement parts to fix something like a broken lens mount, but everything else is ok. not the most durable glass around, but even still a nice value for some one who is careful with their gear. not rental house material, thats for sure.

    • @SAndSPictures
      @SAndSPictures 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I own two of them. They're plastic, but it's a nice plastic. I wouldn't trust it after a drop though.

    • @rc-wingman5719
      @rc-wingman5719 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      or dont drop them in general. But that seams to be impossible if you are working 25/7 on film projects...

    • @MarcosElMalo2
      @MarcosElMalo2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      S&S Pictures - Scott Sullivan Duclos did a take apart of a cine ds and some of the screw mounts were plastic that can strip or break completely in a drop. There were a few other things that mark the cine ds as a cheap(er) lens construction-wise.
      I’m doing some long term planning for assembling a kit a few years down the road, so I’m relearning and familiarizing myself with all these new products. The Cine DS primes look “good enough” for me if I was putting something together for purchase right now, but the Xeens look pretty sweet. Its an exciting time to get back into filmmaking.

  • @monster410
    @monster410 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The Xeen looks better but because it is compared side by side with the Rokinon one. Otherwise if I watched a video entirely shoot with the Rokinon lens I think i wouldn't notice anything at all as it looks already pretty good. There is also a magenta cast on the Rokinon lens but I believe it can be corrected easily in post production.
    With lenses there is a point where a slightly better improvement will cost a lot.
    And Armando good job for doing a video comparison that goes straight to the point. Nothing worse than a 10/15min video with a guy talking about how beautiful and amazing the lens is... without any actual footage of the lens. So thanks for your job !

  • @ChristopherDobey
    @ChristopherDobey 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I appreciate the review. The Rokinon appeared too have quite an aggressive magenta/cooler tint to it. A neutral grey card in a controlled LED lit scene would be very helpful to compare the tint of the two. Thank you.

  • @ehbood
    @ehbood 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great comparison but the question isn't 'Which lens you'd use?'. The thing is, they each have their place in the creation of moving pictures. If your project is shooting for a very high quality image which requires greater accuracy and (frankly) will pay at a higher rate, one would use the Xeen. If the project is more Run'n'Gun, lower budget and not needing to be so perfect, then the Cine DSX is the way to go. This video is a great illustration of what needs to be done to closely approximate the look of the Xeen with the DSX.
    Good Job Gents!

  • @GeryTeague

    It's interesting. I would say your comparison between using a toyota and a lexus is a great example. You could blindfold someone and put them in both cars and ask them to tell you which was the Lexus and people are going to have a tough time telling. Unless you do one of two things. 1: let them feel the quality difference by touching the materials in the vehicle or 2: put the car under some more extreme circumstances... acceleration, handling, breaking, amenities, squeaks, rattles, etc.
    So, with these lenses we did pretty moderate tests. I feel like the bokeh was a good test, but I would have liked to have seen some tests showing: how they handle flaring, lens breathing, ability to handle a quick focus pull, long focus pull, shadow gradation, what it's like to swap them out of a rail system with other components attached, etc.
    I've seen videos before where they've taken dp's and hand them compare shots taken with different lenses and they couldn't tell the difference between the $100 lens and the $25,000 lens. But the dp's argued that the lenses weren't put under stressful situations where the merits of having a more expensive lens come into play.
    Love your video, thanks for making it!

    like? LOVE? thank you so much for doing this! I just purchased the 24 and 50mm XEEN PL mount. to full out my Zeiss Superspeed and CP2 set. (been using those since 1993!!) I now shoot on a Sony F55 with those lenses.
    Your comparison is EXACTLY what every lens review should be. Real images and side by side comparisons. Not brick walls and charts.
    BTW...The Rokinon's have impressed my clients for years for my DSLR work. Along with other Zeiss lenses they hold up quite well visually. The aperture control did break after a few years of shipping cases and location shoots. The visual quality really is ALMOST as good as it gets. Especially for a few hundred bucks. THANK YOU AGAIN!!! Best ever comparison.

    Isn't the whole point of these expensive cinema lenses to be easier and more enjoyable to use, especially in a professional setting? Like, I'm sure the Xeen has a way larger focus throw, and other things are just easier to work with. But at the same time it is really quite impressive how well the rokinon holds up.

      Woodepic Media the cine (non xeen) versions of rokinon/samyang lenses have a huge focus range and declicked aperture compared to the photo version. I got the 14mm for under 300$ Canadian so they're unbelievable values. You can get f1.4 lenses for around $300 at 50mm, 35, 85, 135, etc.

    I bought a couple Rokinon lenses back in 2015 and I do love them but they are definitely soft when used with more modern 4k cameras. The real problem, however, is the focus breathing. Have to either work around that by not doing drastic focus changes while shooting, or just dealing with it.

  • @50450720

    Your correct when you say TH-cam will crush the differences.
    Also, when you buy a Xeen, your buying it to use it wide open in 4k or 6k where the difference is really noticeable.
    If your doing paid work, your client will be sooo impressed when you rock up with the Xeen lens.
    Bit it’s worth mentioning that the Xeen has a 114mm front end and no filter thread, so you’ll need a pretty expensive mattebox and ND filter set. (I use polarpro’s basecamp Nd kit)

    I mean it was pretty easy to figure out which was which with the rokinons nasty color shift at T16 and boke vs the Xeen. But I would have expected the consistency form the Xeen based on price, features, build quality , etc… but it is always nice to be happily surprised when cheaper lenses hit well above their weight.

  • @JohnMWhite

    Nice comparison. Thanks for doing the A/B thing, as I think it shows a lot how it's nearly impossible to tell without know which is which. I'd only want the Xeen lenses for bigger crews and if I needed to impress the client. Unfortunately, impressing the client can be a factor (and the big rig always works).

  • @andyyolesen

    i purchased online the Rokinon 24mm, but when i got to the store to pick it up, i changed my mind and bought the XEEN, as it is the only pro cinema lens in my collection, and the most used at 24mm. So the store swapped out the cheaper lens and i went home with the XEEN, with a sense of great pride, hoping maybe it will inspire me to higher levels of film productions. The eleven blades vs the 8 blades was a selling feature, as well as the larger focus pull for more accurate focus and perhaps a more gentle pull accuracy at the stops. As for the higher weight, i use a Steadicam arm and vest, with the camera mounted on a gimbal, with the camera rig, battery, focus puller, matt box, lens and camera coming in at over 10lbs, a necessary must have for hours of filming. I am excited to try the new lens out, with an ability to handle 6K video and 13 stops of dynamic range, perhaps not much difference in the end user enjoyment, and rather greater performance ability of the photographer team.

    "Agreed, it does matter what your uses are and budget". Saying that, these results however shows that in today's film world it's certainly not necessarily to spend $100,000 USD for camera's, lenses, equipment, to produce the quality of a major motion picture.

      Richard James Milne: I agree and especially with awesome improvements in color grading software (i.e., Davinci Resolve 14), in which most of the discussion within this particular video is about color difference.

    Depends on the work definitely. If your doing professional level cinematic work where your getting paid then you really don't want to compromise if you can afford the xeen. Haven't seen the lenses personally but I'm quite sure the xeen lenses are going to be more consistent between lenses as well, which would save huge headaches on set and in post.

    I'm surprised with the shot of BB-8. If you look at the left side of his head, the bluish chromatic aberration, there seemed to be less of it with the Rokinon. But that could have been the result of the focuses being slightly different.

    I wanted to get your advice on filming,,I have the cannon 70-200mm,, the EF 16-35mm, Lumix 35-100mm, SLR Magic 8mm f/4.0 Ultra Wide Angle Lens and Xeen 24 mm rokinon so if you were shooting videos or a movie how would you use them?

  • @lorenzomorganjr.6585

    Aside from sharpness, with awesome improvements in color grading software (i.e., Davinci Resolve 14) the color difference in camera lenses can be adjusted.

    After using the rokinons extensively I would recommend the Xeen if only for the build quality. Rokinons are not made for professional work and my 35 mm is falling apart basically. Will be investing into the XEEN line next.

    It's crazy that this video is from 2016, but it's now viewable in 4k. That's why it pays to go the extra mile! Instead of settling for exporting & uploading videos in 1080p because that's all youtube allowed at the time. Now you get to reap the benefit of having your older videos enjoyed in all of their 4k glory!

      The Rokinon has a nice drop in clarity, and I feel is something good for black and white films, but the Xeen is much more organic. More true to the colors and whitebalance of the shot. This helps a ton, especially if you're dealing with harsh compression like most DSLR cameras.

    Hey Armando, you should consider getting a better/bigger 4k monitor. The differences between the lenses are glaring in pretty much all of your examples, both in color reproduction and sharpness. The Rokinon looked kind of soft in all of the examples, when compared to the Xeen lens. If you're not immediately seeing it, then you have a monitoring problem. That said, thank you for the comparison video. Those are very helpful!

    For the iPhone, pause the video at 1:57, hold shift+right arrow, you'll go to 2:02 (or you can do it manually)
    There you'll be easily able to see change in depth of the leaf
    Great video btw :D

    nice video. my take: choice of lens is dependant on the size of the screen, the production is intended for. case in point, Xeen would be the choice if the video is to be shown on a large home theater projection screen

    I love the way you compared them. The test is well done and accurate. I could personally tell which one is which from the very beginning. I love the color accuracy of the Xeen and I hate the chromatic aberrations that happen on the Rokinon. I shot a lot of things with Rokinon, and I like it, but I always noticed a lot of aberration and too much softness when wide open. I use Sigma photo lenses now, much sharper and accurate, but I hate that they can be too sharp in the areas of focus. The Xeen is definitely a nice set of lenses, and greatly priced for what they offer.

    I enjoyed your review and thought the information and testing was very well done. I own a set of DS lenses with an EF mount from 14mm to 135mm and have been quite satisfied with them. Besides cost and build quality there is one other difference which has me looking at buying a set of Xeen lenses, a PL mount. The Rokinons are not offered in PL mount.

    I love this kinda tests. It always shows me how much I'm bullshitting mylelf. I owned a set of Samyangs (Rokinon) and sold it and am now proceeding to buy the kit again, one lens at a time. If you're an indie filmmaker / youtuber with a modest budget I think the cheapest of these two are pretty much a no-brainer. The footage I got out of them is just amazing.

    Overall if money is not problem the Xeen looks more complete and the build quality its great.
    The "normal" version is the best option for the money.
    I'm curious if with the 85mm also happen the same or if its even a more closer match.
    Great review.

    Hi Armando, I wonder if you noticed that the Xeen has flickering, like a kind flicker of noise in the shot. Is that only on TH-cam? When I was looking at the test shots, I thought that A was Rokinon because of the noise and B was Xeen because it was flatter in color (which gives you more freedom when color grading) and because the noise was gone, so I thought better quality. Then you reveal that A is Xeen and B is Rokinon and I thought, well, I'm getting the Rokinon! Anyway, could you please tell me if you see the noise in the source files?

  • @davidp158
    @davidp158 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good review. As with many things, achieving a relatively small increase in quality often requires a substantial difference in cost. There is no doubt the Xeen are the better lens, but I am glad the DS line exists. The Xeen is a great rental kit option.

    What gave it away for me was the color, all the Rokinon shot had a kind of blueish cast that was kinda evident when you've just seen the correct one, the sharpness however was much harder to distinguish on a Full HD monitor.
