I just played an updated version on TTS. I think they took your feedback very seriously. 1. The small components are all gone 2. Bonus missions have been completely revamped 3. Combat card farming has been adjusted with a different rule set on how to earn combat cards. I would love to know your thoughts once the final version is published! It felt so much more polished now that it did when i tried it at Essen last October.
Hey dudes, I've been watching your old reviews and I just wanted to say that, out of all the board game review channels out there, I just think you're the best one going. I think the two scores you give do something really impressive; you can personally dislike a game but give enough of an objective overview that a watcher can decide if THEY would like the game themselves. I can't think of many channels that do this as well as you do, and that's why I'll always watch your reviews first if you've done one on a game I'm scouting out. Keep up the good work!
On first glance i thought this was a review of the official Rome: Total War board game... who are yet to release a single review, hence why i didnt back it, despite *loving* the video game (and many of the TW series). Good to see these guys had the guts to put a review up. It looks decent. As always, a great review. You're among the best in the business.
@ashton this is the third game that you reviewed for Cation Arts. They always make great games but one thing that annoys me are these little tokens. They drive me mad. I heard they removed them completely for ATW with the new reprint and extreme edition. I hope they do the same here in their first print run. Those food supply tokens look brutally small! I am playtesting Empire Rises this week. Very excited to do so. I played 3 rounds a few months ago and had a blast. It really does remind me of Total War. I definitely see this game reaching an 8 or 9 if they address some of your concerns, especially the bonus missions. These are legacy cards from final conquest; please @cationarts revamp them like you did for chronicle cards! I am definitely backing this btw, either way.
I know right, those tokens drive me up the wall!!! It must be their manufacturer agreement or something? I could see the game hitting an 8 with a lot of tweaks for sure! -Ashton
I played the base game and it definitely felt "familiar" but distinct. What's similar are the forts, food supply and heroes (though these are used differently in this game where they have to be purchased and are much more powerful), but i think the technology tree, worker placement, and chronicle cards are very distinct. I also love the fact that you can build forts on the map. This is a definite back for me once I am home in a few days
is the GOT board game worth playing/getting now days or is there a better alternative which seems to have replaced it? I found GOT on digital for free but have yet to invest and learn it, especially because i don't know how big the community is. Are there "better" games out now? in your opinion. I am looking for more area control/war/negation games.
@@naturesfinest2408 eh, I have it and it *never* hits the table. I believe the expansions change things up but the base game can take such a long time and requires a lot of players for the proper experience. Also, the last seasons of the show have soured many fans so it would probably be tough to find players. Oh, and the players have to be the right type. Like, they need to be willing to ally, work together, betray each other, etc. If not... well, let's say that you're playing a 4 player game with the base game. The one in Winterfell can basically end up stuck without progress, 2 in the middle of the map both may end up too paranoid about the other attacking them that neither really does much, and the last just scoops up the bottom of the board for the win before the others realize what's happening. At least, that's what happened the last time I played.
Im also a huge fan of rome total war, and the time period (rome having to fight multiple peer great power states and winning it all). Its a shame it doesnt look too interesting to play. Also cartage being weak in the water is weird. They had a very strong navy so if anything that should be their strongest trump, not the weakness of their special unit. I guess they really wanted that hannibal across the alps event to happen the game and engineered it to happen this way.
Heyo- Carthage isn't weak in the water, they actually have an advantage. It's just that their elephant elite unit is weak in the water. The Hannibal across the alps is probably more unlikely than not in games :) -Ashton
I don't think it is @mare nostrum. I don't see similarities beyond the theme. For GOT, i think what's similar are the forts, food supply and heroes, but i think the technology tree, worker placement, and chronicle cards are a very neat idea. I played the base game and it felt "familiar" but distinct. In a good way

Awesome, been waiting for this one
Cheeres! Hope this helped :D -Ashton
An interesting successor to Game of Thrones. I like it.
For real right! A lot less fiddly to play turn by turn, but the fighting phase is a lot more nuanced (and has dice!) -Ashton
Good and streamlined review. Thanks! 🙂
Cheers mate! -Ashton
Soo cool, i also played a lot of rome total war and conqueror seems like a good "fast" boardgame version
This reminds me of the game of thrones board game
It really has a LOT of similarities.
Exactly my thoughts

Thank you for bringing this game to my attention. How is it different from Rome Total War Boardgame?
Great question, I have never played the official board game so I cannot say ahaha. Hope to one day! -Ashton

From the playthrough i think Carthage get a bonus strength in sea battles
Thanks
Looks like a watered down Mare Nostrum or Game of Thrones.

Sounds like a GoT clone
