- A tutorial to video editing for beginners that primarily focuses on how to proxy edit.
What is proxy editing? Its using lower quality video whilst editing to ensure a lower spec PC can handle the process, and then rendering the final edit in high quality.

Shotcut: shotcut.com/do...
Lower resolution sizes for Handbrake:
1024 x 576
640 x 360

As of version 20.02 you can combine this with Settings > Preview Scaling to make the preview rendering resolution match the proxy resolution for faster, more fluid preview of filters and multitrack blending.
Great tutorial Alex!
Thanks
awesome mate!! love it. thanks very much 👍
Very clever way. Best and easiest way.
Absolutely Amazing,,you saved my life man,Thankyou❤️❤️
Well delivered tutorial, thanks.
Thank you very much😃
You should start the video with the opening of the Shotcut program.....that is more logical and less confusing ............
ô man, very thanks, love youuuuuuu
Gets 10/10 from me 💥💥💥
With the new proxy feature added to Shotcut have you thought about making an updated tutorial?
I guess not.
I see everyone doing it like this. While there is no need for all the file replacing, etc. You can just make 2 identical videotracks. One with the high quality and one with the low quality. (Gopro makes theses out of the box with .lrv files). I 'close the eye' on the high res track, edit the low res track and copy all the settings to the high end track as wel. This way switching between high res and low res editing is just one mouseclick instead of swapping files all the time. This is even more important for filters that use postioning, like text, because you cannot position these correctly on the lowres track ...
Doesn't shotcut already have a proxy setting in the property section
Hey there,,so I have done exactly what you said and it worked perfectly but when i tried doing that again for my second video, evey time i hit (add to que,add all) it tells me(please choose a different destination path),,how can i fix this?
Hey buddy,
I'm guessing your referring to converting the videos with handbrake. Sounds like you need to double check the output folder in settings is 100% correct and setup before you scan the folder for conversion. Open handbrake, select preferences, set the output folder and double check the curly brackets for output file name are correct too. Then rescan the output folder.
Good luck!
yes. now proxy functions already exist in ver.21.04.21 & I am trying it
I use proxy and when I save that image and put it into my video, the image quality is literally trash. how to fix it
PLEEEASE ANSWER
Are you certain you are pasting the high resolution originals Into the source folder, over writing the ones being used?
Also, ensure you close shotcut in-between!
My Files have exactly the same Names, but they don't ned to be replaced? WTF????
it lags as soon as i use any filter. any solutions??? can we render it again and again until the desired result is obtained?
So filters are a bit of a game of their own. Most of them use a large amount of processing power, even with videos rendered down! What your PC is having to do when previewing video with filters is essentially render the video on the fly to show it to you.
Couple of options:
- Firstly as you said above, you can render the final video to view the filter effect. If doing this I suggest applying as many of the filters as possible through the video so you can test them all in one hit
- When I had quite a slow processor, I used to use handbrake to take the quality all the way down to 360p instead of 720p. That helped make it more usable, as the smaller the video size, the less work the CPU has to do.
Hope that helps!
Good luck and happy editing!
@@diaboloshots Thank you very much, i guess i will have to go with 360p because i have to filter a lot, e.g chroma key split screen multiple takes as well as some effects. I am trying to make a music video and i am totally new to this thing. Thank you for your help.
It's a fun journey to go on! Everytime I use it I discover something new! Just take your time and experiment to your heart's content. Good luck with the music video!
@@diaboloshots thank you. You've been of great help.
@@diaboloshots I am having a problem. Before export, when i try to replace LQ with HQ, it doesn't replace and the files sit together side by side. Then i checked the formats and found out that HQ were mov and LQ were mp4. What shall i do now?
appreciate your video cheers canucktv.com
vid is too long :(
You can always play at 1.5X or 2X speed?
i agree. it needs some better structure and speed up about 10 percent in some areas.
