This was so useful and concise! I just wanted to let you know, when I googled "how to use proxy on shotcut", your video was the first result!! Good job!
Thanks for this amazing tutorial. You have explained it very well how to improve editing performance using proxy. I actually thought of leaving Shotcut behind because of the lagging problem. Thank God I found this video. 😀
@@GeekoutdoorsBrand I just used proxy for the first time and my exported file won't play. So I'm now trying to export the project with proxy turned off
This is great. I had video clips that were so boggy on the time line, that I could not do any editing except link them together with transitions and texts. Now, I can play the clip and cut out sections, etc. Geekoutdoors, I got as far as having my Proxy clip on the V2 timeline, and my full resolution clip (the same), below it. Now, do I just go ahead and do my editing on the Proxy time line and not touch the full resolution time line? How about when I go to export it, what would be the basic steps so that my finished product will show the editing done on the Proxy, but actually have the resolution of my full resolution clip? Thanks for the help.
Sure thing glad this helped! Whenever you export the file, it should be in the resolution that you set on your Project Settings and not the Proxy Clips resolutions.
Hey! I want to do this on my project but here's the thing. I put a clip in while editing, which was a whole video of 4 hours from which I was going to get clips from to edit for the project I was making, eventually however it would always freeze as I opened the project to continue editing, This is most definitely because of the 4 hour long video because I can still edit other videos in other projects, so it's not the program itself, but just that project with the 4 hour long clip. Any way to remove that 4 hour video from that file? Since I can't remove it from the original folder obviously, or the save file won't even open. And I can't open the project without the program freezing and then shutting down by itself after a while. Any tips on what to do here? I tried compressing it already by using other tutorials on TH-cam, but weirdly enough it didn't compress the video, it made it larger, and I followed every single step. Would really like to know how to compress the video well and/or if you know some method for me to even get the program to open so that I can make that clip a proxy clip or just remove it altogether so that I can get on with the project. Would really appreciate it.
Oh wow 4 Hours?!! That's a lot for me but not uncommon for some. I haven't worked with clips that long but to honest if I was, I'd probably have to break down the 4 hours into smaller clips (maybe 1 hour) that my computer could handle which could be different from yours so maybe experiment.
@@GeekoutdoorsBrand Hey, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure if I explained the whole thing properly. I did try what you advised in your reply, done it several times before, but the thing is that I need to find a way to remove that 4 hour clip from the project so that I can open the project to begin with. Or find some way to open it with the clip still in it, because the video I am making is not the 4 hour clip itself, but they're both in the same project, since the clip was just to have it on one track for me to extract scenes from. I can delete the 4 hour clip from the folder it's in, but then when I open the project it just says something like "can't open project because file so and so can't be located/is missing from its folder". So I need a way to get around that thing, to externally change that 4 hour clip or delete that clip, without opening the project itself. So that I then can open it successfully.
Ahhh I see you really need access to that project file. I really don't know and it seems you've tried the same things I would including removing 4 hour clip from folder but since project file was originally referring to that, still issues when trying to open 🤔
Thanks for the tip. Was working with older version 20.02.17 and downloaded the latest 20.07.11. During the install it was checked to Install and remove older files, so I'm thinking it would install right over the older version just adding most recent files. It was not successful as an error appeared "not able to write this file" Any issues that you know of that would of caused this? I do have 64bit and that's what I downloaded. Thanks.
I use proxy and when I save that image and put it into my video, the image quality is literally trash. how to fix it please please please please answer
In general, it creates lower res versions of your files to use in Video Editing and then when you render final video, you'll use the original hi res files.

You're very welcome and happy that this helped you out!
This channel has helped me out loads, I can't thank you enough
Awesome and you're welcome! Happy these videos helped you!
Do you need to uncheck the Use Proxy when exporting? Or just leave it and it will still export using the original high res file.
I just leave proxy settings and when you export, it will use original hi-res versions to export to whatever resolutions you had set.

@@GeekoutdoorsBrand so u can Judit Edit all you like and then when u export should go back to normal resolution before?
Is there a way to choose quality (resolution) of these proxies? That would be awesome! Default is 540, how can i reduce it to 144/240/360?
I don't recall if there was a way to choose resolution.
Thank you!
You're very welcome Ahmed!
Hi, if my camera (osmo pocket 2) already makes low res videos meant to be used as proxy, is there any way I can work them in shotcut?
Yup you should be able to but if test it.
Thank you for this great information!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sure thing glad it helped 😊
very usefull. Thnks
I am yet to use it but I only just found out about this . I was considering buying a new computer . hopefully i wont have to now
Hopefully your performance does improve with proxy versus spending more money 💰

Typically the proxy version will be of lower quality in your Project Timeline but once you export, it should use high quality version.

Does proxy make the video low hd or something
