I saw Sunderland comeback from 2-0 down to defeat Everton in the autumn of 1966 at Goodison Park in the old Football league Cup. There were many great players on show that night. The Everton team included Alex Young, Derek Temple and Alan Ball who would walk into any top premier club today. I think George Kinnell played Centre forward that night. With Dickie Rooke a big fair haired player at centre half. He was like an old Everton centre half, George Heslop who was part of the top Man City team in the late 60s Dick Rooke was an old fashion stopper who seemed to fade off the scene. Funnily, Everton beat Sunderland 3-0 in the FA Cup 3rd round in Jan 1966 on route to winning the FA Cup final that year.
I always thought Baxter was wasted at Sunderland & Notts Forest. He would’ve been better suited to a team like Everton at the time or one of the top London clubs!
Great to see “Slim Jim”, ( despite much belying 😂). At Sunderland. Saw him play for The Rangers many times throughout the 1960’s. Did have his autograph amongst many others but some charmless Cretan decided it would be a wonderful idea to make it disappear. But nevertheless Great Memories. They can never take that away from you.
Players like him in them days will not be forgotten, played for the clud, the fans, where are these players now ,far to many on thousands of pounds a week just greed for money, and fame, you can keep them, No matter who you support❤
Love it. Gentleman Jim, getting booked for attempted murder, 😂 Lorrimer, making to land a blow, before realising who it was. Bremner and Baxter playing against each other, brilliant.
why weren't sunderland playing in their red and white stripes? a close up shot was difficult to see any difference although it was black and white telly.
In those days in the FA Cup the home team changed if there was a colour clash and at the time Sunderland wore white shorts, so they wore one of their change strips red shirts and shorts (the other was white!), but Leeds also wore their change strip blue shirts and yellow shorts!
@@davidreed9671 thanks David for explanation, although i can't see how red & white stripes would even be confused with an all white shirt seeing as This season chelsea played man city at stamford bridge and both teams wore blue.

Odd title. Not really a lot of Baxter. One of my favorites. I was lucky to see him live. I cant think of anyone in the last 30+ years who was like him.
@@hectorlp1298 Most of those cuts which seems irrelevant are Baxter in defence or waiting for the ball in fine position but team didn't find him. I might have misidentified some players though.
It's a long time ago and I don't remember everything around the transfer at the time. I do remember the talk at school of getting people to sign up to pay a tanner a week toward slim Jim's wages (we were teenagers after all) to try to keep him at Ibrox. From that I'm thinking 'money' in some way, was the issue. Not a great surprise if that was the case.
Baxter one of the all time greats without breaking sweat.
Shame he didn't break sweat during training a bit more often.
So good he ended up moving to Sunderland.
@@jintsfan He went to Sunderland because they offered him the most money.
One of the best players I have ever been lucky enough to see play. Definitely world class.

Did Bobby Kerr suffer a bad injury in this game ,and had to be taken off.
Jinky Jim was my favourite player to watch. He had great ball skills

Billy bremner hard as hell
This was honest, tough, physical, sometimes brutal, skillful football..But real, not like the contrived crap we're seeing now.

Seven Scots in the Sunderland side
why did Rangers sell him ?
Baxter wanted more money and Rangers were not prepared to pay it.
