It's true. And it also gives you another useful stereo pair for pianos too where these sound lovely too. That's my favourite application for these. I doubt a pair of MD421s would be the goto for piano, most of the time at least ;) And a good pair to have for clear, crisp articulate backing vocals too. For overheads, the Warm Audio equivalent might be a good alternative; it's a darker voiced mic, which might also be decent on guitar cabs too. Though I'd much prefer the usual dynamics, m160s, Royer R121s or if going with a condensor...the lovely Soyuz 1974/017 Bomblet.
@@RecordingStudioLoser I like the little Line Audio CM4s for when I'm scared of the drummer. They are a hard target to hit, and really look just like the barrel end of an XLR cable, since they aren't much bigger/wider than that. They're neutral, but very slightly dark, which is nice for toms, overheads, violin/viola, high brass.
I've got a C414 but somehow it has stayed In the mic locker since I prefer to use tube mic. It's great for getting acoustic guitars to cut through busy mixes though, since it's very bright and focused.
Great voice my man! I've found these are a great choice for a nice natural brightness. At the price, great to have a pair for clear backing vocals and they're good on spoken word too. Drums, bass, guitar all sounding very right too. If the violin was OC16, I'm not sure it would be my first choice for that application - it emphasises the nasal character, and brings out the steely/grainly bowing noise a bit too much for my own taste. I like these 414 on overheads, especially to bring out the detail on kits played with brushes. But most of the time, I prefer u47 FET type mics, or even KM84s (when not ribbons, m160s etc..). And preferring these 414-types more for clear toms. They're fantastic to have a pair for piano, and probably would be great on double bass and cello.
I have a 214. Not bad. But it’s certainly not a 414. The 16 doesn’t sound a 214 to me. It’s not exactly a 414 either. But it feels like a more appropriate comparison in character.
I mean, yes if all you need is a cardioid polar pattern, then the oc16 is a no brainer, but the multi patterns on a 414 (or oc818), is largely the point for me, not an extra or bonus feature…
I've peronaly never tried it but when looking into drum sounds I love, it seems 414's are on toms a lot of the time. Obviously alot goes into getting drum sounds but it's at a point where it can't be a coincidence to my ears haha. Might have to grab a couple of these and give it a shot. Great video as always Jeremey. P.S. Love the track at the start!!
Yes. In a different context, 414 style stuff is massive on toms. Here i needed something a lighter, (at least I felt that way). Very much a "for this song" type of answer here. But its totally valid. I love c414s on country session on shells. for this i wanted that "swoosh" thing 414s tend to do on the tops for that early 2000s style tune
I would challenge the statement that you're overpaying if you buy a C414. I think too many people think "expensive" and "rip off" are the same thing. The C414 is worth the money to a lot of people (including me). It is also true that I wouldn't buy one on my budget. And less expensive mics can also sound great.
Brother... You need the "De-Bearder" plugin Jens Bogren talks about in one of his videos to give it a more dramatic touch to the vocal sound 😜excellent song... Thank you for all the valuable information you're putting out there. Fist bump from a Venezuelan lost in Ecuador!
Howdy! ✌🏻 What an awesome video, great, great review, and I'm definitely gonna add that mic to my collection. 🤟🏻 P.S. We need that song released, either streaming or digital download... 😁💪🏻 Just had it on repeat a few times. 👌🏻
It actually probably probably sounds a little better than modern C-414's. Even if it's cardioid only...Gotta trust Austrian Audio.... It is the O.G. AKG engineers!
Pipes boi!!! As a pretty okay-to-decent singer, I am humbled by your apparent skills. How much pitch correction? Some yeah? I feel like you left a few areas raw and touched up some others, is that way off?
I got about 18 mics in my collection. I’ve yet to spend over $400 on a mic. All I know is budget mics. lol. I look forward to a day I can justify spending more than $500. My favorite budget microphone is the Aston Orgin. Got 3 of them. Had 5 but gave a few of them to buddies ( they were used off eBay ) . I got the damn mic tattooed on me 😆
Sure. And even that is a point of contention among some people… are the xls or xlII even “really” c414s. I think they sound great 👍 I own a couple myself.
The audio for this orchestra is recorded on Austrian Audio and Lewitt mics. th-cam.com/video/RX6-lKgRUzQ/w-d-xo.html The mics never disappoint, but I might be biased just because I am the video guy in this context.
@@RecordingStudioLoser I will pass that on! Maybe I can get a walkthrough of the setup and put it up here on the TH-cam. We have three or four concerts next week.
It kinda depends on the version you reference. The old nylons. The top end is very different. The xls - actually feels pretty close. The xlII- way brighter top. More boost around 2-3k ish.
@RecordingStudioLoser yeah kinda but also not. it's also a transformerless mic like the xls and so on but it doesn't get lost as much in a mix. the xls is gone as soon as you add other elements. Also the top end is kinda grainy. It makes them the perfect guitar amp mic or for something that benefits from the midrange like a trombone or kick out but on vocals these suck. Take a 414 over the 818 every day.
@@RecordingStudioLoser lol I love the degree to which your ellipsis there is a supplication to the algorithmic demigods that you may soon have some Warm Audio gear bestowed upon you. May it be so! 🤞...
No no no. It’s because of something much more ridiculous… I don’t like warms logo… (I know it’s dumb) it’s like Peavey’s logo. I just don’t like it. I love the 5150. But I always thought twice about peavey gear because of it. Warms logo is the same for me. I know it’s dumb. 🤷

Anyway, others may think it's ridiculous, but I'm happy to join you in this ridiculousness! 😄 Keep up the good work!
That said I see joy coming from different things among different people. Some from gear, some from utilizing tools they can afford given circumstance. That said… Yes this is a different microphone than the c414. But these are the hands that used to make them.
Considering the music you're performing, any mic could do it. Mozart said it way before "as long as she's alive and wears a skirt..." Try your theory on a solo classical piano in a hall.

I just want to point out how impressive it is that you've been writing whole songs for these videos
It’s been good for me too. Even though stuff gets busy I need to give myself that time to write.
I love my OC818 but this makes using "414"s on toms a viable option without going broke. At a third of the price it's pretty amazing.
…and less stressful depending on the drummer…

What version of the 414 does this compare most closely to? On the hunt for a good B-ULS clone

How would you compare these to the wa14s? I know they based those off an older c414, but curious if you’ve tried both.
Love that bass tone!
Great song, awesome voice/vocals!
Do you have any experience with the OC18?
The 699€ cardioid only version of the OC818.
I don’t. I do that the 818.
But I know the 16 and the 18 have the same capsule. Obviously lots more options on the 18.
