Russians weren't really slavs. If some language came from the other one, it would be russian from ukrainian, but probably russian and ukrainian from proto-slavic. Also the German army is famous for their lack of functional weapons, for example they once bought 7 new planes and only one was usable. Supplying weapons isnt that easy if your army doesnt have any.
