I sooooo want a dog. Even have a place that allows one. BUT, I just can't commit to the time requirements to properly own one. Your repeated comments about what the dogs need for a healthy life are so correct. I couldn't live with myself by giving a dog a "bad" home. So, I live vicariously through your videos and with every dog that greets me - I'm a doggie magnet. Makes it all the harder. Great content.

@@morrislouiseeagle7161 💯 agree. I have the same problems so can’t own a dog but I foster shelter pups. They only stay for a week or two so it’s not long term. They get away from the shelter until adopted so win-win.
This is how my shepherd was when we first took him to a groomer. Took them about 5 hours to finish his groom because he needed many breaks and water. At that time I wasn’t doing much training with him. He did technically get “banned” because he was too much work not worth their effort. I understood and around that time we started major training (for other reasons as well) and he became overall a much better dog. I decided to begin grooming him myself which is how I found this channel I love so much, and now he is the goodest boy on a 8 week grooming schedule (spoiled rotten). He is a gorgeous show line and a very well trained shepherd now after we put in the education and work.
Imo training dogs should be an absolute necessity. I've seen and heard of way too many dogs that were untrained and it always ended up being bad for both dog and owner.

@@MimiMadness94 for my German shepherd specifically, I started watching Larry Krohn and Tom Davis (upstate canine academy). IMO they are fantastic trainers that have a lot of resources and recommendations out there. Every dog and owner is different, so it’s all about doing your research and working on the best methods for your dog. Also, depending on the level of training and the dog breed you have, it can take a lot of effort on the owners part, but I promise you it’s worth it. Although my shepherd is a showline, we’ve trained him up close to a working line level or at least a pretty high level of training because he loves it and I do too. Hope this helps and best of luck!

It breaks my heart to see shelters full or rehoming posts of working breeds. Most of the time people are unaware of, unable or unwilling to commit the energy to raising a working breed. But man they make the best dogs when you do! ❤️ I’ve been raised with Rottweilers, GSDs and Labs and loved them all!
My husky absolutely loves going to my grandpa's ranch and run around in the field. I try to take him every week but sometimes it isn't in the schedule.
This! I love GSDs - and we have a sweet one named Daisy - but they’re not for everyone. You have to go into it prepared to meet their mental and physical demands!
regardless of energy, some dogs are just afraid of strangers and strange objects. some dogs are more anxious indoors than outdoors at a park (like at the Vet). some had bad grooming experiences when they were younger. They should be desensitized and trained as much as possible, but Shepherds are just stranger danger dogs and many dog breeds don't like being physically handled. We place too much blame on the owners.
I had a friend who had a German shepherd as a family dog. He never got walked or played with much, they just wanted him for protection. As a result he was extremely anxious all the time and eventually ended up getting loose and attacking other dogs. He got rehomed obviously. You don't need an aggressive guard dog breed for your family pet unless you are going to be heavily invested in exercising (physically AND mentally) and training that dog!
There was an episode of It's Me or the Dog where the guy had a GSD that was attacking EVERYTHING. Door? Check. Tree? Check. Street signs? Check. Turns out the guy had taken her to a few schutzhund classes thinking he'd enjoy it, but got bored and quit cold turkey. Victoria got onto him for it being a lifestyle and (in a nicer way) that the guy was a moron to have started training the dog for something like that if he wasn't committed to it. And then especially since he did like no cooldown and just expected her to not want to bite anything after being trained that she needed to/would be rewarded for it.

Same with "my cat from hell". 99% of the time the problem is solved by providing for the animal's basic physical/mental/emotional needs, and 1% of the time it's a medical issue and a vet visit solves it. People think their animals are well cared for as long as they aren't starving 🙄

I’m my experience you just want a dog to warn you about someone trying to enter your home. Small dogs can do a great job and require less than a German shepherd
I had a Shepherd/Husky mix that was badly abused before we rescued him; he was covered in scars. To call him anxious was an understatement and since he was already 2 or 3 when we got him, we missed the most formative timeframe to socialize him. He never got used to any other human than my immediate family and only got along with our other dogs. He was, for the most part, a happy and very fluffy boy, but he scared so easily all the time.
my mum's partner has a Shepard/Husky mix that was abused before he rescued her as well... what a coincidence. i hope it's not a trend. she's very sweet (and very old) now! I don't know if she doesn't like being petted, or if me and my cat-owning sisters just don't know how to pet dogs, lmao
@@pepdog1 GSD and huskies are both breeds that are "desirable" by people who should never have dogs. I live in Oregon and know like a dozen or more people that have adopted "abused" husky mixes. I know a few dogs that were "rooftop dogs" in mexico...as huskies. I know huskies do alright in the heat because their fur insulates them to an extent, but to leave dogs on a roof top in mexico is just abuse. Unfortunately these seems to be a large amount of the folks who seek our these breeds. Sad stuff.
Been taking GSD to the groomers since a pup. He sits patiently and quietly. He’s so easy to bathe at home due to this too, learned his grooming manners ❤
100% you did it right! Training about grooming started with very young puppies works! I started socializing the GSD puppy I gave my Mom when she was weaned. All German Shepherds need vigorous exercise regularly. A friend used to drive his vehicle slowly on remote dirt roads to exercise his GSD. She was smart enough to stay ahead to avoid the exhaust.
@@slamshift6927 no, he never attacked anyone. he would just bark and his fur would stand up on his back. We never let him around people off leash so that he wouldn't have an opportunity to attack. I don't think he ever would, but that's what everyone says after their dog attacks someone, so we never took any chances. You seem to dislike pitbulls. Did you have a bad experience or is it based on all the bad news around them?

I L O V E when I see a dog have a muzzle on….especially when I’m with my kids. Even if the muzzle isn’t for aggression. People don’t train their dogs and I’ve gotten bitten bad before so I don’t trust anyone’s dog
@@xobelladonna2443yeah, i wish more people would muzzle their dogs. Like, it's not the dog's fault that they're aggressive, but if you train them to be used to a muzzle they don't even care about it, and it can prevent them from eating stuff off the floor, too!!
What I love about your "Difficult" grooms is the after footage. The animals never look stressed to the point of dangerous stress. Im so impressed that you do everything you need to do with minimal impact on an already-nervous dog.
I disagree. This dog is extremely stressed and this video was quite difficult to watch. Hopefully the owners invest time into helping him see grooming as less scary so he doesn't continually have to experience grooms like this

It always feels so weird to me to see high strung German Shepherds. Princess had to be the most chill dog ever. She only had 1 rule - Come within 3 feet of mommy, and you will be herded away. (She would grab the bottom of their pants leg and gently nudge nudge in the direction she wanted you to go. Then stare at you until you sat in the seat she chose for you.) But other than that, she was chill as can be. Neighbor's cats want to climb on her? Not a problem! Roommate's Chihuahua wants to pretend it's winning the pissing contest? Prince would lay down while the ankle biter got his energy out. And for groomers and vet visits? Express her anal glands first, and she will be the most obedient pupper while being groomed. Even when she needed blood work, they never had to fight her or splint her leg. Just offer her a piece of hot dog, and she was putty for the vet. Hell, even when an attempted home invader stabbed her, she just trotted back to me, smiling and wagging her tail, pleased as punch that she protected her home. I was just so happy she was safe, that it took a minute to notice her fur wasn't laying right. The knife essentially "skinned" her - separated her fur layers of skin from her fat and muscle encapsulating fascia. We rushed her to the emergency vet with my son holding her the whole drive. She never snipped or growled at him, even when in pain. Even as the vet was assessing her and pulling at the wound, she whined, but never growled or snapped. She was a good girl and nothing feels right without her anymore.
I felt that way about my dobie but after more than a decade got another dog. Isn't the same but is wonderful all the same. I understand where you are coming from. Yours was a real family member.
@@Yeshanuif they lived longer then the issue of abandoned old dogs would get even worse. If people can’t commit to a dog for 10 years imagine how many homeless dogs there would be if they lived 30 or 40 years
Thank you for talking about the working dog drive. My opinion is it's cruel to get a high drive dog and leave them to wallow with no mental stimulation and exercise. Good work as always and keep up the education on us. ❤
Agree. I train my dog every day with careful planning to keep her stimulated but she learns so fast, that I have to keep thinking of more and more so she doesn't get bored doing the same old thing. It's obvious when she lets me know something isn't that interesting anymore lol.
i get where youre coming from, but sometimes life gets in the way a lot. i make sure to take my german shepard on a 1-2 hour walk every weekend, but me and my family are busy during weekdays.
My 15-month-old GSD girl’s eyes and ears were glued to the TV while this video was playing because she heard the song of her people and was super concerned that one of her cousins was being tortured by the air snake 😂 And I chose precisely this moment to tell her that she’s getting a bath this weekend 😅 This is my first GSD mix and I can’t believe how little people talk about GSDs being super vocal. I joke with my dog that we are two anxious souls rescued each other😍
Took mine to the groomer’s for the first time the other day. I was allowed to hug him the entire time and, thanks to that, he remained calm and sweet. He was still uncomfortable but he did a good job and the groomer complimented him a lot. Though, to be cautious, the groomer still chose to put a muzzle when she dried him. And because he’s active, I asked her not to trim his nails.

As a former GSD mama, I appreciate this video. It took a little while to find a great groomer who was willing to work with my GSD. A little patience and understanding of the breed goes a long way, and his groomer was a wonderful woman!
@@jessepatterson8897 I think it's probably a breed bias. I'm sure there are groomers who don't want to groom Rotties or Staffy's or any other breed that's typically known as an aggressive breed. I've only run into this with my GSD. Never ran into a groomer not wanting to deal with my pug or Brittany.
I’ve been taking my GSD to the same lady for 3 years now, since she was 3 months old. She actually gets excited to go see her lol. I hope she never leaves
My German shepherd is 6 years old. Her name is Bela and she’s the sweetest dog ever. She has never once in her life bitten someone or a dog, and she never growls at people for that matter. I just love her personality so much, she still has her limits and when she does not like something someone is doing to her, she simply goes away. A true angel ❤️❤️
I’m a groomer and have my salon on my property. That’s exactly what my husband does when I’m dealing with a dog like that. I did an Alaskan Malamute today and it’s really hard for most women to not have any help at all in those moments. Sometimes my husband comes in just to check on me and make sure I’m still alive ☺️. At grooming school it often took 4 women to hold down a Great Pyrenees just to get the nails done! I love working alone but that’s the only downfall is the lack of muscle. Grateful my husband works from home👍.
I admire how realistic you are about working with dogs I see a lot of dog people and groomers get really comfortable with the dogs not caring where their face is or just brushing off aggression as an annoyance rather than a danger almost like they sugar coat it and as someone who also works with dogs it’s very relieving to see you understand the dangers of working with a big dog that you don’t know and wish more people were smart about it as I’ve seen alot of people get hurt by just being ignorant
Theyre very sensitive and alert dogs. Germans have a great ability to relax and curl up on the couch, but they *need* long walks, runs, hikes, etc. If they don't have a job to do or aren't given an hour + (ideally more) outside and on their feet every day, they can be destructive and potentially dangerous. I adore the breed for their all around temperament and loyalty. But they can't be handled like a Golden or Lab.
@Colin Burke that's a good point, I should have been clearer. Goldens and Labs are hunting/gun dogs so they absolutely need stimulation. I suppose the difference is those breeds tend to do better in a more relaxed setting (they're wonderful breeds). Germans love to cozy up and rest, but when they're awake they really need something to engage or tire them out.
My dog loves watching your videos with me. He usually just stares, tilts his head and sniffs the screen, but this one seemed to give him an anxiety attack hahah.
Thank you for grooming him with positive encouragement. We work hard with our shepherd and love on him, but being away from the "pack" is always high anxiety for him. He will sing you the song of his people all day as though he is being tortured. He gets super long walks and we trade of training so he gets to work with multiple family members. He is a wonderful dog, ridiculously patient with my kids, but separation stresses him no matter how often we work at it. :-/

Cross a husky with either malinois or shepherd and hold onto your hats, lol. All the pent up energy, ear splitting vocalizations with half the trainability. 🙄
@@ToastontheEastCoast our Malinois, who's a rescue, was listed as a German Shepherd/Husky mix. I tried (in vain) to find either of those breed's traits in her. It wasn't until we took her for her after adoption checkup that we found out what she was. @Em, oops! Guess that taught him! Mals like to be with their people. If we're both going to be gone all day, we hire a babysitter.
I had a German shepherd cross Labrador called Jessie and she would confuse everyone because while her colouring was mostly shepherd, her body shape was more Labrador. Because of this, most dogs don't really remind me of her, but this boy from his tummy to his tail (especially his back legs) look just like hers ❤
Couldn't agree more. You'd be surprised by how many dog owners are ignorant to their pet's grooming needs when they shouldn't be. I can't even count on 2 hands how many doodle owners don't bring their doodles in for grooming until the dog is 7+ months old. And by that time ofc the dog is matted and won't tolerate grooming. Guess what the owner's #1 request would be? "I don't want him shaved" Never fails.
requires people to care enough first, and many dont. Humanity can be inherently selfish and and many people are lazy, naive, and inconsiderate enough not to care enough to do so. That's work, research, and effort. And unfortunately not everyone things 'an animal' is worth that effort.... Even though we're animals, too. :/ Then again, humans can't even treat each other right half the time.
I like this idea. I’ve educated myself on grooming needs for possibly getting a dog in the future, but watching this really helped me recognize how a higher energy dog would be uncomfortable/anxious. My parents talked about how their German shepherd would whine and be dramatic when they clipped his nails.
I'm beginning to understand more the behaviour of my grandmother's German Shepards. Duchess was much more relaxed once she got past age 2, but she had a big yard, the occasional train to chase and a sense of job even if it was just lying under the table in my grandmother's room the afternoon. She didn't have pent up energy. Abby was more I want to interact with people and didn't chase any trains. She actually became a therapy dog because it allowed her to visit my grandmother once she moved to senior facility and the rest of the time she had kids to herd. Says something about the trainer my grandmother had. And when Abby did visit, she was this is my human and yeah I live with you but this is my human.
@@thisisforvids I remember we were there visiting her once when Dave brought Abby by, I took her out for a walk around the building and she marched along proudly and made a lot of people on their balconies happy to see her.
@@coyoteartist :') I think pets are like therapists. The connection between a pet and a human is so healing. Cats, dogs, hamsters, horses, iguanas, idc... They're all great for the soul. The only thing I care about is the animal being treated correctly and it being a legalðical choice.
I had to laugh watching this video! Bathing and drying my Shepherds is a wrestling match when we go the dog wash. Now they just come into the shower with me and it is so much easier. Enjoyed your video very much.

I love German Shepherds. My uncle had a retired K-9 German and I learned so much about that breed as a kid. I grew to love them so much they are in my Top 3 breeds ever.
German Shepherds used to be one of the most stable breeds out there several decades ago. After backyard breeders and puppy mills got their hands on them they have became one of the most unpredictable breeds.
@Ellie L - GSDs were HIGHLY prone to hip displacia even back in the early to mid 1970's. They were also a very high strung breed that did not board well at the clinic. It was noticeable unfortunately.
It's fascinating how people so casually talk about breeds and associated behavior. But go out of their way doing the same for humans. Perfectly rational and objective when dealing with dogs, horses, cats but somehow it becomes a moral issue when humans are involved.

I've had 3 German shepherds at various times of my life. 1st ate age 6, 2nd at age 17, 3rd at age 30. They were the most loyal, protective, intelligent, energetic dogs/friends/guards I've known. Love and miss them all. I have photos of me giving the 1st a bath on the lawn. In the photo I'm the one covered in bubbles the dog is the one holding the hose😡😨

dog anxiety is quite a bit different than human anxiety and can sometimes be tougher to spot pff, so comparing the two isn’t necessarily.. good? but i can see where you’re coming from. i’m also happy she kept him comfortable. ^^
My cats do not normally react to sounds from the computer, but this prompted one of them to leave their bed in the other room to come ask "What is going on?!?"
Gonna send this to a few of my clients. This is such a MILD case, too!! So many of the anxious dogs we get are dangerous to themselves and others, but the parents won't listen.
What a beautiful dog! I think this video really demonstrates the importance of acclimating your dog to having his feet touched. With our dog this came in extra handy when he had to have a twig pulled out of his paw pad at the vet!
@@abnunga So, my dad grew up mainly in a little house in rural Ontario. Near this house was a river. Now, being the unplanned youngest of three kids, his parents weren't always as attentive as they should've been. It was winter time, and he wandered out of the house. One of the dogs noticed and caught up to him a few feet from the river and dragged him to safety, then stayed with him until his folks found him. The ice was like, 1/4 inch thick. Here's the real kicker... this was in the days when it was normal to keep dogs outside, tied to trees. It must've taken Fibi FORTY MINUTES to break her chain. That dog must've been incredible.
When was going through vet tech school our teacher would tell us “we are too pretty to get bit, keep an eye on their behavior .” It was funny but so true. Watch them.

Yes, they do...the only breed I've had my whole life, they can be real *ss-holes, bull-headed as can be, and stubborn as *ell, but they are still the best breed of dog in the world...
I feel pretty lucky now to have always had laid back GSDs to deal with - I'm a volunteer for German Shepherd Dog Rescue here in the UK, and while fostering was not my main role, I did have a few emergency short-term fosters that I'd pick up from the pound or owner surrenders, before taking them to longer term foster or rehoming. All of them needed a bath. I'm not a groomer so just gave them the basics of a wash and brush so they were presentable and not stinky, and they were all fine. There was only one who definitely needed a full professional grooming, as his fur was matted down to his skin. My regional co-ordinator is actually a professional groomer, so she told me to bring him over, and she and her husband spent HOURS patiently clipping and de-matting him. He was such a good patient boy and never made a sound, just kept giving kisses despite how long it was taking, such an angel. He did have to be shaved down drastically on his hindquarters due to the severity of the matting, but she managed to blend the shortest hair into the longer quite tidily so he didn't look too bad. Fortunatley he'd come from a home with kids of all ages, cats, and had grown up with a smaller dog, he was gentle, well-behaved, and an absolute star, acing all his behaviour tests, so he was rehomed within a week to a loving forever home who had been pre-approved by their local home checker.
He's so darn CUTE! But yeah, he's gonna need some more practice to not be terrified of grooms. He wasn't absolutely horrendous and even his snaps at the blow dryer weren't at full-force, so that's a positive. I think with a bit of training and not letting him get his way, he'll be a model shep! ❤
My girl is an old GSD but when she and her sister went to the groomer I never got any complaints. Just the hair lol. The one left is anxious and hasn’t been without her. I am nervous to take her but I know they will take great care of her. Thanks for this video! ❤
Its amazing how much the sound of his unmistakable German shepherd whimpering gives me vivid memories of my childhood dog Hank. They can convey so much with the different types of whimpers, the are remarkably communicative dogs.

Mine hated the vacuum the second I brought him home at 7.5 weeks..still does..I have to put him outside! I couldn’t desensitize him no matter what I’ve tried!

Don’t take it personal, I think he was inviting you to do something with him that he loves - run. I love the one comment about running the dog prior to grooming. I do this with my Great Pyrenees and Golden Retriever. The groomer loves them! ❤😂🎉
I've had Shepherds for 28 years (and worked with them a lot while working in a dog kennel) and found myself nodding vigorously in the beginning of the video as you described them (during his bath). I thought for sure he was going to bite you a few different times in the shower! You were pretty brave trimming his nails also-at one point I was worried he was going to swing around on you. At least he didn't do what happened to us when we bathed a certain Shepherd at the kennel; after his VERY stressful grooming session, he immediately got stress diarrhea. NOT fun.....
I had 3 shepherds and now a 125lb purebred male Rottweiler. I usually take them hiking for at least 1.5 hour before grooming. Best dogs ever! Love your humor and knowledge on these fur babies.

volunteer at your local shelter - it would give you a dog fix and the shelter dogs get a person who come to them with love

@@morrislouiseeagle7161 💯 agree. I have the same problems so can’t own a dog but I foster shelter pups. They only stay for a week or two so it’s not long term. They get away from the shelter until adopted so win-win.

This is how my shepherd was when we first took him to a groomer. Took them about 5 hours to finish his groom because he needed many breaks and water. At that time I wasn’t doing much training with him. He did technically get “banned” because he was too much work not worth their effort. I understood and around that time we started major training (for other reasons as well) and he became overall a much better dog. I decided to begin grooming him myself which is how I found this channel I love so much, and now he is the goodest boy on a 8 week grooming schedule (spoiled rotten). He is a gorgeous show line and a very well trained shepherd now after we put in the education and work.
Imo training dogs should be an absolute necessity. I've seen and heard of way too many dogs that were untrained and it always ended up being bad for both dog and owner.
How did you learn to train your dog? I feel lost.
@@MimiMadness94 every dog is different but there alot of books, channels and personal trainers that are helpful. basic obedience is key before one can step up with training. best o luck!
@@MimiMadness94 for my German shepherd specifically, I started watching Larry Krohn and Tom Davis (upstate canine academy). IMO they are fantastic trainers that have a lot of resources and recommendations out there.
Every dog and owner is different, so it’s all about doing your research and working on the best methods for your dog. Also, depending on the level of training and the dog breed you have, it can take a lot of effort on the owners part, but I promise you it’s worth it.
Although my shepherd is a showline, we’ve trained him up close to a working line level or at least a pretty high level of training because he loves it and I do too. Hope this helps and best of luck!

It breaks my heart to see shelters full or rehoming posts of working breeds. Most of the time people are unaware of, unable or unwilling to commit the energy to raising a working breed. But man they make the best dogs when you do! ❤️ I’ve been raised with Rottweilers, GSDs and Labs and loved them all!
My husky absolutely loves going to my grandpa's ranch and run around in the field. I try to take him every week but sometimes it isn't in the schedule.
GSD's are pretty much the most wonderful breed, IMO. :)

This! I love GSDs - and we have a sweet one named Daisy - but they’re not for everyone. You have to go into it prepared to meet their mental and physical demands!
regardless of energy, some dogs are just afraid of strangers and strange objects. some dogs are more anxious indoors than outdoors at a park (like at the Vet). some had bad grooming experiences when they were younger. They should be desensitized and trained as much as possible, but Shepherds are just stranger danger dogs and many dog breeds don't like being physically handled. We place too much blame on the owners.
I had a friend who had a German shepherd as a family dog. He never got walked or played with much, they just wanted him for protection. As a result he was extremely anxious all the time and eventually ended up getting loose and attacking other dogs. He got rehomed obviously. You don't need an aggressive guard dog breed for your family pet unless you are going to be heavily invested in exercising (physically AND mentally) and training that dog!
There was an episode of It's Me or the Dog where the guy had a GSD that was attacking EVERYTHING. Door? Check. Tree? Check. Street signs? Check. Turns out the guy had taken her to a few schutzhund classes thinking he'd enjoy it, but got bored and quit cold turkey. Victoria got onto him for it being a lifestyle and (in a nicer way) that the guy was a moron to have started training the dog for something like that if he wasn't committed to it. And then especially since he did like no cooldown and just expected her to not want to bite anything after being trained that she needed to/would be rewarded for it.

Same with "my cat from hell". 99% of the time the problem is solved by providing for the animal's basic physical/mental/emotional needs, and 1% of the time it's a medical issue and a vet visit solves it. People think their animals are well cared for as long as they aren't starving 🙄

I’m my experience you just want a dog to warn you about someone trying to enter your home. Small dogs can do a great job and require less than a German shepherd
I had a Shepherd/Husky mix that was badly abused before we rescued him; he was covered in scars. To call him anxious was an understatement and since he was already 2 or 3 when we got him, we missed the most formative timeframe to socialize him. He never got used to any other human than my immediate family and only got along with our other dogs. He was, for the most part, a happy and very fluffy boy, but he scared so easily all the time.

@@pepdog1 GSD and huskies are both breeds that are "desirable" by people who should never have dogs. I live in Oregon and know like a dozen or more people that have adopted "abused" husky mixes. I know a few dogs that were "rooftop dogs" in mexico...as huskies. I know huskies do alright in the heat because their fur insulates them to an extent, but to leave dogs on a roof top in mexico is just abuse. Unfortunately these seems to be a large amount of the folks who seek our these breeds. Sad stuff.
Been taking GSD to the groomers since a pup. He sits patiently and quietly. He’s so easy to bathe at home due to this too, learned his grooming manners ❤
Yes mine was the same way. I also socialized him a whole lot. Even the vets were surprised how well mannered my GSD was.
100% you did it right! Training about grooming started with very young puppies works! I started socializing the GSD puppy I gave my Mom when she was weaned. All German Shepherds need vigorous exercise regularly. A friend used to drive his vehicle slowly on remote dirt roads to exercise his GSD. She was smart enough to stay ahead to avoid the exhaust.

Did you have a bad experience or is it based on all the bad news around them?

I disagree. This dog is extremely stressed and this video was quite difficult to watch. Hopefully the owners invest time into helping him see grooming as less scary so he doesn't continually have to experience grooms like this

It always feels so weird to me to see high strung German Shepherds. Princess had to be the most chill dog ever. She only had 1 rule - Come within 3 feet of mommy, and you will be herded away. (She would grab the bottom of their pants leg and gently nudge nudge in the direction she wanted you to go. Then stare at you until you sat in the seat she chose for you.)
But other than that, she was chill as can be. Neighbor's cats want to climb on her? Not a problem! Roommate's Chihuahua wants to pretend it's winning the pissing contest? Prince would lay down while the ankle biter got his energy out.
And for groomers and vet visits? Express her anal glands first, and she will be the most obedient pupper while being groomed. Even when she needed blood work, they never had to fight her or splint her leg. Just offer her a piece of hot dog, and she was putty for the vet. Hell, even when an attempted home invader stabbed her, she just trotted back to me, smiling and wagging her tail, pleased as punch that she protected her home. I was just so happy she was safe, that it took a minute to notice her fur wasn't laying right. The knife essentially "skinned" her - separated her fur layers of skin from her fat and muscle encapsulating fascia. We rushed her to the emergency vet with my son holding her the whole drive. She never snipped or growled at him, even when in pain. Even as the vet was assessing her and pulling at the wound, she whined, but never growled or snapped.
She was a good girl and nothing feels right without her anymore.
I felt that way about my dobie but after more than a decade got another dog. Isn't the same but is wonderful all the same. I understand where you are coming from. Yours was a real family member.

Agree. I train my dog every day with careful planning to keep her stimulated but she learns so fast, that I have to keep thinking of more and more so she doesn't get bored doing the same old thing. It's obvious when she lets me know something isn't that interesting anymore lol.
i get where youre coming from, but sometimes life gets in the way a lot. i make sure to take my german shepard on a 1-2 hour walk every weekend, but me and my family are busy during weekdays.
My 15-month-old GSD girl’s eyes and ears were glued to the TV while this video was playing because she heard the song of her people and was super concerned that one of her cousins was being tortured by the air snake 😂 And I chose precisely this moment to tell her that she’s getting a bath this weekend 😅 This is my first GSD mix and I can’t believe how little people talk about GSDs being super vocal. I joke with my dog that we are two anxious souls rescued each other😍
The best thing about GSDs is the happy pig noises they make. My girl used to snort when she got a really good nose rub.

Took mine to the groomer’s for the first time the other day. I was allowed to hug him the entire time and, thanks to that, he remained calm and sweet. He was still uncomfortable but he did a good job and the groomer complimented him a lot.
Though, to be cautious, the groomer still chose to put a muzzle when she dried him.
And because he’s active, I asked her not to trim his nails.

As a former GSD mama, I appreciate this video. It took a little while to find a great groomer who was willing to work with my GSD. A little patience and understanding of the breed goes a long way, and his groomer was a wonderful woman!

@@jessepatterson8897 I think it's probably a breed bias. I'm sure there are groomers who don't want to groom Rotties or Staffy's or any other breed that's typically known as an aggressive breed. I've only run into this with my GSD. Never ran into a groomer not wanting to deal with my pug or Brittany.

My German shepherd is 6 years old. Her name is Bela and she’s the sweetest dog ever. She has never once in her life bitten someone or a dog, and she never growls at people for that matter. I just love her personality so much, she still has her limits and when she does not like something someone is doing to her, she simply goes away. A true angel ❤️❤️

I’m a groomer and have my salon on my property. That’s exactly what my husband does when I’m dealing with a dog like that. I did an Alaskan Malamute today and it’s really hard for most women to not have any help at all in those moments. Sometimes my husband comes in just to check on me and make sure I’m still alive ☺️. At grooming school it often took 4 women to hold down a Great Pyrenees just to get the nails done! I love working alone but that’s the only downfall is the lack of muscle. Grateful my husband works from home👍.

I admire how realistic you are about working with dogs I see a lot of dog people and groomers get really comfortable with the dogs not caring where their face is or just brushing off aggression as an annoyance rather than a danger almost like they sugar coat it and as someone who also works with dogs it’s very relieving to see you understand the dangers of working with a big dog that you don’t know and wish more people were smart about it as I’ve seen alot of people get hurt by just being ignorant

They’re always at high alert.
Theyre very sensitive and alert dogs. Germans have a great ability to relax and curl up on the couch, but they *need* long walks, runs, hikes, etc. If they don't have a job to do or aren't given an hour + (ideally more) outside and on their feet every day, they can be destructive and potentially dangerous.
I adore the breed for their all around temperament and loyalty. But they can't be handled like a Golden or Lab.
@@135Patriots I had a golden once, and they LOVE to work, run, fetch and swim, so I can only imagine what a GSD needs to be properly tuckered out.
@Colin Burke that's a good point, I should have been clearer. Goldens and Labs are hunting/gun dogs so they absolutely need stimulation. I suppose the difference is those breeds tend to do better in a more relaxed setting (they're wonderful breeds). Germans love to cozy up and rest, but when they're awake they really need something to engage or tire them out.

My dog loves watching your videos with me. He usually just stares, tilts his head and sniffs the screen, but this one seemed to give him an anxiety attack hahah.
Thank you for grooming him with positive encouragement. We work hard with our shepherd and love on him, but being away from the "pack" is always high anxiety for him. He will sing you the song of his people all day as though he is being tortured. He gets super long walks and we trade of training so he gets to work with multiple family members. He is a wonderful dog, ridiculously patient with my kids, but separation stresses him no matter how often we work at it. :-/

@@ToastontheEastCoast our Malinois, who's a rescue, was listed as a German Shepherd/Husky mix. I tried (in vain) to find either of those breed's traits in her. It wasn't until we took her for her after adoption checkup that we found out what she was.

I had a German shepherd cross Labrador called Jessie and she would confuse everyone because while her colouring was mostly shepherd, her body shape was more Labrador. Because of this, most dogs don't really remind me of her, but this boy from his tummy to his tail (especially his back legs) look just like hers ❤

Couldn't agree more. You'd be surprised by how many dog owners are ignorant to their pet's grooming needs when they shouldn't be. I can't even count on 2 hands how many doodle owners don't bring their doodles in for grooming until the dog is 7+ months old. And by that time ofc the dog is matted and won't tolerate grooming. Guess what the owner's #1 request would be? "I don't want him shaved" Never fails.
requires people to care enough first, and many dont. Humanity can be inherently selfish and and many people are lazy, naive, and inconsiderate enough not to care enough to do so. That's work, research, and effort. And unfortunately not everyone things 'an animal' is worth that effort.... Even though we're animals, too. :/ Then again, humans can't even treat each other right half the time.
I like this idea. I’ve educated myself on grooming needs for possibly getting a dog in the future, but watching this really helped me recognize how a higher energy dog would be uncomfortable/anxious. My parents talked about how their German shepherd would whine and be dramatic when they clipped his nails.

I'm beginning to understand more the behaviour of my grandmother's German Shepards. Duchess was much more relaxed once she got past age 2, but she had a big yard, the occasional train to chase and a sense of job even if it was just lying under the table in my grandmother's room the afternoon. She didn't have pent up energy. Abby was more I want to interact with people and didn't chase any trains. She actually became a therapy dog because it allowed her to visit my grandmother once she moved to senior facility and the rest of the time she had kids to herd. Says something about the trainer my grandmother had. And when Abby did visit, she was this is my human and yeah I live with you but this is my human.
that's really sweet. Your grandmother and her GSD had a beautiful, lifelong connection. I'm glad they could still be together after her move.
@@thisisforvids I remember we were there visiting her once when Dave brought Abby by, I took her out for a walk around the building and she marched along proudly and made a lot of people on their balconies happy to see her.

I love German Shepherds. My uncle had a retired K-9 German and I learned so much about that breed as a kid. I grew to love them so much they are in my Top 3 breeds ever.

German Shepherds used to be one of the most stable breeds out there several decades ago. After backyard breeders and puppy mills got their hands on them they have became one of the most unpredictable breeds.

@Ellie L - GSDs were HIGHLY prone to hip displacia even back in the early to mid 1970's. They were also a very high strung breed that did not board well at the clinic. It was noticeable unfortunately.
It's fascinating how people so casually talk about breeds and associated behavior.
But go out of their way doing the same for humans. Perfectly rational and objective when dealing with dogs, horses, cats but somehow it becomes a moral issue when humans are involved.

I've had 3 German shepherds at various times of my life. 1st ate age 6, 2nd at age 17, 3rd at age 30. They were the most loyal, protective, intelligent, energetic dogs/friends/guards I've known. Love and miss them all. I have photos of me giving the 1st a bath on the lawn. In the photo I'm the one covered in bubbles the dog is the one holding the hose😡😨

dog anxiety is quite a bit different than human anxiety and can sometimes be tougher to spot pff, so comparing the two isn’t necessarily.. good? but i can see where you’re coming from. i’m also happy she kept him comfortable. ^^
My cats do not normally react to sounds from the computer, but this prompted one of them to leave their bed in the other room to come ask "What is going on?!?"
Gonna send this to a few of my clients. This is such a MILD case, too!! So many of the anxious dogs we get are dangerous to themselves and others, but the parents won't listen.
What a beautiful dog! I think this video really demonstrates the importance of acclimating your dog to having his feet touched. With our dog this came in extra handy when he had to have a twig pulled out of his paw pad at the vet!
I can’t help teasing mine by barely touching his back foot pads, it tickles, he kicks and then tries to mouth me..makes me laugh!

@@abnunga So, my dad grew up mainly in a little house in rural Ontario. Near this house was a river. Now, being the unplanned youngest of three kids, his parents weren't always as attentive as they should've been. It was winter time, and he wandered out of the house. One of the dogs noticed and caught up to him a few feet from the river and dragged him to safety, then stayed with him until his folks found him. The ice was like, 1/4 inch thick. Here's the real kicker... this was in the days when it was normal to keep dogs outside, tied to trees. It must've taken Fibi FORTY MINUTES to break her chain. That dog must've been incredible.

I feel pretty lucky now to have always had laid back GSDs to deal with - I'm a volunteer for German Shepherd Dog Rescue here in the UK, and while fostering was not my main role, I did have a few emergency short-term fosters that I'd pick up from the pound or owner surrenders, before taking them to longer term foster or rehoming. All of them needed a bath. I'm not a groomer so just gave them the basics of a wash and brush so they were presentable and not stinky, and they were all fine.
There was only one who definitely needed a full professional grooming, as his fur was matted down to his skin. My regional co-ordinator is actually a professional groomer, so she told me to bring him over, and she and her husband spent HOURS patiently clipping and de-matting him. He was such a good patient boy and never made a sound, just kept giving kisses despite how long it was taking, such an angel.
He did have to be shaved down drastically on his hindquarters due to the severity of the matting, but she managed to blend the shortest hair into the longer quite tidily so he didn't look too bad.
Fortunatley he'd come from a home with kids of all ages, cats, and had grown up with a smaller dog, he was gentle, well-behaved, and an absolute star, acing all his behaviour tests, so he was rehomed within a week to a loving forever home who had been pre-approved by their local home checker.
He's so darn CUTE! But yeah, he's gonna need some more practice to not be terrified of grooms. He wasn't absolutely horrendous and even his snaps at the blow dryer weren't at full-force, so that's a positive. I think with a bit of training and not letting him get his way, he'll be a model shep! ❤
My girl is an old GSD but when she and her sister went to the groomer I never got any complaints. Just the hair lol. The one left is anxious and hasn’t been without her. I am nervous to take her but I know they will take great care of her. Thanks for this video! ❤

Its amazing how much the sound of his unmistakable German shepherd whimpering gives me vivid memories of my childhood dog Hank. They can convey so much with the different types of whimpers, the are remarkably communicative dogs.

This is why I'm glad I made sure to desensitise our working lines and I always ensure they are mentally and physically tired before a groom, but usually I do it myself tbf

Mine hated the vacuum the second I brought him home at 7.5 weeks..still does..I have to put him outside! I couldn’t desensitize him no matter what I’ve tried!
He winked when you said the drying snake must be exterminated 😂. My first GSD loved bath time. Tell him Tonka want a bath? Jumped in the tub he growled or grumbled at my husband if he came in the bathroom. That was his time with mom.

Don’t take it personal, I think he was inviting you to do something with him that he loves - run. I love the one comment about running the dog prior to grooming. I do this with my Great Pyrenees and Golden Retriever. The groomer loves them! ❤😂🎉

I've had Shepherds for 28 years (and worked with them a lot while working in a dog kennel) and found myself nodding vigorously in the beginning of the video as you described them (during his bath). I thought for sure he was going to bite you a few different times in the shower! You were pretty brave trimming his nails also-at one point I was worried he was going to swing around on you. At least he didn't do what happened to us when we bathed a certain Shepherd at the kennel; after his VERY stressful grooming session, he immediately got stress diarrhea. NOT fun.....
I must have gotten lucky with my girl. She loves baths and is super calm the entire time. She loves being towel dried, to her it’s just extra pets.
I had 3 shepherds and now a 125lb purebred male Rottweiler. I usually take them hiking for at least 1.5 hour before grooming. Best dogs ever! Love your humor and knowledge on these fur babies.
