There are some incorrect assumptions in these comments.
First off, this is my dog. Uma is a wonderful dog and loves all the attention she is getting!
Secondly, she is not a mutt or a “miniature” German Shepherd. The title of the video was meant to be a joke. I’ve read so many comments from people who obviously didn’t watch the video. They just saw the title and decided to post comments.
Thirdly, Swedish Vallhunds are a very ancient breed. They are what is known as a “primitive” dog breed. They often traveled with Vikings. This breed came before German Shepherds.
Uma is well bred and her father was even at Westminster competing for Best of Breed this year. Please, before any of you comment something, please actually watch and listen to Vanessa’s accurate description of the breed.
Your girl is absolutely precious. Great job with her!
I have never seen this breed! Thanks for explanation!
Today I learned vikings loved cute dogs. Your dog is adorable.
Well said. She is adorable.
She be but tiny but I’ll be darned if she’s not mighty she’s our little Viking and she will triumph
As this little girl's breeder, I'm ridiculously proud of her and her owners. Such great representation for both the breed and proper dog ownership. ❤
Great job! ❤
Thanks Sara!! You gave us a great dog🩷
Thank you for giving us our baby!
She is amazing!
@sarawa6525 can I ask why some are born with tails and some without . Or is that just random genetics. Beautiful breed and such a sweet girl
It’s so refreshing to see a smaller breed of dog so incredibly well trained. It upsets me that so many owners often skip basic training with smaller dogs and let them get away with poor behavior because they’re “cute and harmless.” Uma is great representation of how well mannered and polite little dogs can be with proper training 🙌🏻
Where are you from ? I'm on the border of New York & Connecticut: the majority of small dogs here are trained well. It's the opposite for me lol I'm surprised when I do come across one that doesn't listen or is jumpy, barking obsessively etc ...
@@What.The.Chell_lolaq11 QA
You are so right. Its why so many of us roll our eyes and think of small dogs as mean, ankle biters. They aren't. Just so much bad parenting
@thedirtprincess3293 and bad genetics that entangled wires and make some angry neurotic dogs with chronic health issues.
My mini poodle mix is probably my best trained/most responsive dog I own. I got him during the pandemic and had nothing better to do and he naturally has a people pleasing personality. But a lot of small dogs are high strung and I think it is partially the owner and partially just genetics.
The owners of this cute little dog did a great job! You can tell she is happy and secure around strangers. Respect for raising such a lovely creature!
Great post and I am sure they are proud to know how well Uma behaves form their teachings....
Now if only we can get parents to do the same thing with their kids 🤣
@@layplum Are you Swedish or what made you decide on this breed? 😄
@@layplumWhat a precious Floof hound!
@@Cazzandra1We did a ton of research on about a million breeds and it came down to the Vallhund or Finnish Lapphund. We contacted breeders for both breeds and a Val breeder got back to us almost
Immediately saying the person she was mentoring had a litter due in a few months:)
@@layplum Uma is just perfection x
As someone from Sweden, I appreciate you for spotlighting this breed of dog as it sadly has been overlooked by most people, even in my home country thanks to the popularity of the Corgi.
That being said, most people I have seen with this dog, have it as a working dog first and family dog second so as someone who never had this dog myself, anyone who’s interested in this breed might have to keep in mind for their high exercise demand compared to other breeds of similar size.
But then again, I have never encountered one who has not been an angel so take all of my opinion with a grain of salt.
It is possible to have a working dog as a pet and have them be happy, I just think most people underestimate how much effort and cost goes into making the dog happy and well-adjusted. It helps to have a large yard and lots of interactive toys, but the owner should be prepared to train regularly with their working dog for mental stimulation and taking them to doggie daycare a couple of times a week can be really helpful. Agility can also be helpful. Can’t stress enough how important it is to keep them mentally stimulated!!
@@BigGuy-ox3hc I don't think it's possible to have a border collie in the city that is going to be happy and not end up a total nutcase. I mean border collies sort of teeter on the edge as it is 😁, but that's a dog that needs a real job! I think walks twice a day and the occasional dog park is just not enough for that breed.
I've never understood why they're not more popular, especially with corgis being popular in the livestock showing world. You would think cowboys would love a corgi with more working potential!
@BigGuy-ox3hc then they wonder why the dog chewed through the apartment dry wall.
@BigGuy-ox3hc not all border collies are workable dogs. People tend to forget even in working breed you have animals that don4 have enough drive. It's how pet lines are created and often how show lines are created.
It's extremely funny how very much she looks like a corgie-shepherd despite being a totally separate breed that predates both! Uma looks like a darling. 💗
This is the first breed you've introduced to the public I've never heard of. She is beautiful and well behaved. Thank you for featuring her. Uma, you are precious.
For me it was the opposite, I've only recognized about half the breeds she has featured but when Uma walked through the door my reaction was "Västgötaspets! 👀👀👀". 😅
@@ellenkarlsson9490 Ah now it makes sense, never heard of "Svensk Vallhund"

@@CarolynDowning Hi Carolyn
@@layplumHi Leah
I live in Sweden and this is an ancient breed of its' own. It is not a cross of anything, it is a stand alone breed going back to the time of the Vikings. It's a herding breed and a good one at that. Very happy to see this represented on this wonderful channel. 😊
Would never have figured it for a shepherd given its size. What does it shepherd?
@@music79075 It shepards mostly cattle but pretty much any farm animal from pigs, sheep or goats they can handle. These dogs are highly adaptable to herding. They are high energy dogs and require plenty of exercise. They need to feel a purpose as a working dog, and do not do well otherwise.
@@music79075if you think about it, she's the same size and body plan as a heeler
It's nice to see breeds from Europe too, especially from Nordic countries. Swedish vallhund is familiar breed to me, because I'm from Finland so we have our own bunch of these little guys. ^.^
She literally said that… in the first 60 seconds of the video …
The Swedish Vallhund is one of the only smaller dog breeds I’d own. They’re amazing dogs with good health and can actually do good with hiking unlike Corgis. They’re so adorable 😊
SO FREAKING ADORABLE!!
To "valla" is to have the dog let livestock graze in non fenced areas to keep them from wandering off.
My corgi does great with hiking, although her legs are more like this dogs. Not as stumpy as some corgis.
Some corgis love hiking, it just depends on the dog. But yes, valhunds are adorable.
My dog is a weird mix and looks a little bit like the Swedish Valhund. :)
0:32 *"We're gonna have a fun time."* That tone has the same energy as a mom telling all the kids in the mini-van they'd better behave at the stranger's birthday party they've been invited to.
"Okaaay?" 😂😂❤
My kids: “Guess who’s going to be embarrassed today?”
You're going to have fun whether you like it or not you little brats!
Except this time it was one of those parties where they have ice cream cake and a bouncy castle, and everyone DOES have fun.
I was totally expecting this to be a breed of dog bred for cuteness like pugs, so I was totally shocked to learn this is not only not true but this is a ancient breed. Why breed irresponsibly when this breed already exists? so adorable.
I know right!! And they look like puppies basically their whole lives, as my six year old dude is often mistaken as a puppy due to big ears, and short thick legs.
A corgi build. A German Shepherd look. Interesting. This is the first time in my 72 years that I’ve heard of this breed. This pup has a nice temperament. Fascinating to see a shepherd look in a corgi body. Thanks for the video.
What a sweet girl! As a Swede myself, I'm happy to have her represent our nation so well 🇸🇪
U single?
She's right up there with the Swedish meatball and IKEA! 😂
Swede pride!
❤
We don’t like sweeds in dah u s of a
I have a Swedish vallhund too! Or Västgötaspets, as we call them here in Sweden. His name is Ziggy and he'll be 12 years old in October this year. He loves his stuffed animal, which is a dolphin that's more than two thirds his size, and he carries it around all over the house. He'll even go and get it when we're about go down to the basement, and then he'll throw it down the stairs before he starts walking down himself. It's honestly the absolute gosh darn cutest thing I think I've ever seen. ❤
He sounds like a adorable doggo❤
😂 That has to be the funniest and cutest thing to watch a stuffed dolphin getting flung down the stairs followed by a furry wiggle butt trotting after it. 😂😍
I can tell how much the cameraman loved the dog. Don't blame him. She's adorable
Awesome to see this breed featured. There's so many Nordic dogbreeds that are unique and amazing, but not well known outside of their home countries.
Finnish Lapphunds are such good boys, and Finnish Spitz are just snow shibas 😂
Oh my gosh. I don't know how you were able to refrain from picking her up and giving her all the cuddles and kisses. Such a cute little nugget!
Who says she didn't? I couldn't.
What got me about here wasn't even the off-the-charts cuteness, but her eyes.
Very attentive to everything happening around her and always taking things in!
Defo got those herding dog eyes, I also love them but they are to active for my lifestyle haha
A thousand-year-old, pure-bred working dog of which very few of us have ever even heard! As usual, thanks for introducing us & educating us about this dog! You’re an exceptional hooman!
As an owner of two Norwegian Buhunds, I’m happy to see Nordic breed highlighted! Uma is a doll ❤
My Norwegian Elkhounds have Norwegian Buhunds for cousins. So many curly tails!
Greetings from Finland!
Same here, always happy to see ours or our neighbours breeds from here north Europe on spotlight❤
Love love love Swedish Vallhund aka Västgötaspets. My neighbour has three of them, and they're ofc pretty common here in Sweden :'D
In my world they look like corgi-wolfs, basically a corgi cosplaying a wolf, and my mood always improve whenever I see one out and about
I never seen them for the 40+ years I lived in Sweden, and never heard of them, but now I realize that I probably seen a lot of them, but wrote them off as cute German shepherd puppies. 😄
I also own one and I'm from Sweden I've only seen one of them in the "wild". So I wouldn't say they are that common sadly. It's an amazing breed. I love my västgötaspets.
@@yoldovah1242 really? I see them quite often. I guess they're more popular in some areas maybe?
@@Rayxster kanske att dom är mer vanliga där dom kan arbeta som på en gård eller liknande. Kanske inte lika vanlig i Stockholms innerstad
I love how you show your audience all different dog breeds! 💕
How about mutts? I adopted a shelter mutt and he gets regular visits to the groomer. Have not seen a single mutt on ur channel.
@@Reina.Nijinsky I have seen her talk about mutts or mixed breeds on this channel before and often times she goes into the different breed components of those mixes. She has also groomed dogs such as Pitt bulls who have negative stereotypes around them and are often in shelters. I personally love mutts and volunteer weekly at my local county shelter so I understand where you are coming from, but she is a content creator so she probably grooms more dogs than she shows and picks ones that will make new content. But who knows? I would love to see more mix breeds on her channel too they are often gorgeous dogs!
Same......I learn so much from this channel! 💜🐕💜
No mutts? Have you seen her live with the shelter dogs looking for homes?
I never knew there were so many breeds out there. With the exception of the ones that we always see but these different breeds really interesting to see them and learn about them.
Honestly Swedish Vallhunds have been one of my favourites ever since I first saw one with a grey-and-white coat and went "Is that.... a corgified husky???" and got a good laugh from the owner. I then decided to do a ridiculous amount of research, and they're just so neat. I've only ever met one, and he was SO sweet. It's so cool to see such a variety of breeds on your channel!
You're not the only one who fell in love for this pup! The look on her face when you were blow drying her, was priceless. I really enjoy how you give us so much info on the dogs. Take care.
Her face is not like a puppy but she seems really smart and open to new experiences, after the dry and the hoodie came off she seemed to be looking at you with a "So what are we doing now?" look, like she was ready for anything.
I noticed that too! She's so attentive and intelligent and confident. Good breeders, good parents, good puppy all around.
@@Kyosumari As an old breed they had a lot of time to pick good dogs. Later breeds seem to be bred for looks not function anymore. I bet there are much healthier than modern breeds.
And yes she must have had good socialization and activity so she's not being anxious but eager to learn new things. Though obviously nail clipping wsa an old thing that she previously decided wasn't for her, haha
@@Iflie I just commented this to someone else lol ancient breeds are extremely healthy dogs. It's so sad to see the newer breeds and the common health issues they have, being labeled normal. Valhunds and spitz are phenomenal breeds of dogs with impeccable health.
@@aaronndaniperttu1111 Yeah a working dog should never have bad hips that are so common now. I'm glad cats have mostly escaped human meddling. But if your cat has visible breed in them it still seems to give them a shorter lifespan and they call them "seniors" at 8 when they can life to 19 or more normally.
@@Iflie my little dog is mix of a bunch of different breeds. And when she turned 10, she was labeled as a senior dog. I was a tad dumbfounded, as each of her breeds tend to live upwards of 16 years. And my little sweet bean feral kitty, that adopted us...was labeled a senior when she turned 8 this past year. She's healthy as a horse! Living her best life as a farm kitty. Definitely not a senior by any means
Your first step in the grooming process from now on should be showing this clip to all the animals you groom, so that they see both the process and how they should react to it. Uma is a star.
"Now listen. When a german sherpard and a corgi loves eachother very much...." xD She is crazy sweet, i never even knew about this breed! The way her fur is around her mouth it looks like a permanent polite smile!!
The Valhund is one of the ancestors of the Pembroke Corgi, and they have similar tail situations.
I THOUGHT her breed looked familiar!! Vallies, as I call them, are definitely a rare breed for sure, & I myself have yet to meet one, but Uma is a stunning Vallie for sure ☺️
As a swedish vallhund owner, thank you so much for this! We love seeing our beloved breed get some representation and information out here! It should be noted that this breed is definitely more bred on their health and function more than their looks, so there's so many variations of them out there, and people often questioning the tailless-ness of them (they're born like that!), as docking tails is illegal in Scandinavia. And they are SO VOCAL, guys!! Talking so much, having their language dubbed "Argle Bargle" by the breed community. I love chatting with my vallhund.
My friend has a Swedish Valhund!! It's called Fenrir 🥰 It's definitely a working dog. He's training him for search and rescue! He's an absolutely wonderful dog, and my friend has dedicated his life to his training and care ❤
they cute & smol 😄
Cool name for a Viking-Dog!
@@PK-rr2tx Named after the mythical God-eating giant wolf.
She’s so pretty and smart. I love her expressions. When she’s trying out each activity, she absorbs the experience trying to decide if she likes It or not.
Honestly, watching her experience the bath reminded me of the video posted about the "farm dog's first bath". Because of how intelligent the dog was, it understood that it wasn't in any danger but actually liked getting bathed!
What a super little dog, I really thought she was a German Shepherd/Corgi mix! Gorgeous cute puppy ❤❤❤❤
Uma is definitely "unforgettable". Thank you for posting.
She’s having a lot of fun there for sure! You got such a way with dogs your name is deserved!
The zoom in on her face at around 2:15! 😂 She’s so cute and well mannered.
what a precious bean!! i'm from finland so i love it whenever nordic breeds appear on your channel hehe 🥰
My brother has Finish Spitz. Absolutely amazing breed of dog!!
I have never heard or seen this breed. She is the cutest thing i have seen in a long time and so well behaved. She is just perfect.
Been AKC registered 2007, are in herding group
I have a Swedish valhund and I got him in 2012 he's still alive and kicking I hope he lives another 10 to 20 more years
Uma was doing brilliantly well for her 1st grooming session. So well that you cannot help but adore Uma's cuteness while she was being groomed. I have to give Uma's owners credit because they done an extraordinary job of training Uma to be very well-behaved.
Never saw this breaed and it's really impressed how muscular she is despite her size. She has really strong legs
some breeds with the short legs look kinda flimsy, like their legs are real skinny but this breed’s legs are thick! she seems quite powerful lol
Omg I love this little doggo. Not only is Uma gorgeous, she's so well-tempered, expressive, intelligent, and fun.
Uma you're adorable. Sweet fluffy girl was a little nervous, but handled it all like a pro. She's so cute.❤
I actually sometimes get emotional when watching the way you interact with dogs and how they respond to you and you to them. We have two dogs and they are family and have had others who were also family and have now gone on. What makes this channel such a joy I think is that there is love involved.
I live in Sweden, and this breed is even rare here!! I see them now and then and it's always super fun!! I've never met one that isn't social, as people who get them love taking them out and they are normally working on something like scent tracking!! I have seen very few that is so red! 0_0 Most I know are very gray, so she is sooo cute!
I really like this breed and if i had to own any of the smaller size breeds i'd go for this one. We call them Västgötaspets here in Sweden.. A friend of mine's family used to peddle these dogs. had a kennel. My review: Will survive and enjoy extended trips in the wilds and are adorable & fun doggies. great at herding a flock of kids. Usually has a pleasant temperament. 9/10 small doggie score.

How could you not fall in love with her, just looking at her face is so darn adorable. The owners have done a wonderful job training her, it must be all that love they give her.
The SIGH of relief I did realizing that this dog just has a resemblance to German Shepherds rather than being a mini sized one was immense. Uma's a VERY good girl and very sweet
Same here😮😮
That's a cool and compact little breed. It makes perfect sense why they're used for herding. 🐕
My Swedish vallhund strongly approves of this video. I've actually had people ask me if she's a mix between German Shepherd and Corgi even though my girl is more gray-toned 😃
Same here. My girl's getting up in years but she's so sweet she gets on with everybody and everything she meets.
This is the first time I've seen this dog and I honestly thought "FFS another designer dog idiot and who bred a corgi and gs?" The jokes on me😆 So cute but seriously glad that these little pupperonies won't be plagued by health problems that the designer dogs are riddled with. Absolutely a cute dog❤️
@@the_phuckery_is_real7252 Vallhunds are very healthy little dogs. Jess is 14 years old and she still has a ton of energy and loves to play and eat. She also still tries to race me up the stairs.
I'm curious what their personalities are like? I've found some herding breeds to be more stubborn and others to be more cooperative, and I wonder how these fall.
@@SavagePassion666 most ancient breeds are extremely healthy dogs. Too many of the newer breeds were bred first for their looks. By than, all the "normal" health issues were labeled as normal, and it really sucks! For instance kangals and dogo argentines and a ton of the ancient Asian breeds, are incredibly healthy dogs compared to the newer ones. I'm obsessed with these dogs lol amd the finish spitz! Amazing pups
This reminds me so much of my family's own dog, Jazza!
She was a Swedish Vallhund with a similar brown-blonde coat, albeit a tad brighter. My family took her in when she was a year old and we all loved her to bits!
She sadly passed away a year ago after twelve years. She was a wonderful dog who was extremely social and communicative, and I can tell that Uma's gotten just as much- if not more- love and care in her life!
Thank you for sharing Uma with us!
Oh my good god. What an absolute cutie!!! German Shepherds are my favorite breed so this was a treat!
Have no connection to GSD. only connection is are herding dogs, & were around during Viking days.
@@Memow-pk1ng Yes, we watched the video. But aesthetics wise, even the video acknowledged that this breed holds strong resemblances. OP didn't say they were the same breed. I thought it was obviously just the love for a matching aesthetic.
@Memow-pk1ng I never said they did. I said I love GSD so this was a treat to watch what looks like a smaller shepherd
I can't get over how adorable she is! I've never seen one before!
I just adopted a Swedish Vallhund mix from the SPCA in Richmond BC, she was 5 weeks old found abandoned with her mother, She is such a joy and I love her so much. Her personality is very much a Vallhund unfortunately father is unknown but she is sweet tempered, adorable and very cute!
I can tell the cameraman really loved this sweet girl from all the great closeup shots he got ❤
I love vallhunds! I knew she was one the moment you said she wasn’t a corgi mix, I love the Swedish vallhund they’re so cute!
What I admire about you is if a dog is struggling, you put the time in to show the owners to reduce future stress. New dogs have extra time to encourage positive reinforcement.
I know that if the camera wasn't there, you would do exactly the same. You deserve the fame.
Thank you for introducing us to this adorable breed! I've never heard of the Swedish Vallhund. With all the deshedding products, though, she may be little but she's still a "German Shedder Dog", haha. What a sweet puppy!
I have four German Shepherd’s. They are all females and they all Harvard smart. I wish I could take them to you tomorrow to get them a bath. I do it myself but when I see your videos, I wish so much you lived by us in Texas.❤
I would be afraid of being outsmarted AND outnumbered! :D
Living in Sweden, I've encountered this breed before, though they are rare. It's truly a wonderful dog.
Wow. As on owner of a border collie and a husky, both working breeds, I am in total envy!!! So calm and alert. Simply fabulous!
That’s a gorgeous dog. Like Vanessa and I’m sure many others here, I’d never heard of or ever seen this breed before.
Simply beautiful!
You're right about that! UMA, however, is UNFORGETTABLE! ❤❤❤ I think everyone just fell in love with her.😊
What an awesome, sweet, playful dog. She doesn't look like she should exist. That's just because I'm in the US, where we clearly don't see these dogs. She looks like she's fully grown already, because she handles herself with a certain degree of maturity. She also reminds me of a corgi, German Shepherd and Dachshund. Perhaps those who don't have room for a German Shepherd, but have time and energy to devote to training and exercising should consider a dog like this. Thank y'all for sharing her.
She lives in the US! There are about 950 in the states.
@@layplum Considering how many dogs there are in the US overall, 950 isn't that many. In the part of the country I Live in, chihuahuas and pit bulls and various mixes are the most popular.

One of the points I automatically look for in dog behavior is how gentle they are when taking treats from a hand. Bonus points are always awarded for excellent fang-eye coordination~

Like some other things from Sweden that com in smal sizes and you have to work on them or work out whit it... like IKEA and spotify!
In Sweden we call them yard dogs, meaning that they work around the yard or farm, like hearding, guarding and hunting. My friend have 2 of them and they are so sweet giving you a welcoming bark when you arrive and are the coolest ever, just a very calm dog if you are willing to exercise them a lot.
So freaking cute!!
Uma reminds me so much of our Swedish Vallhund Bentley, who sadly passed away earlier this year. Thanks for this, even if it did make me a little teary-eyed.
What a freaking cutie! As said she really does look like a tiny German shepherd/corgi mix. Which are 2 of my favorite breeds. I've never heard of this breed but I think I might be in puppy love. 😍

I wanted to tell you, your videos are the best on TH-cam. If I am feeling down, watching your short or regular video brings a smile and light up the mood.
Uma/Puma is such a well behaved dog, we all fall in love from the moment she entered, her puffed face. She is just adorable. Thank you for providing details about her breed.
First time for me seeing a Swedish Vallhund as well. I love her! Me and my cousin played with a neighborhood stray German Shepherd when we were kids. I named her/him "Pepper" and that's when I fell in love with German Shepherds. This little dog looks like one, but much smaller. She is sweet!
What an unbelievable cutie. She’s so well behaved! Every angle is her good angle
And ngl I let out the biggest sigh of relief when you said this breed of dog can be born without tails haha
