My name is Donald Beck. I'm the guitar player in this Hee Haw clip. I'm 75 now. I also play 5 string banjo and played on Dillards album on Foggy Mtn Breakdown as the 2nd banjo.
Hey Donald- I know you had mentioned to me in a reply that you had bought that 1927 raised head. Is it a mahogany style 4 and being a ‘27 does it have a no hole ring in it or the 40 hole ring? And also wondering if you still own that banjo today? Thanks Dean
@rbfour5 Dean, according to a list of serial numbers I found on the internet my banjo is a 1929. I'll get back to you when I get time to look at the tone ring. it's the banjo I played on the Rick Nelson Country Fever album. See his version of Salty Dog I was 18 years old and sat next to James Burton and Clarence White during all the 17 tracks we recorded at Gold Star in Hollywood
@@donaldbeck498 Donald- I found Country Fever on Apple Music AND your Banjo Revolution album (downloaded both!). Are you playing your raised head on your album- it sounds really good!
Douglas was my 1st banjo inspiration when I started banjo as a young feller. No has ever played such a hard driving, articulated and unique style as Douglas. 🤠
My name is Donald Beck and I'm playing the guitar on this cut. David Jackson is playing bass. I was one of the original members in the Dillard and Clark Expedition band playing mandolin. Roger Bush was not in the band and Billy Ray wasn't either.
Donald5string Hey Donald- loved your playing with the Expedition! What year was this performance on Hee- Haw? Doug was one of my banjo idols for sure. Thanks for sharing information with us!
+Donald5string Hello Donald, so you played the pedal steel on live in Amsterdam? Yesterday I walked across the Wiechman Hotel and thought about the album! keep on pickin'!
+roundrocktx Well, yes I did play the pedal steel on the live in Amsterdam album but at the time I was just beginning to learn to play the thing! A few years later I would have been really hot. Oh Well. On my way to India in 1977 I stopped in Amsterdam and stayed at the Hotel Wiechman and visited with the owners who we became good friends with when we stayed there with the whole Flying Burrito Bros band on the tour when we did 17 shows in Holland, Belgium, Denmark and last stop was opening a show for a Jimmy Hendrix film in London. Interesting times those were.
+rbfour5 The Hee Haw show was a Christmas show in 1969. Back when I was still a teenager, one night Rodney Dillard called me and said Douglas was too sick to do the shows that night at the Golden Bear club in Huntington Beach, CA. So they put Doug's buckskin shirt on me and I played all the shows that night with my 5-string. Johnny McEuen from the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band sat in the front row very jealous I'd say. But, I used to hang out at Doug's house and we'd play bluegrass hour after hour and I play alot like him and I knew every Dillard tune. I'm playing the second banjo on Foggy Mountain Breakdown on Doug's banjo album as well as all the dobro parts on the other songs.
+Donald5string Don, was Alan Munde playing with the Flying Burrito Bros when you were playing pedal steel? That is awesome! Are you doing anything musically these days? I had Doug's banjo albums years ago and I remember the twin banjo arrangement of FMB. Were you playing an arch top as well- it does not sound like a flat head. Again, thanks for sharing some incredible history with us. Hope that you have a very Merry Christmas!
How can you not love this man with an infectious smile and picking skills beyond imagination ? Although some may disagree most likely the best ever ...in my opinion .
Don, you shouldn't have to announce your name. I'm in awe of all you wonderful musicians who've devoted their lives to their craft. I discovered The Dillards from here in the UK back in '71. Thanks for all the beautiful music.
well I'm only 4 years late in replying. The UK is my favorite place. I'm actually building a live steam train that you can ride on that is a model of a Manor class Grest Western locomotive. I enjoy the live Webcams from Grosmont and Goathland on the North Yorkshire Moors railway. I bought a set of Twist Trap practice pipes and am learning to play the bagpipes. Thanks for enjoying the music.
Doug Dillard...a favorite of Dave Scott(WFAW Radio)when looking for a music bed to play underneath a commercial he just recorded. This, Jan Klemmer & Weather Report.
true, that was a long time ago...early 70's. I don't recall another take...they only showed one song on the Hee Haw show. Can you tell that I was rather mad because they put me in back where I could hardly hear and put the cute girl up front. She was a recent girlfriend of Douglas and weaseled her way into the band. I actually quit because of her. Douglas and I are still friends and I call him now and then where he lives in Nashville...he just turned 75 I think.
You know, it'd be great if this video could be found when you search Doug Dillard. As it is, you have to search pretty hard for it, and I'm sure a lot of Doug's fans would love to see him at this time in his life. Just a thought...
I'm glad Dillard knew what was best . I just returned from listening to Clark and couldnt figure out the fascination decent folks had with his brand of music.
So this looks like it was being performed on Hee Haw or something. Anyone know if Doug Dillard was still part of the Dillards band that performed on The Andy Griffith Show at this time or just part of his own group the Expedition? And who’s the girl? This was extra good.
No one seems to remember her name. She was a new girlfriend of Doug's and he just put her in the band. She caused some friction in the band. Must not have lasted too long. It's not Donna Washburn that was the band before her.
yes, just one song. I was on hee haw in 1974 playing banjo in the Brush Arbor band. They danced the pigs in front of my solo! But the band leaders had a falling out with the lead singer and have made the video unavailable.

Leon Wilkeson sent me here, this is awesome. RIP Mr. Dillard
I met Leon at a late night party in Jacksonville, FL in the early '80s. He's buried in the same cemetery as one of my grandmothers.

I didn’t realize Byron had died. Absolutely one of the best ever. You can tell this was early in his bluegrass education.
Rest In Peace fiddling man.
No one made it ring like Doug!
same here -- RIP Douglas, you were the best.

That Bella Voce he's playing sounds as awesome as it looks. Doug Dillard is the MAN!

Yep, him and Earl.
Don, you are truely a multi-instrumental person, every album I find you on, you seem to be playing a different musical instrument!
now I'm learning the bagpipes !
OK so HOLY SHIT
I think that song is Hickory Holler, from Backporch Bluegrass (The Dillards)
My boy sure turnt out a good ‘un didn’t he?
Gene Clark brought me here like Gene The Dillards are from Missouri
Is that Byron Berline on fiddle?
@kkiilljjooy Definitely. Post the other performance!
