They really don't have a bad record but this record is what made me love them. To open a record with a song Like 6:00 then to go even further with a track Like Innocence Faded with that 80s Rush Red Barrecheta vibe to it... everything in Between Lie, Voices, then closing the album with Space Dye Vest.. a true artistic masterpiece
@@LA.Guitar it's funny when people try saying he's using that as an excuse. Food poisoning causes throwing up, throwing up causes pressure, pressure causes things to rupture including your vocal cords. I don't understand how people are that fucking stupid not to see that, LOL
All due respect to Derek Sherinian and Jordan Rudess who are all excellent keyboard players but in my opinion Kevin Moore helped shape and create the sound that we would come to know Dream Theater for, it's such a shame that he left the band during the Awake recording sessions but for me those first three albums was some of his best work ever with them in terms of playing and composing.
Same studio "And Justice For All" and the Black album were recorded. They were picking up leftover vibes there because this has always been their best album to me.
I actually enjoy Kevin Moore's music much more than Dream Theater. I recommend Memory Hole, You Go Now, and Shine. Check out Office of Strategic Influence for a more electrometal sound. It's pretty awesome.
Jordan's first tone following Petrucci's solo in "This dying soul" as well as in "In the Name of God" mid section and "The test that stumped them all" is becoming a very repetitive sound for him to use. I prefer the pure piano involved with the metal, like in "Stream of Consciousness" (after Petrucci shreds), in the beginning of "Six Degrees" or at the end of ToT. The effect per se is not bad, but its constant usage sometimes causes a very exhausting experience to the listener.
Po Tato a little bit. He wasn’t as interested in writing music and really only cared about writing lyrics. A lot of Kevin’s lyrics were about his issues at the time. 6:00 and Lie i believe are about him wanting to leave and Space Dye vest is about his relationship ending
Awake is only right below Images and Words as probably the second of most influential metal albums of the 90s, or ever for that matter. That record got me through high school.
using string lubricant to keep the slides fluent i think cuz hes using an ebow thats my guess anyways im sure its not entirely necessary but it rules out any chance of getting stuck on the string whilst sliding
how can this 3 minute piece be the only footage of the awake recording sessions?! I&W is older and have more than 1 hr of footage. Come on Mike, check your achives and give us more, please!
so much footage lying around in mike's basement... and yeah the ending was sorrowfull. And petrucci falling lol, with mike grabbing his like "oh crap he's going down" :D
Not sure if it was because of that dark phase with Kevin or what, but there is very little BTS material from Awake, which is a shame. I so wish there was more about rehearsals, composition, recording... This album is THE masterpiece.
Well, my ears are hearing something much different to yours :) Sherinian is an AWESOME keyboardist, but mainly his solo material. His work with DT was great, don't get me wrong, but Moore and Rudess are much more suited to the band. And while Rudess is clearly the most talented of the three, Moore brought a balancing act to DT which has been lacking in their last 3 or 4 albums.
Rudess does lead and rhythm. Anything anyone plays in the band, he can play on keyboard. He is the most experienced compared to Moore and Sherinian. He has perfect pitch (able to hear any tone and sing it or name it without reference)
I get your point. But you say Kevin and Derek knew when to take the keys off a heavy song... I'd say that Jordan dares to involve keys in it. He's far from showing off - in that sense, JP is the most explicit. For those guys, solos are just a matter of beauty in the songs, and not a boasting factor. I love what Kevin did with DT, but Jordan is way ahead in every aspect. Of course, I'm talking about compared work, but even here preferences may vary.
I think some guys really like Kevin Moore... way "more" than DT... that is called "being a Moore fan" no a "DT fan". In the end, it almost seems like he's the victim and the remaining four are the bad guys... think it over, because if you can see what Kevin brought to the band, a lot of guys can also see what Rudess did... not just me.
Best DT album ever!
second best, first is scenes from a memory
1st I&W 2nd Awake and the rest I'm not interested in.
I was just thinking the same. I'd have loved to see their style developing this way
1000fantomas how can you not like scenes? I really think you gotta give it another look, it’s one of the best albums ever imo
Scenes is best, then Images, then Octavarium, then the rest.
Awake has the best vocals of DT to date.
Still
six degrees is better vocals
@@feralkitty9378it's close, shows the diversity James has. But Awake is tad better imo
Ya the songwriting alone makes it better @@TheDarkEternalKnight07

i think this is the album where LaBrie's voice is really agressive. I like him singing like that in this album :D
ikr? Caught in a web and The mirror really show that.
Marcos Recio Also Take the Time!
Immediately after these recording sessions he got ill on vacation and ruptured his vocals chords. He’s never sung the same since

Truly a sad loss. Kevin provided the dark undertones and mystique that the band never quite got back.
Yeh, plus I think he was possibly the best songwriter in the band also
Man do I miss Moore!!
sheer genius he is!
incredible album along with Images and Words
even the titles have to do with each other
...contrast...=)
Kevin Moore
Yeah, his departure was a bad thing for Dream Theater. :(
Gustavo Fuentes Reyes I agree... Kevin Moore was awesome!
AlissonTrash Santana genius
Best Dream Theater album! I would say Scenes from a Memory comes in a close second.
This album has the best song DT has ever recorded: Scarred.
Scarred is number one my favourite song of all song Dream Theater
Trully yesss!
The phrase ''I'm inspired and Content'' at the end and the final musical part/resolution is just one of a kind.
Originally was the album opener.
Octavarium is definitely the best dt song
i love dark mysterious atmosphere on this album

Followed DT from the beginning, and Awake will always be my favorite album. Has a dark beauty all its own.
Damnit! Is there any more footage of the making of the album or is this it? I want to see the whole process!
Same studio "And Justice For All" and the Black album were recorded. They were picking up leftover vibes there because this has always been their best album to me.

Kevin was the fog/dry ice side of DT. They lost their theatrics when he left.
I'm here for nostalgic reason, the last original DT ingredients....
this si actually the best keyboard work from dt!
I love Awake... Hard to say, but maybe my fave by DT. Thanks for all your Uploads man!
my first DT album.still very special and to me .perfect prog-metal.
Jordan's first tone following Petrucci's solo in "This dying soul" as well as in "In the Name of God" mid section and "The test that stumped them all" is becoming a very repetitive sound for him to use. wonder how awkward could've been working in studio with Kevin back then, did they saw coming his departure?
Po Tato a little bit. He wasn’t as interested in writing music and really only cared about writing lyrics. A lot of Kevin’s lyrics were about his issues at the time. 6:00 and Lie i believe are about him wanting to leave and Space Dye vest is about his relationship ending
I'm going to have to agree. I thoroughly enjoyed this album more than the rest.
Petrucci really feel desperate when Kevin left....
Awake is only right below Images and Words as probably the second of most influential metal albums of the 90s, or ever for that matter. That record got me through high school.
Same here
The part at 2:15...damn...really struck somehting with me. I dunno why.
absolutely. if i could have one wish, id ask for the talent of ANY of these guys on this album.
best dream theater album by far!!!! bring back kevin!! Petrucci grow your hair long again!!
I miss kevin.
This is my favorite DT album been listening to it for 17 years
Based
@@sameash3153 so funny you commented on this bc I started listening to it again everyday for the last week, still my favorite DT album.
Well, you have your favorite and the rest of us have ours.
My favorite: Metropolis part 2: Scenes from a Memory.
the best dt album hands down
this album is a classic
Best Dream Theater album.
using string lubricant to keep the slides fluent i think cuz hes using an ebow thats my guess anyways im sure its not entirely necessary but it rules out any chance of getting stuck on the string whilst sliding
Awake,I complétele changed my musical direction.
myung has the silkiest hair o-O

Cool mixing desk Mexican Wave thingy
What is that thing called that JP uses in his right hand at 1:40 for Space Dye West?
EBow?
Does anybody know where I can find this on VHS or dvd? Are there any left?
From the ''5 years in a lifetime'' video, contains footage from Images and words, Awake, A Change of Seasons, and Falling Into Infinity eras.
The Best Album
it was a pity that kevin left the band
1:35 song name, pls?
chuckgobbo space dye vest
0:34 As a band we became a lot tighter
Meanwhile Kev leaving the band
thier most prog metal album ever!
what was being sprayed on petrucci's hand when he was playing space dye vest?
Tone Finger-Ease String Lubricant Spray
you can find that on the "live in Tokyo 1993" dvd
Damn this was uploaded a long time ago
Not sure if it was because of that dark phase with Kevin or what, but there is very little BTS material from Awake, which is a shame. I so wish there was more about rehearsals, composition, recording... This album is THE masterpiece.
2:00 sad story :(
One On One studios, Los Angeles. Same studio were Metallica recorded the Black Album. :) Sweet!
John looks like RALPH SALATI from DESTRAGE at 1:53
what's the name of the gadget that JP is using at 1:36? Please, someone tell me!
He's using an Ebow
That´s an E-bow. It provides infinite sustain.
Eric Vera sustainer
its called "finger ease" its a guitar string Lubricant
Who is filming?
Most of times was Mike Portnoy
Kevin is like wow what does it feel like to make a mistake
Haha well he is a doctor now so no mistakes allowed.
0:22 Awesome
so how is john petrucci getting infinite sustain in that line on his guitar?
15years ago
moores not a founding member, it was petrucci myung and portnoy , and then they got moore on keyboards afterwards.
Kevin, John'ın gitarına ne sıkıyor?
Well, my ears are hearing something much different to yours :)

I agree with that; pure piano sounds better, and is less tiring.
the end seems sorrowful
...
Derek was good, but Kevin was CLEARLY better.
Rudess does lead and rhythm. Anything anyone plays in the band, he can play on keyboard. He is the most experienced compared to Moore and Sherinian. He has perfect pitch (able to hear any tone and sing it or name it without reference)
truly JP were more happier here
Well his father was alive back then, he died in 1996.

wow thats quite ridiculous

Seriously.
aw I hate those shirts JP is wearing when he falls!!11 fucking gay! haha does not do him justice!
bullshit. jordan rudess has plenty of feeling. kevin was classic. that's it...
Worse
I honestly cant stand awake. the vocals are so tryhard metallica (arms flame shield)
I hear no Metallica influenced vocals on this album whatsoever. What are you smoking, can I try some?
One On One studios, Los Angeles. Same studio were Metallica recorded the Black Album. :) Sweet!
I thought that studio looked familiar.
