Ladies and Gentleman, you know him; you love him; you've seen him on stage with us. And now here it is an official *new* member of Dream Theater, Mr Mike Portnoy!
The magic and genius that was present in this lineup at this stage in their career and in the making of this album appears so unique. This is by far, the band's landmark masterpiece. As a longtime fan, I'm disappointed in the way things played out. But such is life...
@@RodniDemental just, shut up dud. Nobody wants to hear that. Dream Theater was definitively better back then, we all fans know it, that doesn't mean they are bad now. But the spirit of the band was at its pick back then, that's all, we missed that.
@@Drcalatayud Heh. That old comment does come across a bit arrogant but so might this one.. Music taste is always subjective; what we've already experienced will influence what we prefer. What we expect affects what surprises us.. And it's not like it settles there because previous tastes can change as we gain more reference to what we prefer. Of course you feel the way you do and find those who agree with you, I don't try to take that away from them but made a suggestion to what I believed at the time. Eg. alternative perspective; those that discover songs and pieces out of order or with no reference to albums or time periods - The more one listens to an artist, the more one forms a narrative about their progression as it's experienced.
+Robo9400 youre right, the band wanted to go on but he didnt let them go, they just started looking for a replacement, and when portnoy realized he wanted to come back it was too late... i dont think there were any argument at all... just a big chain of misunderstansing and lack of comunication...
@@DTBootlegs I was just reading your comments, and I think you're missing some important point : Myung, such as Petrucci and Portnoy, is a former member. So DT is kind of his baby too. But when did myung put his money on the table to produce an album ? JP and MP risked everything for the band, on SFAM era, so MP might be a "control freak" when it's your money on the table, things have to be the way yo want them to be. By the way, DT seems to be your favorite band, so it is for me, let me ask you that : when did myung or JP, took a camera to bring exclusive inside content for the fans ? No one cares about the fans more than Portnoy. Then when you say Portnoy is not an easy guy to work with... Why did he make several album with the same guys ? I'm thinking about Neal Morse or Billy Sheehan for example. He might not be the monster under the bed, but some people, for some reason, wants us to believe it
My hunch has always been that MP was dissatisfied with the decline of James voice during live performances. I don't think MP and James were ever the closest to begin with, and MP's OCD ways probably wanted things to sound better live. No disrespect to MP or James, love both.
@@DTBootlegs I see, yeah true it didn't alone lead to him leaving. I think there was at least a pinch of drama though at one point. In a recent interview, James said that the food poisoning incident caused friction between him and Mike over the 8-10 years after he got sick. He said they "started butting heads" and that everyone else in the band was behind him 100% besides Mike. I don't know if this was a direct quote from Mike or just James' just paraphrasing, but he said Mike "was like, Hey man, you used to be this f**kin’ world-class singer, what’s going on?" It's definitely not impossible that it was at least part of why he left. I'm sure James' decline started to weigh on Mike at least to a small extent, mainly because of MP's personality type.
I shall never EVER get tired of the section presenting Jordan Rudess. It was through this very segment of video (from 4:26 to 5:46) that was circling p2p networks back then (KaZaA I think it was) that I came to know about Jordan Rudess 10 years ago. Glad to have been a fan since then.
It is their greatest masterpiece. And this location is like MINUTS from me. How cool that they recorded my all-time favorite album just minutes from me?
Wow. This was the first album I heard form them, and when it was new, none the less (and I was barely a knee high at the time), and watching this now feels like watching old VHS tapes of my family around Christmas or something.
After seeing this a year ago I started listening to marillion and instantly fell in love because now I Hear the marillion influence in all dream theater work
LaBrie is the singer. That usually comes last, unless the singer also plays instruments. Rush, one of the tightest bands in history, also does something similar: usually two of them are busy while the other one takes a break. It's how it is; keeps them from burning out.
This video is shot May 12, 1999. I find it interesting that Portnoy says "Jordan as you know, did 2 incredible Liquid Tension Experiment Albums with us" Liquid Tension Experiment 2 - Released on June 15, 1999. Perhaps since it was for the Italian Fan Club, it would be seen after the release of LTE 2. But at the time, the 2nd album had stilll not been released.
From left to right, the "inspiration corner" albums are: Tommy by The Who; The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway by Genesis; Amused to Death by Roger Waters; OK Computer by Radiohead; Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band; Misplaced Childhood by Marillion; The Wall by Pink Floyd; and The Final Cut by Pink Floyd. All of them are concept albums, with the exception of OK Computer (however, in some aspects it may be considered a concept album as well.)
For those who are wondering where this video is taken from, it was originally included in the International Fan Club 1999 Christmas CD, also known as Cleaning Out The Closet.
Not for me, I've tried countless times to write lyrics to complex music, and have found that it's better if I write music to complex lyrics. Music is more flexible than lyrics are, especially lyrics that are meant to tell a specific story like those of a musical or a concept album like this. So that they wrote the lyrics last utterly amazes me.

And plus to actually end the world Myung would have to actually be heard and appreciated in the mix, so I think we're safe haha. I love Myung, but he needs more volume in the tracks let me tell you.
Every time I watch this and hear Petrucci's acoustic part, I HAVE to go back and listen to Finally Free. This is one of the best albums I have ever heard... period.
Myung is speaking, Rudess has actual hair and Portnoy is trolling LaBrie for being a Canadian xD What kind of twisted parallel universe is this?
Theater of Dreams, making of Memories from a Scene

"Hey there"
"See ya"
