It's cool enough to imagine walking into your local Dodge dealer and ordering up a brand-new 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T complete with a 425 HP 426 Hemi under the hood, but when the car was bought at Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge in Chicago, the whole experience is even cooler. Mr. Norm Krauss was all about selling high performance, and his legendary Dodge dealer not only sold these bad machines, but they also modified, tuned, and raced 'em themselves! This particular car from the Brothers Collection is the stuff of legends... triple black, 426 Hemi, pistol-grip 4-speed, Super Trak Pak 4.10:1 Dana 60 rear, and a bill of sale from Grand Spaulding. Too cool.

I have a 1970 hemi Challenger RT, that was purchased at Grand Spalding Dodge. The guy who bought the car, traded in a 1969 Chevelle 454. I did not know that when I bought the car. I've had since 1984. And I'll never sell it.

Don't blame you. I'd never sell it either. Or I'd sell it and buy a 70-71 440 or 440+6 Challenger/Cuda and still have a shit ton of money left. Probably enough to buy another car or two lol...maybe a 68 Charger R/T 440-4 speed and/or a 69 1/2 A12 Roadrunner. But I'm sure there's sentimental value there too for you having owned it for that long

to me the beginning rev sequence sounds like the start of puff the magic dragon. lol, ahhh hemi. I remember getting off the highway and at the bottom of the off ramp in front of me,was a red 70 or 71 big block Challenger R/T just blub blub blubbing away with some lumpy crazy cam in it.when it took off onto the street he had to give it a little throttle to break into the traffic, without even meaning to, lit up both rear tires in a lovely dual strip of posi traction action, influenced by the Dana underneath and who knows what under the hood. this was in the mid 80s when dinosaurs still roamed the streets on a daily basis. I myself at the time was in a 66 440 Dodge Coronet. truly wonderful days. thanks again guys! ☆☆☆
I remember as a teenager Listening to W.L.S. AM.Radio out of Chicago and on the weekend Larry Lujack talking about Mr.Norms Grand Spalding Dodge . And Smoking US.30 Drag Strip (Where The Great Ones Run Run) . And Some times they would talk about Mr. Norms Cars Raceing There.

Definitely one of my favorite cars in the collection. Looks sinister in black/black with the steelies and dog dish caps. A 71 Hemi Challenger is definitely my favorite pony car ever made. Love the 70-71 HemiCuda too but the Challenger R/T was just a hair more upscale than the Cuda was👍👍

I had a high school friend that bought a 1971 Challenger RT SE with the 440 he had it for less than a week. We went out dragging I had a 1971 Chevelle and we both stomped on them at about 20 mph and he lost control, I watched the RT cross 3 lanes of traffic hit a gas meter and then crash into the corner of a brick wall. I still remember looking back and seeing the rear of the car jump up about two feet when it hit that wall.. Luckily no on was hurt but the RT was totaled it was such a bad ass car, to bad inexperienced driver with way to much HP..

TheElectronMan Lol that's why Insurance rates for High performance cars like Muscle cars went up if your 18 and want A V8 with something like a 440 or at a young age which the muscle car market was marketed Insurance companies took notice of youngsters racing and crashing them.

When well you guys do reviews for the 72-74 Challengers and cudas Chargers Cutlass gtx sebring those cars are still important in American muscle history.
Ever since watching "Vanishing Point" as a kid, I knew I had to own a Challenger and in 2000 I bought a, running, 1973 blue on blue with a 318/727 for $1,200 from a junkyard. After a transmission rebuild, this car was a beast! I used it as a daily driver and fixed things as I went along. About five years into owning it, I got rear-ended by an uninsured driver and the frame was broken. I didn't have the money to fix it and sold it. I really miss that car!

I know what you mean. My 4th Challenger was a 73 - 340 / pistol grip 4 speed. Bought it in Sept of 1980 with 63K original miles. Fast forward to 1999. Had already rebuilt the front end twice and was on my 3rd motor. Which was a 1968 340 standard bore. On Nov 1999 someone ran a red light and T-boned me on the drivers side. The car was totaled and almost totaled me. I don't remember the accident. Woke up in ICU with broken ribs and a puncture lung. 12 days in the hospital with 6 days in ICU. The car had over 300K miles. It was my daily driver. Sure do miss that car. That car and I were best friends.
I still shed a tear when I think of that car. Doing it now. LOL

That's why I've always loved Mopar. They make big beastly cars with huge engines that put out massive amounts of horsepower and torque. Those things are like rockets down the line. For example, one of the biggest Mustang engines I've ever heard of is a 429, well I've seen a Charger with a 528 cu. in. engine. 528! That's almost 100 cu. in. more than the Mustang lol.

My buddy has a 1970. Black, shaker hood nasty power ride. God I love the cars from that time. I have a 1970 Ford Torino Drop top GT 302 Scoop Hood GT Hideaway headlights 14 inch tiers with a rear end that wins.
I'd love to have a couple of the cars I let slip through my fingers now. Even my old '67 Tempest was an awesome car. Yeah, they handled like crap compared to cars nowadays, but they're classics in every sense of the word.
My youngest daughter is crazy over '67 Impala's now since she's started watching "Supernatural" and wants one for her first car. Little does she realize that a clean '67 is probably a lot more expensive than getting her a new Subaru and is a lot harder to drive too. Plus, I'd always be borrowing it. :D

My favorite car, well 2nd 65 Chevelle SS Z16 is pretty awesome.
Interesting that this is a 1971 model. Growing up in California, for us the performance car era essentially ended in 1970 because in 71 the compression ratios dropped, cams got milder, smog equipment increased. Horsepower dropped in all cars.
not always true.some HP mopars and other brands slipped through . 71's were already in production when restrictions came into effect.

i was always under the impression that the 440 non hemi had better performance.. like 0-60 and quarter mile times??? Did one outsell the other?
It's widely argued which engine performed better. For the most part, people agree that the 440 six pack performed better on a day to day basis. It required less tuning and less maintenance. The Hemi was temperamental, but when you got it right, it ran better and faster. The Hemi also is better at a higher rev range, so the 440 may have been better just going around town, etc. The 440 outsold the Hemi by a long shot.

Only thing I would say is day to day the HEMI was faster unless you did a quick city stoplight to stoplight run.
The Hemi was temperamental. It required you to love cars and keep it tuned. Then again so did my 6 bbl.
The Hemi's needed to be played with before running them. Alot of owners did not know or want to or didn't know how. If you got the tune down or took it to someone who knew Hemi's, you were pushing 525 Hp and unbelievable torque.
The Hemi would catch the 440 at half track or a bit before and pull 4 or 5 cars on 440s.
The Hemi's that had the ,410 Dana or torqeflight and shiftkit (hughes)
Or 4 speed with pistol grip would get more on the 440.
Joe Oldham dissed the Hemi and Ford's Boss 429 in his book. Did his views have merrit, or did he somehow have a chip on his shoulder?

Having owned a 1970 Hemi RT/SE AT back in the early 1980s this was not the best performing MOPAR, in factory trim. It was nose heavy and HEMIs would often bog at the traffic light, just when you were up against the competition. This was due to the poor fuel distribution of the 2 4 barrel setup. With about 10 mpg it was not a daily driver, when gas prices increased dramatically.
Of all the MOPARs I owned the Challenger 440 6 pack MT was the most fun. It could beat the HEMI off the line, no bogging and with about 80lbs less weight over the front it handled better.
BTW HEMI cars were expensive back then. The MSRP of my 1970 Challenger was about $5500 ($36,000 in 2017 dollars). 10 years later a driver in good condition sold for about twice that, around $12,000.
$36,000 may sound cheap, but when you consider the safety and comfort features of present day MOPARs, along with a much improved fit and finish, it was not.
My Challenger Yellow Jacket had much better overall performance, fuel economy and comfort. Too bad the exhaust music was not as good.
cheap ass charger 440 whipped the fancy hemi in the street but no one like to hear it. hemies were sold with only 100 days guarantee and was expected to go to the track and get modified after 100 days ...
take a 1970 mustang with the 428 CJ or SCJ it was rated at only 335hp but whipped the e bodies....why? because it was simply a hopped up big car pusher engine. powerband easy to ride...idle like your uncle lincoln. most importantly it was 600 lbs ligther.
too bad the A bodies was an horrible platform for performance use. the front suspension was really bad even for chrysler's standard and was utterly undrivable when equipped with a big block. because chrysler never put the effort to make a real pony car platform under 110 inches wheelbase they were always deprived of a true ponycar and were forced on bigger rig (intermediate for the most part)

Quentin Raffensperger No, I don't think the performance was any different. Both were offered with the 440 Magnum, 426 Hemi & 440 Six Pack. Same horsepower and torque in both years. Since this is already my favorite Mopar muscle car ever, I'd get the 440 Magnum Six Pack, especially the new crate engine 440 Magnum pushing 530 naturally aspirated horsepower! This car with that engine? Dream car!
Actually the big-block high performance motors 440. 383, though detuned a little ( half-point comp.)per epa regs are rarer because much fewer were produced in 1971.70's are considered great 71's good and 72-74 's eh. Hope this helped

The person that bought my 1970 challenger RT only lived 5 miles from grand Spaulding Dodge. It's a 1970 challenger RT440 all matching numbers but was not bought at grand Spaulding Dodge but the guy's address was only 5 miles away 38000 original miles matching numbers engine matching numbers 2 mil sheets the original title with the original address of where he lived I am sure the car was bought somewhere in that vicinity The car went into storage in 1978 brought back out in 2018 It was a decal delete car

There is no way a good running 440 was faster than a good running Hemi.

I RAN A HEMI ROAD RUNNER THAT WAS
TUNED, STOCK BUT TUNED RIGHT BY MY GRANDFATHER ( MR HEMI,) AND ME . A GOOD TUNE
Slicks and a HEMI ROAD RUNNER TURNED MID 12s all day.fastest time totally STOCK except a pair of slicks it ran a 12.39.
I bought a ,69 A - 12. Road Runner 4406bbl, still have it along with my 1970 RT/SE 440 , Charger.
Have had them both for 37 yrs.
My Road Runner had a pistol grip 4 speed, 410 Dana and I specifically tuned the 6 bbl. There was/ is a way with a tiny drill bit to make sure all 6bbls open right away. That and the timing.
Anyhow the fastest it ever ran until I pulled the engine to save it was 12.90.
Tuned and tires like the HEMI.

@@soxfunny98 In a street car Id rather have a 440-4 barrel or a 440 Six Pack/6 BBL. In a car I planned on drag racing I would definitely rather have the 426 Hemi. You had to have some mechanical skills to even own a Hemi and they were tempremental and kinda hard to manage on the street from what I understand. But I've also heard the 1970-71 Street Hemi's were a little bit milder than the 1966-69 version because Chrysler engineers went to a hydraulic cam in 1970 for emissions reasons...replacing the more radical solid lifter design...and in turn making the 1970-71 Street Hemi's into a little bit smoother and more reliable street engine than their predecessors had been. Although they still carried the same 425 horsepower 490 lb/ft torque factory rating the 1966-69 Street Hemi was probably slightly more powerful than the 70-71 version...not by too much at all though. The idle of the 1970-71 Hemi sounded just as nasty as the earlier ones did. Pretty amazing sound from a hydraulic cam. The Pontiac 400 Ram Air IV had a really mean sound too for having a hydraulic cam as did the Mopar 440
I was super in love until he mentioned the replacement block, so not numbers matching. I'm actually bothered, not because its not numbers matching, but because I'm (probably) expecting an example of a full restoration to naturally include matching block and frame.
I'm sure that's just me being picky, so could someone get me ok with working with a restorer rebuild

Yes 1970 chevelle for a hemacuda dag nab it Boss what was u thinking....well Roscoe said it was a good idea...1970 454 LS6 came out in 70....no big deal om mopar too this car with the 340 4 speed rally red black RT stripes black gut pistol grip with floor console dual tips pan 15 magnums X 340 would have been my first car an the most well equipped an best looking next 71 cuda...but in the middle of a snow storm the car would not start an dad i think said mo way Jose i wasnt getting a 300hp 4 speed 3:55 posi trac hard top red challenger RT for my first car....1200 dollars anyone remember those days...anyone remember laughter i remember crying after i realized how stack it was no E bodys ever had tips an the splash pan too much doe is was 150 dollars sad part it was also rare it was without a vinyl roof which just makes it look a little sportier vinyl tops look good to but it would have nice to have one without because they were common in the north east....the L60 bias ply rear tires were slicks so it wasnt going home in the 7 inches of powder snow.....any way...i had 5 E body's after it and still miss that oh rally dash too i remember the wood grain that i loved....then when i drug dad out to see it i had know idea what a RT was versus a base 318 2barrel car so i was easily pushed off the car except for the 4 speed and its looks had me pissed on the ride home....i end up with a 72 barracuda same price with fake 340 stripes which i think now is pretty funny that was a great car though no magnum motor or clutch.....

Panel and trim fitting on this car is sloppy as hell! The two pieces of the split grill don't line up correctly either. Very poor fit and finish on this car.

I'm a big Mopar fan but even I'll admit that their build quality in those days was spotty at best as far as fit and finish. GM built the best overall cars back then but Mopar definitely built the best high performance drivelines...engines, transmissions, and rear ends
I disagree the Challenger is a pony car. By definition how can it be when its not compact at all (forget about the weight). The new Challenger is nearly as long as the last iteration of a Monte Carlo SS. And thats not a pony car. I realize it was all about marketing hype back in the 70's where Dodge entered the Challenger to conpete against the mustang and camaro sales. The Challenger yesterday and todays version are muscle cars. Not pony cars to me. But who am I. Anyways...congrats to Ford, Chevy and Dodge for keeping the retro looks and competition alive. Nah you're way off. A SHITLOAD of muscle cars from that era came with steel wheels and poverty caps. My brothers 69 Roadrunner was one of them. I've seen literally thousands of them over the years. Do Magnum 500's make the car any faster? Nope. Many people didn't care about all the useless cosmetic stuff like fancy wheels and spoilers that just raised the price of the car without adding any actual performance gain. And some people just didn't wanna draw any extra attention to themselves so they ordered plain looking cars that were still just as fast or faster because the less options they had the more lightweight they were
