That old-bird-aliendinosaur, is very representative the way te artist feels. We just enjoy his music, we steel a part of his soul, but when the glory days has passed away we just forget him. nobody can help him. congratulations.! great video and song btw.
You haven't lived until you've heard this album on acid. The relief that came from the transition between Lady Dada's Nightmare to such a light and floaty song like this was crazy.
Such a touching song: Wes Anderson could use it as one of his movie's ending song, I already see the main character reflecting on his life while he's sitting into a quiet park.
It's crazy how emotional this video made me. I felt really attached to the strange creature and actually cried. And I will never watch this video again.
Winston Leg-Thigh this was during a time when the record company they were with was limiting their ability to make the music they want regardless of the “fans”
@Winston Leg-Thigh He is literally talking about before they started to make experimental music. The label WAS limiting them but then they gave them some leeway. That is LITERALLY what he's been trying to say. You dont seem to understand you and him are talking about different time periods in their career jesus christ. You are literally reading this much into a joke im-
this is the point how in the life you know that its a cute creature instead of a terrible monster that deserved to be isolated and jailed by two guys in the middle of desert..?
What an amazing album! It took me on an amazing journey listening to this. Through space and time feeling so alive and living in the moment ready for what ever life throws at us. running through the dusty unfinished roads of an underground ghost town alone, but needing nothing more.
To me this song means: When you're doing everything "right," and are successful and have what people from the outside would call a good life....but still feel empty.
I always loved this music video. The feeling of resignation is very strong in this song and is represented very well in the way they tend to the dying creature.
This ghostly music video demonstrates the harsh reality of growing old. Our bodies slowly start to fail us. This video painted the picture beautifully. Nothing lasts forever. 🌟
I agree. People should judge the band because they don’t like the lyrics. P.S. Love how millennial‘s like yourself think judging means disapproving of. Judging something is fine and dandy and everyone does it all day everyday. but kids these days have been conditioned by their SJW teachers to believe tolerance means approval and judging means disapproval.
and here is another music video that I saw on MTV as a child, and that never left my mind. I am 20 years old now and I cannot express how happy I am to find it again :)))
Seems simular to the story of Osiris, who was split into pieces, and thrown out into the desert, and then Isis collected the parts of his body and put him back together
Berries2512 I guess anyone of us wasting even as little as a few seconds to write on an obviously unmeaningful and overcrowded platform such as the youtube comments section, must suffer from some form of existential anxiety...
This video is a great example of having a dream that you can't really explain or how it even got into your head to dream about it in the first place, waking up feeling upset over it but you don't really know why. One of those dreams that you never forget. Brilliant
You made my night I love you commenter I’m so happy in my soul right now because of you I hope you have a beautiful life because you truly made mine more beautiful through that wholesome comment (this isn’t sarcasm I mean it love)
Damn... I had party at my place and some random dude 50 yr old took my phone and let this song... i was like duuude... He said shut up, if you love mgmt, you are gonna be amazed. Everyone was charmed by it
I love this song. And for the most part, I like the music video. I like the ideas behind it, I like that it's in the desert, and I like the whole pace of the video. But I can't look at that mutant thing. It is terrifying. I feel bad for it, and it is truly sad, but gosh--I just can't look at that thing. I really wish they did a video for my favorite MGMT song, The Handshake, and had the whole video in black and white silhouettes. That would be unreal. Unrelated to this video: ANYONE WHOSE FAVORITE MGMT SONG IS THE HANDSHAKE, I ADORE YOU. The Handshake needs to get more praise. A truly inventive, chilling, trippy, distinctive, and classic MGMT track. When I think of MGMT, I think of this song. Hell--it is my favorite song of all time. Just a hair above Bohemian Rhapsody. But to conclude, this video is great, but do some tweaking to the horrid mutant thing. Make it cute. Not frightening. Thanks.
I loved the creature, it really does make you feel bad and gives a special additional flavour to the song, exactly what a music video is supposed to achieve. I wouldn't change it at all.
Wow what an underrated music video; this is a masterpiece! These guys should be in the film industry! His lyrics and their music is highly underrated. Their music helped me so much on my path of evolution. 🙏🏽 Blessings and love to these souls!
I am the creature and thank you MGMT for carrying me through this desert wasteland all these years to the promise land truly need a congratulations 👽🌈🙏🏼
I just interpret it as the creature represents their careers falling apart after the stress of having to live up to Oracular on fame that came at breakneck speeds. They're trying so hard to hold on to that feeling and success but ultimately just have to say "fuck it" and throw their fate to the sands of time and say "we gave it our all" (their expressions at the end)
I believe this creature represents ET's grandfather who came to earth also in the search for his grandson, but all is lost and this comment is dumb anyways
I love this song and I love this music video for some reason. It just is so odd and unique. The weird creatures and crazies remind me of the true diversity of the universe.

people live their lives waiting for tomorrow, as if they would not die. the are Always anxious and making plans for the future, as if the present was irrelevante, superfluous, just one more step to achieve the future. they spend their entire lives living this paradox, and finally when they die, well, nothing happens, the cycle just repeat itself, well congratulations!

I finally realised what this video is about.
The whole video is a metaphor for how society treats famous people. If you listen to the lyrics its all about how fame causes you to disassociate from everything around you.
The creature in the video is 'ugly' representing how we view stars as something to gawk at. In the video Andrew and Ben are essentially its fans or managers, just following it with little input. When the creature first loses its leg that represents how fame causes you to no longer be able to stand on your own two feet. As they continue walking it eventually loses its mouth representing how others now speak for you. Eventually the creature 'slips' and its a down hill spiral from there. The 'fans' or 'manager' dont do anything to help they just watch. Eventually the creature can't go on but they force it to by physically carrying it to its death- where it can only look at what its become. They clap at the end like the creatures whole existence and suffering was simply there to entertain them.
Because in the end all you need is one big congratulations.

Try not to seek validation from other people, it only makes your life feel more miserable ::/
People are more focused on what is wrong with you than what is right with you.

I thought he would look up one last time
One of my favourite songs of the 2010’s. I love the honesty of the lyrics.
Just gonna put this out there...
MGMT is probably the best thing since Pink Floyd.
Along with Tame Impala.
No other band's compare... Is there something wrong with me??
Brodzzzzz no. :)
Brodzzzzz Check out The Flaming Lips and Animal Collective for more modern Psych bands.
Brodzzzzz Yes. You don't listen to enough music.
Daniel Ramirez sounds like friend of the devil
Check out Temples, you might like then :)
Felt so bad for that alien camel-bird falling down the hill :(
PJ MasterDiddy SPOILER ALERT EVERYONE
PJ MasterDiddy " alien camel-bird" seems about right... xD
PJ MasterDiddy Same.
PJ MasterDiddy new species call alien camel-birds lol
PJ MasterDiddy :(
That old-bird-aliendinosaur, is very representative the way te artist feels. We just enjoy his music, we steel a part of his soul, but when the glory days has passed away we just forget him. nobody can help him. congratulations.! great video and song btw.
I'm so proud of this generation of music.
You haven't lived until you've heard this album on acid. The relief that came from the transition between Lady Dada's Nightmare to such a light and floaty song like this was crazy.
No nightmarish creepy-ass-looking alien-ostrich-turkey weird things were harmed in the making of this video.
Except for _that_ one.
:'(
It was a nice creature! I felt bad for it :-(
Dude, its ugly AF but I still feel bad for it. Damn. Tears were shed.
LOL
Many years later... this MV still makes me cry.
Me too man. Me too.
Such a touching song: Wes Anderson could use it as one of his movie's ending song, I already see the main character reflecting on his life while he's sitting into a quiet park.
Agree
Weird, I went and looked this up because i saw it as the ending song for a movie (Inside Job).
luv Wes Anderson films
Ubi would be cool but he only uses much older types of music like 60's British Invasion
It's crazy how emotional this video made me. I felt really attached to the strange creature and actually cried. And I will never watch this video again.
cringe
Gay
the video goes really well with the song, its almost like the harder he tries or longer he goes on the more of himself he loses! thats deep
Tell ya a secret. That alien thing is mgmt's creative freedom.
1one Bee true asf. Someone found the alien costume at a store in LA. The original. I want to buy it!
Winston Leg-Thigh this was during a time when the record company they were with was limiting their ability to make the music they want regardless of the “fans”
Winston Leg-Thigh that’s.. the point I was trying to make
@Winston Leg-Thigh you literally must have 2 braincells you obviously dont understand what hes tryna tell you
@Winston Leg-Thigh He is literally talking about before they started to make experimental music. The label WAS limiting them but then they gave them some leeway. That is LITERALLY what he's been trying to say. You dont seem to understand you and him are talking about different time periods in their career jesus christ. You are literally reading this much into a joke im-
Это всё такое же чувство, как хранит старого пса.
This is so sad for that cute creature...makes me cry.....
this is the point how in the life you know that its a cute creature instead of a terrible monster that deserved to be isolated and jailed by two guys in the middle of desert..?
@@sydbarret7765 lmao that's not what happened dippy shit
Syd Barret Jesus Christ
Me too
I don't care about the symbolism, that thing should not stay alive
man, these guys really deserve more fans
this
they already have a lot of fans
@@Sky-tv7rh they do and they don’t, a lot of people love the hits but don’t really delve into the deep cuts, which are amazing on every album
i would like the comment but the number is too perfect
@@Sky-tv7rhnot as many as they should
The whole album is a masterpiece
What an amazing album! It took me on an amazing journey listening to this. Through space and time feeling so alive and living in the moment ready for what ever life throws at us. running through the dusty unfinished roads of an underground ghost town alone, but needing nothing more.
I love this song!!! It’s so soothing to my ears.
You might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like MGMT
this video honestly makes me pretty sad, watching the thing slowly fall apart
To me this song means:
When you're doing everything "right," and are successful and have what people from the outside would call a good life....but still feel empty.
Most underrated Artist 🙃
Their best song, hands down.
I always loved this music video. The feeling of resignation is very strong in this song and is represented very well in the way they tend to the dying creature.
ooooh the reference to dark crystal...i didnt know until now! great job, master minds :)
this is definitely one of their best songs
Damn , I teared up at the end when the synth kicks in
If this isnt playing at my funeral, then I'm not dying.
there is this song i got recommend n i wanna recommend it to u is called Falling Ashes by the impures

Bro discovered immortality 💀💀
Me too bro!!
This ghostly music video demonstrates the harsh reality of growing old. Our bodies slowly start to fail us. This video painted the picture beautifully. Nothing lasts forever. 🌟
in 2 yrs this album will be a decade old and it sounds soo fresh still!
I fight back crying everytime I watch and listen ✌️peace and love MGMT🌺
You might like a band called The Doublejumps if you like MGMT
I hate people who judge the band and song because they dont like the video
all of their songs amazing
White.Rose.Garden_ATL hater
@Samuel Maurer he's right little boy
This song and the album itself are criminally underrated
I refuse to look at the video whenever I play this song. I'm a grown ass man but this tears me apart.
and here is another music video that I saw on MTV as a child, and that never left my mind. I am 20 years old now and I cannot express how happy I am to find it again :)))
Cool man! There’s so much stuff that I wish I could find again.
i love their videos cause they make 0 sense so it makes em interesting...seriously they're so out there
It makes sense if you actually try to understand it.
Dominic Fernando i usually never pay music videos too much attention; not enough to analyze them at least. what's it talking about?
I don't know if they said anything official about the meaning of this video. It could mean anything, art, after all, is open for interpretation.
Well that's obvious. It's a nice video anyway tho.
Seems simular to the story of Osiris, who was split into pieces, and thrown out into the desert, and then Isis collected the parts of his body and put him back together
This is a masterpiece. No joke.
The comments section appears to have turned into a forum for people with existential anxiety
yeah pretty much
This must have been your first day on the internet
You
Berries2512
I guess anyone of us wasting even as little as a few seconds to write on an obviously unmeaningful and overcrowded platform such as the youtube comments section, must suffer from some form of existential anxiety...
Berries2512 I'm too lazy to look it up, but wats existential anxiety?🙃
I can't watch the video. It makes me so sad :/
jesus, i thought i was the only one.
I was crying till now with the video. :'(
that little chicken dinosaur!! but at least it shines in the sky.
i dont even understand whats goin on ):
I love this song it always makes me so emotional. Resonates deep wow. Made things seem clearer in a beautifully sad way.
This video is a great example of having a dream that you can't really explain or how it even got into your head to dream about it in the first place, waking up feeling upset over it but you don't really know why. One of those dreams that you never forget. Brilliant
This song instantly makes my eyes well up with tears
Hey i've got a band recommendation if you like MGMT, you should look up The Doublejumps
If only this was a never ending song
He's okay, that's the way, buddy alien goes back into his own planet. Everything is okay, take care, little friendly companion alien!!
Wow this is incredibly positive I love it! :) thank you
You made my night I love you commenter I’m so happy in my soul right now because of you I hope you have a beautiful life because you truly made mine more beautiful through that wholesome comment (this isn’t sarcasm I mean it love)
dies in sand pit horribly
Yeah! Yeah! Get in that there planet boi!
*Slams naked alien-turky's head into sand*
Whispers: that's the way is has to be..
-I once told you about a sailor who described drowning to me.
-Yes, he said it was like going home.
-I was lying. He said it was agony.
Damn... I had party at my place and some random dude 50 yr old took my phone and let this song... i was like duuude... He said shut up, if you love mgmt, you are gonna be amazed. Everyone was charmed by it
I feel like that ugly alien thing represents me and my life falling apart each day
Jeremy S congratulations, it has ended.
ha. i wish
lol yeah thats a really good anime
I wonder if that is what the music video is supposed to be about, Idk, mgmt is surprisingly deep sometimes
Reminds me of my aging dog! :*(
I love this song. Thanks.
''I was a loner part'' til the beggining of ''and you convince yourself.''MAGICAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL.
I loved the creature, it really does make you feel bad and gives a special additional flavour to the song, exactly what a music video is supposed to achieve. I wouldn't change it at all.
"I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me" another cool quote for my collection :-)

MGMT was the soundtrack to so many of my nights and mornings of tripping. Always a pleasure cruise.
When you have tried your best, but after all you Fail, this song is perfect for you!

DAMN! THE SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME WHEN WE WENT TO THE DESERT!
Is this comment ironicly or are you one of the few who really knows what this video is about xd
@Justin JuicePack 🤪
I have impeccable taste in music.
I can't put into words how much I love this song.
Man what an absolute vibe.
MGMT and Mac Demarco need to make music together
twitter photos point to yes my dear
Christian Rosales oh yes!!!!
It's impossible to disagree
please
Christian Rosales totally!
This is such a good reflection on their first album
I love this song and I love this music video for some reason. It just is so odd and unique. The weird creatures and crazies remind me of the true diversity of the universe.
I remember listening this in high school when I wanted to have a moment to myself and it turned into hours of mgmt radiohead and bright eyes
Radiohead sucks
[Verse 1]
Dead in the water, it's not a paid vacation
The sons and daughters of city officials attend demonstrations
It's hardly a sink or swim when all is well if the ticket sells
[Verse 2]
Out with a whimper, it's not a blaze of glory
You look down from your temple
As people endeavor to make it a story
And chisel a marble word, but all is lost if it's never heard
[Chorus]
But I've got someone to make reports
That tell me how my money's spent
To book my stays and draw my blinds
So I can't tell what's really there
And all I need's a great big congratulations
[Verse 3]
I'll keep your dreams, you pay attention for me
As strange as it seems, I'd rather dissolve than have you ignore me
The ground may be moving fast
But I tied my boots to a broken mast
[Verse 4]
The difference is clear, you throw it in your cauldron
Rust and veneer, dusk and dawn, Steinways and Baldwins
You start with a simple stock of all the waste and salt to taste
[Chorus]
But damn my luck and damn these friends
That keep on combing back their smiles
I save my grace with half-assed guilt
And lay down the quilt upon the lawn
Spread my arms and soak up congratulations

Feeling compassion i never knew i had for whatever this beast is
people live their lives waiting for tomorrow, as if they would not die. the are Always anxious and making plans for the future, as if the present was irrelevante, superfluous, just one more step to achieve the future. they spend their entire lives living this paradox, and finally when they die, well, nothing happens, the cycle just repeat itself, well congratulations!
diego santiago marinho Jesus saves ...
Good take, I like it and agree.
Diego Santiago Marinho wow. That’s deep.

Hmm yes so do I seek congratulatioins or to maximize the present moment with the presense of my own self?
When I first tripped on shrooms, this song was playing and then everything started turning into Loony Tunes. The timing was so perfect that it was terrifying lol
Not quite how shrooms work, bud.
This is legit the saddest/ most depressing thing I’ve ever listened to and watched. I’m actually feeling for a bird thing that isn’t real.
Just finished high school and I'm sparking a nice little Congratulations joint rn
hope some of y'all in the same position
if so Congratulations!!!
