hi this song Falling Ashes by the Impures is a really good song that is underrated n needs attention imo; .. ...ccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc .ccccccccccccccc .cccccccccccccccc .ccccccccccccccccccccccc .ccccccccccc .ccccccccccccccccccccccccc .cccccccccccccccccccccccc .............. .c
I'm happy you commented only 6 months ago. I keep this band and album on replay and they never fail to amaze me even after all these years. Tame Impala could learn a thing or two from MGMT
I was blessed to be front row for their debut of this one at Movin On Penn State in 2012-13?, I was 🎡🎡🎡 and we were on the same frequency. I'll never forget when they stopped the show to squat down and marvel at the moon with us. Most of the crowd was there for other bands, so it was the band and maybe 10-15 of us really in the moment. Its a core memory I watch like a movie in my mind anytime I need to smile 😁😁😁 Love those Alien Days
Was expecting another wildly trippy acid video, but this was surprisingly calm, cinematic, and narrative-driven. Still weird, but well done. They have a hell of a team of skilled pros doing their videos.
love a Sponge B reference - 51 yr old english man - BTW sure life can be real shit what with addiction, the lottery of life, cruel shitty people in general - but if i collected any wisdom whatsoever ,so far, its this > Remember to laugh now and again, doesnt matter what for ,even if you gotta force it and also(and particularly) if theres no one else there xx
This song has grown on me over the years. The first time I heard it was in 2012 at one of their live shows, it felt special to hear an unreleased song but I never paid much attention to it afterwards; I was still enamored with their second album. But now, this is one of their songs I listen to the most. I just like it so much.
When I hear this song all I can think about was my time at Coachella Fest 2014 -- I fought my way to the very front of the crowd, touching the front rail, just to see MGMT as soon as they came on after Kid Cudi. A show I'll never forget.
the outro in this song is absolutely incredible and i can't stop listening to it. i'll try my best to explain the feeling i get from it; it feels like the aftermath of some terrifying event or adventure you just had to go through and now you're lying alone on a hill with the sun shining in your face trying to process and accept what just happened. it's messy but calm, a bittersweet conclusion.
This album very much deserved to be self-titled. It's everything that makes MGMT so unique perfectly distilled. Listening to it fully cemented them as my favorite musical artist, (though they might as well have been after listening to Congratulations.) I love this band.
yeeees!!! finally a video that does this song justice. love mgmt. Best line in the song "those days taught me everything I know like how to catch a feeling and when to let it go"
OMG I agree so much! That's my favorite line too, I had a dream that I met Andrew but that was the only thing he said to me but it was still epic. LOVE THIS SONG
Sometimes the windows combine with the seams in a way That twitches on a peak at the place where the spirit was slain One foot leads to another Night's for sleep, blue curtains, covers Sequins in the eyes That's a fine time to dine Divine who's circling, feeding the cards to the midwives Who love those alien days The nonstop alien days Ooh the alien days Must've skipped the ship and joined the team For a ride A couple hours to learn the controls And commandeer both my eyes Hey! Be quick dear, times are uncertain One month crawling, next year blurring Decades in the drain Monograms on the brain Decide what's working and what's moved on To the last phase The floodgate alien days I love those alien days Mmm... the alien days When the peels are down, it feels like traveling in style You don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile And in the summer, virgin visions Mindless humming Numbers can't decide if the day's supposed to smile Today find infinite ways it could be Plenty worse It's a blessing but it's also a curse Those days taught me everything I know How to catch a feeling And when to let it go How all the scheming, soulless creatures Can't find dreamer's honey in the hive If it's right beneath the nose And when the light is new The sky shows trembling cartoons You don't need smoke to cover Most of the world in a gloom But here comes racer number 7 Watch my fingers ripping out the lines If it looks like we could lose If it looks like we could lose If it looks like we could lose If it looks like we could lose
In a certain perspective, MGMT's MGMT is the most socially honest piece they have ever created. Our society right now are always detaching ourselves with entertainment that we don't know what is truly going on. So for MGMT to go out and try to be as human-less as possible is actual more human than what others are attempting at doing in political and social music right now.
(agrees with Michael Foster) creativity and individual thought and expression aren't valued. no ones used to forming their own ideas as much. makes my heart feel kicked in.
Or you can find other people who got the same meaning from the song, and get a feeling of connection and oneness from getting the same message from an artist's song. Took this from songmeanings and the person seems to be RIGHT ON. I think even MGMT would agree. v (must've skipped the ship) (and joined the team for a ride) (a couple hours to learn the controls) (and commandeer both my eyes) “Must’ve skipped the ship” - The ship here represents the true path to enlightenment of love, meditation, ethical conduct, acceptance, etc. “And joined the team for a ride,” - Instead going on the true path toward enlightenment, MGMT instead opted to use drugs with their friends; these lines being from the point of view of themselves already on mushrooms, LSD, or some other perception-shifting hallucinogen. “A couple of hours to learn the controls and commandeer both of my eyes” - MGMT is saying this period of insight is short lived and temporary; that once you trip, you only have a limited time to get in control of it and see what you need to see, and, unlike enlightenment, is essentially a thrill ride that must come to an end. To anyone that's ever taken LSD, this should be pretty clear.
A few years ago when I was about thirteen or so I stumbled upon this song, loved how weird the music video was and so the next day when my best friend came over I showed it to them. And we both fell in love with the song. After that three or so years of being best friends followed, and then I had to move house and sadly lost touch with my best friend. About a year or so later I had a dream about their birthday, checked my calendar on my phone and by some freaky coincidence it was listed as their birthday. And so I dug their number up from my phone and wished them a happy birthday, turns out it wasn't actually their birthday. But anyway, I got back in contact with them, and they still are the best friend I've ever had. Thank you for being my friend, you are incredibly dear to me and I can't wait for the rest of the journey we have together in life.
This, Flash Delirium and Cool Song No. 2 are my official favorites for now. These guys are incredible and one of the very few bands of this generation that in my opinion are great.
what a time to be alive when this album came out... so weird so new and it set the tone for my twenties along with so many other albums. I wouldn't change a single thing. I just hope i can see them live one day, they've cancelled twice the last two tours :(
Every video of MGMT is art. As a musician and artist myself, it is nice to see artists doing this and gaining some success while doing it. There is too much diarrhea coming out of the music industry. MGMT is definately not that. Even thier more mainstream stuff was different and artistic. Y'all are cool in my book. Stay you and fuck anyone trying to steer you to do otherwise!
I really love this song. And now I finally get to see the video, and it's really incredible! :O Alien Days was one of my favourites on the album. Hard to say tho', seeing as all the songs are amazing. And - uhm - that eye thing Andrew did with his eyes - I don't even know if it's edited or not - is quite creepy, yet fascinating xD
why this album hasn't gotten more attention is beyond me. Like what are people expecting? I really think people are waiting for Oracular Spectacular part deuce and it's just not happening! get over it and start getting into this music because it's fucking incredible
Personally, I was waiting for Congratulations part 2, or at least a suitable follow up. While I commend MGMT for this third album, and as a massive fan who has the vinyl Congratulations framed on his his wall, I didn't really find the third album to be that great. I must have listened to it 25 times just to be sure. If it was the second disk on a two-disk album, then it would be great, but it was just too experimental and out-there, and lacking any real catchy tunes, to go anywhere.
regan4000 Ya I was surprised initially by the sound and direction of it. Its not about how many times you listen to it tho IMO. I think it matters what you listen to in between. how big of a music fan you are. How many different types of music you listen to. If you listen to more, you'll hear more familiar things coming from their influences, and overall connect more with the album. If you don't know where they're coming from it's hard to see where they're going
Jake Richey Hmm, perhaps. However, I think that a musician should make music that is able to be be enjoyed without having to know what their specific influences were. Again, I find it fascinating that they followed "Congratulations" up with "MGMT", because "Congratulations" is in my top 5 albums of all time, and "MGMT" doesn't even make the top 200 of my favourite albums. I hope they can sustain a career along the lines of Beck. If they can, then "MGMT" will just be like Becks more exploratory, yet commercially less popular albums
ya i gotta disagree with you on this one. I think that putting your expectations on a musician is unfair. epecially with mgmt because they make whatever the hell sounds good to them or whatever they feel like making. It's not lazy or uninspired at all but it is a selfish way to go, much like what animal collective did. but it's also what makes the musicians themselves all the more appealing. to me at least and i think that's the crowd (if any) they are trying to appeal to
This song has so many hidden meanings and its impossible for a common psychedelic music fan to understand the hidden points behind this masterpiece.MGMT are trying to express their inner world and let people love them for their ideas and beliefs and not just their music melodies.Furthermore, when trying to interpret MGMT’s more abstract songs, one must keep in mind that Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the duo behind MGMT, are self-professed mystics. Fundamentally, mystics are people who believe that there is a universal truth/spirit of some sort that waits to be discovered through introspection and enlightenment by intelligent beings. A more romantic description would be that mystics strive to be children of the universe, not children of mankind; a concept beautifully illustrated in Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Many religions contain the core concepts of mysticism, as discussed in Aldous Huxley’s book “The Perennial Philosophy”. But anyways, here’s my rather long crack at an interpretation for MGMT’s “Alien Days”:Before the actual lyrical interpretation, it is noteworthy to point out that a child sings lines in the beginning of the song. MGMT often uses children as symbols in their songs to represent a state of consciousness where reality is perceived through relatively unbiased eyes (read: third eye). Children, due to their relatively short existence and innocence towards reality, do not carry the biases towards it that we adults do. They have a more untarnished view of reality, though not the cognition necessary to understand it. MGMT equates children to the blank slate of mind required to perceive the universal truth. (Sometimes the windows combine with the seams in a way) (that twitches on a peak at the place where the spirit was slain) Windows are open and allow you to see places where a wall does not. Seams hold things together. MGMT is saying the ingredients are sometimes right in people to allow them to gain insight into the universal truth/spirit; the truth/spirit that is the source of all beings’ souls/reality. The peak represents the supremeness and majesty of the universal truth/spirit. The spirit being slain represents the spirit becoming a real life being, going from supreme oneness into a biased, lesser state of being. Basically, MGMT is saying sometimes people gain insight into the spirit they originated from. (one foot leads to another) This represents that even though people may gain this kernel of insight into the universal spirit/truth, they have bills to pay, children to raise, parties to go to, etc. Life, through its impetus, deftly whisks us away from the most important of all things, the thing we originated from. (night's for sleep, blue curtains, covers) (sequins in the eyes) (that's a fine time to dine) (divine who's circling, feeding the cards to the midwives) Even though life is full of things we deem important and goals we want to accomplish, nighttime is when our opportunity naturally arises to be in the right state of mind necessary to gain some mystical insight. “Sequins in the eyes” represents the colors against the black backdrop one sees when their eyes are closed. Right before you fall asleep is “a fine time to dine,” a time where your mind stops churning out the thoughts of the day, relaxes, becomes empty, and thus becomes receptive to meaningful insight. However, “divine who’s circling, feeding the cards to the midwives” seems to suggest that instead of being receptive towards whatever truth comes their way, people use this nighttime state of consciousness to try to justify their preconceived notions on reality i.e. trying to gain insight towards whatever god they believe in. (who love those alien days) (the nonstop alien days) (mmm the alien days) Alien days symbolizes a time when a person has a blank slate and/or altered state of consciousness and is thus receptive towards some of the ultimate truth reality has to offer. When in this state, MGMT feels as though they are aliens during these times because they no longer perceive reality in as biased a manner that everyone else does. As mentioned before, MGMT often uses children to symbolize this rather pure perception of reality that is not blemished by preconceived notions. “The midwives who love those alien days” means that as adults we cherish children’s ability to live those alien days, to be able have such a pure, unbiased view of reality. For children, this consciousness is nonstop and ends with the gradual onset of adulthood. (must've skipped the ship) (and joined the team for a ride) (a couple hours to learn the controls) (and commandeer both my eyes) “Must’ve skipped the ship” - The ship here represents the true path to enlightenment of love, meditation, ethical conduct, acceptance, etc. (be quick dear, times are uncertain) Buddha once said something to the effect of, “There is only one time when you need to seek enlightenment: that time is now.” One must try to obtain enlightenment as soon as possible, because one never knows when they will no longer have an opportunity to do so. (one month crawling, next year blurring) (decades in the drain) Your life is gradually, then suddenly diminished before your eyes; to steal a parcel from an Ernest Hemingway quote. (monograms on the brain) (decide what's working and what's moved on to the last phase) From Wikipedia: “Monograms are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company, used as recognizable symbols or logos.” Just as monograms are symbols/logos that represent people/companies, MGMT suggests that the religions we follow are nothing more than symbols that we empower. That these symbols we use to understand/justify/cope with reality are introduced from the outside and do not come from within the self. “Decide what’s working” might be referring to MGMT’s song “It’s Working”, a song that concerns MGMT wondering if the drugs they are taking, and their subsequent state of consciousness, are working; that is to say, are what they are supposed to be doing to achieve insight to the truth. In “It’s Working”, MGMT concludes since drugs influence the physical self (“working in our blood”), they are inferior to gaining true insight through love, which is not a part of the physical self whatsoever, but is “only in your mind and not your heart”, and thus superior. Therefore, “Decide what’s working and what’s moved onto the last phase” means these symbols (society, parents, philosophers, priests) that introduce concepts to us that explain our reality decide for us if we are walking the correct path. MGMT believes mankind readily accepts these outside influences to answer the big questions concerning existence instead of discovering the way for ourselves; through introspection and self-discovery. (the floodgate alien days) (I love those alien days) (mmm the alien days) MGMT is saying that using drugs to shift you perception on reality in order to acquire true insight is like a floodgate; a torrent of truth that comes at you all at once. And that they love those alien days, those times when they’re on drugs and learning/experiencing so much. (when the peels are down it feels like traveling in style) MGMT is saying that when the normal biases and preconceived notions you carry towards reality are removed through meditation, youth, or drug usage, “it feels like traveling in style”…it feels like life/existence is a comfortable, pleasurable ride. (you don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile) “40 ton stones” seems to be a reference to Stonehenge and not needing wings referring to the belief that aliens or divine beings helped build the structure, because man at that time could not possibly do it alone. MGMT appears to be saying that you do not need to be superhuman to achieve enlightenment. It might also be a statement about the power of the mind; that you do not need to believe in a religion to be capable of miracles; the power to do such things resides within you, and is not bestowed or granted by some divine figure. (and in the summer, virgin visions) (mindless humming) MGMT likes to equate the summer/desert with a time of intense mystic/spiritual activity and winter/the artic with self-doubt and fear. “Virgin visions” suggests gaining unique insights for the first time and “mindless humming” being something akin to the “Om” sound. (numbers can't decide if the day's supposed to smile) MGMT is saying that reality is not all encompassed by math equations; that there is more to existence than what a computer could eventually replicate. Google cannot come up with an equation that will know if a day will hold a hidden treasure or small wonder. (today we find infinite ways it could be plenty worse) (it's a blessing but it's also a curse) Many religions, our parents, our communities, etc. teach us to be thankful. It is a great concept that teaches us to be humble and appreciate what they have now instead of desiring for more. We need to be thankful because so many people have it worse. MGMT might be suggesting that this thankfulness/contentment also breeds complacency and a fear of becoming those unfortunates we are thankful not to be. Instead of living life freely, we sit snug in our homes, thankful for the peace and fearful of the night. (those days taught me everything I know) (how to catch a feeling and when to let it go) The knowledge gained from those alien days, those times of mind-expanding consciousness, is what seems to be most important to MGMT. The RZA, leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, in his song “A Day to God is 1,000 Years,” states that he is “God in the bodily form, lettin’ my knowledge be born”. His lyric here has the same meaning to MGMT’s: that once you are in a pure state of being, knowledge comes from within you, not from outside of you and is the most meaningful knowledge one can attain. (how all the scheming, soulless creatures) (can't find dreamer's honey in the hive) (if it's right beneath the nose) Here, MGMT expresses vexation at not only people’s inability to not only understand mystics (dreamers) and the universal truth (honey in the hive) that they value so much, but also if they just gave it a chance, they could see it for themselves. “Honey in the hive” might also be referring to mankind as a whole; the bees (dreamers/mystics) who leave the hive (society/biased reality) and bring back pollen (universal truth) to sustain the colony (mankind). (and when the light is new) (the sky shows trembling cartoons) “When the light is new” - MGMT is saying that when people are first exposed to the truth (i.e. when someone is tripping for the first time; when someone hears some universal truth from a dreamer for the first time), it appears strange and unsettling (“the sky shows trembling cartoons”). Something that should show immense beauty (the sky and universal truth) is instead perceived negatively by those who are not ready or have too much bias. (you don't need smoke to cover most of the world in a gloom) MGMT here is saying since mankind refuses to value universal truth and instead values their own selfish ends and beliefs, that the pollution of the planet is only natural from such beings.
Fantastic video. Perfect symbiosis between video and music! Despite the beautiful idyllic images at the beginning, the music makes you feel uneasy and prepares you for a very unpleasant switch of the idyll to a dystopia.
Love this song and video. I love how this video has layers of messages..those with ears to hear and eyes to see..get it. Stimulation not only for the eyes, & ears, but the mind as well...People at the top are feeding off of the working class.
MGMT is an awesome band. The albums are becoming progressively weirder as time goes on; surely, because of the heavy use of hallucinogenic drugs. Not sure why people dislike the direction the band is taking, in my opinion, their music has always been like this and it is only getting better. It reminds me of very early Pink Floyd with Syd Barret, who has also dabbled (ha) in hallucinogenic drugs such as, LSD. MGMT was in the spotlight at one point, but it looks like they enjoy being underground I guess one could say. If MGMT signed to a bigger production company their music would be much, much worse. I applaud them.
Johnny Gilling My interpretation of it is the main characters, Andrew and his wife, are living creatures that produce an offspring. The offspring looks like a blue ball. In this same world, only larger in scale, you have an alien couple. The alien couple are engaging in acts that are sexual in nature, and this includes one feeding the other. What they are eating is those blue balls we saw earlier. It is a spin on how we eat caviar and never stop to think that the caviar are little fish that never were allowed to grow into adults cause we harvested them for consumption. We also equate caviar with being an aphrodisiac so some people eat it in order to enhance their libidos. Of course, this is only my take on it.

Kind of a sad story. I know that they're clearly not human since they're laying eggs and not babies, but it's still their kids. Just like chicken, they're being exploited. They get to live that peaceful cottage lifestyle. And in exchange they have to breed and reproduce so that their owners can eat. I wonder if this is a song MGMT wrote about their label again. That they get the easy lifestyle, but in exchange they must keep producing songs for the label to "eat".

Dude u think life is perfectly fucked up i just enjoy it noting i did what I could but by giving things names your just making it real witch takes away the fun
Fack yo Couch It's not quite so cut and dry unfortunately. The financial crisis we find our selves in is a result of the baby boomer generation and gen x creating economic policies that worked well in the short run, but ended up hurting us in the long run, as well as the financial irresponsibility of our fore fathers. There were many opportunities to create a more stable future in the last 50 years than I can bear to think about. Right now we are seeing decisions based on short term gain come back to bite us on the ass that were made 50 years ago. Things such as worker training and education, and trading policies. The straw that broke the camels back was the collapse of the housing market. banks got greedy and gave loans to people they shouldn't have. The past 50 years of greedy, financial short sighted thinking compounded on this event and we ended up with great rescission. Then Political BS between republicans and democrats has held the recovery up for ransom because the republicans are determined to make the democrats look useless, and use their control of the senate to shut down anything that the democrats have tried to do. This political in fighting can only exist because the fore fathers of the united states decided to implement the checks and balances policy back when they created the constitution, that was created to keep the ruling elite in power, and big businesses happy. Unfortunately what this means is that the classic American dream of working a blue collar job and living comfortably, is becoming mutually exclusive, and its the lower and middle class getting the shaft. Its all one big chess game, in which people try to constantly gain more power and wealth over the other, and do their best not to lose it. The current crop of republicans philosophy (mainly the Tea party (the most ironic name if you know your history)) is that of objectivism, that is based on the idea capitalism, with the only moral thing in life is making more happiness for your self ( such as taking a larger wage for your self and hiring temp worker to make up the difference). The sad thing is (because a large portion of republican supporters are the poor and forgotten) that generally speaking the democrats economic model is the best one for the middle and lower class because it is more socialist (the states had been socialist since FDR created old age security in the great depression). I dont mean to sound like I'm sucking the democrats dicks, I would not vote for them nor the republicans, as with every election its picking the shiniest of the two turds. the last time we tried the republican model of pure capitalism, we ended up with the industrial revolution and the gilded age, where it was the best time if you were the 1%, but was terrible if you were working class. This is just scratching the surface of the problems we face in coming years. get ready for a bumpy road ahead, and always read up on your history and facts, dogma has no place in the world now a days. scincerly, a Canadian on looker who loves american history and politics. Ps, my american history teacher summed up the states best when he said " America is home the the greatest of greats, and the worst of the worst"
Our fore fathers were fiscally irresponsible? The pure capitalism of the industrial revolution was yes great for the one percent, but it was also great for the average person. People were able to have large families and support them with one income today you have to have two incomes and maybe have 2 kids. There was no welfare. Average people came to this country in droves. Just like my grandfather who was able to come to this country speaking no english and became a multi millionaire. To say that the industrial revolution and free markets didnt help the average person is simply incorrect. It is much better to be in the 1% today as far as wealth than it was then. Now you can borrow money at 0% to buy more assets if you are in the 1%. Also to think there is a difference between republican and democrat is also incorrect. Worker training, and education policies were put into place long before 50 years ago. Borrowing money for consumption is not a recovery, there is no recovery.
I respect your view point, and I like your response, but I have to disagree with the trickle down idea, of unfettered capitalism. people used to have large families so that they could put the kids to work at a young age, in hopes of being able to put food on the table. The novella a Christmas carol by Charles Dickens was a statement about the industrial revolutions, and the kind of philosophies that came along with it. The big families were not out of love and want, but rather out of necessity. If you are an intelligent person willing to risk it all, unfettered capitalism is probably the best system to live in. however, there is always the problem of those who haven't been blessed with these gifts. The problem that this creates is crime and poverty in which as we know, is bad for business and bad for growth, as you now have a large portion of the population that is disenchanted with the upper class, and you end up with a french revolution. the reason why unfettered capitalism does not trickle down well is because of human nature, and the good fortune of some. If you have worked your ass off to build your company from scratch, and your doing well. eventually your going to have a lot of expensive workers. your going to think, (fairly) that because you risked it all you should have the largest pay check. eventually this morphs into what we see today of extremely rich people paying their workers scraps for hard work. since these workers are making just enough to survive, they cannot bring their ideas, and business plans to fruition, thus they are a wasted opportunity of growth for the economy. also dont get me wrong, I dont like the democrats either. I think politicians should be payed just enough to survive, with no opportunity for a chance to make money off endorsements, and lobbying. we might actually see people who want to make change come into power, instead of some dead beast sitting their time away, collecting their paycheck. I realize that my views are slightly more liberal than yours and I can respect that, thanks for not getting ignorant and having an interesting conversation.

One of the best pure cuts of whimsical, lightheaded, delirious psychedelic pop I’ve ever heard. Beautiful track, maybe my favorite song of theirs.
Mgmt should write a modern psychedelic opera. It might turn into a masterpiece.
This
They did, 7 years ago and it comes out tomorrow 😂
It would turn into folk horror
Like how Ari Astier makes movies now
@abeebzcpogo whats it called?

Fun fact: there are 17 different chords in this song (C, C#m, C#m7b5, D, Dm, D6, E, E7, Edim7, Emaj7, F, F#m7b, G, G#7, G#7sus4, A, B7)
One of their most complex songs, it reminds me of Bowies complex tunes also.
Andrew is a genius
When he says "If it looks like we could lose" at the end with like a TON of reverb on it... Is heaven to me.
It makes it feel like yeah we are losing but we gave all we had and that's fine
I'm happy you commented only 6 months ago. I keep this band and album on replay and they never fail to amaze me even after all these years. Tame Impala could learn a thing or two from MGMT
Criminally underrated/under-viewed song. This song fucking bangs and the lyrics are impeccable. Nobody can put drug use into words like Andrew.
I don't think this is drug use, this is how the world works...
is nobody going to talk about what a good dancer that woman is
And that's on taking ballet for 15+ years 😂
nop
I was blessed to be front row for their debut of this one at Movin On Penn State in 2012-13?, I was 🎡🎡🎡 and we were on the same frequency. I'll never forget when they stopped the show to squat down and marvel at the moon with us. Most of the crowd was there for other bands, so it was the band and maybe 10-15 of us really in the moment. Its a core memory I watch like a movie in my mind anytime I need to smile 😁😁😁 Love those Alien Days
this is a masterpiece, but you really get it only after several listens
totally agree! such a mix of different genres. genius 🙂
I agree. I've listened to it about 40 times in the last few days. I feel like I always feel/hear something new with every listen. So satisfying.
FINALLY, a normal video from MGMT for a change!
No, this is not normal...
akobi williams
no shit Sherlock
akobi williams You're not normal.
What... is.. normal?
2:14 if that's your definition of normal... seek help haha
Was expecting another wildly trippy acid video, but this was surprisingly calm, cinematic, and narrative-driven. Still weird, but well done. They have a hell of a team of skilled pros doing their videos.
I'm just. Midsommar before Midsommar
@@ah-nononoo Wicker Man was Midsommar before Midsommar :)
This made way more sense than The Village...
So you didn't bad trip when you saw those aliens dancing?? Bs
It may be "weird" but u were right when you said well done. All art takes talent, skill and practice
The Alien woman dancing reminded me of Squidward's big dance performance at the Krusty Krab. Ayy lmao

+Hector Ramirez aw i wish i could go
There's nothing like this music that I grew up with.
Happy early 10th anniversary to MGMT album by MGMT!
the outro in this song is absolutely incredible and i can't stop listening to it. i'll try my best to explain the feeling i get from it; it feels like the aftermath of some terrifying event or adventure you just had to go through and now you're lying alone on a hill with the sun shining in your face trying to process and accept what just happened. it's messy but calm, a bittersweet conclusion.
If it looks like we could lose

This album very much deserved to be self-titled. It's everything that makes MGMT so unique perfectly distilled. Listening to it fully cemented them as my favorite musical artist, (though they might as well have been after listening to Congratulations.) I love this band.
yeeees!!! finally a video that does this song justice. love mgmt. Best line in the song
"those days taught me everything I know like how to catch a feeling and when to let it go"
OMG I agree so much! That's my favorite line too, I had a dream that I met Andrew but that was the only thing he said to me but it was still epic. LOVE THIS SONG
agreed, and also "you dont need smoke to cover most of the world in a gloom"

Sequins in the eyes
That's a fine time to dine
Divine who's circling, feeding the cards to the midwives
Who love those alien days
The nonstop alien days
Ooh the alien days
Must've skipped the ship and joined the team
For a ride
A couple hours to learn the controls
And commandeer both my eyes
Hey!
Be quick dear, times are uncertain
One month crawling, next year blurring
Decades in the drain
Monograms on the brain
Decide what's working and what's moved on
To the last phase
The floodgate alien days
I love those alien days
Mmm... the alien days
When the peels are down, it feels like traveling in style
You don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile
And in the summer, virgin visions
Mindless humming

Today find infinite ways it could be
Plenty worse
It's a blessing but it's also a curse
Those days taught me everything I know
How to catch a feeling
And when to let it go
How all the scheming, soulless creatures
Can't find dreamer's honey in the hive
If it's right beneath the nose
And when the light is new
The sky shows trembling cartoons
You don't need smoke to cover
Most of the world in a gloom
But here comes racer number 7
Watch my fingers ripping out the lines
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose

In a certain perspective, MGMT's MGMT is the most socially honest piece they have ever created. Our society right now are always detaching ourselves with entertainment that we don't know what is truly going on. So for MGMT to go out and try to be as human-less as possible is actual more human than what others are attempting at doing in political and social music right now.
The self titled album is actually the best album
Yal are crazy. Congratulations is definitely the best.
this band becomes so much better when you stop trying to understand there shit and just roll with it
This is so true
why would you want to understand their interpretation when you can have your own?
(agrees with Michael Foster) creativity and individual thought and expression aren't valued. no ones used to forming their own ideas as much. makes my heart feel kicked in.
Or you can find other people who got the same meaning from the song, and get a feeling of connection and oneness from getting the same message from an artist's song. Took this from songmeanings and the person seems to be RIGHT ON. I think even MGMT would agree. v
(must've skipped the ship)
(and joined the team for a ride)
(a couple hours to learn the controls)
(and commandeer both my eyes)
“Must’ve skipped the ship” - The ship here represents the true path to enlightenment of love, meditation, ethical conduct, acceptance, etc.
Oh ouiiiiiiii

I am still waiting for a new album from them. I don't care how it sounds or how good it is, I just want more MGMT music.
Im tired of simply hearing the word "Yuh,yuh, yuh" or something at this point.
I will always love mgmt no matter what they do
This type of songwriting is rare. Stunning, innovative, beautiful, bizarre. Just wow. And awesome video!

Jake Richey
Hmm, perhaps.
It's not lazy or uninspired at all but it is a selfish way to go, much like what animal collective did. but it's also what makes the musicians themselves all the more appealing. to me at least and i think that's the crowd (if any) they are trying to appeal to
1:42 i just love this part!
My favorite song of MGMT
Georgina Pazcoguin is incredible. She's the alien ballet artist. Absolute joy to watch. Severely talented.

Dios, yo conocía a MGMT y hace poco descubrí Foster the People, no puedo superar Are you what you want to be?

Aguante MGMT y Foster the people ♥️♥️♥️
This song has so many hidden meanings and its impossible for a common psychedelic music fan to understand the hidden points behind this masterpiece.MGMT are trying to express their inner world and let people love them for their ideas and beliefs and not just their music melodies.Furthermore, when trying to interpret MGMT’s more abstract songs, one must keep in mind that Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser, the duo behind MGMT, are self-professed mystics.
(Sometimes the windows combine with the seams in a way)
(that twitches on a peak at the place where the spirit was slain)
Windows are open and allow you to see places where a wall does not.
(one foot leads to another)
This represents that even though people may gain this kernel of insight into the universal spirit/truth, they have bills to pay, children to raise, parties to go to, etc. Life, through its impetus, deftly whisks us away from the most important of all things, the thing we originated from.
(night's for sleep, blue curtains, covers)
(sequins in the eyes)
(that's a fine time to dine)
(divine who's circling, feeding the cards to the midwives)
Even though life is full of things we deem important and goals we want to accomplish, nighttime is when our opportunity naturally arises to be in the right state of mind necessary to gain some mystical insight.
(who love those alien days)
(the nonstop alien days)
(mmm the alien days)
Alien days symbolizes a time when a person has a blank slate and/or altered state of consciousness and is thus receptive towards some of the ultimate truth reality has to offer.
(must've skipped the ship)
(and joined the team for a ride)
(a couple hours to learn the controls)
(and commandeer both my eyes)
“Must’ve skipped the ship” - The ship here represents the true path to enlightenment of love, meditation, ethical conduct, acceptance, etc.
(be quick dear, times are uncertain)
Buddha once said something to the effect of, “There is only one time when you need to seek enlightenment: that time is now.” One must try to obtain enlightenment as soon as possible, because one never knows when they will no longer have an opportunity to do so.
(one month crawling, next year blurring)
(decades in the drain)
Your life is gradually, then suddenly diminished before your eyes; to steal a parcel from an Ernest Hemingway quote.
(monograms on the brain)
(decide what's working and what's moved on to the last phase)
From Wikipedia: “Monograms are often made by combining the initials of an individual or a company, used as recognizable symbols or logos.” Just as monograms are symbols/logos that represent people/companies, MGMT suggests that the religions we follow are nothing more than symbols that we empower.
(the floodgate alien days)
(I love those alien days)
(mmm the alien days)
MGMT is saying that using drugs to shift you perception on reality in order to acquire true insight is like a floodgate; a torrent of truth that comes at you all at once. And that they love those alien days, those times when they’re on drugs and learning/experiencing so much.
(when the peels are down it feels like traveling in style)
MGMT is saying that when the normal biases and preconceived notions you carry towards reality are removed through meditation, youth, or drug usage, “it feels like traveling in style”…it feels like life/existence is a comfortable, pleasurable ride.
(you don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile)
“40 ton stones” seems to be a reference to Stonehenge and not needing wings referring to the belief that aliens or divine beings helped build the structure, because man at that time could not possibly do it alone. MGMT appears to be saying that you do not need to be superhuman to achieve enlightenment. It might also be a statement about the power of the mind; that you do not need to believe in a religion to be capable of miracles; the power to do such things resides within you, and is not bestowed or granted by some divine figure.
(and in the summer, virgin visions)
(mindless humming)
MGMT likes to equate the summer/desert with a time of intense mystic/spiritual activity and winter/the artic with self-doubt and fear. “Virgin visions” suggests gaining unique insights for the first time and “mindless humming” being something akin to the “Om” sound.
(numbers can't decide if the day's supposed to smile)
MGMT is saying that reality is not all encompassed by math equations; that there is more to existence than what a computer could eventually replicate. Google cannot come up with an equation that will know if a day will hold a hidden treasure or small wonder.
(today we find infinite ways it could be plenty worse)
(it's a blessing but it's also a curse)
Many religions, our parents, our communities, etc. teach us to be thankful.
(those days taught me everything I know)
(how to catch a feeling and when to let it go)
The knowledge gained from those alien days, those times of mind-expanding consciousness, is what seems to be most important to MGMT.
(how all the scheming, soulless creatures)
(can't find dreamer's honey in the hive)
(if it's right beneath the nose)
Here, MGMT expresses vexation at not only people’s inability to not only understand mystics (dreamers) and the universal truth (honey in the hive) that they value so much, but also if they just gave it a chance, they could see it for themselves.
“Honey in the hive” might also be referring to mankind as a whole; the bees (dreamers/mystics) who leave the hive (society/biased reality) and bring back pollen (universal truth) to sustain the colony (mankind).
(and when the light is new)
(the sky shows trembling cartoons)
“When the light is new” - MGMT is saying that when people are first exposed to the truth (i.e. when someone is tripping for the first time; when someone hears some universal truth from a dreamer for the first time), it appears strange and unsettling (“the sky shows trembling cartoons”). Something that should show immense beauty (the sky and universal truth) is instead perceived negatively by those who are not ready or have too much bias.
(you don't need smoke to cover most of the world in a gloom)
MGMT here is saying since mankind refuses to value universal truth and instead values their own selfish ends and beliefs, that the pollution of the planet is only natural from such beings.
AIN'T NOBODY GOT THE TIME FOR THAT!
thank you

Judging by your essay (which I didn't read) you are no common psychedelic music fan, but truly enlightened. We live in a society

Fantastic video. Perfect symbiosis between video and music! Despite the beautiful idyllic images at the beginning, the music makes you feel uneasy and prepares you for a very unpleasant switch of the idyll to a dystopia.

Q banda esta q me empeso a gustar, con esos videos tan particulares tienen onda
I applaud them.
they've actually been signed to some pretty big labels. they just dont take any shit from anybody.
All of MGMT videos are trippy. What I call. How do spot a drug attic.
MGMT has so many songs like this that are so underrated. They remind me so much of Pink Floyd in how deep their songs can be.
the video went from 0 to 100 real quick.

this song changed my life
Even David lynch would have a hard time figuring this out.
ha, nice one
Lol.. 😂
@@Artworkbyautumn naw that’s sound pretty accurate
Would he though? This is looks eerily similar in concept to the harvesting of Garmonbozia. The boys are Lynch fans, they knew what they were doing.

(Hey!) Be quick, dear, times are uncertain
One month crawling, next year blurring
Decades in the drain
Monograms on the brain
Decide what's working and what's moved on to the last phase
The floodgate alien days
I love those alien days
Mmm, the alien days
When the peels are down it feels like traveling in style
You don't need wings to hover forty ton stones for a mile
And in the summer, virgin visions, mindless humming
Numbers can't decide if the day's supposed to smile
Today find infinite ways it could be plenty worse
It's a blessing, but it's also a curse
Those days taught me everything I know
How to catch a feeling, and when to let it go
How all the scheming, soulless creatures
Can't find dreamer's honey in the hive
If it's right beneath the nose
And when the light is new, the sky shows trembling cartoons
You don't need smoke to cover most of the world in a gloom
But here comes racer number 7
Watch my fingers ripping out the lines
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
If it looks like we could lose
I feel like Andrew and Ben would be fun people to get high with

Kind of a sad story. I know that they're clearly not human since they're laying eggs and not babies, but it's still their kids.
Just like chicken, they're being exploited. They get to live that peaceful cottage lifestyle. And in exchange they have to breed and reproduce so that their owners can eat.
I wonder if this is a song MGMT wrote about their label again. That they get the easy lifestyle, but in exchange they must keep producing songs for the label to "eat".
Masterpiece
This is my all time favourite song !! N1
Ooo those alien days!
very trippy, perfect for the track =) LUV MGMT!!
Lyric:
Sometimes the windows combine with the seams in a way
That twitches on a peak at the place where the spirit was slain
One foot leads to another
Night’s for sleep, blue curtains, covers
Sequins in the eyes
That’s a fine time to dine
Divine who’s circling, feeding the cards to the midwives
Who love those alien days
The nonstop alien days
Hmm
The alien days
Must’ve skipped the ship and joined the team
For a ride
A couple hours to learn the controls
And commandeer both my eyes
Hey! Be quick, dear, times are uncertain
One month crawling, next year blurring
Decades in the drain
Monograms on the brain
Decide what’s working and what’s moved on to the last phase
