Cracked head on our BMW 325i E30?? How to replace the head and upgrade to a Shrick 272 Camshaft!

- We started tearing down the cylinder head on the E30 ready to send away to be refurbished only to find a nasty surprise! Down the centre of the head a huge crack had previously been welding up. We had no idea it was there, Lewis has been driving around with it for the last 12 years so it was obviously well repaired but with the extra power were giving the engine we decided it was not worth the risk doing any upgrades to it!
In this video, after Lewis found the crack, we replace the head and rebuild with new components and a Shrick 272 cam from Hack Engineering.

It is a known issue with all M20 heads, till this day though no one has cracked an AMC head, despite some having minor QC issues.

Yeah was gutted. Been driving around for 12 years with a ticking time bomb! Didn't sting as much as the import duty though! Ouch!

When tightening bolts 90°, I always put a dot of paint on one side of the bolt head, no hassle with degree discs or other measuring tools and it is also a check whether you have had all bolts.
That's quite a handy tip thank Michel! We'll use that when we're rebuilding the E46 engine 👍

The AMC has much smaller shape/size intake, exhaust ports, and the flycut on the combustion chamber isn't done near as well as the OE head.
Hi, yeah I did compare both heads when looking for a replacement and figured a new AMC would be better than a recon BMW head that could crack again. You didn't see it in the video but I did port out the exhaust ports and smooth everything out apart from the intake. I found that it's best not to do anything to the intake. The casting quality seems really good on this one. We'll see how it runs!
Did your amc had amc valves and springs ?
Yes valves and springs included. I went for the easy option 😅

are the springs same double springs like Oem 885 head?
also how is that running after one year?
Did you notice any difference in performance with the amc head?
Yeah they have double valve springs. We were very impressed with the quality of the head apart from the porting not being as good as the original

To be honest I've not finished that project yet! Our volvo 240 will be finished first, then I'll get back on my beloved e30.

I'll be running a Miller mag with war chip, a 272 cam, a light waight fly wheel, and 6 pranch manifold
Price tag on that head?
It was about £600 plus shipping and import duties if I remember correctly!

I think you adjusted the valves wrong .
My plan is to get a few miles done, then re-gap the valves 👍 thanks for watching
