Man what a series! I’m a big fan of FlaSh so always sad to see him fall, but zerO has played like an absolute monster this ASL and he 100% deserves all the success he’s been having lately. I really love his play style, especially in ZvP. Now we’ve all gotta root for Light b/c a ZvZ final would be kind of a bummer after such an amazing tournament. I won’t complain either way though - I’m predicting that zerO/Queen will take it all
Soma lost to Light pretty badly last KSL it hurt my eyes. Though I'd also prefer not to see a ZvZ final, I'm kinda rooting for Soma because he definitely has come a long way since then.
Take away one: Artosis has man-crush on FlaSh. Who can blame him? Take away two: Both Tastelss and Artosis are biased against Zerg. Who can blame them? Take away three: I love watching ASL, I hope it continues forever.
I'm a little skeptical on this Goliath+Bio build... It didn't work that well against Action, and it didn't here as well The Valks play was really good, although I think its strength lies in the surprise and novelty (but I guess we'll see if the meta switches from today; that would be truly amazing). By the way, let's take a moment to salute how much he brought to BW in term of strategies. Hitchhiker is such a peculiar map, if the drop hadn't been caught, we could have had a longer game, that's too bad Let's just hope we don't get a mirror matchup in the finale
I don't expect the valkyries to become meta either, expect against pool →2 hatch Muta, where Zerg really needs to make something happen with the early Mutalisks. It's a bit hard to evaluate the goliath into bio build after this series, in my opinion. The build didn't impress, but I think it has more to do with how the games played out. Here in game 2, Flash moved out too early and left his main exposed. He lost many scvs and was forced to all-in into Zero's natural, where his bio/goliath ball was caught between Mutalisks and sunken. Plus, that particular map always favours Zerg in Muta play, regardless of Terran going bio or mech. Against Action in game 1, Flash lost a lot of scvs to the Mutalisk harass, and was, again, kinda forced to move out into an unfavourable fight. So, I don't think the build itself is necessarily bad: it's just Flash failing to defend against the aggressive Muta play in the games where he happened to try that build.
Hitchhiker is a zerg map 100%. Muta harass and temples make early pushes impossible, and then that center becomes a dark-swarm highway to gg. That's why terrans play so wildly on it, the odds are against them AND there is a hard timer to dark swarm. With decent muta micro? No chance.
Everytime I see Queen's shoes my brain screams "WHAT ARE THOOOOOOOOOSE?!?!?!" Artosis is spot on lmao, dude could get hit by a truck and he'd still stay upright

Mike Barnes queen still has three bases but I’m guessing he had very low drone count and no army left. He was counting on scourge to win the air fight so that his mutas could clean up the marines. Flash was fully powering off two base so the next marine ball would have been unstoppable
Mutalisks are so OP in SC1. It's crazy how much damage it takes to kill them. They can almost ignore missile turrets. They seem a lot more fair in Starcraft 2, still a powerful unit, but dies fairly quickly if they get caught in the open.
To be fair though if muta and dark swarm weren't so OP terran would have 90%+ win rate vs zerg. Other than muta zerg has nothing to keep terran from building a quick bio/tank army and A moving to the win. And after 15 minutes zerg has nothing but swarm that stops terran from just steam rolling them
gratz to queen but some of these map pool seems heavily favoring zerg. was terran suppose to not take that mineral expansion at the back? feels distance is so far away to ur entrance to that expansion that it seems impossible to do anything on that map
spoiler why is it that zerg seem to be able to put down a third base gas easier these days? Its the deciding factor, and it looks strange watching 3 gas muta own terran forces. 2 gas muta have to play snipe and run. I remember JD having terrible problems trying to get a 3rd gas while Flash rushed him with medic marine, then followed with a terran ball. Is it the 9 pool that stops terran from fast taking their natural?
Because nowadays Zergs go (mostly) 2 Hatch play instead of 3 Hatch play opening. What does that do? Basically, your Mutas are 30-40 seconds earlier at Terran's base and there are 6 of them not 9, but for Terran stim is barely finished, turrets must be placed very early and in 90% of the games, that forces Terran to stay at his base for a long time (usually till Vessels or when Bio force (if he went bio) is strong). That allows Zergs to go quick 3rd Hatch at another base (with gas ofc) while constantly roaming with Mutas. If you look even closer you will find that that 3rd base is usually closer to Zerg starting point, where on the other hand with the "older" 3 Hatch opening it's usually another main so Lurkers can be placed above the ramps. 2 Hatch is the modern way to play but your micro needs to be even more careful cause you are playing early games with less larva so each mistake is more expensive. P.S. Zergs started going 2 Hatch to counter the 1-1-1 build from Terran, then Terran started to go Goliath build to counter 2 hatch play. Cheers

'cause i remember when Z went for 2hatch muta all-inish (like 10-12 years ago) to kill T (and it was heavy micro dependant) and 3 hatch was 'standard' just to keep him on his feet for you to get 3rd gas and Flash 'invented' early armory->goliath to counter this, but maps were more STANDARD macro (like FS,Colloseum,Andromeda) expcept maybe Destination or Sin Chupung Ryoung
yeah because Flash is supposed to have 100% Win ratio and should just win all games and his opponents should type gg at start already. Flash is very good but not untouchable for other pros. period.

On hitchhiker Flash should have guarded his valks a lot more than he did and maybe should have waited for a bigger/better spread marine force in the valley, timed attack or not. His highground second base turned out to be a liability as well...

Well, I'll just quote my own message from the previous video. "I say Zero and Light are going to win. Zero has been the most solid player so far in this ASL, and Flash's TvZ seemed pretty weak against Action, so Zero definitely has a good shot here if he just goes for the macro game. (And the odds is at 3.5, so it seems like a good opportunity to make some cash. $$)" I hope you guys all listened to me and made some easy cash. :) Aside from the easy money, there isn't that much to say about this series. Once again, we didn't get a single macro game. I wasn't expecting Zero to commit so heavily on the 2-hatch muta play, but hey, whatever works for him. Game 5 was probably the most interesting. Zero was patient in delaying the tank push, cutting off reinforcements, and waiting until he had enough Mutalisks to crush the bio force. That's textbook ZvT defense. The dropship interception was probably the killing blow.
Hopefully light goes to the finals too. light is the player I'm rooting for this season but I think zero will win it all he is on a different level of his game

Spoilers! During intense battles ZerO's APM was over 500+, that's what it takes to take out God! Incredible execution and magnificent defense. I never saw FlaSh so hopeless until this series if you watch his face closely.
In Game 5, why did Flash choose the other expo instead of his natural? I'm not very good at SC so I'm trying to figure out advantages of building in that spot.
Well, the casters explained it. Flash saw Zero going for a 2-hatch play, which could either be fast Mutalisks or another Lurker bust. By staying on high ground, he was immune to the Lurker bust, and with his early Valkyries, he had nothing to fear from the Mutalisks either, so whatever Zero could try was negated. The idea is, 2 hatch is an aggressive build, so Zero is going to fall behind if he cannot deal any damage with it. Zero's win was a bit of a miracle, honestly. He committed to his Muta play (which you wouldn't expect against Valkyries) and somehow managed to trim the Valkyrie count with a couple of scourge hits until his Muta were able to take on the bio force.
@@GrandBenja Yeah, I didn't expect Zero to win at all. Zerg is my favorite race so it was great to see, but there were so, so, so, many moments where Zero's mutalisks were a hex away from a Valkrie volley. I'm in awe with his mutalisk control and ability to macro at the same time. To me, it seemed as if Zero had to basically stay glued to the mutalisk screen. Thanks for explaining it, appreciate it!! This has been one of my favorite ASL seasons!!

I've been watching BW for probably 12 years and I still don't think I understood half of what I saw in this series, esp game 1. Kinda wish the commentary was more focused more on the tactical and strategic aspects of the build orders and the mind games, cause I was at a complete loss for following how these games were gonna pan out.
There isn't much to say about game 1. Zero went for an aggressive pool first, 2-hatch Muta, didn't do any relevant damage because of the Valkyrie defence, and fell behind economically. He then tried to "cheat" his way out of his deficit by greedily droning up in his double expansion, but Flash scouted it and busted him. I would guess Zero intended to go for the double expansion from the start. The idea is, pretend he is all-in on his early Mutalisks, just build a couple of them, trick Flash into playing defensively, and double expand while Flash is wasting his time building turrets. He used similar ideas in his ZvP games, with fake hydra busts into macro. But as I said, Flash scouted the expansions and went for the kill.
@@GrandBenja That's why I'm confused, why fake the mass mutas and then go mass mutas? I feel like there was a chance for him to move out of it into hydra lurker. Also, if he double expands, but just pulled the drones, he'd still be at three base. It was a bit strange to see the gg timing until you realize he must never have started lurker aspect and just let his drones die. Like I said, very confusing. Also, *SPOILERS* did Zero win the series, or did Flash lose the series. I really can't tell why in some of the games he didn't just go straight bio. I'm having flashbacks of when Fantasy was going Valk, he killed some games and lost others like he was just throwing spaghetti on a wall and seeing if it sticks.
@@sinepatre Zero himself might have been a bit confused too, as early valkyries isn't a common build either. He may not have expected Flash to keep building Valkyries; you usually just build a couple to fend off the Mutalisks. I think the problem with lurkers is that this map isn't so suited to them, because they can't defend the third and the fourth at the same time (unlike on maps where you can expand into a main and its natural). So after going for the double expansion, Zero was kinda committed to maintaining map control with Muta-lings. As for the rest of the series, Flash made some mistakes, but I don't think his build was particularly at fault. In game 2, he moved out too early on a(n unfair) map that clearly favours Muta counter-attacks, putting himself in a losing position where he had to all-in at Zero's natural. In game 4, it was a scouting problem; he retreated his scv too early. And in game 5, he did, in fact, go bio. He probably would have won if Zero hadn't miraculously managed to trim the Valkyrie count. I love the way you phrased it though. "He was just throwing spaghetti on a wall and seeing if it sticks." Beautiful!
check teamliquid for more 'insights', but most of TvZ or ZvT unless it's some bunker rush or hydra bust (which are map dependend), standard game is Z going 3hatch muta to stall the T in order to get 3rd gas and fend off him with lurker/ling and get hive tech(defiler) and T is trying to counter it with vessel/irradiate and going SK Terran (bio+vessel), unless it's old school timing marine+1 rush into natural. 1-1-1 or pure mech is map dependant. Fantasy's valkyrie was 'innovative' to counter muta, but then Z counter it with scourge (same with vessel) and we have a circle:). Blizz fixed the glitch in remastered that valks don't fire when amount of sprites reach the limit (255), but still vaks are expensive, hardly microable and need amout&time to deal dmg either way they are easily countered with scourge like vessel. Many 'build decisions' are map dependant and hence we don't have this big competetive scene like years ago (OSL/MSL/SPL) it's hard to follow their decisions
@@model84 streams help somewhat. amateur tournaments, but more basic there. as always, community conversation goes a ways. and many pros and other big talents do tutorials and FAQs (some of which are quite intensive, many translated)...it's different for sure but it's acquirable. In most ways, besides the rate of change, it seems easier to follow their decisions. if you've done the work.
and terrans, zergs keep saying P is op. I really suggest those Z/T wannabies play some P at high level to see how Protoss is OP... a hint its not at all.

Beating flash on a best of 5 is like winning the tournament itself basing on the reactions of the very few players that managed to beat him

I still think standard SK terran is better than any of these gimmicky builds.
Queen's other expansion was being taken down too first game towards the very end of the gg.

why is it that zerg seem to be able to put down a third base gas easier these days? Its the deciding factor, and it looks strange watching 3 gas muta own terran forces. 2 gas muta have to play snipe and run. I remember JD having terrible problems trying to get a 3rd gas while Flash rushed him with medic marine, then followed with a terran ball. Is it the 9 pool that stops terran from fast taking their natural?

Because nowadays Zergs go (mostly) 2 Hatch play instead of 3 Hatch play opening. What does that do? Basically, your Mutas are 30-40 seconds earlier at Terran's base and there are 6 of them not 9, but for Terran stim is barely finished, turrets must be placed very early and in 90% of the games, that forces Terran to stay at his base for a long time (usually till Vessels or when Bio force (if he went bio) is strong). That allows Zergs to go quick 3rd Hatch at another base (with gas ofc) while constantly roaming with Mutas. If you look even closer you will find that that 3rd base is usually closer to Zerg starting point, where on the other hand with the "older" 3 Hatch opening it's usually another main so Lurkers can be placed above the ramps.
2 Hatch is the modern way to play but your micro needs to be even more careful cause you are playing early games with less larva so each mistake is more expensive.
P.S. Zergs started going 2 Hatch to counter the 1-1-1 build from Terran, then Terran started to go Goliath build to counter 2 hatch play. Cheers

'cause i remember when Z went for 2hatch muta all-inish (like 10-12 years ago) to kill T (and it was heavy micro dependant) and 3 hatch was 'standard' just to keep him on his feet for you to get 3rd gas and Flash 'invented' early armory->goliath to counter this, but maps were more STANDARD macro (like FS,Colloseum,Andromeda) expcept maybe Destination or Sin Chupung Ryoung

Aside from the easy money, there isn't that much to say about this series. Once again, we didn't get a single macro game. I wasn't expecting Zero to commit so heavily on the 2-hatch muta play, but hey, whatever works for him. Game 5 was probably the most interesting. Zero was patient in delaying the tank push, cutting off reinforcements, and waiting until he had enough Mutalisks to crush the bio force. That's textbook ZvT defense. The dropship interception was probably the killing blow.

During intense battles ZerO's APM was over 500+, that's what it takes to take out God! Incredible execution and magnificent defense. I never saw FlaSh so hopeless until this series if you watch his face closely.

In Game 5, why did Flash choose the other expo instead of his natural? I'm not very good at SC so I'm trying to figure out advantages of building in that spot.
Well, the casters explained it. Flash saw Zero going for a 2-hatch play, which could either be fast Mutalisks or another Lurker bust. By staying on high ground, he was immune to the Lurker bust, and with his early Valkyries, he had nothing to fear from the Mutalisks either, so whatever Zero could try was negated. The idea is, 2 hatch is an aggressive build, so Zero is going to fall behind if he cannot deal any damage with it.
Zero's win was a bit of a miracle, honestly. He committed to his Muta play (which you wouldn't expect against Valkyries) and somehow managed to trim the Valkyrie count with a couple of scourge hits until his Muta were able to take on the bio force.
@@GrandBenja Yeah, I didn't expect Zero to win at all. Zerg is my favorite race so it was great to see, but there were so, so, so, many moments where Zero's mutalisks were a hex away from a Valkrie volley. I'm in awe with his mutalisk control and ability to macro at the same time. To me, it seemed as if Zero had to basically stay glued to the mutalisk screen.

I've been watching BW for probably 12 years and I still don't think I understood half of what I saw in this series, esp game 1. Kinda wish the commentary was more focused more on the tactical and strategic aspects of the build orders and the mind games, cause I was at a complete loss for following how these games were gonna pan out.
There isn't much to say about game 1. Zero went for an aggressive pool first, 2-hatch Muta, didn't do any relevant damage because of the Valkyrie defence, and fell behind economically. He then tried to "cheat" his way out of his deficit by greedily droning up in his double expansion, but Flash scouted it and busted him.
I would guess Zero intended to go for the double expansion from the start. The idea is, pretend he is all-in on his early Mutalisks, just build a couple of them, trick Flash into playing defensively, and double expand while Flash is wasting his time building turrets. He used similar ideas in his ZvP games, with fake hydra busts into macro. But as I said, Flash scouted the expansions and went for the kill.
@@GrandBenja That's why I'm confused, why fake the mass mutas and then go mass mutas? I feel like there was a chance for him to move out of it into hydra lurker. Also, if he double expands, but just pulled the drones, he'd still be at three base. It was a bit strange to see the gg timing until you realize he must never have started lurker aspect and just let his drones die. Like I said, very confusing. Also, *SPOILERS* did Zero win the series, or did Flash lose the series. I really can't tell why in some of the games he didn't just go straight bio. I'm having flashbacks of when Fantasy was going Valk, he killed some games and lost others like he was just throwing spaghetti on a wall and seeing if it sticks.
@@sinepatre Zero himself might have been a bit confused too, as early valkyries isn't a common build either. He may not have expected Flash to keep building Valkyries; you usually just build a couple to fend off the Mutalisks. I think the problem with lurkers is that this map isn't so suited to them, because they can't defend the third and the fourth at the same time (unlike on maps where you can expand into a main and its natural). So after going for the double expansion, Zero was kinda committed to maintaining map control with Muta-lings.
As for the rest of the series, Flash made some mistakes, but I don't think his build was particularly at fault. In game 2, he moved out too early on a(n unfair) map that clearly favours Muta counter-attacks, putting himself in a losing position where he had to all-in at Zero's natural. In game 4, it was a scouting problem; he retreated his scv too early. And in game 5, he did, in fact, go bio. He probably would have won if Zero hadn't miraculously managed to trim the Valkyrie count. I love the way you phrased it though. "He was just throwing spaghetti on a wall and seeing if it sticks." check teamliquid for more 'insights', but most of TvZ or ZvT unless it's some bunker rush or hydra bust (which are map dependend), standard game is Z going 3hatch muta to stall the T in order to get 3rd gas and fend off him with lurker/ling and get hive tech(defiler) and T is trying to counter it with vessel/irradiate and going SK Terran (bio+vessel), unless it's old school timing marine+1 rush into natural. 1-1-1 or pure mech is map dependant. Fantasy's valkyrie was 'innovative' to counter muta, but then Z counter it with scourge (same with vessel) and we have a circle:). Blizz fixed the glitch in remastered that valks don't fire when amount of sprites reach the limit (255), but still vaks are expensive, hardly microable and need amout&time to deal dmg either way they are easily countered with scourge like vessel. Many 'build decisions' are map dependant and hence we don't have this big competetive scene like years ago (OSL/MSL/SPL) it's hard to follow their decisions
@@model84 streams help somewhat. amateur tournaments, but more basic there. as always, community conversation goes a ways. and many pros and other big talents do tutorials and FAQs (some of which are quite intensive, many translated)...it's different for sure but it's acquirable. In most ways, besides the rate of change, it seems easier to follow their decisions. if you've done the work.
