  • A brief history on these models and what are the differences?
    Update: the 9300 has no RIAA filter so if using a record player you will to either use one with a filter built in such as the beogram 4500 or use an inline RIAA.

    I've worked 36 for B&O. The BC 9300/9500 is in my option the best designed product ever made in Struer.

      They’re a lovely bit of kit for sure. I’ve just got a 9500 to hopefully repair :)

      I’ve owned a 9300 from new. It still is a great machine and probably has the most intuitive controls of any music system ever created.

    So ahead of their time , if they brought them out next year they'd still look futuristic

    Hi. Nice informative video, thanks. I have a 9300 and a 9500 and think they are both great machines. The 9300 I’ve owned for about 11 years and has been faultless apart from the usual tape deck belts which have failed, no doubt due to lack of use. It’s used with a set of BL8000’s and I think this pairing is one of the great B&O design highlights ever. I also run a Beogram 2202 (with external RIAA) and an Apple airport express for streaming into the 9300. It’s got the brushed aluminium panels and it is in immaculate condition. I was also very lucky to have been given a 9500 about 2 years ago which again is immaculate but also needs new tape deck belts. Both its front glass panels are a little loose so it’s currently only getting occasional use in the bedroom with some passive speakers. It’s got the mirror panels. My intention is to get them both serviced professionally somewhere as I know absolutely nothing about electronics. I know with age that various capacitors etc can fail so I would like them both checked over and serviced as required. Do you undertake your own repairs or can you recommend a specialist repairer? Your 8500 looks really special on that stand and they compliment each other well. Regarding sound comparison, I’ve tried the 9300 and 9500 side by side using exactly the same tone and volume settings with the BL8000. On paper they are different machines but to my 50+ ears they sound the same. I may try a blind test sometime with some friends just for interest. Sorry for rambling on. Thanks again.

      I agree, to me they sound the same too. The 9300 has the same output stage as the 9500 and 8500 the main differences are to do with the pre amp and CD mechs.
      Your tape deck probably needs lubrication and new belts. My spindles get jammed in mine, the tape comes back to life when I wiggle the spindles to free them off then it’s fine!... really I need to do a tear down on the tape and lubricate it.
      In terms of capacitors etc... I’ve always been wary of going in and just changing a load of capacitors. Like if it’s working and sounds nice then it’s all good! The older stuff and any red caps are sometimes the weak points of older systems but I’ve found the trim pots to be particularly troublesome in all amps. The current trimmers can go open circuit in older Beomasters and blow the power amp or cause it to go into protection. (Shut off when it’s getting hot)
      Couple of options with the panel. The best is to strip all the old foam tape off (careful on the glass as you don’t want to remove the black paint) and replace with the same thickness 3m foam tape.
      Second option which is easier but not so good is people do is glue with thick superglue gel. With the tape you can remove the glass with a screw in the bottom left (I think) of the player. It then slides to the left and can be removed. They’ll be four plastic trim pieces which will just come off. Attach the trim to the glass at both ends and then do the middle bits and re install as one unit.
      I’ve not really gone much into this 8500 as I’ve not found any need to. I did have a 9000 which had a failed capacitor on the CD. c104 if I remember. But on the later machines I believe this isn’t an issue.

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The thickness for the foam tape you need is probably approx 1mm x 5mm but check it first of course.

      @@chrisbaker121924 Hi again. Thanks for your very informative reply. I have read on other sites about people gluing the glass panels back in place but, like you, I really don’t think that’s a good idea. If they were meant to be glued down then surely B&O would have done that in the first place. Regarding the tape deck(s), to be honest I’m not so bothered about neither of them working, it’s just that I like to have everything working as it should. Can’t remember the last time I actually needed to play a tape. I believe the 9500 deck is especially good however, so maybe I’ll try to at least get that one fixed sometime. You’re right about the internal electronics too, if it ain’t broke........as the saying goes. Nonetheless I would like to get the 9500 checked over as I need to move it to a more prominent place in my house where it would be used a lot more. It’s kind of under appreciated just sitting in the bedroom. On paper the 9500 cd should sound better as it’s a 16 bit(?) unit, the 9300 unit is 1 bit. I guess 16 bit is better but to my ears anyway no difference. Thanks again.

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah the 1 bit DAC... it’s not worse than a 16bit it just works a little differently. I’m not really massively clued up on how they work but essentially it isn’t worse. Just a different way of doing it. I think it samples a lot higher (like in the MHz rather than 44.1khz) but not sure!
      At the end of it all the weak part of the chain is nearly always the moving a paper cone in an out of the speaker 😅

      @@chrisbaker121924 In my case the weakest part is the oldest component stood with the Beo4 in his hand (me) 😄.
      Beautiful Beosystem 8000 at the start of your video by the way. It looks immaculate and I’m sure is a pleasure to own. I have an old Beocentre 7002 from around the same era. Bullet proof build quality but big and very heavy. Is your interest mainly around the Jacob Jensen/David Lewis eras or are the newer products also appealing? For me the newer items not so much , mainly due to the price but also concerns about reliability and dealers dropping out of business like flies. Covid only exasperating that situation sadly.
      I’ll probably subscribe to your channel in case you upload any more B&O related videos. Thanks

    My family owns a beocenter... I think it's 8500. Unfortunately, the cd doors have problem opening... I went to BO to seek help, but they said they can't help because BO discontinued the model, meaning that they don't have spare parts to sell. And other 3rd party repairers refuse to repair my beocenter because just the act of opening up the hood of the beocenter would just cause the plastic pci semiconductor boards to crumble. So my beocenter just sits in my living room picking up dust.

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t know who told you the boards would crumble… thats a bit ridiculous. I think both B&O and the repair centre are just making excuses because they can’t be bothered.
      The doors are actually not that hard to fix, they’ll be dust in the tracks and the whole mechanism will just need a clean. It’s pulled along by metal wire a bit like finishing line around a series of pulleys, over time the grease hardens and moves aside from the places it needs to be and the tracks will have accumulated dust and dried grease and the doors are getting stuck.
      Fairly easy fix if you’re gentle and take your time.

      @@chrisbaker121924 I always wondered how to open the hood of this beocenter as it seems I am left to my own devices in terms of attempting to repair this machine. I have seen pictures of the beocenter with the hood open with the internal boards exposed to view. But never saw anyone actually open one in real life...

    How would one go about connecting a modern record player to a Beocenter 9000? If its possible at all.
    I found a RCA to 5 Pin DIN. Would this work if its plugged into the phono or Aux sockets and the RCA to the record player? I know the 9000 uses 7 pin DINs but ive heard they are backwards compatible.

    • @chrisbaker121924
      @chrisbaker121924  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep you can plug a 5 pin din into the 7 pin socket. The outer most pins are for data signals so on a non-B&O player not required.
      On a 9000 they do have a built in RIAA filter, so if your deck doesn’t have a filter onboard you can plug it into the phono socket.
      If your deck does have a filter onboard you can plug it into the aux.
      Them RCA to 5 pin male DINs should work great :)
