My problem with chinatown was that you can often mathematically calculate exact how much any given tile or space is likely to pay out over the whole game, and there's no point in paying too much or too little to someone to make that happen Much prefer negotiation in games where it's not so obvious what something is worth like Zoo Vadis or Cosmic Encounter
Chinatown was perfectly fine. Nobody asked for a remake with a stupid, nonsensical theme. If theme isnt important, why have one at all? Negotiate over spreadsheet squares. Chinatown was super smooth and not fiddly at all unlike this game with its unnecessary plastic bits. I dont know why they always feel the need to mess with classics and retheme them usually into less appealing themes. Why stop there? Lets re-theme other classics. Lets make carcassonne about building a barbie funland. Or, lets make Twilight Struggle not about the cold war, but about to teams of zoo animals vying for control of the zoo. See how stupid and unecessary this is? Just give people what they want. People asked for a reprint with maybe slightly updated art, maybe up the component quality a hit and that was it! Not every game has to be redone to make it about fantasy theme parks or zoo animals to make it as generic and vanilla as possible so theres no way it can possibly offend anyone. Well guess what, there will always be someone that will find something to be offended about.
