Playing 1000 hours of 7th Continent kept me sane during the pandemic so I have deep affection for it and wondered if 7th Citadel would live up to those memories. Turns out that 7th Citadel is even more awesome. Really enjoying the slightly more focused and guided experience.
Its Easily Citadel for me, its much more focus, there far less aimless wandering, and so far theres been no grind. It work WAY better for me as a multi player game. Continent offered nothing, but the split decks, deciding who should try what tasks etc offer new choices and decisions. Yeah we are making them as a group. but it still feels there a reason for the other players. I grew to hate Continent after LOVING the initial excitment of the first explore. Every new curse just felt like covering old ground. So far at least . Each new scenario has a clear aim, and yeah i might have to cover some old ground but so far i dont feel im having to grind life to cover that ground
My wife and I are having a great time with 7th Citadel - we eventually quit 7th Continent because of the repetitive grind and lack of clear direction. Things a perfect fix!
Thank you for this video! I own both as of this week and havent played either. Most of the info i find says to forego continent and only play citadel. I like your explanation. I think ill play continent first bc my favorite thing is exploring!
I really liked 7th Continent, but the base curses were too long, or too insignificant, and they all were way too vague. Yeah i could wander the whole map(and i did), hunting and fishing, and finding interesting locations, but barely anything moved the plot forward, and once it did, it was over in a second. You either won or lost. The island was cool to explore once or twice but on the 3rd or 4th time i was just going for the goal, i knew where everything were, and i knew what to do, so i did it and it was no fun anymore. I didn't much care for the crafting or survival elements, but i did love the world. With 7th Citadel, the world is as interesting as in it's predecessor. The story giving you real directions whithout explicitely telling you where you need to do the thing is nice, i'm not just wandering around aimlessly. Every chapter has it's goals, and they send you to a different part of the map to explore. You get side objectives too, so even more goals to strive towards. And you don't explore the whole protectorate in a single campaign. I've barely been south of the citadel, i've not exhausted every possibility in the places i've been to. And even if you go to an area you've already explored, you might encounter something different there thanks to the flag system. You might not even finish the campaign the same way as before. There are branching paths. Characters are very similar in both games, so i don't get how they had more personality in 7th Continent. You get different items, sure, but they are basically the same, depending on how you build them. I found the story in 7th Citadel more engaging, even though the setting of Continent for me is better. The dialogue book helps Citadel a lot on that front. There's a lot of lore, and little puzzles and side stuff to explore. It's a much better game to replay than Continent. Systems work better too. I don't much like the luck cards either, but they can create interesting scenarios, and i've never lost a chapter just because of an unlucky draw. There's not just one chance, and you're done. If you fail your luck, you can go somewhere else and either try again, or try a diffenrent way, and i appreciate that. Overall i would say Citadel is a much better game than Continent in almost every way.
I loved the theme and mystery of 7th Continent so so much but the new less grindy system is just so much better. The dialog booklet, side-quests, and home base building is really well done and a lot of fun. My couple complaints with 7th citadel is that there isn't really any benefit to doing actions together making it feel less co-opish, and it seems like every game starts you on the same 75 tile whereas 7th continent could start you anywhere on the island which was great. I wonder how and if the map changes up at all across threats or if i'll be exploring the same tiles
Does anyone know whether the save system is better in this version? I could never get into 7th Continent because of it's save system - I fully recognize that may sound dumb to many of you but I need a game that I can easily put away and then pick back up a month later and 7th Continent was never that game for me.
Have both, haven't played Citadel yet. Expect they'll release another box of content for it like they did for Continent. I do agree that these are best played solo, at least in my opinion. They remind me of my childhood and reading those Fighting Fantasy books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone. (Damn, I just looked up Fighting Fantasy and people want crazy money for them now)
I like both games, but I also understand why many people dislike the system. I think Citadel is definitely more approachable and has a much gentler learning curve, but I think that at the end of the day I'd still give a small edge to the Continent - it's raw and bloated and obtuse and overly punishing, but all of that gives it special charm that is somehow lost in its more polished built-to-crowd-please successor.
I prefer the ambiguity of 7th Continent. The curses didn't explicitly tell you what to do, you had to work it out, whereas 7th Citadel feels more directed. I prefer the chain system in Citadel over the lock system in Continent though. I think overall I prefer the feel of Continent, but it's a close thing.
Thanks for the video. I backed 7th Citadel THEN bought 7th Continent only to regret both actions. I've had 7th Citadel in a box for a few weeks w/ almost no interest in opening it due to how bad 7th Continent was for me.
thx for this great Comparison. But what's not quite clear to me about the product placement (from Serious Poulp)... if I want a ‘7th’ with a story, why do I need a ‘7th Citadel’ at all? Then, as a gamer, it's best to go straight to Tainted Grail... Here I have a mega cool story and even more... And if you still haven't had enough, you can try Aeon Trespass: Odyssey^^
For me 7th Continent is the best. It is a one of its kind game and felt perfect for me. In 7th Citadel I think they just copied a lot from other popular games like Gloomhaven or Sleeping Gods and it doesn't feel like anything new or special. For me they killed all the exploring fun.
I have to emphasize how much worse 7th Continent is for multiplayer. You would have to always decide who is the active player for each action, and whether everyone was involved or not. That would affect subsequent actions that might appear in the cards. The issue is, if you fail an action with multiple people involved, you get Paranoid. So, it actually mattered whether multiple people were involved or not. Thing is, it's just not fun to have to, for each action we want to do, decide who is doing it, and whether that person is alone or we are together. It breaks the flow of the game a bit. Often I would grab the card, then it would have a follow-up action that only the active player could take, and turn out the action requires skills that my sister would be good to help me with. And then we would say "wait, was I alone or were you with me"?. It was just, in my opinion, clunky, and not very fun, and I would bet most people didn't play it correctly 100% of the time, it was so easy to forget, to get lost in the game and not do this artificial thing. I am glad that is gone!

Did you replay 7th continent or is the full content 1000 hours long?
@@sedraniM We replayed some of the curses but the full content is very long if you fully explore.
@@RubyRevolution2015 Cool! Thanks!

That is a very insightful review! 😀
Tom’s shirt is 10/10 for me!

I know 7th Citadel is one of your favorite games!

Me too. I like 7th Citadel, but I was much more drawn to the feverish Continent's world than Citadel's high fantasy worms vs plants one.

i grew to hate citadel . i think continent is worth an explore depending on wht you dislike it ..citadel is way better focused abd lost the grind
I cant believe Tom put out a video thats half about how hed rather olay alone than with his kids. 😂

I really strongly disliked 7th continent. It was a game of “memory” on steroids. Glad to see this is different.
