“Besides, I tried. They came back.” That is an understatement. He throw them into the middle of the ocean. A huge fuck off sized wave knocked him out. He awoke with them beside him, dripping sea water. With a fish skewered on one blade. They caused a tsunami to get back to him.
I think that was actually Poseidon who did that. All on Olympus knew the Blades story and the tie to Kratos. Plus when he wanted to get rid of them he was still in service of the gods. The blades were the only seal they had on him. Thats why when Kratos goes to kill them in 3rd game the blades are no longer appearing.
@@ExtremeMan10 I think that instance of him trying to get rid of the Blades happened after GoW3, between then and when he eventually found his way to Midgarde. So Poseidon was dead by that point.
@@robertnoble7554 Because he still *had* the blades. They were at his home, so technically they were still in his possession the whole time. He's cursed to always have them around. So he can never get rid of them by doing things like throwing them into the ocean or burying them.
4:01 Atreus: Father... what's the biggest thing you've ever fought? Kratos: Your great grandfather. He tried to eat me like your grandfather so I slits his stomach open and then I stabbed him in the head.
We know why Kratos avoids answering what is the biggest thing he fought, his grandfather Cronos. Wonder if Kratos ever told Atreus about his past family?
He did tell him about Cronos indirectly by confirming he has killed a giant, and that he killed his father Zeus, as for Calliope and his previous wife probably not, I can imagine Atreus trying to convince Kratos to go back to greece and try to get her out of the underworld
Although Kratos has plenty of his own merit to thank for his achievements, luck definitely played some part in his story, especially early on when he lacked that power that he wields later on in the original Saga, or the skill and discipline in the Norse world. Had Ares ignored his pleas, that would have been the end of Krato's story then and there. There are probably other places where the assistance of others or plain dumb luck saved his ass or played a large part in furthering his own goals.
Honestly, Kratos would prefer to chop his hands of and eat them before let another kid go through the spartan training. He literally hate the fact he has to go through it and see parents put their child through it as well just to be came soldiers and been throw at the meat grinder by Olympians like Zeus, Poseidon, Hades and Ares.
The toughest Spartan Warrior and General, recognizing that the agoge is... not really good. But Atreus will also hate considering the time a student will study it. 7 years old to 30, and he will still be considered to be a "boy" before 30 which is frowned by the Vikings.
It could also be interpreted as Kratos believing that atreus didn't need such extreme training to become a great warrior. Either way, a very sweet dad moment.
Kratos: My strength does not come from my body, but both are honed by discipline Atreus: What's that mean? Mimir: It means do you even lift little brother?
A man who once thought there was no other worthy path then that of a ruthless warrior, now realizing that there is a deep price to be paid to become that kind of weapon.
Mimir: “There was an issue with Viscera” Viscera: the internal organs in the main cavities of the body, especially those in the abdomen, e.g. the intestines, reproductive organs Aka Either: Kratos Ding Dong kept hitting Mimir when he was put in the front instead of the back. Or : Dead bodies kept getting their guts on Mimir
Speaking of the four parts of the soul, Kratos has a great body, an incredible mind, and let's face it he's been pretty lucky at times even though he wouldn't admit it. So that means he would most likely be missing direction, since he felt lost before killing the Pantheon, and even more lost afterwards
I wonder if souls work in Greek mythology in a similar way to Norse, if so maybe he lost a part or 2 each time he died? Seems doubtful as person caused tension between Greek & Semitic Speaking Christians early on, but I'm open to it.
@@TeeComedian I don’t think a soul as a term even existed in Greek mythology. Even in death,it was not the person’s soul that was carried to the underworld, but rather the person himself.
It's pretty amazing how seamlessly they made the relationship between these two blossom while they remain themselves. Kratos more easily praises Atreus and sees him as a comrade rather than a subordinate, especially at the end. Atreus is more confident and the conversations between them are easy and relaxed, especially compared to the first game. The moments of Kratos gently teasing him are more frequent. It's a sad, dark game at times but with these two, it's so uplifting and hopeful.
@@doomyboi It's such a silly, simple little conversation. You wouldn't hear it in the first game: Atreus wouldn't be that relaxed with his father and his father wouldn't know how to be relaxed back. That conversation is, I think, right up there with the beard conversation ("I think my beard's coming in!" "Is it?" "Yeah, see, on my jawline!" ".......... is it?") as just... some banter between a father and son. Not a young god and an elder god, not a general and his subordinate, not even a Spartan and his son. Just... a dad ribbing his son for being silly and maybe a little bit whiny.
It would be funny if one time Kratos tried to get rid of the blades of exile/or chaos they came back by hitching a ride with a recently thrown Leviathan
I mean you're not far off. I believe he tried tossing them into the sea from a boat, only for the boat to flip from...a storm? Or just bad waves otherwise? I forget, but either way when he washed up ashore again, so too did the blades right next to him
@@Ghostly_One1 yup he even throw them away and walked for miles until they just appeared again.. i wonder if its a curse or someone is bringing them back to him

2:10 this was a whole thing in the GOW comics; he literally tried throwing them in the ocean at one point, and at another point just outright ignoring them....but those blades kept coming back, and/or out right following him... 3:06 i think at this point, atreus realized he cant imagine/picture kratos really teaching him "music", or at worse, hed be extra critical... imagine that movie whiplash but with an actual battle hardened dad
I like to think that 90% of these questions are just questions Fans have been asking since all the way back at GoW 1, and they're taking this as a chance to answer them all in-universe.
Or that one time he fought a giant walking statue? Or that time he beats up a poor gentleman's face and cause a giant flood because he killed the poor gentleman? Or he cut off someone's leg for those nice air force 1 shoes for running?
I like how Atreus sees not the power in the blades, but his father's pain over using them. So often he brings up wanting to be strong, and these are mighty weapons. To recognize the mental burden they represent shows he's learning.
"Even hateful things have their uses. Besides I tried... they came back" In the God of War: A New Beginning (2018) novelization, Kratos cannot get rid of the Blades of Chaos at all. He dumped them into the sea, the waters rejected them, destroyed his boat and lied next to him when he awoke on Midgard's shores. Fallen God shows more of his attempts to get rid of them, it didn't work...
Nah he actually thinks about it and able to differentiate between good or bad But the thing is it do not concern him whether it's good or bad Simply he just dgaf
@@TradingWorl_d i wouldnt say he doesnt gaf...rather he sees alot of grey area, and still makes choices based on himself, and the ppl around him..... Very grounded in that aspect if you notice; He wont get into fights or issues that arent his business...unless they affect the ppl around him...and even then he wont help unless askes... All hell will break loose for the sake of his kids... He doesnt go looking for trouble, but often gets into trouble due to circumstances(in these games anyway) This is a guy who KNOWS right and wrong but chooses to do what he wants...
The sadness in Kratos voice when asked about the hot gates. For those who don't know, that's the battle of thermoplae, or the 300 Spartans. The Persians are lucky Kratos wasn't there.
@@hansalanson3497 it's a historical battle, but the numbers are fudged. There were only 300 Spartans, but about 3000 other Greeks. They still held the pass outnumbered 30 to 1, until the Persians found the goat path. At that point, when all hope was lost, Leonidas sent the rest away and the 300 stayed behind. They lasted the day, but were all slaughtered. They genuinely could have held the narrow pass for much longer if the Persians didn't discover the way behind them.
That part literally confirmed the fact that G.O.W took place on ±400 B.C, and that there were probably a distinction between the God's "Earth/Midgard", and the actual Earth/Midgard.
The story of Thrym, The Giant King, who stole Thor's hammer is actually really funny. In the end, Thor had to wear a wedding dress and pretend to be Freya to get his hammer back. I was hoping the game would reference it in one way or another.
@@hersheedenwerf if i remember correctly, was Loki who tricked Baldr's blind brother to shoot him with a mistletoe arrow, and since he wanted to be part of the fun and did not know was mistletoe (cuz... Could not see), he unknowingly was his brother's demise.
@@mamacoloco7285 i was refering to baldr's blind brother killing him unwillingly. :) But thanks for the info, actually thought Loki was adopted. Guess was relying too much on the Marvel version
I really love the little conversations they have, the devs really tried to make this game as alive as possible,I definitely think it's going to win best game of the year 2022
2:07 it may not seem like much, but this right there explains to me why only the blades of chaos came with him to Midgard. Why the blade of Olympus or the golden fleece or anything else stayed.
You know with how dejected Atreus sounded in the harp dialogue, you know Kratos is gonna have someone build him the best harp and have the best teach it to him.
It’s had its ups and downs I mean he killed his own wife and daughter and his brother was stolen from him and died within minutes of finding him again…. But hey at least he smashed Aphrodite
Depends on how you look at luck, like Nathan Drake has the awful luck of hanging from a wrecked train over a cliff but the amazing luck of being able to climb out of it without falling to his death. The circumstances are unlucky but the opportunities for success sorta fall into their laps lol
i like Mimir saying you gotta lift even as a god which implies that Zeus, who was somehow even buffer than Kratos was a giga lifter. Zeus with a toga labeled "Gains" and his chalice boy brings him protein shakes instead of wine
Upload the boat conversations with Freya to TH-cam. The boat conversations with her are more interesting because she asks about kratos past most of the time so the conversations with her are alot more interesting.
Imagine if he told them on how he killed the Greek gods, taking Hades soul,Poking Poseidon's eyes and snapping his neck, forcefully Ripping off Helio's head and make into a lamp, cutting Hermes legs
For those who don’t know, in the God Of War Book. Kratos, on a boat towards the Norse, threw his Blades at the sea. The sea then responded by toppling a wave on him, destroying his boat. He then awoken on the beaches of Midgard with his blades next to him.
Termophilae is canon? Another guess from what era Kratos could be. He couldn't be in the Hot Gates for the second war against Persia (but he battled persians, maybe for the first), but he is also a paralel with Archimedes of Syracuse. This things are supposed to happen when he was still ignorant of his godhood.
@@gamechanger8908 Maybe he was alredy the God of War when Termophylae happened. As the same the rest of the Spartan Army couldn't go to war for a religius festivity that prohibited its movilization, Kratos couldn't get down and intervine (like he did in Rhodes) because the other gods also where prohibited to fight for or against mortals who were celebrating their honours... Another reason why Kratos would grew tired of the way the gods of Olympus resolve their matters.
I honestly felt that it was a wasted opportunity to have the button mashing of O to open a chest. Kratos now can do it easily, but Atreus? It could make sense and be fanservice
Man the stuff that happens when your traveling is so entertaining especially mimirs story’s it’s great and the dialogue it’s why I love this game something to keep you entertained while traveling
Damn it, just when I though the dialogues ON LAND we're good (at least the scripted ones) these boat stories (I know they're not boat exclusive) are just...awesome.
There's something funny about Kratos partaking in small talk, even if they're just one word sentences. "Father. Will I ever grow a beard like yours?" "No."
@@zed6740 yes, he went to a small village where everywhere was scared shirtless of him because what he did to Greece had spread to other parts of the world. He had to fight a giant hippo monster, got his ass kicked a bit by it until Athena and Hoth appeared before him and told him he had to embrace his destiny to which be got pisssed grabbed rhe blades of chaos, which he had tried to through into the ocean but whenever he slept they returned, and killed the hippo and then he left ans traveled north
I find it interesting that Kratos going through Spartan training and opting against putting his son through the same very much ressembles the refining of current military training. It may not be perfect, but hardship without brutality makes for far better adjusted warriors in the long term, and is a worthy goal.
"Did you think i couldn't handle it?" "I do not think you should have had to." That's how my dad is with teaching me. We need to learn yes and it may be hard, but it shouldn't be torture to learn like our parents may have. He had a very rough life till he married and it made him really try and give us joy as much as lessons. Love my dad.
Y’know, I kinda find it interesting how Atreus asked Kratos what monsters he’s fought & who was the biggest he conquered. Remind me: Not counting Hephaestus, Clotho, the Colossus of Rhodes, the Hand of Hecatonchire & maybe Cronos, didn’t Kratos take down a whole-ass giant kraken in GoW: Ascension?
2:00 what an awsome refrence to the ending of God of war 3 he tosses his blades away during the final encounter with zeus and starts to beat him up with his fists.
Atreus: Father, when will I look like you? Kratos: (oh fuck he's gonna ask) Kratos: in what way? Atreus: Like, BIGGER. When will I get muscles like yours? Kratos: (phew)
"Besides, I tried. They came back." The blades may not come when Kratos calls, but they really do just... follow him around, basically. Always end up back with him even if he tries to get rid of them, so the best he can do is just hang them up or hide them.
So wait, this game takes place after the battle of Thermopylae in 480 bce. So how long has Kratos been away from Greece? What era is this game even in?
According to Cory barlog the new gow games takes place in the era prior to the viking exploration age, which sets the game around 500 to 600 ad if I'm correct, so Kratos is likely almost 1200 years old. I now want atreus to call him a boomer. I know it's not periodically accurate, but still.
@@gamechanger8908 the Trojan war was around 1200 to 1300 bc, the exact date is debated, and ragnarok is sometime are 500 to 600 ad, so that means Kratos is almost 2000 years old.
6:44 theres a part where theres more interesting dialogue on the rig, mimir says "work or die isnt much of choice" after how he talks about how the dwarves agreed to the terms by him making it seem fine and atreus says something about how they could have just not agreed, prompting kratos to say that they made their choice. Then mimir says the "work or die isnt a choice" part

Honestly, the pressence of Kratos in that battle would make the "300 against thousands" part way more believable.
