My father worked at the Comstock Dexter in 1936. It’s a gold mine. During the Depression, the government raised the price of gold and it made it possible to reopen the mine. Those “house pads” were for tent houses. I really liked the drone video. Large pad was Bunk House for miners. There used to be a bar up on the ridge along side the road to the Hillside Mine.

Oh wow that’s really cool that your father worked there. Yes I actually have a video about that bar on my channel as well. :) and it’s really a shame that the hillside mine has been reclaimed so badly to a point that they buried everything and none of its left :(

The assay crucible is what you melt the ore and flux in. This flux contains borax, soda ash ,silica and litharge. Lead oxide. This all gets melted together and you pour it into a cone mold. The litharge upon heating and oxidizing will collect the metals in the ore sample and will collect together at the bottom of the cone mold. After waiting for the pour to cool you remove tap with a hammer to remove the slag or glass place lead into cupel. Most of your lead is drawn into the cupel leaving a bright shiny precious metal bead behind. That is then weighed and parted in dilute HNO3 (nitric) acid. The silver will dissolve, leaving the gold. How to assay 101:) The cupel does not go in the crucible. What a hike! Great video!

I was part of an extensive archaeological survey in 1992-3 that covered most of the mesas and canyons surrounding the Bagdad mine. It was incredibly beautiful but very dangerous. It was dense with animals, sites, minerals, heat, cold, heat, cold, lol. We also shared the road with the world's biggest dump trucks going 55mph. There was no contact with the outside world once we left the road and no rescue for days if the vehicle broke down.

Another AMAZING video about the abandoned mines in AZ! In my opinion these mines should be protected as World Heritage Sites list by the U.N. and by U.S. law. These mines are amazing and give so much insight into the production process of the 19th century, unfortunately they are mostly unknown by the public and far away from any transportation, so only few people even know, they exist (Rock hunters and metal detectors do know always more! 😉) Thank you guys so much for the video and insofar working into that direction!
P.s.: You guys are hilarious! Almost like Harry and Sally, very entertaining!!

At about 14:37 you say "that bush is kind of yucky". ;8) The "yucky" yucca. It was nice to see the yucca in it's native environment. Yeah, I know it's a rock show but, plants are cool too!

Thanks for sharing your adventures. I have been in mining most of my life. All hard rock mining. My wife and I go rock hunting all the time. Its cool to see that you go to a lot of the same places we have been. The Redding California area's are great. You should check it out. Lots of mining history.

Likely a sand snake but best to be sure always with the resemblance to other more dangerous types. Just discovered you today and already spent hours looking at your videos. I'm in Prescott so I'm familiar with most of the areas you go to at least by name. Very interesting stuff. I've always had an interest in rocks, gems and geology. I like the way you are about your interests. Funny and a little different. Quite pretty also. See ya!

I am a bit too up in years to try that now but always found climbing up while hard more reassuring than going down.Guessing foot placement and when you slide you slide! Nice video you two.

Doesn't burn off. It melts and separates the metals in layers at the bottom of the crucible.

when climbing up a steep slope such as that, turn your feet to the side, gives a better base in which to stand on, and kind of wiggle them into the hill side, to get a better purchasel

I think it is a baby bull snake. But just hatched so colors and stripes can be different from adults. Could be king snake too.

I find it very hard to believe that a geologist doesn't carry a rock hammer with herself when out and about in the desert
