About time they are starting to crack down on tourists who think they are above the law. Some people are of the opinion that because the quiet and polite they won’t say anything. Thanks again for the video. Keep living the good life.
I'm 61 myself, and I can't......fathom any breathing human my age who is NOT special needs having to be told you don't vandalize while on vacation or any other time. That is a special brand of idiot.
Incredible that a 65 year old man could be so stupid to do such a thing. He hasn't learnt much in his life has he! Sadly, this stuff will end up reflecting on all non Japanese and will make life there difficult.
As an American, I promise you will never catch me doing any stupid stuff like that or anything else. I love Japan and I did not not want to do anything like that when I was there. I love torii gates!
The 65 year old could face a fine of one million yen which is only around $6k or 10 years in prison. I really think the perp needs to get the 10 years to send a message not only to him but to any other American or other tourists what happens when they disrespect Japanese culture. The other kid who was lighting fires should receive prison time too. Over here in the US, it's almost lawless in some cities. Thank God, it's not the same in Japan. It's a beautiful country to which I want to return as soon as possible.
The people like that are part of the reason my wife and I are thinking about moving to Japan from America. Lotta selfish people here that don't respect one another. Even if it's only half as good as folks get on about it'd be a big upgrade.
@17 hours after posting this vid. says there are 8 comments, only 4 which i can see. i think it very good that you began the vid. in front of a shrine, better for those unfamiliar to have greater understanding.
This is why we cannot have nice things or be freer because there are always the handful of people who say "I don't care!" and they ruin life and the world for the rest of us.
At 65 you're supposed to know better. If a temple has been around for centuries, the reason it's not covered in graffiti, is because no one does it. Common sense. Next time you want to write, 'Kilroy was here' on something just ask if you can take a picture instead.
The thing is, when a Japanese police officer finds out you're a foreigner, even if you look Japanese and have no foreign accent, they will request your alien registration card. If you don't have it with you, you could get into trouble, even if you've done nothing wrong and are completely innocent.😅
The 65 year old vandal is a lawyer. But dont stop, please tell us about the Aussie lawyer who ran out of cash & held up a convenience store near his house in Japan . Or the Aussies who came to Japan specifically to spray paint trains!😢 All wete locked up.
If I knew about them I would have talked about them. I heard a story today about an Australian grandmother who was bringing drugs into the country and got caught. She won’t be doing that again. I was just talking about ones that were on the news last week.
Dude would probably be screaming murder if someone keyed his car. A fine of say $ 50,000 dollars and a couple of years in jail. No excuse for what he did. If he was in a muslim country and did that to a mosque his head would be sent back home separately.
@@larrikinjapan it got me interested, and this is what i found by googling: "刑事事件における逮捕と勾留の期間は、最長で23日間です。逮捕から72時間以内に勾留の判断がなされ、勾留が認められると10日間の拘留が開始されます。10日後にさらに勾留の延長が認められる場合があり、最長で20日間の勾留が可能です。" so, once you get arrested, police has 72 hours to decide whether to keep you detained, and if they deem detention is necessary they can prolong detention for up to 10 or 20 days; also, it looks like you can request a lawyer immediately (they can even give you a publicly funded one)
@@larrikinjapan I heard it is about a month. Then you appear with a lawyer for a plea; then remain in detention until the trial is completed. And I believe they make you work in prison and follow a strict routine. I would not want to do something stupid over their to find out.

2nd comment ( to help the channel) i have been locked up in japan for 12 days and also have had several other interactions with police. i was locked up about 18mnths after 1st arriving in japan, i was very young. the other couple of occurrences were once when the Japanese were being racist towards non japanese i was involved in a sort of low key scuffle, the japanese showed their racism towards me, and after many hours at the cop shop i was finally let go, feeling slightly vindicated as the main racist japanese would get no sleep before work whereas i had a late start. 2 other occasions i was fighting with yanks, both times i was protecting or warning japanese from americans. 1st time was u.s. military personal were being violent towards some japanese and also damaging their motorbike, there was a giant circle of ppl watching, with nearly half being u.s. military ( in civvies) an old japanese women standing next to me shouted out " ( nihonjin daro !! jibun o mamorenasai or something very similar) i said to her" gomenasai subette na gaijin ga so iu hito janai yo". when the yanks kicked over the local boys expensive looking m.bike i walked into the middle of the giant circle ( in a shotengai) and tried to pick up the bike, in a typical japanese way of quiet stoic solidarity. The main yank aggressor shoved me shouting at me insults including saying how he thought i should be on his side, typical yank making the wrong assumption. this caused me to kinda softly drop the bike, i ignored him and again tried to pick up the bike, then he punched me once, as an aussie no more typical yank chin wagging, time smash, so i got him 1 good return punch when his 2 shadows ( there were three in total, shaka zulus kin) smashed me to the ground, luckily for me, yanks of my skin tone then jumped in to help me. the japanese cops and everyone involved were shocked that an aussie would help them over yanks. and i could speak decent japanese as well, so i was like a unicorn amidst 5000 yanks(in that yank military base town), which made me standout even more. there were 8 cops standing around me hearing the story with incredulity, later at the cop shop 1 felt he still had to deliver the law and said nippon de wa naguratemo te dasu no wa dame, iho! kinshi! nagurikaeshi wa yurusan!! this was the most upsetting of the whole affair as i WAS THE ONLY 1 WHO STEPPED IN TO HELP. and as tears of disappointment and anger appeared i angrily said nidotto hihongin o tasukemasen .overall i know i did good and a detective whom i had already befriended due to another incident with the yanks told me " anato to nippon wa ao, zutto koko ni sundedatara do desuka ? " i was proud to be an aussie and proud to represent my country so well. in japan i had many many yank friends both military and non military.

Should have charge extra tourism fees based on country of origin for the additional compliance costs.
Since 2012 or so everywhere I have been there are tourists that would ruin things for others.
It's not just respect they lack, but common sense.

I know a lot of Americans who live here and they only have respect for the Japanese culture. It’s just a few bad apples.

Guys like this and Johnny Somili are giving tourists a bad reputation.
You’re right
Put him in jail.
One thing you notice right away traveling in the US is that Americans paint, carve, or write on everything, and they do it everywhere.
The Democrats let BLM and Antifa (Neo-Nazis) deface and even tear down our statues of our "forefathers" and American heroes. This has got to stop!
This is why we cannot have nice things or be freer because there are always the handful of people who say "I don't care!" and they ruin life and the world for the rest of us.
Is there a meme of Ralph from the Simpson's saying, "I'm exceptional"?😅

The tori is the gateway to the everyday world to the sacred. So it's more akin to writing graffiti on the gate into heaven.
