It was completely inspired by all the female surrealist painters like Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo. There’s a little bit of Frida Kahlo in there, too.
Alex J Obviously the visuals are also inspired by the song itself, which was written by Bjork, Nellee Hooper, and Marius Devries. The director is the greatest creative force in the video, however, not Madonna, who is only singing and acting here, and he is clearly drawing from the world of surrealist painting (which is all about the unconscious mind and its imagery).

I remember when I saw this video for the first time on VH1 back in 2008, I was literally left with my mouth open. It was the best audiovisual experience of my life and it subsequently influenced me greatly in my work.
It was a different era. Madge was queen and the world was okay, andthe things that werent felt like there was a chance things would get even better, and now look where we are. Ray of Light was like Madonna's Dark Side of The Moon, or Kid A, or Sargeant Peppers.
Her doing a collaboration with current artists who are in experimental music would be great: Thom Yorke - Everything In its Right Place, James Blake - Wilhelm Scream, Kanye, FKA - Twigs, Aphex Twin - Ambient album, Arca, Anthony Keidis, Frank Ocean, Massive Attack - Teardrop, Portishead - Glory Box, Kaskade & Deadmau5, she could even do a Kabbalistic inspired tune with Matisyahu or a Hindu tune with Anushka Shankar in Sitar. It would be so cool to see Madonna have some drone music or Post-Rock collaboration with Sígur Ros, maybe a collaboration with Cinematic Orchestra, or even Electrosynthpop AltRnb with Little Dragon, or an ambient rap with Drake.
Maybe she could even do Sufi Music and collaborate with Scott Matthews, or do something so unusual. There are so many intriguing musical journeys she could take!
And modern day singers like Beyonce who have become more experimental, and Sia who was in Zero 7 and performed ambient chillout music like Destiny.
Waiting for the next creative experiment from Madonna!

Probably not on her most popular songs, but this video surely is one her most stunning ones. The imagery and the whole atmosphere, plus with the music make it hypnotic.

This track is an example of how Madonna has always been at the tip of the iceberg for dance music. bedtime stories is a high quality album, very eclectic, it has ballads, R&B hip hop, dance music. I think Madonna's most creative time was the nineties.

This is such an underrated gem. I wish more people knew about it. The music video alone is worth a listen or watch. Feels like your in a dream or nightmare depending on your mindset. Love it!

One of the most breathtaking pop music videos ever made. Why has this video not been remastered in 4K along with Madonna's entire beautiful catalogue? Why is Madonna's management team so useless?
It's not her team, but you may know that Madonna has had huge issues with Warner - the director hated her guts, so they just did nothing - or the bare minimum, to keep the work on her catalogue. There were lots of album anniversary projects ready to be launched, that didn't see the light because of that.
Now that that boss has left, perhaps we can hope for some interesting re-releases in the future.

The meaning behind this song (humans being suppressed, enlightenment, giving birth to peace, the crone's hat, etc) most people don't even know, the fact that Madonna agreed with Bjork in this message is amazing, and what a message it was, in such a beautiful production of harmony and sounds, not to mention the stunning visuals to reinforce the message. Probably the biggest under-rated song in history when it comes to production and lyrical content. I will never skip this song, or stop listening to it.

I will admit I have overlooked Madonna for many years, it's only now going through her back catalogue you can truly see how much her ideas have been ripped off by people today.

I didn't like this song at all when I was younger. However, now I absolutely love it. The production, the mood it invokes, the way it evolves, and how Madonna really used her voice in a unique way to bring this song to another level is really otherworldly.
