How To Program The Auto Door Lock Function on 2003-2009 4runners

- Not the most exciting video today, but I'm still an idiot so that's entertaining. If you've been wondering how to program the auto door lock function on the 4th gen 4runner, it's actually really simple.
There are 2 different settings for this:
1. The doors lock and unlock when you shift in and out of park
2. The doors lock once you start driving (around 10mph)
To switch between these options, follow this procedure:
1. With all the doors closed, switch the ignition to the "ON" position
2. Vehicle must be in park or neutral
3. Within 10 seconds of switching the ignition, press and hold the driver's side unlock button for exactly 5 seconds
4. If you've done this correctly, the locks will cycle back and forth letting you know you've changed the setting
5. Carry on with your life

You saved me from a big headache. My mistake was exactly what you pointed out - depressing the unlock button longer than 5 seconds. And I just couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong until I saw your video.

Dude. Thx a ton. For the life of me I couldn't figure this out with the manual. This worked for my 2018 4runner.
OMG thank you! The trick is it HAS to be EXACTLY 5 seconds (like, within ± 500ms) or it doesn't work. I was following the manual and it doesn't say this. If you hold it for 4 or 6 seconds it won't work.

Close all doors and switch the ignition to the “ON” position. Do not start the engine.
Do one of the following depending on how you want the auto lock system to function:
To make the doors automatically lock when shifting, shift the gear to “P” (you’re probably on “P” already), then press and hold button “Lock” button on the door.
To make the doors automatically unlock when shifting, shift the gear to “P“, then press and hold the “Unlock” button on the door.
To make the doors automatically lock when the vehicle reaches 12mph, shift the gear to “N“, then press and hold the “Lock” button on the door.
To make the doors automatically unlock when the driver’s door is opened, shift the gear to “N“, then press and hold “Unlock” button on the door.
To disable any of the door lock settings, simply repeat the procedure.
This procedure Is not working on my 06 Highlander limited . Any advice please ?
Hey Daniel Dickey, I just picked up a 2008, I like that it will "lock all doors when shifting out of P, but HATE that it auto unlocks when shifted back to Park. Can we get it to lock but NOT UNLOCK?

So good! I have a 2007 Lexus GX470 and I had the same experience and this worked perfect. I only have one key so it’s important to me that it unlocks when I put the vehicle in park. Thank you for the tip!

My issue is having the doors auto lock when I’m out of the vehicle which is incredibly annoying when your going in and out while loading. I don’t have access to my vehicle at the moment but I can’t wait to give your instructions a try!

There is. Instead of using unlock in the sequence, hold down lock. Put mine in manual only mode. You're welcome.
Yeah that's right. You just use the same thing you used to engage a feature to disengage it. Full manual is easy sleezy lemon pezee

Man i love this. Doors all not unlocking when you turn off the car was about as annoying as it gets. Now, my other annoyance is the damn key fob. For some reason I inadvertently hit the buttons all the time. Never had the issue with any other brand of vehicle. Looking for a replacement fob!!!
Works on my '03 Sequoia. Apparently it has a 3rd setting for the door locks. It would lock when I shift out of park and just stay locked. Very annoying having to go back to the drivers door and hit the unlock button every time to open the rear hatch or any other door, even though I hadn't locked it myself. I did this process and it switched to locking when shifting out of park and unlocking when shifting back into park. I didn't continued toggling it to see what the other settings would do because it's late and that's what I wanted.

Thanks for this video! My 4Runner was set to only unlock front doors when I put it in park and it was driving and my wife crazy! Could you do a video on how to turn off the unlock/lock chime when you use your fob? Can’t seem to find a video on this for 4th gen. The chime is so annoying!

It should lock when you start the car immediately. That is the safest option. So people can’t jump in and assault you In the parking lot

Why would you want to be locked in a moving vehicle?
@@takenote7085 at red lights someone can open your car to steal something or just to jump in it, it's the kind of thing that never happens, but when you are victim of that you have regrets to not have activated that feature
Or just drunk roommate comes up to your car at the light and tries to open the door. A game he loved to play. But hey I guess it kept people aware.

The only 2 4runners I have that auto lock when you shift is my 2007 4runner sport and my 1997 limited none of my other 3rd gens do it my 2000 sr5 4x4 my 2000 limited 4x4 my 1999 limited 4x4 or my 2001 limited 4x4 it's very funny how that feature was put on limited 97 but it's rare to see in on any other limited 3rd gen there isn't many 4th gens with it other then limited and sport

Mine all lock when I put the key into the ON position, take out of ON position and they unlock. Had to break a window out due to turning the Runner on with the drivers door open then stepping outside the vehicle with it running. Not good, it’s driving me nuts.
Does anyone know how to disable the lock and unlock feature when using the keyhole on the tailgate to roll up the window? I don't want the truck to lock when I roll the window up.
I’ve locked my keys in my car 3 times already. I’ve only had the car for about 5 months, it’s starting to get old having to wait for AAA outside my car! Hopefully this helps!

Ok. Good video. And how to get back (stock) version? My Corolla 2006 programmed too, when selector moves to D point, all doors lock automatically.

Is actually after 4 seconds of switch being ON , then 5 seconds on the unlock switch. That’s how it worked for me after trying the ten second rule 😞

Kiss Kiss: 🤣 same here with the key fob. Also, only 5 fobs can be programmed at a time. If a fob is not “learning,” memory could be full and you’ll need to reset.

agree. Toyota (or the Japanese) is pathetic on this kind of accuracy.
I unlock my 4Runner using the key fob, set the keys down, and walk out to the car. Just as I arrive to open the door, the damn car auto locks all the doors!! What crazed engineer programs a car to Lock the doors shortly after you've Unlocked them???
Would LOVE to shut off this locking feature (or strangle the guy who created it . . . )
I think it does that if you haven't opened the door within 30 seconds so you don't accidentally hit the button and leave it unlocked
@@CanadianGearhead Yes, I'm guessing the Toyota engineers thought us owners too stupid to lock our own doors.
So, the engineers decided they should think for us and lock our doors, even if we had intentionally UNlocked the doors 30 seconds earlier.
The manual says:
"The timing of the [30 second] automatic door lock function can be changed. For details, contact your Toyota dealer." Our Toyota dealer has no idea what the manual is referring to. Any ideas?
