- Boss CE-1 Chorus Ensemble provides the endless warm, analog effect musicians covet, including our very own Andy Martin. Created in 1976 when Roland founded Boss and viewed as one of the progenitors of the chorus/vibrato effect, the CE-1 is a timeless original ideal for guitar, bass or keys. Watch Andy dial in classic chorus tone in today's edition of #AndysVintagePicks.

Love that smile after he says "but not this one, cause' it's mine". Really seems like a special piece of history, and gear. I just purchased one off reverb and can't wait to try it out. Thanks for all you do Andy, great demo as always!
Alex Lifeson used this tones so much on the Rush albuns between 77 and 82, that, anytime i hear someone playing this pedal, it sounds like him, to me.
Has a flanger characteristic to the sound. Beautifull sound.
Yep. Sounds a lot like an old electric mistress when it gets that slight feedback
Yeah, the basic delay before modulation is around 3ms when the chorus is on, so it occupies the flanger-esque part of the delay range. And it DOES give it a ton of richness.
Agree! Sounds great!
@@LeviBulger it was made around the same time as the mistress so i would assume they would’ve use similar parts
@@LeviBulger i was just saying that in a other comment section of another video, the electric mistress is the most perfect emulation of the ce-1
a mainstay for John Frusciante with RHCP.
I think that this same pedal was used on the recording of the rhythm guitars of Prince's Purple Rain song, back in 1983. The tone is so reminiscent of that song too.
Thank you Andy. It's always a pleasure to hear you playing vintage pedals.
Wait till that bearded fellow recording six guitars sees this.
He'll sell his beard to another hip producer just to buy one
Tune up and down six different ways AND use this - head explosion
Catface while using a 12 string
Exactly what I was thinking. haha
May I know the song name and the reference?
I do love mine. Bought it new back in about 76 and am currently going through it with an electronics wizard friend to replace some caps and whatnot. I don't anybody ever built a better sounding chorus.
Another Perfect Day, the most underrated Motörhead album, probably their best!! Nice one Andy!
stjhnn Thanks, I wanted to play a non-traditional chorus tune 🤘🏻
Still my favorite Motorhead tune. You better believe my ears perked up when the video started playing!
Thanks for listening Andy! Great Demo!
I had one of these as a teenager in the mid 90s! It was dirt cheap and weighed a ton, but the chorus was fantastic. I do remember that the bypass did something nasty to the signal though, the only way I can describe it was that it sounded like brittle plastic.
I bought one in July . Best sounding chorus I've ever played . Buy one before they go for thousands !!!
One day, I shall own you.
Andy
instant Exit... Stage Left era Alex Lifeson
Love Alex Lifeson = Monster Player.
Just wait until Dan from TPS sees this. Andy on TPS? Andy on TPS.
I've got a Retro-Sonic Chorus, which is a clone of the CE-1, and I have to say it is THE BEST chorus I've ever played. And the Vibrato side is far preferable to me for fast rotary sounds than any actual rotary pedal I've ever tried.
I got them both, but guess which one is on my board?
I'll have to give it a try. I have never heard a pedal that does what the ce1 does. It's got a very unique oscillating shimmer that sounds sorta like the feedback you get from a mistress. The closest I've heard is probably the boss ce2 and an old ibanez Flange
Yeah, it can cover both chorus and Electric Mistress type flanging pretty well. I mean, it obviously doesn't cover the Mistress perfectly, but if I had to choose one pedal to do both, it'd be the Retro-Sonic.
It also has a preamp which allows you to boost your amp up like John frusciantes's
"But first, here's my clean tone."
I've always been curious how this one sounds up against the chorus in the RE501 space echo. I loved that chorus!
Thought I recognised that first riff! When someone else mentioned Motorhead I went and listened to Another Perfect Day and there it was! Brian Robertson is a very underrated guitarist. Nice tone too.
Where can I get one of those invisible picks??
Jonny Marr in a box! Love it.
Would've been easier to record and retune that intro 6 times
The best pedal ever.
3:25 Sounds a little like Cocteau Twins..
You the best of the best, man! Great imression, style! You playing made every pedal megadrive!🤘
'You can find these right here on Reverb...but not this one...
BECAUSE IT'S MINE.'
Feel the full wrath of Andy Martin.
Andy is the absolute best pal on Earth. Just don't mess with his gear. Or feed him after midnight.
A little Heart & Soul @ 4:46
Haha yeah, along with the telltale Andy smirk when he sneaks it in
greeniz2k7 😏
Yeah noticed that myself, cheeky grin to camera! Only us old guys know that tune ha ha
Past fx do an awesome clone of this. And it has some switchable mods and runs off 9v. Smaller too.
Boss pedals are fantastic
some
*was
I have one!
with my CP70 Electric Grand Piano is THE PERFECT match!
never been a chorus guy. but this is pretty amazing
I Got Mine!
Lucky you
Hey Andy, i think its really cool that your playing a Brian Robertson Motorhead Tune !
Love these series. Infact i love everything on reverb
Um amigo daqui do Brasil já o possui há muitos anos, e posso dizer:
É uma máquina insuperável de sons🎼🎵🎼🎸🎼🎵
Sensacional.
I love this pedal.
Nice one Andy, that's my favorite riff from Motorhead I Got Mine with Robbo Robertson on guitar. Nice review also.
This thing is a tone sucker as I recall.
Watching this ce1 review thru a chorused amp (guess which one) it's pretty chorusy
Roland JC-120
Dan's favourite :)
please make more videos like this.
Well Dad still got his original one from
Yesteryears and still uses it everyday in the studio....hook it up with two little fender tube combos(I use princetons or deluxes) and you will sound triple scale....
I Got Mine!! 🤟
4:46 'Heart & Soul' by Huey Lewis & the News!!!
Yes to i got mine awesome riffage \m/
Awesome! Motörhead! Brian Robertson!
Would love to see a comparison with the vintage Clone Theory.
This really is a great pedal.
THE chorus
John Frusciante!?
Crank it for fuzz! They don't make em like this anymore!
SONG ID FROM 5:30 PRETTY PLEASE!!!
Cool pedal and nice EVH playing.
What I hear is a Flanger layer that makes this get its sound.
I got the Mr Black and that is good enough for me (stereo too!)
are there any modern alternatives that offer both chorus and vibrato?
Leo Z Walrus Audio Julia is a clone of the CE-1
Nope
what pickup is in the neck of that redtail?
Robbie Blunt also used one when he was with Robert Plant.
Sounds nice. Keep it up!!
This is pure Frusciante sounds
Hey Andy, that Malekko Spring you got there, it really distracts me...... would you mind take it out and make a demo of it vs the spring chicken?? :)
Starting a video with motorhead!!! Amazing
Reminds me of early Billy Duffy from the Cult.
Same here! But makes sense: he was an avid user of the Roland JC-120, which has the same chorus circuit.
I have one, do you want it or can you sell it for me?
First song?
Any good cheap clones of this? Costs more then some of my guitars
None Cheap but Get an Analogman Bi-Chorus or Mini Chorus with Deep Switch. "Trust Me" or even perhaps a Tortuga Martini Chorus. I got the Free the Tone Tri Avatar. ( couldn't be happier ). For that classic: 80's Rack-Chorus/ Tri-Chorus . . . - you need The Shiva LIL Wave from Italy. I find this pedal Too Wobbly ( my apologies to: Alex Lifeson and Daniel Steinhardt ) big fan of both of you.
Check out my Triungulo Lab Chorus Ensemble
Boss has an updated CE1 with stereo capabilities. However I have no idea how it compares to the original
For a really cheap and good chorus, check out the Movall Chorus. They're like 50 bucks and every one of their pedals I've heard has been just as good as or better than a lot of Mooers. I absolutely love their vox pedal, the Ice Yeti. It nails the ac30 sound especially in the high end, which I've never been able to do with other vox in a box pedals
What’s that orange amp? Overdrive??
DividedByTime That's written on it yeah. I assume you're watching on a small screen?
I saw the word overdrive, so I meant what is an Orange Overdrive amp? Never heard of it
Motorhead I got mine!😎😊
Hello!
That pedal show already did it, just when up $200
Look at that sweet AR 300.
Its an Artist 2619 tri-tone 1978 😎
That sounds good as fuck, Andy.
Sounds awesome but I'm not spending $500 on a pedal. I grabbed the UAD VST clone of this pedal on sale for $49 (you will also need an Apollo or Satellite.) I compared it to 7 or 8 other chorus plugins and despite its simplicity and few knobs the sound just kills every other chorus plugin I compared it to.
lol mine turned up cheap locally. ~200-something USD. still a lot, but not 500-800+ a lot
Has anyone ever told you that you a little like Roger Hodgson from Supertramp?
Blessthank
TC electronic have a ‘tone print’ of Dan from that pedal show’s CE-1 for their Corona pedal. Way less wallet destroying...
Also way less fun.
And not analog either, as I recall
The reason people like the ce1 is because of the natural feedback it gets from the bbd. You just can't get that from a digital pedal no matter what. The closest I've found is a ce2 and older mistress style Flangers set to chorus settings
but absolutely nothing comparing to this
Yeah, FUCKIN' correct.
A friend has one he doesn't use. I am saving up to offer him $750.
The chorus ce-5 is the best for John
Motorhead baby!!!
I had this pedal when it came out. It sounded amazing, but it sucked the tone right out of your amp. I ran in through a Mesa Boogie IIb and it was great, just a tone sucker.
Do you realy need a chorus? Yes, only to play Black Hole Sun!!!
Or any number of leslie pedals and sound much more like it
Yeah, "Black Hole Sun" was _always_ a Leslie. From Wikipedia: "Cornell came up with the song while using a Leslie speaker. Guitarist Kim Thayil said that the Leslie speaker was perfect for the song as "it's very Beatlesque and has a distinctive sound. It ended up changing the song completely."[5] "
PURPLE RAIN
or Come As You Are
EH small clone
motorhead respek!!
jonh frusciante
Motorhead, fuck Yea.
Motorhead!
FKK YeA Andy! RockKIIN MotorHead!!
Motorhead!!!
the md500 does a great job copying this.
Comes with a power switch because it CHEWS thru batteries
so flange-y
The worst tone sucking pedal ever made, like draping a blanket over your amp..because it was never designed for guitars..it was for keyboards.
AMSRMX16 was good enough for John Frusciante throughout every gig he did with the Chilis! And his tone was something other worldly, especially in the last few years 😀
AMSRMX16 yeah just awful. I still own one I bought new but I’d never play it live these days, only in studio where I can unplug it when not needed...
Just put a buffered pedal before the CE-1. That buffer brings back all of the high frequencies; the "blanket" is lifted off of your amp.
It sounds good. But do to it's reputation for being a Tonesucker, I think they are severely overpriced and overrated.
This is one of the most overrated pedals there is imo.
I owned one for years, finally sold it.
All Boss chorus pedals sounds fairly similar, you’ll notice this if you put them side by side.
The CE-300 never gets mentioned, because it’s a rack unit is my guess, but it has more control and again sounds like typical Boss chorus.
Anyway, the CE-1 looks cool, sounds cool, is cool, but don’t feel bad about not owning one, chorus is cheesy on guitar anyway, haha.
Great demo by Andy as always.
Motorhead!
