"Death on Two Legs" - Freddie Mercury in 1975. I urge any young artist to listen to this song & learn about the legacy behind it. The MOST important part of any major label contract is the "death clause". DO NOT just skip over that. It means if you die, the company takes total control of your musical assets, or worse. Don't sign ANYTHING which could at any point make you worth more DEAD than ALIVE. Lots of the musical "tragedies" we've seen over the years were NOT "accidents."
Cases like Slipknot and Limp Bizkit are the high profile ones that people hear about, there are countless examples of smaller bands being completely ruined by labels. How many times have you heard of musicians holding full time jobs until their 2nd or even 3rd album that makes it big?

There are too many ways for bands to record, distribute, and tour, on their own, without Label Executives, for the Labels to keep pulling the same old crap.
Perfect example of this is the movie Rock of Ages where the manager promises the venue all the money earned then charges them for exactly what they earned that night
Yep, this is a story I've been hearing for a verrry long time. Cream literally imploded due to being completely defrauded by their 'management'. Prince called this out years ago, refusing to take Advances and recording and producing his own work. Kurt Cobain's David Geffen joke at the 'MTV Unplugged' performance was a jipe at this. Trent Reznor literally told people to steal his albums. Imagine getting a 'regular' job, earning a Gross of, say, 40K a year, then the company you work for pays you 5% of that. You'd be WELL pissed! This is what killed my interest in being a 'professional' musician at about age 16 or so. No wonder so many end up suicidal, as addicts, or bitter beyond recognition.
