Wouldn't call a horribly balanced game a, "masterpiece". They had an opportunity with the remake to fix the horrendous gym leader/E4 level curve, and they didn't.
I think that issue was mainly caused because they want remakes to be exactly like the original. The same thing happened with FRLG and I mainly say that flaw is because of how they designed remakes at the time. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think this was also in ORAS but at least they changed the levels of the Kanto gym leaders. I consider HGSS the best games even though they do have little issues, I wish they kept in all new evolutions and didn’t lock any to post game but I agree they should’ve added new Pokémon to the gyms and E4.

I remember when this game first came out. I was in college and it was so nice to see a lot of students over there were holding the pokewalkers. Mine I attached to my old schooled phone as a phone charm. Those were so fun. Man..Where did time go? Super nostalgia here. One of my favorite games of the series. I played the original back in 2000 when I was 11 years old. :)
Mine survived falling in a toilet twice. It met its fate when an autistic kid ripped it off me and spiked it on pavement :(. Although I probably could repair it now I don't want to risk permanently damaging it
At the time that was supposed to be the greatest moment you can experience in a pokemon game ever made, and like he said they were planning on ending the series after HG and SS, I mean holding arceus (the holy God pokemon) and choosing which God pokemon you want they tried to make it as dramatic as possible with the cutscenes, at the the time I thought it was the greatest moment ever, and now replaying it recently i see the odd feel to it
I was ready to give up on Pokemon and "grow up" but then these games came out and I just had to get them. then I realized that I don't need to give up something I love to grow up. Pokemon kicks ass, I'm 21 but even when I'm 40 I'm still gonna be playing. don't ever compromise who you are or what you love for anything. always do you.
I'm 32 and I still play Pokemon. You are absolutely right, growing up doesn't mean "stop doing kids' stuff" (playing with toys or video games), it means taking responsibility for yourself and learning how to be a better person.
Mega evolution and z moves are the worst things game freak introduced and they ruin the games for me. It won't be something they will get rid of going forward unfortunately :/
the remakes are only nostalgic because of the gen 4 style of the little characters. modern remakes will look like sword and shield style and will ruin the nostalga and amount of content because "it looks nice so kids will buy it" aproach.
Hey!!! I'm playing SoulSilver right now!!! One of the best Pokemon adventures I've played!!! Feels a bit like revisting home, since FireRed was my first Pokemon game...
The game saves a copy of every pokemon sent to the pokewalker. If are unable to return the pokemon properly due to any reason, you can just reset the pokewalker information by pressing up, select and R in the pokewalker menu of the heartgold/soulsilver game. This also gives you back the pokemon
Glad I got Soul Silver, these games are extremely bloody rare. Here in the U.K., I found a Heart Gold copy for over £60 and that's without the poke walker.
It's disappointing that you guys would choose to advertise Full Sail University in one of your videos. To me, DidYouKnow has a very solid and credible reputation as a quality content producer, but advertising for Full Sail diminishes that. Full Sail is a for-profit University, many of which have been known to scam students, provide lackluster education, and charge overwhelming tuition and interest rates. Full Sail participates in this as well. Advertising them is only increasing their presence, when in fact we should be speaking out against them, as for-profit schools only aim is to make as much money as they can from uninformed college students without regard for consequences or what happens to the students.
I'm a student at Full Sail, so I have some insight to this. Full Sail accepts most students with little regard to their High School GPA. Because of this, there are plenty of students that start their degree at Full Sail, then drop out, already having lost a lot of money. That's definitely an issue and one we should be working on. However, you're misrepresenting the positives of Full Sail. For people who go and complete the work, create projects that will get them noticed by the industry they want to enter, and network with other students, faculty members, and professionals, it's one of the best places you can find. The classes aren't what I would call "lackluster." In fact, they're pretty damn intensive since students only take a particular class for four weeks. The negatives of Full Sail are there and you're mostly accurate, but it's pretty clear to see that it's not a scam and that students that put in the effort have plenty of opportunity to get into their desired career.
Tech Crew Guy Full Sail is terrible; it's a 'university' that's only partly recognized and charges hilarious fees. Also, it's an online university, which just always is a red flag. I'm saying this as a guy that's not anywhere near from the US.

They made limited copies, I believe it's because adding the Pokewalker with each one was too expensive or something so they didn't make nearly as much as other games.

Something similar happened to me with Emerald (except that I didn't lose it, rather got it stolen from me) and was the most expensive game I have ever purchased. Thankfully it was in near mint condition.
The leftover pokewalkers were repurposed, recoloured white and green and packaged with Wii Fit U. You use the IR to communicate with the gamepad and send your calories burned to the console, and your new (if any) calorie goal to the pokewalker. It chimes when you've hit certain time goals of continuous movement, and plays a fanfare when you reach your calorie goal for the day. The pokewalker lives on! It's a great little device.
My favorite feature in HGSS was the first Pokemon in your party "following" you outside its Pokeball. For the life of me I don't know why its taken them so long to bring back this feature in a MAIN series title (Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee don't count.)
sprites are more complicated in the more modern games, rending 3d models and the such.Gen 5 i feel was the last gen to do that feature reasonably. These days, its 809+ models with walking animations they'd have to make and cram in with everything else in the game. Would like to have a Lunala follow me around in a game though, not gonna lie.
i hated that feature in lets go. it made the games feel like spin offs and not the core series. pokemon core should be like Black And White 2. NOT heartgold.

Pokemon HG/SS always had issues, whats worse, if you saved while the visual glitches were already at work, you lost your save file forever.
HeartGold was my first Pokémon game. I was twelve. I don't think I've ever played through a game as many times as I have with this game. It never gets old.
So one day i lost my Pokewalker and i found it 2 years later but it wouldn't turn on...... Long story short to this day Bonsley is forever trapped inside my Pokewalker.

Soulsilver was my first series game, and I got the Pokewalker Bundle, still got the original file and walker! (EDIT) I keep it in one of those cartridge protector things, you know, those little plastic squares that hold up to 3 games?

Generation IV is objectively the best. It introduced Wifi communication and bolstered the Pokemon competitive scene. Sure it did not have the same impact as gen I and II in popular culture, but as a set of games, it is still the best mainly due to HGSS. HGSS have everything you can want from a Pokemon game at that time: Pokemon following you, Battle frontier, and Two region to explore. It improves from its predecessor, GSC so much, and this is already considering how good GSC was. The only thing I can think of what GEN II has over HGSS, is the fact that Gold and Silver is compatible to the original gameboy, a trait that is extremely rare nowadays. Gen IV without HGSS isn't as good as the other generations if we think about it so that should give you an idea just how good HGSS is. Heart Gold and Soul Silver are Gamfreaks's masterpiece.
1.2nd gen (16 gyms and most epic last battle) 2. 3rd gen (bold graphics update that defined the outlook of 1-3 gen mons) 3. 4th gen because of slow pace especially in battles. Otherwise it would go 2nd

Acetalos - Bad level scaling, stingy xp, chikorita still being simply bad, still not being able to just fly between Kanto and Johto for no reason, roaming legendaries and lot of the Johto pokemons still aren't very good or you can only get those way too late into the game.

The PokeWalker is one of the best gimmicks to come out of a Pokemon game. It's so cool taking a Pokemon with me on a walk, espcially a Legendary Pokemon. Shame the battery in mine died, but I can replace it. I think.
Yes, you can replace it. You just need a really tiny screw driver and the same kind of battery. You can find those batteries pretty easily, and the screw driver should'nd be too hard to find either.
Heart gold and Soul Silver are definitely my all time favorite Pokémon games. I remember how happy I was when I finally convinced my parents to let me import Soul Silver before the games came out in the states.
I remember saving up money to buy soul silver when I was 9 on launch day! It’s easily one of the biggest games of my childhood and will always hold a special place in my love for video games.
Generation 2 will always be the best generation to me. I still remember the first time I discovered that Kanto was in the game and that I could fight the previous gym leaders from Pokémon Yellow! I love this franchise so much and Pokémon Gold/Heart Gold will always have a special place in my heart.
I absolutely LOVED Pokemon SoulSilver. It had so many cool features that I really think could have been implemented into newer games. Just think, in ORAS you could have a Torchic follow you! How cool would that be? I still play SS for memories and because it's my third favorite Pokemon game of all time.
Developers do expect the anti-piracy to be eventually worked around, but that’s not the point of making them. Most games are sold the most in the first week or so of its release. Anti-piracy measures aren’t meant to last so much as they are meant to stall for time and keep pirates busy until the initial sales are over. Nobody would buy your game if pirates could sell it for cheap- or free- the moment it came out.

You guys missed a bit of trivia which I expected to appear: On release date, the Netherlands and Belgium (the Flemish side of Belgium at least) had faulty cartridges being distributed, causing them to give a save file related error despite the absence of it, rendering the game playable. It could've been a faulty version of the game they tried to get rid of, but instead got in hands with the distributor of both the Netherlands and Belgium, causing those English defect copies to get into stores. Nintendo even published a press release, stating the release in the Netherlands and the Dutch/Flemish part of Belgium has been delayed. One thing though: Most people refer the faulty games as Dutch translations, but that's simply incorrect as the Netherlands nor Belgium got any Dutch Pokémon games. No Pokémon mainline title has ever been translated to Dutch, despite of the Dutch dub of the anime series (this has to do with that most children shows in the Netherlands (Belgium too I think) are translated to Dutch instead of kept in English.)).

Sad too see how times have changed... 2009: you get a game filled with features and a pretty accurate pokeball pedometer packed in for 40€ 2018 : you get a game with missing features for 60€ and a pokeball with a stick, separately, for 10€ higher than the older games used to cost.

At the end of the day it's just a big let down if you consider what gamefreak used to make and what the switch is capable of.
The only thing that I wish could have been better in HG/SS was when after you defeat the pokemon League for the first time and go to kanto that the wild pokemon were upped to your level and increased per area instead of being what they were in the original. I feel they should have been 40-50s and Mt. Silver should have been 50-60s instead of finding level 2-20 max. All the trainers were at your level but, not wild pokemon. Besides that the games were amazing!
@@metalmario1231 Most Pokémon require a specific level to evolve. Though, if they are past that level they won't evolve until levelling up a little later (not sure how it's decided when a Pokémon will attempt to evolve again). So you could theoretically get a level 65 Pokémon that has 2 evolutions that evolves the first time at, like, 80 and then reaches 100 without evolving again. Though this issue doesn't really matter as long as the Pokémon can be bred.
Re-Exo Um, no they don't require a specific level. If you caught a unevolved pokemon whose level was past their evolition level, the next time you level it up, it will evolve again. It would only become impossible to evolve them if they remains unevolved when they reach level 100.
I wish this game was more accessible because your going to have to pay a arm and a leg if you want to get this game now. I guess it just goes to show how popular this game is
It actually isn't a remake, it takes place a few years after Pokemon Crystal, which is why Tin Tower has an extra floor and was renamed to Bell Tower (if you want to count the comics as canon then Tin Tower actually collapsed and was rebuilt as Bell Tower)

@jason savchuk gen 4 has heartgold which is probably "gen 2" in your mind. sinnoh alone was amazing. combine that with kanto and johto and you have perfection. a region on its own unova is probably the best but thats not how gens work.
SoulSilver was my first full Pokemon experience. So many good memories. I used to sneak my Pokewalker to elementary school to battle with my friends at recess. Later my family and I took a road trip to Houston and when we were eating in a restaurant someone broke into our car and stole a bunch of bags including the one my white DSi was in. Never got around to buying it again and have missed it since. Maybe nostalgia is making me biased but no other Pokemon has replaced the experience of playing this game yet.
Of all the remakes, this hit me home the hardest. The nostalgia factor is strong and the amount of fun features added to it made me consider this to be the best Pokémon game ever. I never cried so much out of nostalgia on a video game as much as this one.
I played Crystal when I was like 8 and all I can say is good riddance. Fuck those slots. And the card flip game as well. You're just aimlessly throwing your money away hoping you'll get something in return. That's not to say Voltorb Flip can't be luck based at times, but I don't know why people defend rigged slots over a game that actually requires skill. And yes, my 8 year old self is still salty because he didn't get a Porygon

Hey as someone who works with unity quite a bit, finding source code/assets from older projects is super common; especially with small teams. Rather than start from scratch most dev teams just start with all of the old files and work from there. I imagine gamefreak wanted to clean out this stuff, but some software engineer forgot it was there.
These games came out when I was 9 or 10. Silver was my first Pokemon game, it was given to me by a family friend's son who always kinda watched over me and got me into gaming. I never actually beat it before the battery died, but when the remakes released I naturally grabbed SoulSilver. While they aren't my favorite games (Either Platinum or Black/White 2 would be), they are definitely a close second.
Whats really cool to me is that Pokemon black and white share a lot of music instruments from pokemon heart gold soul silver, you can hear the bass and trumpet like instruments, they sound exactly the same
Heartgold and Soulsilver & Black and White 2 are the best Pokemon games ever made in my honest opinion. But all others like the original Gold, Silver and Crystal, Black and White 1, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Firered and Leafgreen & Sun and Moon & maybe Platinum are good as well.
Game Freak gets lazier everyday. I can't understant how each game after HGSS is worse in comparison. They do have a standard of how to make a good, complete game with HGSS so with aren't they following it is beyond me. Also I wish they just dropped this third version shit, is greedy and unnecessary in this day and age.

It's disappointing that you guys would choose to advertise Full Sail University in one of your videos. To me, DidYouKnow has a very solid and credible reputation as a quality content producer, but advertising for Full Sail diminishes that. Full Sail is a for-profit University, many of which have been known to scam students, provide lackluster education, and charge overwhelming tuition and interest rates. Full Sail participates in this as well. Advertising them is only increasing their presence, when in fact we should be speaking out against them, as for-profit schools only aim is to make as much money as they can from uninformed college students without regard for consequences or what happens to the students.
As a previous student, I full heartedly agree.
I'm a student at Full Sail, so I have some insight to this. Full Sail accepts most students with little regard to their High School GPA. Because of this, there are plenty of students that start their degree at Full Sail, then drop out, already having lost a lot of money. That's definitely an issue and one we should be working on. However, you're misrepresenting the positives of Full Sail. For people who go and complete the work, create projects that will get them noticed by the industry they want to enter, and network with other students, faculty members, and professionals, it's one of the best places you can find. The classes aren't what I would call "lackluster." In fact, they're pretty damn intensive since students only take a particular class for four weeks.
The negatives of Full Sail are there and you're mostly accurate, but it's pretty clear to see that it's not a scam and that students that put in the effort have plenty of opportunity to get into their desired career.
Tech Crew Guy Full Sail is terrible; it's a 'university' that's only partly recognized and charges hilarious fees. Also, it's an online university, which just always is a red flag.
I'm saying this as a guy that's not anywhere near from the US.

I got soulsilver from a friend of mine when I lost Heartgold.
Nope, still have both versions, tho I lost one of the pokewalkers.
I managed to find a copy in perfect condition at a Gamestop....at 6:00 PM... on Black Friday. $40 for it, it was an instant buy for me.
Something similar happened to me with Emerald (except that I didn't lose it, rather got it stolen from me) and was the most expensive game I have ever purchased.

The leftover pokewalkers were repurposed, recoloured white and green and packaged with Wii Fit U. You use the IR to communicate with the gamepad and send your calories burned to the console, and your new (if any) calorie goal to the pokewalker. It chimes when you've hit certain time goals of continuous movement, and plays a fanfare when you reach your calorie goal for the day. The pokewalker lives on! It's a great little device.
I am in no way surprised that the Ho-Oh battle theme was tough to make, the effort shines through. Gorgeous theme.
My favorite feature in HGSS was the first Pokemon in your party "following" you outside its Pokeball. For the life of me I don't know why its taken them so long to bring back this feature in a MAIN series title (Lets Go Pikachu and Eevee don't count.)
time constraints to add the feature, animate the sprites for newer mons, fix errors etc.
sprites are more complicated in the more modern games, rending 3d models and the such.Gen 5 i feel was the last gen to do that feature reasonably. These days, its 809+ models with walking animations they'd have to make and cram in with everything else in the game. Would like to have a Lunala follow me around in a game though, not gonna lie.

This remake was my first pokemon game, and I remember going to run with friends to make steps on the pokewalker
Generation IV is objectively the best. It introduced Wifi communication and bolstered the Pokemon competitive scene. Sure it did not have the same impact as gen I and II in popular culture, but as a set of games, it is still the best mainly due to HGSS. HGSS have everything you can want from a Pokemon game at that time: Pokemon following you, Battle frontier, and Two region to explore. It improves from its predecessor, GSC so much, and this is already considering how good GSC was. The only thing I can think of what GEN II has over HGSS, is the fact that Gold and Silver is compatible to the original gameboy, a trait that is extremely rare nowadays. Gen IV without HGSS isn't as good as the other generations if we think about it so that should give you an idea just how good HGSS is. Heart Gold and Soul Silver are Gamfreaks's masterpiece.

Acetalos - Bad level scaling, stingy xp, chikorita still being simply bad, still not being able to just fly between Kanto and Johto for no reason, roaming legendaries and lot of the Johto pokemons still aren't very good or you can only get those way too late into the game.

The PokeWalker is one of the best gimmicks to come out of a Pokemon game. It's so cool taking a Pokemon with me on a walk, espcially a Legendary Pokemon. Shame the battery in mine died, but I can replace it. I think.
Yes, you can replace it. You just need a really tiny screw driver and the same kind of battery. You can find those batteries pretty easily, and the screw driver should'nd be too hard to find either.

I remember saving up money to buy soul silver when I was 9 on launch day! It’s easily one of the biggest games of my childhood and will always hold a special place in my love for video games.
Generation 2 will always be the best generation to me. I still remember the first time I discovered that Kanto was in the game and that I could fight the previous gym leaders from Pokémon Yellow! I love this franchise so much and Pokémon Gold/Heart Gold will always have a special place in my heart.

I absolutely LOVED Pokemon SoulSilver. It had so many cool features that I really think could have been implemented into newer games. Just think, in ORAS you could have a Torchic follow you! How cool would that be? I still play SS for memories and because it's my third favorite Pokemon game of all time.
Anti-Piracy measures never work out, people always figure a way around them.
Developers do expect the anti-piracy to be eventually worked around, but that’s not the point of making them. Most games are sold the most in the first week or so of its release. Anti-piracy measures aren’t meant to last so much as they are meant to stall for time and keep pirates busy until the initial sales are over. Nobody would buy your game if pirates could sell it for cheap- or free- the moment it came out.

You guys missed a bit of trivia which I expected to appear:
On release date, the Netherlands and Belgium (the Flemish side of Belgium at least) had faulty cartridges being distributed, causing them to give a save file related error despite the absence of it, rendering the game playable. It could've been a faulty version of the game they tried to get rid of, but instead got in hands with the distributor of both the Netherlands and Belgium, causing those English defect copies to get into stores. Nintendo even published a press release, stating the release in the Netherlands and the Dutch/Flemish part of Belgium has been delayed.
One thing though: Most people refer the faulty games as Dutch translations, but that's simply incorrect as the Netherlands nor Belgium got any Dutch Pokémon games. No Pokémon mainline title has ever been translated to Dutch, despite of the Dutch dub of the anime series (this has to do with that most children shows in the Netherlands (Belgium too I think) are translated to Dutch instead of kept in English.)).
You'd think that sort of problem would make the game unplayable. Why'd they get recalled if they were playable?

2018 : you get a game with missing features for 60€ and a pokeball with a stick, separately, for 10€ higher than the older games used to cost.
It's a spinoff, OF COURSE there won't be every damn feature. It's to welcome GO players into the actual franchise.

@@RJ-mi3ck well, to his defense, gamefreak themselves don't know what these games truly are, so how should we know? One moment they say it's mainline, the other they say it's a spin off.
At the end of the day it's just a big let down if you consider what gamefreak used to make and what the switch is capable of.
The only thing that I wish could have been better in HG/SS was when after you defeat the pokemon League for the first time and go to kanto that the wild pokemon were upped to your level and increased per area instead of being what they were in the original. I feel they should have been 40-50s and Mt. Silver should have been 50-60s instead of finding level 2-20 max. All the trainers were at your level but, not wild pokemon. Besides that the games were amazing!

@@metalmario1231 Most Pokémon require a specific level to evolve. Though, if they are past that level they won't evolve until levelling up a little later (not sure how it's decided when a Pokémon will attempt to evolve again). So you could theoretically get a level 65 Pokémon that has 2 evolutions that evolves the first time at, like, 80 and then reaches 100 without evolving again. Though this issue doesn't really matter as long as the Pokémon can be bred.
Re-Exo Um, no they don't require a specific level. If you caught a unevolved pokemon whose level was past their evolition level, the next time you level it up, it will evolve again. It would only become impossible to evolve them if they remains unevolved when they reach level 100.
Soul silver was my favorite Pokémon game. It has a special place in my heart after the endless childhood nights and no home work getting done days.
Since I got it at 12 years old, Soulsilver has been my all-time favorite video-game. I will never tire of it.
I still remember trying to fake walking with my friends to cheat the Pokewalker but that thing just wouldn't get fooled.

Soul silver and heart gold is in my personal opinion the best remake, and best pokemon game to date. No other game reaches that level of goodness.
It actually isn't a remake, it takes place a few years after Pokemon Crystal, which is why Tin Tower has an extra floor and was renamed to Bell Tower (if you want to count the comics as canon then Tin Tower actually collapsed and was rebuilt as Bell Tower)

SoulSilver was my first full Pokemon experience. So many good memories. I used to sneak my Pokewalker to elementary school to battle with my friends at recess. Later my family and I took a road trip to Houston and when we were eating in a restaurant someone broke into our car and stole a bunch of bags including the one my white DSi was in. Never got around to buying it again and have missed it since. Maybe nostalgia is making me biased but no other Pokemon has replaced the experience of playing this game yet.
Of all the remakes, this hit me home the hardest. The nostalgia factor is strong and the amount of fun features added to it made me consider this to be the best Pokémon game ever. I never cried so much out of nostalgia on a video game as much as this one.

Hey as someone who works with unity quite a bit, finding source code/assets from older projects is super common; especially with small teams. Rather than start from scratch most dev teams just start with all of the old files and work from there. I imagine gamefreak wanted to clean out this stuff, but some software engineer forgot it was there.
These games came out when I was 9 or 10. Silver was my first Pokemon game, it was given to me by a family friend's son who always kinda watched over me and got me into gaming. I never actually beat it before the battery died, but when the remakes released I naturally grabbed SoulSilver. While they aren't my favorite games (Either Platinum or Black/White 2 would be), they are definitely a close second.
Whats really cool to me is that Pokemon black and white share a lot of music instruments from pokemon heart gold soul silver, you can hear the bass and trumpet like instruments, they sound exactly the same

I disagree, Platinum, Emerald and BW are my top 3, but everyone has their own views and opinions.

Heartgold and Soulsilver & Black and White 2 are the best Pokemon games ever made in my honest opinion. But all others like the original Gold, Silver and Crystal, Black and White 1, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Firered and Leafgreen & Sun and Moon & maybe Platinum are good as well.

I can't understant how each game after HGSS is worse in comparison. They do have a standard of how to make a good, complete game with HGSS so with aren't they following it is beyond me.
Also I wish they just dropped this third version shit, is greedy and unnecessary in this day and age.

@@jjc4924 not really. fans have always said B2/W2 was the peak of pokemon but in reality it was missing a lot of the charm of heartgold like walking with pokemon. it had poor sales aswell which demoralised game freak. i wish B2/W2 never happened.

Remakes of my favorite games in the series that somehow ended up improving on the original versions in virtually every way.
These games are amazing! One of my favorite games. I was lucky enough to never get rid of mine when I bought them as a kid. I didn’t know they’d be so rare now days. Great video!
